A new slant on the old familiar.......2000-08-25
I love reading guidebooks about Ireland. I was born there and lived there for 24 years before starting a long-term trans-atlantic commute. Reading what other people have to say about my home can be interesting. I rarely learn anything new and am often amazed at how someone else sees what, for me, was an everyday sight. This book is different. It's informative, easy to read, and well illustrated. It goes beyond the usual "Irish" pit stops and details some places that are definitely off the beaten track. One that really stands out is the Money Tree between Mountrath and Portlaoise. I must have passed it a hundred times and never noticed. If you only buy one book on Ireland, buy this one.
Beautiful book and very informative........1999-03-02
I took this book along on my recent trip to Ireland. I found so many wonderful sights that I usually would have missed. It was a little bulky for travel but I would never travel Ireland without it!!
Lots of information and great pictures.......1998-08-29
I lived in N.Ireland and would often use this as a guide. There is lots of history, useful information and pictures. Well layed out and thought out, great as a travel guide or fireside reading.

A Rare Gem!.......2001-08-18
A small, concise book that informs and entertains in addition to becoming a reference book for further reading. It covers the pinnacles of Greek history from prehistoric times to the fulfillment of the dream of hosting the Olympic Games in 2004. Highly recommended! - Gene Chronopoulos, President, Greek-Americans in the Arts and Entertainment
The Best!.......2001-08-16
Hands down, the best compact history of Greece out there!

The Sacred Hag of the Christian Celts.......2005-08-14
I first stumbled across a drawing of one of these unusual stone effigies in a book of horror stories called "The Angry Dead." To see the actual images in Dublin's National Museum, was still a bit of a shock as the anatomical detail proudly displayed by these Sheelas is normally only visible to a gynecologist or lover.
So I turned to this interesting and well-written book to learn more about the Sheela-Na-Gigs. Oddly enough, they are not fertility figures. Most of them are portrayed as ferocious and gaunt, with the ribs clearly delineated. Here is one of the earliest references to a Sheela found at Barnahealy, County Cork: "This is one of those old Fetish figures often found in Ireland on the fronts of churches as well as castles, they are called 'Hags of the Castle' and when placed above the keystone of the door arch were supposed to possess a tutelary or protective power so that an enemy passing by would be disarmed of evil intent against the building on seeing it."
Typically in Gaelic oral traditions, a central character in many of the stories was a fearsome female figure, typically described as "an old woman with a bald head, cadaverous ribs, sagging abdomen, and small flat breasts." She is the crone, the third aspect of the Earth goddess which also includes a maiden and a woman in her sexual prime.
It is rather delightful to think that the Sheela-na-Gigs migrated from Celtic mythology into Christian iconography and could be found perched above many a monastery or church door where generations of monks filed under her, protected (although they may not have known it) from the evil eye by an exaggerated carving of female pudenda. It's a pity that more recent churchmen (especially since the Reformation and most especially since Victorian times) were more prudish than their early counterparts and destroyed or hid many of these Sheelas.
This book contains drawings of all known Sheela-na-Gigs of Ireland and Britain, and also figures that might be related to them. The authors also list a website where further research on Sheela-Na-Gigs is being published: jharding.demon.co.uk.
You might want to plan your next trip to Britain or Ireland to include viewings of these fascinating, archaic Divine Hags.
Why aren't more people buying this book?.......2001-09-22
I have had a fascination with Sheela Na Gigs for a long time, but to be honest my knowledge on her was scant. I have worked with her as a personal deity for about 8 years (when she first appeared to me), so I had some idea of how I viewed her, but this book has refreshed my connection with Sheela to a profound level.
This book puts fowards some very interesting ideas as to the origins of the Sheelas & her name, and her possible basis in the hag aspect, which is the type of energy that I myself have found her to have. I have also gleaned some new ideas as to possible symbolic interpretations of her physical appearance, which has set me off on new avenuse of thinking.
The end of the book has a catalogue of Sheelas in England, Ireland, Wales & Scotland, and each entry has sketches of them. With this book in hand I have been to see two of them, one in Oxford & another in Fiddington. There is a Sheela about 20 minutes from my house and that will be my next visit!
This pictorial catalogue is extremely useful in that it allows you to see the particular Sheela refferred to in the main body of the text, thus enabling you to make up your own mind as to whether it supports the claims or not.
I must say it's a great shame I'm the first person to write a review of this book, I just wish there were as many people interested in Sheelas & their origins as Green Men, because to be honest Sheela is far more interesting!

Book Description
Embark on a pictorial journey through some of Ireland's most beautiful countrysides and cities. This lavish, photo-filled volume superbly captures the landscape, culture, people, and architecture of Ireland.
Book Description
Belleek pottery became world-famous in the 19th century, and with hundreds of beautifully produced color photographs, this extensive book covers every important aspect of the work of the pottery since its establishment in 1857.
Customer Reviews:
An exhaustive reference on a complicated subject..........2000-04-01
This book is the standard for Belleek. It is crammed full of fabulous photographs of this lovely parian china. It contains an extensive history of the pottery and those who developed this unique ware. It provides a thorough explanation of the process of manufacturing. It shows us the various marks, or backstamps and discusses their meanings. My only quibble with the book is the price guide, which is somewhat incomplete and which does not reflect the effect that online auctions have had on collecting. All in all, a wonderful book for the Belleek collector.
Book makes it evident author is an expert on his subject........1998-04-21
A must acquisition for collectors of this lovely Irish parian china. Covers history of the pottery, process of crafting and the names, marks and ware. Over 2,000 items pictured. A value guide of more than a 1,000 pieces, from various crafting periods, included as a bonus.
Very difficult to understand........1998-03-11
There are beautiful pictures of Belleek in this book, but to use it as a price guide is very difficult. For a piece, he only has one price for one mark, no other prices for other marks. For being an authority on Belleek, he could have made the price guide much easier to read.
Best Guide to Belleek Parian China.......1997-10-05
Probably the best guide to Belleek China currently available. Marion Langham's later book provides more illustrations but it is Degenhardt who has filled in much of the detail and provided a systematic approach to numbering and identifying Belleek. A must for any collector of this exquisite and increasingly difficult to find china.
Book Description
This authoritative book is a lavishly illustrated country-by-country directory of more than 170 of the world's aviation ships spanning a period of almost 100 years. The best book on the history of bassets .......2005-07-14
The emphasis of this book is a historical record of the best basset bloodlines in the US and offers wonderful photos of top bassets. An excellent reference tool for anyone who really wants to know what bassets are SUPPOSED to look like (not those pathetic examples in most calendars you buy at Borders)..proper structure and pay close attention to the AKC standard....If you own a basset...check your pedigrees...if you have a well bred dogs, there will be names in this book you'll recognize.
Pricey for the average person, but should be a reference tool for anyone serious about bassets.
Not a primer on care, but good research tool.......2004-06-07
I bought this book in preparation for the arrival of our Basset pup, and found that I could have used it more effectively during the research stage. This book offers an in-depth examination of the history of the Basset Hound, and gives great detail on American kennels that have excelled in producing show Bassets, tracking Bassets and field-trial Bassets. Be aware, however, that this book is expensive, and offers a minimum of information on Basset feeding, grooming, and other care issues. This book includes beautiful examples of excellent breed-standard dogs, and makes a fine research tool for any individual who wants to get serious about Basset breeding and/or showing.
Best Book Ever On Basset Hounds!.......2003-08-20
This book is full of useful information about Basset Hounds, not just dogs in general. Best breed book I have ever purchased!
All you ever wanted to know about the basset hound!.......2000-05-10
A wonderful book for breeders and pet owners alike. In-depth look at the breed as well as the standard for basset hounds. A must for anyone considering this breed.

Slightly antiquated Bonsai book.......2001-02-07
While the trees themselves have not changes, books have. This book is good, but there are better Bonsai books out there that are available for the beginner. Check out "The Complete Book of Bonsai" by Harry Tomlinson instead
Indoor Bonsai.......2000-06-13
This book was well-written, and very informative for the beginner. It went over all of the basics for Bonsai care, and was even appropriate as a reference book for the intermediate Bonsai caregiver. I would recommend it for anyone who is interested in starting a Bonsai garden

Book Description
This volume, which continues the textual discussions section of the author's Euripidea (E.J. Brill, 1994), discusses those passages in Euripides'Heraclidae, Hippolytus, Andromache, Hecuba, Supplices, Electra, Heracles, and Troades - the plays of the author's Loeb Euripides, volumes Two and Three - where text or translation was in need of explanation or justification. A large number of new conjectures are proposed and some forgotten conjectures argued for.
Book Description
As images of men's bodies have proliferated in pop culture and advertising during the past decade, many artists and photographers have taken up the male nude as a primary subject. Recent work has sparked controversy as well as praise for its shocking frankness, and the line between art and pornography has become increasingly difficult to define. New digital technologies have brought about new ways of representing the body, and we are now faced with a multiplicity of eroticisms, previously unexplored channels of desire, and more inclusive and varied body ideals.
Male Nudes Now offers an essential guide through this new territory with more than 240 fresh and provocative images. Featuring contemporary work, mostly unpublished, this important sourcebook showcases a dynamic mix of visionaries, from established masters to breakthrough newcomers.

A Definitive Collection of the Best Contemporary Work.......2006-01-04
"As old taboos have lifted in the past fifteen years, an increasing number of pioneering photographers and artists have taken up the male nude form as a primary subject. Though there have numerous monographs, there has been no comprehensive look at the new work in this field--until now. Male Nude Now presents for the first time a definitive collection of the best contemporary work on the male figure. No other book has approached the scope and heft of this volume, which boasts more than two hundred images from the most promising artists today. ¶ Culled from Galleries and museums around the world, the stellar contributor list includes new and established names including: Duane Michals, John Dugdale, Clive Barker, Chuck Close, Pierre et Gilles, Tom Bianchi, Francesco Scavullo, Jeff Burton, Greg Gorman, Christopher Makos and Reed Massengill. A powerfully erotic and intelligent package for admirers of the male physique--and aren`t we all?"--© zebraz
Good book.......2005-04-16
This is a great book for when (if you're a male) want to see some nude men.
This Book Is Addictive!.......2003-09-23
Mr. Leddick has outdone himself on this one. With over 100 artists represented, this is one of the most inclusive collections of male nudes I have seen. There are photographers, painters and sculptors represented. The only requirement seems to be that the artist be living. Several of those represented are well-known, Greg Gorman, George Dureau, Michael Leonard, Tom Bianchi, Christopher Makos, Arthur Tress, Nan Goldein, John Dugdale, Chuck Close, David Hockney and Don Barchardy, to name a few. But most of the artists are unknown-- at least to me. There is literally every kind of nude male you can imagine here and some you probably didn't. Mr. Leddick arranges the art in what seems a rather arbitrary grouping to me: experimentalists, neoclassicists, eroticists, fantasists, sensualists, realists and romanticists. He could just as easily have grouped the artists alphabetically, for my money.
There are a couple of dozen previously unknown artists I was crazy about. I particularly liked Steve Underhill, Jack Balas and Terry Gaskins. (There is a brief paragraph about each artist with a small photo included with each work of art; then there are addresses for the artists printed as well.)I would love to have seen all the people who got culled, or at least those who deserve honorable mention.
My only complaint about this beautiful book is that it is printed in a paperback edition only. You certainly want this one to last.
Sampling -- It's a Fleeting Bite of a lot of Photographers.......2002-12-03
I'm sure that the artist photographers are masters in their field. However, the sampling introduced in this book barely made my mouth water (with the odd exception), let alone drool.
If you're serious about photography, and less about the depiction of male beauty, this book is for you.
Buy two copies.......2002-06-26
Gay men might be well advised to buy two copies of this book because the first one's pages are likely to be stuck together in no time (you know what I mean). Page after page of gorgeous male bodies!!! Beautiful!!! Women ought to appreciate this too.

Book Description
A beautiful young nun with skin as smooth as silk and a face as lovely as a spring flower silently cooked and cleaned all day at Gan Ye Buddhist Temple. Every evening she joined the other nuns in chanting sutras.
Who would believe that this delicate young nun was destined to become Emperor of China - the only female emperor in more than 5,000 years of Chinese history.
Wu Ze Tian held power for almost half a century during the Tang Dynasty (618- 907 AD), a period of prospertiy and cultural achievement in China.
Customer Reviews:
A rare find.......2001-09-03
A children's book in English (bilingual, actually) on a the only Chinese female emperor in history. This book definitely breaks stereotypes of passive Asian females. Great book for young students, especially with the lavish pictures. But I would also love to see an adult version of this book.
Lovely book for children.......2000-05-30
This delightful book on the only woman who served as empress in her own right in China (the later, famous Empress Dowager ruled behind her son and nephews, only) is well written and nicely illustrated. It is, however, a children's book, which I was not expecting when I ordered it. I would say that it would make a delightful gift for a young person, but it is light on information for any interested scholar.
