A readable guide to Southwestern Native American ethnobotany.......1997-02-22
Written with much respect towards both the preservation and privacy of American Indian plant lore, this book provides an intelligent and entertaining ethnobotanic history of the Southwest. The line drawings clearly key with the plants in their habitats, and Bill Dunmire's color photographs place the plants in typical environments.
...and besides, I'm her son.

Moon Handbooks Texas.......2007-01-18
We found this very useful on our trip, finding great spots to visit that we may not have otherwise found.
Excellent guidebook.......2003-05-15
I used this book extensively during the three years I lived in Texas. I liked its mix of history and practical where, when, and how information.
Organized regionally around the major cities, the Texas Handbook also includes numerous towns and sights of interest in the surrounding vicinity and places between. It does a remarkably good job of covering such a large state.
Hopefully a new addition is in the works. Because it was published in 1998, most prices will be out-of-date, but it's so easy to now get hours & admission via web sites, that it's not that big of a problem once you've used the handbook to identify all the interesting places you want to visit.

I LOVED THIS GUIDE!!!!.......2006-12-08
Finally, for the first time, in a very long time, have I seen San Antonio and the Hill Country get the credit it's due! So many folks that live near San Antonio have never given it the chance and respect it deserves. I was so happy to see many of the great places to shop and eat at that make San Antonio so unique.
Additionally, there was so much about the Hill Country in general that I learned. I would definitely recommend this book to my friends and colleagues who are new to Texas in general. What I appreciated most about the book was that I learned of new and exciting places to see in this very big state!

Making history, vol. 2..........2004-09-23
'Making America: A History of the United States' is a wonderful introduction to American history, written in broad strokes that goes from the earliest days of European discovery, including an overview of the Native American histories, through to modern times. This second volume traces the time of the aftermath of the American Civil War to the present day, including the present Bush presidency. The final settlement of the West, expansion throughout the hemisphere, and finally expansion into a global power economically and militarily.
The first chapter in this book is a repeat of the last chapter of the first volume, to set the stage for looking at America in a post-Civil War context. Readers who have both volumes will not need to read this twice, but it is a very intelligent choice to repeat the material for those who take courses out of sequence or read volumes separately. From the aftermath of the Civil War and Reconstruction, the authors trace the development of America, largely isolated from the rest of the world diplomatically and militarily, into a largely introspective industrial power, which was nonetheless a magnet for immigration from all over the world, providing the people-power needed to fuel the engines of growth across the continent. Railroads and the big business barons feature in this part of the history.
As the West was settled, the continuing issue of the Native Americans, and how they were mistreated by the federal government, is laid out along with the political and economic upheavals occurring in all parts of the country. From these industrial and consolidation beginnings, America's involvement in foreign conflicts and issues, beginning with World War I and the League of Nations (which America helped found, but never joined) and solidifying with World War II and the United Nations, shows a history that has immediate ramifications with which we still live. Similarly, developments in the economy and civil society from the depression era, the Civil Rights era, and the Cold War all have legacies immediately apparent to people today.
The book is full of colour, with pictures, maps, graphs, and other design elements used to make reading easier and comprehension greater. Bold-faced words in the text are highlighted and explained in definition form in pull-out boxes at the bottom of many pages, which parallel with the useful glossary of terms at the back. There are chapter introductions and summaries, maps and timelines to set each chapter's context, and interesting features called 'Individual Voices' and 'Individual Choices' that draw the chapters together into overall topical agreement. The text is backed by a useful website.
We are using this two-volume set at the college where I tutor in history (among other topics). The students enjoy the text, and it is a good work to use from a teaching standpoint, too.

What a waste..........2007-03-04
This text is the worst I've ever read. The narrative is dull, the language antiquated. Worst of all, it's so poorly organized it leaves a student utterly frustrated and confused of dates and events. There are over twenty pages in between when it mentions the Missouri Compromise and who actually engineered it. If you're looking for a good history text this is not it. If you've signed up for a history course that requires this text as its primary reference source, I'd recommend dropping it.

In a provocative new interpretation of a transforming era, 1850D1920, Klein integrates social, economic, and business history and stresses the driving role of technology in creating a complex society of many cultures. As increasing organization made life more fragmented and alienated for ordinary persons, Klein argues, a unifying social thread was provided by a surprising new source: the consumer economy. Emily is a plucky little bunny with a wonderful attitude about the adventures that lie ahead as she enters kindergarten in Emily's First 100 Days of School. Her teacher, a dynamic guinea pig named Miss Cribbage, has promised a big party for the hundredth day and while Emily finds it hard to imagine that she will ever reach such a distant milestone, she passes the time by noticing all the numbers in her every day life. She finds four corners in a dancing square, is able to read seventeen words in a book and even learns about a '38 Desoto. Rather than being a mere recitation of items corresponding to a hundred numbers, the book features whimsical and poignant storylines such as the departure of Emily's best friend Diane Duck and the arrival of Angela, a new koala girl from Australia. Besides easing the transition into school by providing a likable rabbit role model, author Rosemary Wells accomplishes the neat trick of making numbers both approachable and fun. The large paperback book is the star attraction in this handy box set which also includes 100 activity cards with educational information corresponding to each number, a deck of Rosemary Wells playing cards, a paper growth chart, paper ruler, 40 stickers, and a poster with all 100 numbers in sticker form. --John Moe

Baby's Bible Friends.......2000-07-11
This book is kind of soft or cloth book and has different bible animals with felt clothes. Also it has two stuffed animals (bear and lamb) inside. My baby son (3 1/2 months old) loves to play this "cloth" book and look at different animals. The words are very easy and short. This book is very colorful but clearly to see the animals. My baby son enjoys having it so I recommend it to Christian children and family.

A Must for the Gardener's Bookshelf.......2007-07-11
What an informative book! Now I know why the chipmunks were digging up my bulbs, but not eating them. I found out what was making the notches on my lily of the valley (weevils) and what to do about it. I learned I should prune back my ajuga and give winter protection for the azaleas and rhododendrons. I also found out what the strange growths were on the azaleas.
This book covers hundreds of plants with a description, planting tips, and most common diseases and treatment. Being Rodale, the treatment is the most environmentally friendly way to solve your landscape problem.
A book I am thankful to own.......2001-02-10
This book provides easy to find solutions to your disease and insect problems. It is organized by plant common names, and there is loads of information on pests and problems associated with each plant named. I only wish there were a larger variety of less common plants. But most common ornamentals are included.

Customer Reviews:
Amazing and full of information.......2006-02-02
I was wating for years for this book to be released, and finally I got it. The information is complete and detailed about the songs/tracks that were listed on the dance charts. You can find the date that the song was first entered on the lists and the peak positions. You'd be amazed that many of the dance hits that peaked # 1 on the 100 pop chart did not make the # 1 on the dance/club play chart, and even more did not enter the chart at all. Great presentation and very well organized, it worths every penny $$$ I spent on it. I have only 2 complains about this book, first: the Dance Maxi Single Sale chart information is not listed here at all. It's a most, to have the sales information to be included in this book. How do I know that the song I danced for years was also a success on sales, for the next release of this book please have this information included. Second: it's a total pitty that the information from the electronic music charts were not included here either. The massive and most popular clubs that makes most pop/dance artist have a hit on the billboard dance charts, have been playing only danceable electronica music for years, to be more accurate, since the mid 80's. I hope this will be also included in the next release of the Hot Dance/Disco. Also I have the hope that the world hits (mostly Europeans hits) also listed on weekly billboard magazine gets to be relased on a book soon. Until then, enjoy this wonderful book.

Evelyn Lau-Contemporary Artistic Genius.......2006-12-11
I've read a good many non-fiction-autobiographies. This book is the most viscerial yet cerebral, poignant, vulnerably heart-wretching; Honest, courageous mind boggling work of artistic genius, I have ever come across.
A sheer out & out mind-bender. A work of transcendent catharsis & tragic emotional metamorphosis, from a phenomenal brilliant writer.
After assimilating Ms. Lau's enthralling, somewhat beguiling stylism, one is simply left, torn asunder, as her spellbinding beautific word pictures are rendered in such astute & sultry erudition.
Evelyn Lau's comprehensive body of work is entrancingly seductive.Hauntingly beautiful & adoit; Scintillating, yet melancholy.Enigmatic & stupefying.Ultimately, I am left dumbstruck.
Her writing has an innate ability to create an obsession & infatuation in a reader, that melts away any notion of steel remnant cold calculated logic, that men may attempt to employ toward women. The games over...
On the meridian of art in written form, we find the pleatau of spirit; Immortal soul, eternal love...embodied within Evelyn Lau's art.
Once you have read her work, your life absolutely, will never be the same again...
Poor Me. I'm A Victim And It Is Everybody Else's Fault!.......2006-08-19
This is a very tiresome and tedious book about a girl named Evelyn who ran away from home at the age of 14 because her mother yelled a lot and her father was out of work most of the time. Sadly there are millions of young people in this same situation but they don't exchange an unhappy home life for the mean, homeless streets. The author devotes page after page of an endless and futile merry-go- round of prostitution and then seeking solace through drugs. She "hooks" up with this lowlife loser named Larry who she thinks is a "nice guy" because he readily supplies her with Valium, Alcohol,Mandrax, Methadone and LSD.Evelyn tries valiantly to live up to her self created image of a tortured artist because of her scribblings in her journal but all we are left with is 276 pages of 'Poor Me" and self inflicted suffering and self pity.
Teenage ennui.......2006-08-01
Before reading this I had high expectations of it. After reading it, mostly in between classes, I'm sadly disappointed. If you're a fan of Lau's poetry you may gain some insight into them through this journal.
Honest? Yes. Brutally frank? I don't think so. Like others have said: rather than an account of struggle and hardship, all we have here is a bored teenager who did a 2-year stint as a street worker.
I also question her reason for running away. Sure, overbearing ethnic parents can be stifling and problematic when you've grown up in a western world with (somewhat) different values and ideals to those of your parents. Fair enough, they locked her in her room most of the time and forced her to study; but is that really that bad? It wasn't like they were feeding her a diet consisting of only two-minute noodles and only letting her out to have showers.
Remarkable document, less than remarkable .......2005-04-10
This is a document Evelyn kept from a remarkable phase of her life as a drug addict and prostitute on the streets of Vancouver, and a teenage and ethnic one at that. It shows some of her survival instincts which exist within her and which fight to keep her alive through it all. However, as I read on, I found myself having less and less respect for her. It went from respect for a person who fought to get out of circumstances in life she couldn't stand - not that it was horrid or anything, just not to her liking - to thinking how pathetic she was to have just wanted the change and then making herself out to be a victim of everything. I don't believe she owns up to much, or if she did, it was all "talk", cause her actions didn't back it up. By the end, she came across as a spineless jellyfish with the survival instincts of one to fight and survive whenever it happened, but her life became meaningless without the adversity that gave it a purpose to survive. She can't be happy as a "normal" person without death half staring her in the face or walking closely behind, but is a victim otherwise cause it's stalking her so closely. Interesting insight into her life, yes, but it became difficult to read without judgment, and turns monotonous of the same "routine" after a while. Better than the average book, sure, but not sure by how much. Thus the 4 stars.
The New Ann Frank.......2003-04-16
Once you start this book, Evelyn becomes you. I had to just keep reading and reading...to finish it, desperate for a happy ending. It is the TRUE diary of a young girl - dabbling in prositution, drugs, therapy and homelessness. This book offers great insight in to the mind of a adolesent, and reminds one of a not so distant past of battling the same demons. Evelyn's world view is set to critique all that crosses her path...including our correctional services, family services, and basic social acceptability. Pretty smart for a 15 year old. Many wonderful thoughts, feelings and ideas can be gained from reading this book. I would recommend this book as required reading for youths who typically DON'T read. Its a great starting point and is sure to capture their attention. But nonetheless...a great story that in the end, any reader feels privilaged to have been on the journey.
