Book Description
A photographic guide to 200 wildflower species from the Central Valley near Sacramento, west up to the peaks of the Sierra Nevada mountains. Each species has at least one photograph, a description and notes on its distribution, native and modern uses and similar species.

Laird R. Blackwell's "Wildflowers of the Sierra Nevada and the Central Valley" (1999) is an excellent field guide to the area. The "Quick Key" organizes 357 thumbnails of flowers by elevation for quick reference, and the bulk of the guide is organized by family. Descriptions are adequate. The photos, overall, are good.
Not a book for serious naturalists.......2004-03-14
The book is well organized and has the appearance of being handy, but is seriously incomplete. I'm a botanist, with research in the Sierra, and have tried several different resources in the field. Many plant species, common throughout the Sierra, have no mention in the book. If you happen across a plant that is covered by the book, the information is usually good, but what good is the book if most plants are not covered? Many photo-based field guides exclude the vast majority of species, because it's too costly and unfeasible to publish a book that thorough. However, a photo-based field guide should at least include all the most common species, which is where I believe this book falls short.
A beautifully illustrated and easy to use guide.......1999-08-30
Although I own and use many wildflower identification books, most are lacking in some respect...organization, quality of photographs, etc. I stumbled across this book at a State Park ranger station shop, and was immediately impressed with the excellent quality photographs and the organization of information. The introduction contains much valuable data about elevational zones and where to find the flowers. There's a Quick Key of tiny photographs to steer you to the plant family and page number where you'll find the flower in question. I'm recommending this guide to all my friends.
Book Description

Great for Insight, OK for Travel.......2007-03-20
This book is something you'd want to read before going to Sweden, rather than lugging it along with you. However, it did have the best map of Stockholm in it of all of our travel books. You can usually pick up a decent map for free, though, when you get there in the back of the booklet that comes with a Stockholm Card.
The information in the book is great for getting more familiar with Sweden and Swedes, but not being a native-born Swede, I can vouch for its accuracy. It seemed pretty good to me, though.
Insight Guide is usu great, this one is almost great!.......2001-06-21
This book is great for a good overview of the entire country--the history, the people, the food, the main attractions. It explains about the different parts of the country. Some of the pictures are just sterotypical Sweden--Sweden is much more diverse then people realize. They have immigrants from many countries. Scandinavia is a beautiful place. The museum details are not up to date, but this is hard because they change often and can be closed for various reasons. Be sure to do research before you go there if you have specific places you want to see. Otherwise just head over and wander the streets and you will find great stuff. This is more of a book to read before you go rather then to carry around with you while you are there. The Iceland Insight Guide is great. As a side note: I lived in Stockholm, Sweden for one year working. I visited all of the Scandinavian countries and Finland while I was there.

Being Swedish, it is always fun to read how other see Sweden and Swedes'. It is a great book that is more in depth on real life and how people are. You will feel that you know the people more after you have read the book. This whole series of Insight guide are great books for anyone travelling for real or if you want to travel by reading a book. You will not be disappointed with this book.

Insight's City Guides combine stunning photography with literate text and a smattering of basic travel information. Even though this book is about 11 years old, I continually refer to it as a visual aid for graphic design. It's appeal is timeless and the layout and photographs showing Igarashi's collection of greeting cards are excellent. What I would like to see is a short description of materials used or method of design and printing. So when is your next book with updated collection of greeting cards going to be published, Mr. Igarashi???

Gooooooood book! Good book!!.......2004-02-20
As a volunteer at our local Humane Society, I've wanted so bad to help with the cats that are unadoptable. Behavior is the greatest challenge and obstical that cats must prove themselves capable of to reach the goal of somebody to love them. I really want to move into this department to do all I can to ensure all the cats possible get the chance to go home. This book is one great start!! It's very technical however. And I find alot of words (usually anatomical) that I must reference to fully understand. But hey, that's called learning!!!!!!!!!
