THERE ARE BETTER OBSERVERS THAN MARY.......2007-01-18
VENICE OBSERVED
While this has become sort of a cult classic, there are better books about Venice to be read and enjoyed, written in the years since Mary McCarthy penned this book. It is a very particular, personal and peculiar look at the famed city.
It may be that this work was cutting edge for travelers in the 'Fifties, but it has long since been surpassed both in content and in tone, by more recent books, be they guidebooks or works of a more literary bent such as the gorgeous "Francesco's Venice" (written by a native of Venice) or "The City of Falling Angels" (by the award winning author of "Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil" which is a brilliant and affectionate look at the city and its people by an American) both of which I recommend highly, as in five stars--read them before considering reading this book.
Mary McCarthy is knowledgeable but she makes every effort to let you know just how very smart she is with the implication that she is smarter than you. She often quotes in other languages and let the reader puzzle them out - if you don't speak the language, then be glad your computer will do free translations for you. She also assumes you have already studied the art, architecture and history of Venice thoroughly before turning to her book, and having been thus armed with the basics from elsewhere, she will now give you her added (she would say, correct) slant.
The book is not quite painful as her book about Florence, but like that book, this too is not a volume pitched to endear one to Venice.
McCarthy's approach is that Venice is an acquired taste and most readers are not sophisticated enough to acquire it. While one feels put down by such an attitude, it is so pervasive it cannot be accidental. McCarthy tells how much better, smarter, wiser, well-read and insightful she is than any of her readers, which is an odd stance for an author to take.
And far from the reality of a visit to Venice.
You see, the reality is this: A taste for Venice can be acquired instantaneously, spontaneously, immediately. One need not know the art, architecture and history, to enjoy the sights the sounds and the people. Although knowing these things will of course add to one's visit.
Even so, all one need do is walk the winding paths from the train station to San Marco, or ride the Number 82 vaparetto full circuit to enjoy and appreciate the myriad wonders of the city on the lagoon.
To really get to know a place, one must do so with one's eyes out of the guidebooks and maps, and filled with everything there that is to be seen. Your experience of Venice may not be all Ms. McCarthy would have it be, but then why put her blinders between you and this place that poets, writers, travelers and sojourners have loved for eons.
For example, take a half-day on Murano for relief (the canals are bordered by walkways; easy to enjoy) and an inexpensive ride over to San Giorggio Maggiore to go up THAT campanile (cheaper and better views than the campanile of San Marco). See the "Must See" points of interest if you wish, but if you miss them, don't sweat it!
There are lots of surprises around every corner, over every bridge and in every shop window. The Venetians are friendly, the food is good and it is impossible to take a bad photo there.
And when you stand on the crest of the Rialto Bridge, breathe one brief, silent sigh of thanks that Mary McCarthy isn't with you correcting your impressions!

Read "The Stones of Florence" First.......2005-06-19
Written in 1956, "Venice Observed" was a precursor to "The Stones of Florence" (1959), one of the better travel books ever written. As in "The Stones of Florence," McCarthy weaves a tapestry of art, history, literature, sociology and cogent observation, but this earlier effort is not as well organized as the later book, leaving the reader to dig out the gems that lay within.
Apparently the original hardback versions of both books contained high-quality photographs, and were experiments in presenting the two modes of communication together. Depending upon which edition you buy, the paperback versions either lack photographs altogether or contain low-quality reproductions. While that obviously detracts from the experience, the text standing alone bears witness to an extraordinarily well-disciplined and fine mind at work.
Since McCarthy was born in 1912, she would have been 44 at the time this book was written, hardly the ingenue that other reviewers suggest. In fact, after reading both books, one suspects that this woman was born mature.
It is interesting to note that throughout this book, McCarthy refers to John Ruskin's "The Stones of Venice," which explains her choice of title for "The Stones of Florence."

Talk about taking the joy out of an experience. I read this book prior to a week-long trip to Venice. This book quite simply accomplished none of its objectives. It is a poor "guidebook" and is poorly written and uninteresting in terms of a travelogue. The history and art of Venice are covered better in books from those genres. The only upside is that it is short. Yuck, what a waste of time. My advice is: get a novel about Venice if you like novels, a guidebook if you want that, an art book, or a history book. At least you'll get something out of those--this one tries all of these and fails. Actually, in terms of a travelogue, "Vendela in Venice" far surpassess any other Venice book I have seen. Although I originally bought it because it is considered a children's book, it is not dumbed down at all and adults will enjoy it...
Pure pleasure.......2002-06-28
This is one of McCarthy's most delightful books, although it may also be her least controversial. VENICE OBSERVED might be the best single travel book ever written on Venice, and MCarthy's tone is leisurely and informative, her style witty and engaging. Her asides about her personal experiences in the city complement her grander historical and artistic musings: you never feel alienated from her prose (the way you can in her earlier THE STONES OF FLORENCE). Her anecdotes about the doges, Tintoretto, Veronese, the Councils, etc. greatly enhanced one's understanding of the city, and her musings on the art are thoughtful and illuminating.
For art and literature buffs...........2001-04-21
Mary McCarthy's VENICE OBSERVED is neither history nor a guide book but rather a literary reflection written by a young 1950s "single" woman who has visited a beautiful place and now sits at her desk and muses over what she has seen.
McCarthy was a writer and an educated woman in an age when educated women were few. She probably wore white gloves and a little hat and visited Europe after graduation from college. One can picture the author of THE GROUP traveling abroad, continuing her education. As part of her formal training, she read James and Ruskin and then she visited the sights they described and wrote her own impressions. I found McCarthy's book intriguing because she was intriguing and women like her don't exist any more. I picture her looking a bit like Katherine Hepburn arriving in Italy in "Summertime." Maybe McCarthy wasn't a "career girl" as single women sans husband and children who worked for a living were called in those days, but this is how I picture her on reading VENICE OBSERVED.
I've just finished reading JJ Norwich's HISTORY OF VENICE and if you want history Norwich's book is the definitive history. VENICE OBSERVED is for women who want a bit of information to complement their education mixed in with another woman's reflections. VENICE OBSERVED is for educated women who travel alone.
McCarthy includes some history, but only as a backdrop to her real interests which are art and literature. She assumes you know who Tintoretto and Titian were and that you've at least seen pictures of their works. Where Norwich mentions Tintoretto in passing (Norwich is more interested in archtecture) McCarthy dwells on him.
VENICE OBSERVED is not an art book however. McCarthy's writing reminds me of James or Ruskin, both of whom she quotes. They observed various places, buildings, paintings, etc. but always assumed you had some prior knowledge of the thing they were discussing. VENICE OBSERVED is the sort of book you'd want to read after you have made your own visit to Venice. You could read it before hand, but the text would be overwhelming if you come to it with no prior knowledge. If you want to read a more contemporary book, I recommend ITALIAN DAYS by Barbara Grizutti Harrison.

A great African American short history.......2002-03-12
This book is written for ages 9-14 and I believe the information is written at that level of understanding. It is written very clear and concise. The story or life of the 29 members in this book is different from most of the African Americans who were brought to the American shore starting 1619. It is noted that Phyllis Wheatley was brought to Boston, Massachusetts around 1761. She became a poetess after learning to read and write. She was quite lucky to have been allowed to learn to read and write as most of the other slaves were not allowed that priviledge. She is noted to have had published her first book of poems in 1773 when she was about 22 years old. The book goes on from there enumerating the discoveries and firsts that 28 other African Americans participated in up to the 21st century.
I recommend that every child as well as adult read this informative book of American firsts

I can only recommend this book(must have) to every cat owner,breeder and Vet.
It is a little bit medical, but with little effort it is good to read.
It has 8 chapters:
1) History of domestic cat and cat breeds
2) Normal genetics, genetics disorders, development anomalies
3) Reproduction and reproductive disorders
4) Common infectious diseases of multiple cat environments
5) Behavior
6) Nutrition and nutritional disorders
7) Toxicology
8) Cattery design and management
What I miss in this book is a extra index within every chapter especially in chapter 4, so I made one my self. So you do not have to search a lot.
Chapter 8 I find to sterile especially for kittens growing up, I want to breed and grow kittens and let them live in a normal family environment and not in cages no matter how beautiful they are.
That you have to have some isolated spaces for diseases or giving birth that is another thing, but for daily living all my cats live with my family in a secure home and garden.
BTW: his first book is also very good: Feline infectious diseases, but also out of print :-((
The most excellent book for cat rescuers, fosterers, etc........2002-04-01
This is a book I've given to a number of people. It is EXCELLENT for anyone doing cat rescue, fostering cats, doing TNR (trap neuter return, to stabilize cat colonies).
It's not *that* hard to read! Really sets out and discusses many issues and problems of "multi-cat environment" (> 5 cats).
Highly recommended.

A Great Resource.......2001-04-05
This book is one you need if you need detailed information. Except for behavior problems, there is everything you need to know about illnesses, breeding, kittening, genetics and other hard-to-find info. It has answered many of my questions to which I could find answers no where else.

I think this is the third one I've bought. I refer to it constantly - and get calls from people who know I have it. I even sent one to my vet. As Pederson explains - anyone with more than two or three cats is dealing with a multi-cat environment - a fact that both the cat owner and their vets need to acknowledge. Excellent section on setting up a cattery.

The new 2004 Edition of The Charlton Standard Catalogue of Canadian Government Paper Money will be released in July, 2003. The previous edition sold out early, resulting in the preparation of the new book ahead of the normal schedule.
Few government note collecting categories have been untouched by price changes. Most of the changes have been increases, but there are also a few decreases where supplies on the market have increased or collector interest has stalled. Changes have not been universal, but restricted to selected note issues.
Among Newfoundland issues, there has been a conspicuous increase in demand for 1920 $1 and $2 treasury notes, with prices pushing upward. Province of Canada notes have moved upward again, while action on Dominion notes is more selective. Some issues have not shown much change; others, including the 1878 and 1912 issues, have moved forward at least for selected grades. Common varieties of the 1923 $1 notes have advanced in high grades while giving up a little ground in conditions below VF, whereas $2 notes of the same issue show increases in better grades with little change in lower grades. Dealers report that there are plenty of well circulated 1923 $1 notes available in relation to collector demand.
The 1935 first issue of the Bank of Canada seems unstoppable, with high grade notes in the higher denominations climbing sharply higher. A 1935 French $100 note in AU/UNC condition recently sold for $19,500 plus tax, prompting a dramatic hike for that particularly rare issue. The 1937 Bank of Canada notes have shown more modest increases for selected notes.
Among the more recent Bank of Canada issues, many of the asterisk, X and insert replacement notes have shown sharp gains while the regular issues have been generally steady. Additional insert note prefixes have been added, with their number ranges, while the serial number ranges of others have been tightened up using new information from ongoing research.
Among the "back of the book" specialty notes, number 1 and solid serial number notes continue to advance, while the millions - numbered notes have given up a little ground. A new type of error note, with multiple serial numbers, has been added to the listings and priced. At the same time, notes with missing OSD's have been deleted as it has been discovered recently that the OSD's can easily be removed without a trace by a commercial cleaning compound. Several new error note illustrations have been added.
The 16th Edition GPM consists of 336 pages, continuing with the spiral lay-flat binding which proved so popular with the last edition, in 5.5 X 8.5 inch page format.

The 17th Edition of the Charlton Standard Catalogue of Canadian Government Paper Money was released at the Canadian Numismatic Association convention in Toronto, July 2004.
New listings have been added, keeping the book up to date with recent issues and modern insert note discoveries. Listings for the 1937 Bank of Canada issue have been expanded, with separate entries for prefix varieties issued in lower quantities.
Reflecting the vibrantly healthy state of this growing hobby, almost all price changes have been in the positive direction, with very few downward corrections. In previous editions of the book, the "stars" were usually the 1935 first Bank of Canada notes, showing the largest price increases. This year, however, they have been somewhat eclipsed by replacement notes. While the 1935 issues continue their inexorable rise in value, some replacement note entries have increased by 100% or even more. Although they remain controversial, many of the modern "insert" replacement notes have likewise increased significantly in value.
Dominion notes have shown stronger and more broadly based advances than they have for several years. Uncirculated Princess Patricia $1 notes in particular have moved sharply higher. Some of the early provincial treasury notes, which remained static through several editions, have moved upward. Notes issued by the Newfoundland government have remained stable, with modest increases affecting top grade black and white cash notes. It has been determined that the Keating-Brownrigg signature combination on 1920 treasury notes is scarcer than had been thought, resulting in increased values for them.
The emergence of the 1937 Bank of Canada issue from its former lethargy is quite striking. As the 1935 notes increasingly become priced out of reach of many collectors, attention appears to be turning to the 1937 series, as indicated by price increases across most varieties and conditions.
Special number notes remain popular, and prices have again moved ahead for many low number, radar and ladder listings. Among error notes, one new type has been listed and illustrated, having the bar code absent from the back of the note. Notes showing signature errors have generally increased in value.
The 17th Edition Government Paper Money consists of 360 pages, in 5½" x 8 ½" page format. The book will continue the spiral binding format which has proved popular with most users.

The 20th Edition of the Charlton Standard Catalogue of Canadian Government Paper Money will be released at the Canadian Numismatic Association convention in Niagara Falls, July 13, 2007. The most striking change with this edition is the increased number of pricing columns for Bank of Canada notes, 1935 to date, with the addition of Choice Uncirculated and Gem Uncirculated grades. The grading standards in the introduction have been modified to describe three levels of uncirculated condition. It is fully expected that these changes may be controversial, but the publisher felt that it was preferable to devise a made in Canada grading system for Canadian paper money, than to concede to foreign grading practice by default. With the recent publication of authoritative number ranges printed for many of the asterisk replacement notes, the ranges based on lowest and highest numbers observed have been replaced with official numbers wherever possible. The catalogue has been updated to include the new issue of $5 notes and recent insert note discoveries. Insert replacement note number ranges now conform to a newly published mathematical model, resulting in widened ranges in some cases. This would not, however, result in an increase in the number of uncirculated notes available for any prefixes which were fully issued into circulation some time ago. The hobby continues to grow in popularity, with new collectors joining the ranks and looking for nontraditional ways to collect. In this regard, notes with repeater serial numbers are receiving attention, and have been recognized in the special numbers section of the catalogue. As the unprecedented bull market continues, valuations for the most part continue their relentless forward march. Exceptions are mainly confined to the commoner multicoloured and birds issues, where in some cases higher values attracted substantial quantities of notes onto the market. With supplies of such material in excess of demand, these notes could only be sold at substantially discounted prices. Prevailing sentiment on the pricing panel was negative for such notes, and values have accordingly been revised downward. Dominion notes have been valued higher across a fairly broad front, at least for selected grades. The 1912 Train notes, for which demand seems insatiable, have been stellar performers once again. Some of the largest increases are seen, as usual, among the 1935 Bank of Canada notes. The King George VI issue of 1937 also shows strong demand, most notably for notes with the Osborne-Towers signatures. The Devil s Face notes of 1954 continue to be popular. Modified portrait and multicoloured series asterisk replacement notes, after several years of spectacular price increases, are now rising at a more sedate pace. Notes belonging to changeover prefix series have risen rather dramatically in value with this edition. Notes of the Journey series, particularly the insert replacement notes, show many price increases. At the back of the book, special number and error notes have moved ahead, if somewhat selectively, in pricing. The 20th Edition of the Charlton Standard Catalogue of Canadian Government Paper Money consists of 416 pages, in 5.25 X 8.25 inch page format. Authoritatively written by horticultural therapist Hank Bruce (who is also president of the Florida Chapter of the American Horticultural Therapy Association), Gardening For The Senses, Gardening As Therapy is not an ordinary gardening book - it deals with the mental, emotional, and spiritual needs that gardening fulfils, through its quiet beauty and appeal to the physical senses. From the ten most fragrant flowering plants to gardening as a means of connecting with Life, the first section of this book deals with how gardening specifically for one's senses can bring new joy and fulfillment to this age-old endeavor. The other two sections of this book deal with how gardening can be used as therapy to benefit children, the developmentally disabled, recovering addicts, survivors of abuse, Alzheimer's patients and more. Gardening For The Senses, Gardening As Therapy is highly recommended for its creativity, and truly delivers on its intent to show the hidden values of gardening to the people in need of stress relief and emotional restoration.

Book Description
Establishment Violence in Philo and Luke deals with nonconformity to the Jewish Torah and violent counter reactions as discussed in the works of Philo of Alexandria and narrated in the Lukan Acts of the Apostles. The author works with several social science models in vogue in recent research, but especially applies a model of establishment violence (or vigilantism) as worked out by H.J. Rosenbaum and P.C. Sederberg (1976). The study contains five chapters, focusing on three often neglected texts from Philo, and the texts of the Lukan Acts concerning Stephen and Paul in Jerusalem.

Am not familiar with the work of Joe Phillips. Bought the book on a hunch thinking it was a comic book. Was sadly disappointed that there were only paintings which were out of this world, but no reading matter.
That's why the 4 star rating.
Otherwise the book and layouts are perfect and the artwork droolicious !!!

In the previous years this calendar was lightly erotic but for 2007 it boldly moves to the next step with beautiful men on full display. The calendar is dimensionally smaller this year but the pictures are still sinfully delicious to the eyes.
This calendar is for the gay man who enjoys hand drawn erotica as opposed to photography.

This is just enough of the artwork of Joe Phillips to satisfy. More creative and playful than FOR THE BOYS or THE ADVENTURES OF JOE BOY, this book will be a welcome additon to your library.
A must-own for any collector.......2003-08-04
Joe Phillips' newest book contains some of the most stunning, inspiring artistic depictions of carefree and fun-loving young men anywhere. Phillips is perhaps best known for his work for Xodus Magazine and Jocko Underwear, but the glossy, full-color air-brushed drawings in this book are pure art. The only criticism for this book is that several of the images have been published previously in calendar form (hence the 4 stars instead of 5). Simultaneously both homoerotic and tasteful, this beautifully bound volume is essential to any serious collector of homoerotica or cartoons/comics.

Deng Xiaoping has been one of the late-twentieth century's preeminent statesmen. The life of Deng Xiaoping mirrors the history of China in the twentieth century - beginning with a rural upbringing, then militant revolutionary activities until the CCP seized power in 1949.
