Helpful guide.......2003-09-10
I spent a few weeks in Michigan this summer and found this book to be a helpful guide to the state's wildflowers. I could walk through a field and identify a dozen different varieties in just a few minutes, thanks to this book.
You couldn't go more wrong..........2001-09-24
purchasing a book on Michigan wildflowers. There are numerous inaccuracies throughout the book, and the information is relatively unhelpful. Before purchasing this book, keep in mind this book is part of a "series"; Mr. Tekiela has a book on "Ohio Wildflowers" coming out within a year of this one! I doubt the author has spent time in Michigan looking for these plants, and I'm sure none of the photos are from the state either. This is a money-making deal at best. Purchase any other book on the state's wildflowers and you'll have spent your money in a more satisfying way.

Scholarly presentation.......2004-06-16
I have used the library's copy for reference around my home. Comparing with other books on this subject, this has more detailed descriptions, with the botanists' technical jargon and line drawings. The plants are organized by plant families. The jargon lends succinctness, but you have to remember the meanings. The drawings show characteristics, often better than photos, but color is omitted. Uses made of the plants, and other interesting information, are given, as well as details distinguishing one species from another. The author gives several common names for those species having multiple names, as well as the scientific names.
This book is better than others for scholarly presentation, but more popular concepts would appeal more to people with casual interest in the subject.

Handy and Quick but.......2007-09-18
very limited in scope. The drawings are good enough for identification but they are common plants rather than some of the more unusual that are around.

Average book........2006-08-24
My old Michigan Wildflower book was over 25 years old. I thought this one would have much more wildflowers in it. It did not. I was somewhat dissapointed in it.
Revised edition with wildflower walks.......2004-07-10
This book was originally published in 1985, and my copy belongs to the eighth printing in 1999. Its popularity is well-deserved. Author and photographer, Harry C. Lund has spent many years hiking through bogs, forests, meadows, and sand dunes in Michigan's Upper and Lower Peninsulas and its off-shore islands in order to put together this book for us. I have yet to find a Michigan wild flower that isn't listed in this guide. The book is well-bound and would easily fit into your backpack for a walk through the wild.
The flower photographs are grouped by color for ease of location. They are then listed in the order in which they appear during the growing season, which is a little trickier to use. I basically start at the beginning of a color group and page through until I find the flower I'm trying to identify. There are generally six photographs to a page, with the text on the facing page. In some cases, the photographs are a bit too small to easily recognize the flower, but when combined with the text there should be no identification problem.
At the beginning of "Michigan Wildflowers in Color," the author has illustrated textual terms such as 'stipules' or 'basal leaves' with a collection of line drawings. The plant descriptions include location, seasonal display, height, and information on whether the flower is protected and should not be picked or moved.
There is a quiz at the back of the book to test your 'flower power.' There is also an 'Observer's List' to keep track of the flowers you do find. Unfortunately, the first entry I wanted to check off wasn't on the list! Perhaps this is because Crown Vetch is not really a wild flower, although its photograph and description appear in the main section of this book.
The author has also mapped out eight wildflower trails in various Michigan habitats, plus the seasonal species of flowers that can be found there.
In total, "Michigan Wildflowers in Color" is a very helpful guide, especially when used in combination with a book like the Peterson "Field Guide to Wildflowers" where the drawings might serve as a confirmation or a backup to Lund's photographs. Leaves in particular are easier to identify through Peterson's drawings.
Michigan Wildflowers in Color.......2002-08-23
I have found this guide extremely helpful in identifying species found near our summer home in Michigan. It has excellent photographs, arranged by color, and a chart showing habitats, seasons, and growing conditions. There is a blank chart for entering your own finds. It is informative and user friendly. I would recommend it highly to both novice and experienced wildflower lovers.

Great photos and variety; less than adequate description.......2000-06-06
The best feature of this book is the photos, period. There are some excellent shots of wildflowers from the dunes, prairies, woodlands, and wetlands found throughout the book. Plants are grouped according to their habitat, making plants easier to identify in the field than they would be in an ordinary key. There are quite a few problems with the book, though. Bloom dates are very misleading and seem to be stilted to the very northern portion of the range covered. There is also a misidentification of appendaged waterleaf (canada waterleaf in this book), which is an oversight considering three botanists worked on the manuscript. There are also quite a few spelling errors that should have been corrected. Finally, the information is tired and recycled from the writers' past works. Great for the photos but I was highly disappointed by the text.
Book Description
A full-length Bradt country guide to Cameroon, in West Africa.
Customer Reviews:
Helpful, but very dated info.......2006-01-18
I have just returned from 3 weeks in Cameroon and this book made the trip with me. My trip was not the usual tourist excursion, as I traveled with expat Cameroonians and lived exclusively with africans. I could go for days without seeing another european and when I did they were usually zipping past in a tour bus or in an NGO vehicle.
First, the positives. The book is well organized and the local Cameroonians were usually impressed that someone would write so much about their country. The advice presented in the book is generally sound and the descriptions accurate. Douala is an "armpit": shrouded in smog during the dry season, scented by the smoke of burning garbage, and made all the more enjoyable by sweltering heat and oppressive humidity. On the basis of the positives, I would award the book 4 stars.
The negatives? Much of the information regarding accommodations is quite dated. For instance, the description of the Skyline Hotel in Bamenda is at least five to seven years old. It has been years since the pool had water, the night club is closed, the hotel is frequently without electricity and is in a general state of disrepair and decay. Of course, this is merely symptomatic of the overall decay prevalent throughout Cameroon. Do not rely on the phone numbers listed for the hotels, as many may have changed. On the basis of the negatives I would award the book 2 stars.
Overall, however, I can recommend the book as a serviceable resource for planning a trip and as a useful tool while in country.
This book made me cancel my trip to Cameroon.......2005-11-27
This book describes Cameroon as the armpit of Africa. Seriously. It said that. At least 1/3 of the book is on all the different types of diseases one is sure to catch being there. It says that Cameroon is unique in that there is a type of malaria that will KILL you in 24 hours of the first symptom. This book scared me so much that I went to Egypt alone instead of going with my friends to Cameroon. There arent really any books just on Cameroon. Lonely Planet has one on West Africa which I should have gotten. My friends went and had a wonderful time. The book should have talked about the good things this country has- which as it turns out there are other things there that Malaria! Perhaps if I would of read a different book then I would have not canceled my flight to Cameroon.

amazing.......2006-01-05
I read this book for a biography report. I actually am not a big , fan of biographies, but this one reads like a novel. The book has a glossary in the back which is very helpful. It exceeded all of my expectations and I reccomend it to all ages 12 and above.
Interesting point of view from the infamous Malinche!.......2005-10-19
The history seems accurate based on other sources I've read about the conquest of Mexico, but it might be a difficult read for youngsters. The language is difficult in the beginning with so much Aztec vocabulary, but you get used to it after awhile. There is a helpful glossary in the back to help with the definitions and pronounciation. It was interesting to understand the history from Malinche's viewpoint. I think it was helpful that I already had some understanding of the conquest before reading this book. A good supplement to the study of the Aztecs and Cortez.

Book Description
This is our seventh set of Happy, Healthy Pet titles. Like the others, they are books pet owners can turn to for the essential information they need to raise a healthy, happy pet. All books contain information on:
- feeding
- grooming
- housing
- health care
- what to expect from the pet
- basic training
As our series expands and focuses on different kinds of pets, the emphasis remains on making the pet a companion. Owners of more unusual pets will particularly appreciate the expert advice in these books because professional care for exotic animals can be hard to come by. As always, the instruction on the books is from experts—people who know their pets intimately but always remember what it was like to have one the first time.
Happy, Healthy Pet guides are rich with professional quality color photos and are designed to be enjoyable and easy to learn from. More and more people are discovering each year what affectionate, intelligent and charming pets rats can be. Ginger Cardinal already knows. She's the former president of the Rat, Mouse and Hamster Society and a longtime breeder, exhibitor, judge and dedicated companion of these special rodents.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent book for newbies!.......2007-09-10
If you are like we were, rookies with rats, buy this book. It taught us everything that we needed to know about pet rat ownership. It is an invaluable tool for those new to rats and a great refresher for the pro rat owners.
Excellent and Informative.......2006-12-07
This book is so much better than the "Barron's" series one. It is written in a way that kids and adults can understand. And I loved the humor sprinkled within. It felt like I was learning from a seasoned owner. =0) Nice personal touch! I learned much from this book and look forward to putting this knowledge to use!
Pretty Good.......2005-02-09
Most of the information is good, but there are some things it recommends that I wouldn't. I thought the cages she recommends are a little small, and that some of the bedding wasn't appropriate. Other than that, it was all right.
Pretty good, but lacking in some descriptions.......2003-09-08
This book has much good information about pet rats, but I didn't find some information I was looking for. There were very good tips on how to decide if a pet rat is right for you and on recommended cages and different toys rats like and don't like. We have two pet rats we bought at a pet store that look like the rat on the cover, but I had trouble determining what variety these are based on the descriptions and pictures. Also, the cage size recommendation was only for one rat, so I wasn't sure how big of a cage I need for two rats. In the Feeding Your Rat chapter, lab blocks and dog kibble were mentioned as staples, but the pet store had rat food which appears to be a mixture primarily of seeds and some food blocks. I couldn't tell from the book, whether this mixture of food was good for my rat. It would help if the book covered more information on what is available in pet stores and whether these are best for a pet rat.
All in all though, a pretty complete book.
the ultimate pet manual.......2000-07-27
I have almost 50 pets, so I do a lot of reading on my special friends. This book is my favorite book about rats. I recommend it each time I sell a rat at the pet store I work at. It is wonderful to have on hand as a reference and to read just for fun. The chapters on health care and training are especially well done. Anyone who loves ratties should have this book!

Customer Reviews:
My class loved it!.......2005-01-25
Using this book has helped me teach my class some very interesting lessons.
I began by teaching them about literary art as we studied Anne of Green Gables. We had the doll and the book as we read the book in class.
Next, we studied other countries and even a few of our own states, Alaska and Hawaii using dolls in their traditional outfits.
Antoher project the students enjoyed was making their own book. Each child brought in a picture of their favorite doll or one of someone they knew. Then they had to write about what made the doll special. Each child then read their story to the class and this helped in their comunication skills and public speaking.
We then made a booklet with a picture and story from each student. These will be treasured books that will be kept as keepsakes.
I had the opportunity to get a doll artist to come speak to our class and to demonstrate how art dolls are made. Then the students made a simple felt doll that they could take home to remember the event.
Our projects have made learning fun and we will keep our copy of Doll's Aren't Just for Kids in our class library.
odd, misleading book.......2005-01-06
I obtained this book partly because of the glowing Amazon.com reviews, but instead of a definitive doll book, I found a quirky self-published book, heavy on the text and with a definite Christian in-crowd bias. ("Garrison Oaks Publishing" publishes books only by these family authors.) The art doll on the cover quickly gives way to Baby Think It Over dolls (to discourage teen pregnancy) and dolls based on the "Elsie Dinsmore" books by Martha Finley, which were designed to "strengthen Martha Finley's Biblical hold on the development of tomorrow's leaders." There are some interesting chapters devoted to specific doll companies, typically "godly" ones. This is fine if that's what you want, but I get the sense that the authors have gone to some lengths to market this book as a general doll guide, when it is anything but.
Country Charm.......2003-11-03
Dolls Aren't Just for Kids provided me with a few hours of fun entertainment with a subject that is close to my heart.
This book takes you from a story set in Nova Scotia to The Strawbery Banke Museaum in Portsmouth, N.H and The Museum of Childhood.
It contains information on displaying your dolls and creating press releases for local newspapers.
Art dolls are my favorite and Joyce Miko, President & Executive Director of The Academy of American Doll Artists, Inc. and The Visual Arts Academy of Concord was one of the informative chapters that helped me get in contact with this group.
They put on various events and workshops throughout the year and they have all levels of artisans.
The book also helped me find some outstanding doll websites that lead to more information of doll shows, supplies and artists opportunities.
Anyone who loves dolls and likes to read stories about other doll lovers and their dolls will enjoy this book.
Relaxing read.......2003-10-18
This book brought back memories of my own childhood.
Pleasant,fun, educational.

Customer Reviews:
Glad I found it.......2000-01-23
I looked for this book on Amazon.com because, of all the many library books I have checked out to research my new, small, greenhouse business, this was the one so densely packed with useful information that I feel I should own it. If there are better books out there for a new grower like me, I wish I knew what they were! As I am planning to be certified organic, I appreciated that this book, although conventional in it's treatment of chemical use, also expressed the concerns for human safety and for the environment that all growers who do use chemicals should be aware of. The details about individual plants, container sizes, and sample planting to marketing dates are invaluable. I was beginning to think they were industry secrets since no other book provided them. I also appreciated the clear and concise writing.
Where's the beef?.......1999-01-02
Same old growing info, nothing about marketing plants or about preserving the enviorment. Its promotions state a enviormental friendly book, could not figure this one out , it seems to have used this to promote this well written book,. Note-- one magazine ad says, this companys name is the Enviormental Press, ( REAL NAME Admire Press) but not one metion of the enviorment in this book. Lots of the same growing info found in library, no good greenhouse pictures, all seem to be 20 years old.

Book Description
In answering questions such as what is `modern' in literary criticism since the beginnings of the Early Modern age, this book does not follow the lines of Rene Wellek's famous History of Modern Criticism. It does not re-examine the history of literary theories and poetics. It rather focuses on the concepts and uses of what can be called `practical criticism' ( Buchkritik) and the historicity of its institutional and categorical frames of references. Viewing them as fundamental structures of literary production, reception and communication, this study traces the emergence of a temporalization of cultural processing, the periodical organization of a critical response as published in the new medium of the journal, and the development of different uses and functions of the literary canon. In analysis, two basic paradigms of criticism have to be confronted: the classical model of a critica perennis, as part of grammatica as an institution of learning, and the new conception and practice of critique mondaine, which emerges as an institution in its own right during the 16th and 17th centuries in Europe.

Customer Reviews:
A horse health care book that doesn't mention colic?.......2006-01-22
This is a good basic book for beginners, but if you have any experience with horses at all it will be WAY to basic for you. it doesn't even mention colic! It should at least list the warning signs. The leg wrapping sections are useful, but really, does anyone really step by step instructions about how to put a blanket on a horse?
A great book for the new horse owner!.......2002-12-12
This is a great book for the new owner who hasn't been brought up aroung horses. It has great pictures and goes into a lot of detail about nutrition, vaccinations, illness/injury, age characteristics ect.
A Beginner's Guide.......2002-07-27
This is truly for a first-horse owner or someone who is leasing a horse and who wants to learn the basics of horse health care. I found several of the chapters useful for treatments that I needed to give for the first time, but there are other sections that aren't as practical and there is a lot of space devoted to black and white photographs, which are not too useful either as it's difficult to look for differences in texture or coloration that the text elaborates on. Having said this, for a true beginner it is an adequate foundation and would be appropriate for a younger rider/reader as well.
Only For Beginers.......2000-05-21
In my opinion, this book is not worth buying, unless you are truly a beginner. And even then, you will quickly outgrow this book. It contains practices that you can quickly pick up at the stable where your lessons are. To learn them from others at your stable will more likely help you, because it will be in more detail and you will watch someone do it.
This book made owning a horse a lot easier.......1999-09-02
Without Cherry Hill and her books with all the pictures I am sure I would have been panicking at every little scratch on my horses. She explains things so a non-horse person can understand without having to run to dictionaries or other horse reference books to look up her explaination. I buy all her books as I find them and enjoy her friendly way of writing. Thank you Cherry Hill for taking the time to make the explaination interesting and informative.

The BEST Book I Have Ever Read.......2002-06-21
Falling Leaves was an AMAZING book. It was touching and heart-wrenching, and I could not put it down. Adeline Yen Mah's story is so sad, and one realizes all the obstacles she had to overcome. I highly recommend this book for all mature readers, as it is an excellent and eye-opening work of art.
heart retching, I could not put it down........1999-08-15
all of us cling to the belief that our parents would love us and protect us no matter what. This book brought home the cruel fact that family members are related by chance only. It,s lottery!! I heart ached as Adeline recalled her story. I felt I was living her life while I was reading the book.I was that little girl that no one wanted to remember .At the same time, I wanted to reach across time and hug her and confort her. Perhaps it's impossible to imagine all this if one had grown up in a warm and loving family. I salute Adeline for her courage to get her story out. Most of us whom have survived similar experience could not bear to even admit to ourselves that our family did not care. After all, It might mean we were not lovable. "falling Leaves" is a wonderful study of family dynamics . Each charcter teachs me something about human nature. Most of all, I appalud the human spirit. Adeline has shown that out of the mud, a lovely lily emerges.
