Some excellent, some poor.......2006-08-16
If you spend any time in the Columbia River Gorge looking for wildflowers, this is a book you should have. Really, I'd like to give this book 3.5 stars, but Amazon doesn't permit that kind of specificity. It is, however, of virtually no use outside the gorge. The best part of the book is easily the lists of when species are in flower in each section (west, middle, east) of the gorge and places where you can find the best wildflower blooms throughout the year. The book is also very thorough, as virtually every flowering plant in the gorge is listed in the book.
Unfortunately, the book is extremely difficult to navigate because the flowers are organized by family. Also, there are no plant descriptions given, and, as such, it is impossible to tell the difference between similar species based on the photos. As for the photos, they are hit and miss, with some of them quite good, and others insufficient to identify a flower.
Overall, the book is worth getting for the lists of when plants are in flower and where, but as a field guide, it is insufficient. Pairing it with Turner and Gustafson's "Wildflowers of the Pacific Northwest" would give you nearly all you need to find and identify most every flowering plant in the gorge.
Nice pictures, poorly organized.......2005-05-12
This book is great for people who do a lot of hiking in the Gorge, as it contains color photos of just about every flower you're likely to see out there.
However: unless you're a botanist, the organizational scheme of the book is terrible. Rather than being grouped by color, or even shape, the flowers are organized by family (phlox family, pea family, rose family, etc.) -- and the casual wildflower enthusiast has no idea that, for example, something that looks like forget-me-nots must be in the waterleaf family. Even if you do know which family to look in, there are no running heads at the top of the pages to help you find what you're looking for, and they're not alphabetical but rather grouped into four "sections" that are not explained or introduced. So you basically have to find things either by using the index (assuming you know what the flower MIGHT be), or by leafing through the entire book every time.
I'm not saying you shouldn't buy this book, because nothing else covers the Gorge so thoroughly, but I'd recommend ALSO picking up something like the Audobon field guide (ISBN 0375402330), which does group flowers by color and shape and should point you in the right direction when trying to find things in the Gorge book. The upcoming "Wildflowers of the Pacific Northwest" from Timber Press (ISBN 0881927457), due to be released in March 2006, should be even better.
The Ultimate Guide to Wildflowers of the Gorge.......2004-11-08
Jolley's book is an indispensable field guide for hikers, mountainbikers and motorists visiting the Columbia River Gorge. This book includes color photos and descriptions of all 744 known species found in the Gorge, including plants endemic to the Gorge. Includes blooming times and locations for each species. Also includes week-by-week trip suggestions for finding plants at the peak of bloom. Whether you are a casual visitor or a wildflower enthusiast, I guarantee that this book will enrich the hours that you spend in the Gorge.
Carry this one in your packpack.......2001-07-13
One of the very best area-specific wildflower books ever. Descriptions and photographs make identification easy. The guide to location includes best times to go, roads to travel and paths to follow.

These books are great for parent and childern to read together. And both will enjoy all the books by this author. I did and when my childern where older I passed them onto another child, and aday care so they can enjoy. I had the books for eight years. And my childern loved them so much they did not even ruin them.

Illuminated Borders In Full Color from Dover Pictorial Archives.......2006-03-12
Wonderful source for illumination ideas. Beautiful coloring of the plates, and very clear images. The only problem I had with this book was the very high gloss of the pages. It made it difficult to use for picture reference since you had to hold it at an odd angle to remove the glare from any lights. Otherwise, this book is well worth the money paid. The Dover Series have easily become my favorite source for needlework, illumination, painting, and artwork ideas.
The good verses the bad... Who wins?.......2000-01-30
The book is lovely to look at, but who goes around buying books JUST to look at the pictures? The borders are vibrant and catch your eye with their originality and style but what can you really do with them? The sides are extremely uneven leaving no real way to fix and "pixel-push" into a usable piece of artwork. There is no hope for this book when dealing with graphical design. You should save your money for something better.
Some good news... Some bad news..........1999-11-27
The borders of this book are beautiful, hence three stars - there's no doubt about that. However, it's very hard to find uses for them. Some are actually extremely larger on one side than the other, so, if using the entire thing was ever your plan - you're pretty much out of luck. The difference in side sizes are obviously intentional - but bad. I do not recommend this book to anyone looking to use it for web designs.
an excellent sourcebook for graphic artists.......1999-02-01
A wonderful sourcebook of Victorian border designs. The colors are vibrant and scan well, although there is some ghosting from images on the reverse of the page. Many of the designs can be made fully tileable with a little pixel pushing. The copyright allows use of up to 10 images per project. I am extremely pleased with this purchase!
Book Description
This book is for horse enthusiasts at all levels of ability, providing a comprehensive program to improve the skills of both horse and rider. Viewing matters from the horse's point of view, the author seeks to give a better understanding of how the equine mind works, how it is influenced by environment, and how sympathetic schooling methods can be used to enhance overall performance.
Section One gives an insight into horse psychology and behavior in an easy-to-follow question-and-answer format. Section Two is an A–Z listing of the important topics in schooling and understanding equine behavior. Detailed action plans are included.

Very good - for what it is meant for.......2002-09-30
This book has a short 20 page introduction to horse behavior and language, and from there it continues in encyclopedia style, with lots of horse related items described in alphabetical order. Usually I don't like this type of book at all and avoid it, but this one was an exception. First, it is down to the point, no word is wasted! Yet it is very easy to read and understand. The other thing I liked very much is WHAT it says is very horsefriendly ("natural horsemanship" oriented), sounds very sensible and logical. There is a wealth of information for a very broad range of horse topics.
Of course, due to the nature (i.e. the form) of the book no one subject is treated very extensively. This means it is good only to get an overview over horsemanship related topics - but at this it is REALLY good!

The first; the best?.......2004-07-12
Jason Schneider has written more about collectible cameras than anyone (though British author Ivor Matanle comes close). His monthly (now bi-monthly in Popular Photography) columns in Modern Photography on camera collecting are, for most of us, the fountainhead of camera collecting information. These columns are collected in a three book set, too long out of print.
Though very opinionated, perhaps even curmudgeonly in tone, these essays are cram-packed with information that can not be found anywhere else. Look forward to hours of enjoyable reading about old cameras and collecting.
If you are interested in camera collecting you MUST have this set. Unfortunately, only available used.
Highly recommended! Two thumbs WAY up!
Customer Reviews:
Excellent for the beginning urban gardener........2007-06-06
This book is short, but it packs quite a punch. It contains many photos which are useful in diagnosing diseases, etc. This is a great starting point for the beginning urban gardener (like me) who is attempting to make the most of limited space. The authors keep keep things short, sweet, and to the point. If you're wondering what sorts of containers to use, how deep you should plant various seeds, what varieties thrive best in containers, etc., this is a great place to start. At the very least, it's a nice reference book to have on hand for for the urban gardener.
Marvelous volume and full of good information........2007-03-08
I am a Gardening Idiot. I like growing things, but I have no idea why some of my plants thrive and some of them drop dead. I decided it would be easier to isolate some of the variables (I play a scientician during the work week) if I grew more things in containers, particularly since I am now getting into more exotic fruits and berries that actually cost real money. The trouble, of course, is that there is a bewildering array of containers and conditions for people like me to choose from.
This book was recommended by someone on the Internet as a great source of information on soil, placement, containers, and cultivars (varieties of a given plant -- don't laugh, I didn't know what it meant) that are best suited for container gardens. For example -- dwarf fig trees are fiction. You can, however, restrain a fig tree's growth. You just don't feed and water it as much, and you put it in a big pot. (Eventually I suspect that you will have to either kill it or move it outside, but I'm not there yet)
My biggest relief is that the book showed me how to meet the somewhat stringent preferences of the Mara des Bois strawberries that I'm growing this season. I didn't realize that strawberry planters are shaped the way they are so that the plants can share the soil (which you feed from the top with organic matter, i.e. compost). The net benefit (which I assume people have known for decades) is that you can manage the soil for a dozen or so plants at once, since their roots are close together and the pH/moisture is pretty much the same for all of them. There are more complicated ways to achieve this (eg. the Earthbox design), but they don't seem to work any better for what I am doing. So the book saved me some needless spend, too.
I paid $3 for this book. If I got as much value out of every $3 I spent, I would be an incredibly happy guy. Even after perusing all the books at the local library (and the Los Angeles Public Library is *immense*), I still think this book delivered for me. I would have paid 5 times as much if I'd seen it in a bookstore, and I would not have regretted it for a second.
Great information and extremely clear guidance for a very reasonable price.
Think farming on a smaller scale..........2002-10-19
Want to grow fruit trees but don't think you have the space? Like to try new vegetable varieties but never remember where you planted them? Kids want to start a garden of their own but you don't want to give up the space? Movable Harvests has your answers to all these dilemmas. There are tips on creating the perfect potting mix and picking the right container as well as basic crop growing instructions. Pest control is addressed on a by-vegetable basis and is split between cultural and chemical controls. Movable Harvests has good ideas for all sorts of crops from fruits and berries to salad greens and root vegetables. You can grow ANYTHING in a container. A final, although short, chapter provides instructions on indoor farming including how to grow your own dwarf banana tree.
Wonderful starting book!.......2001-03-07
I have found this book a wonderful starting point for vegetable gardening in containers. It has chapters on proper containers, soil mixes, all natural ways to deal with pests, fertilizing options, and many helpful suggestions, even has a section for growing indoors. I originally checked it out at the library, and have found it so helpful that I am ordering my own copy!
Finally a book about growing fruits/vegetables in containers.......1998-02-07
This is the only book I have found that covers growing vegetables in containers. It is a good start. It provides just enough information about the all important-soil recipes, companion plants, container sizes & types, watering, pests, fertilizers and suitable crops. It's not a big book, which is why I can't give it my highest rating. I am still looking for something more in depth and with more personal experiences, ergo the reason for my web site LinLu's Container Gardening -

Book Description
An amazing (and some would say magical) resource on photographic lighting that has been talked about in the community and recommended for years. This highly respected guide has been thoroughly updated and revised for content and design - it is now produced in full color! It introduces a logical theory of photographic lighting so if you are starting out in photography you will learn how to predict results before setting up lights. This is not primarily a how-to book with only set examples for you to copy. Rather, Light: Science and Magic provides you with a comprehensive theory of the nature and principles of light to allow you to use lighting to express your own creativity.
Numerous photographs and illustrations provide clear examples of the theories, while sidebars highlight special lighting questions. Expanded chapters on available light in portraiture, as well as new information on digital equipment and terminology make this a must have update!
*New four color art package with contemporary lighting examples
*Based on the behaviour of light
*Theory book for serious photographers
Customer Reviews:
Excellent study.......2007-10-09
This book describes itself as a grammar of lighting. I would add that it is a descriptive rather than a prescriptive grammar, that is, it tells you how lighting works as a matter of fact, rather than trying to tell you what you should do as a photographer. I'm still rereading chapters and getting something from them, perhaps especially because I'm taking the authors' suggestion and trying to do the exercises myself.
While it is not terribly technical -- it's well written and easy to read -- the book is a bit abstract, in the sense that it's trying to describe the general properties of lighting as used for photography. For some readers and photographers, the abstract or theoretical approach may not be congenial. The book has very little (almost nothing) to say about equipment, for example. In the section on portrait lighting, the emphasis is simply on what happens when lighting is placed in different positions -- not on which form of lighting is best.
But I personally found the book's approach exhilarating. I've read so many photography books it's hard for me to single out one as THE most informative and THE most helpful to me as a photographer, but if I had to do so, this book might be my pick.
Learn What You Already Know, but Don't Know!.......2007-10-02
I sort of learned nothing from this book, but also learned EVERYTHING.
This book takes what I see everyday, but don't think about, then turns it into thought. I've always known that light reflects from things in three different ways, but that knowledge has sat unconsciously in my lower brain. My higher brain, which does shutter speed, depth of field, and f/stops, was oblivious. The book brings your two brains together!
Best Lighting Book I've Read.......2007-09-30
As a professional photographer and instructor, I've perused many books on photographic lighting, portrait lighting, etc. I say "perused" because most are complicated in the way they present their information, or, present examples that -while technically sound- are totally impractical for everyday use. So much so that I rarely buy them. This is understandable, as professional lighting is the single most difficult aspect of photography to grasp, let alone master. So explaining it isn't always easy, either.
This book -while it does use a bit of technical language- approaches each example in a very straightforward way, explaining when and where each technique is useful, how to perform each technique and even the troubles you're likely to encounter when you first attempt them. In short it's like someone is sitting there with you leading you through the logic of how the lighting works, and helping you to look out for the pitfalls. And while it's not that thick of a book, it is *dense* with information. There is much to absorb and learn, and frankly I've seen no other book that comes close in terms of making it a pleasure to learn.
This book will be a required text for any university classes I teach in the future.
The distiction between humans and apes.......2007-09-29
On the first day of his Physics 45 (i.e., photography) class, Ross Scroggs put a "rock" on his lecture table and told his students that this was an ax, one of the first human tools. He also told them that art, demonstrated in cave paintings, evolved simultaneously with tools. "I do not need to teach you art," he said, "because, if you are human, you will produce art as soon as you have the tools. I intend to give you the tools. I will not mind wasting my time with the overwhelming majority of apes in this class, because the handful of humans here will certainly listen to me and that makes it worth my time."
This book was originally developed by two students from the University where Scroggs taught, and he's the prominent dedicatee of the book. It's not my place to say they have delivered his promise, but read the other reviews of this book, written almost entirely by people who never knew Ross Scroggs, and look at the similarity between their descriptions of the book and Scroggs' promises.
Excellent title for learning lighting.......2007-09-27
This is a book that will teach you about light and how to apply it. It isn't meant for you to copy a setup to get similar results. It is an outstanding book that tells you why you put the lights in a particular position and why it works in one instance, but not another.
IMHO this is a easy to follow fun to read college course on lighting. If you are looking to improve your craft this is a must read. This is also a book in the reference library of the Certified Professional Photographers association and helps in preparing for their exam.

Master Lighting Guide for Portrait Photographers

Truely an excellent introduction to lighting........1999-08-22
Light Science & Magic is an excellent introduction to photograpic lighting. The book covers the use of light, shadow, and exposure to aid the photographer in developing images that convey his or her vision of the subject. It also provides a good discription of lighting equipment.
Puts principles of photographic studio lighting into focus........1997-11-23
Studio lighting 101 might best describe a book which explains principles and properties of light as well as its actual applications in studio situations. Do you wonder how to get rid of reflections or shadows in photos? Once you understand the science of why those shadows exist, you have the mental tools needed to become the creator of your photo images instead of a flash slave.
This book pulled together what I knew and filled the gaps.......1996-07-04
I've been photographing informally, or at least without training,
for about 30 years now. In that time I've done a lot of portrait
work, and learned a thing or two about lighting. A friend gave
me this book, and it's been EXTREMELY useful in pulling together
all the things I knew and showing me how they relate to each other,
and filling in the gaps.
I hadn't really thought about *textbooks*
for photography before -- as I said, I haven't had any formal training
in the field. The books I see in bookstores are too elementary and
too unfocused for me; and I don't see tham as good for a beginner
starting out, either. But finding some real textbooks that go into
depth about particular parts of the field is an eye-opener for me.
My photos are better for it -- especially studio portraits and
the still-lifes I did for a wine book last year (Terry Garey, _The Joy
of Home Winemaking_, AVON). See other photos at http://www.ddb.com/photo.

Book Description
First published in 1932, this book is perhaps the earliest work by an American scholar on a Chinese woman intellectual. Nancy Lee Swann presents a sketch of the Eastern Han period when Pan lived and wrote, of her family background, and of the literary milieu of which she was a part. In addition, Swann provides translations of writings definitively identified with Pan that survive from the years when she was active (ca. 89--105 a.d.).
While Pan is well known for her contribution to the great Han-shu, of special interest is her treatise on the moral training of women, in which she makes a plea for girls to be given the same education as boys and points to principles that led young women to success in ancient China. Swann also includes memorials, short poems, and an essay, all of which demonstrate Pan's rhetorical skills and her concerns at the Han court.
A considerable work of scholarship, Pan Chao is grounded in Swann's detailed knowledge of the history and literature of the late Han and it includes the Chinese for shorter works and a comprehensive list of primary sources on this important early scholar.
