Wildflower photos sets new standard for genre.......1999-09-13
Adams and Casstevens combine top-notch botanical briefs for each of the featured species with superb photographs. The botanical data is sufficient for appropriate identification and interesting notes about the plants are plentiful. The authors are commended for recognizing the importance of the composition of the photographs. They are not only useful for identification purposes, they are each masterpieces of photographic art. Adams teaches how to create similar photographs. Clearly this book was not just thrown together, but was carefully crafted by geniuses.

British Rail Guide.......2007-01-12
This is a great guide that my family has utilized (previous editions)
on two vacations to London to plan day rail trips to Cambridge, Hampton Court, Greenwich, Windsor and Portsmouth. Gives rail information along
with sightseeing information on about 30-40 cities in the UK. Also, gives
guidance on rail passes and train schedules/timetable. Keep in mind in London there are eight stations which service various outlying towns/cities ( versus two in Manhattan )- the book has alot of good information on the logistics of the London rail system that fans out across Britain.
It also covers Scotland and Wales.
train travel in Britain.......2006-07-05
This book covers rail and ferry connections. There is a detailed map of the rail system in Great Britain, making it very easy for me to plan rail travel to different cities in Great Britain (England, Scotland, Wales). The ferry routes from Great Britain to Ireland and the islands of Scotland are also shown. The book describes many cities with points of interest, restaurants, market places, and general information. The different kinds of Britrail passes are described with schedules for connecting ferries and trains. The are sample rail fares between cities, and an Appendix which lists things like public holidays, passport information, and connections to Eurail. The book starts with arriving in Great Britain, what to expect, how to connect from airports to train systems. I plan to take this book with me on my trip in the fall. This is my first trip and I picked a great book to use!

Book Description
Seven dramatic accounts of ancient and modern tyrants.
History is full of evil rulers who rose to power despite the widespread suffering they caused. Though they ruled in different countries and often at different times, their behavior and actions have been frighteningly similar. How did they get away with it?
Evil Masters reveals the typical characteristics of a tyrant and then profiles seven tyrannical rulers from the past 3,000 years. The rise to power of each ruler reveals a familiar web of manipulation, fear-mongering, and deceit to get and stay on top.
Ancient China saw the rise of Qin Shi Huang-ti, who gained control and glory by melting the weapons of the peasants to make statues of himself. He also suppressed the teachings of Confucius and burned libraries.
More than 2,000 years later, book burnings became a favorite tactic of Adolf Hitler in Nazi Germany. Hitler would further promote only his ideas through widespread propaganda, a practice echoed by Josef Stalin in Russia, whose tightly controlled newspaper claimed to be Pravda -- "the truth." Stalin held power through an army of secret police who enforced his will. Similar underground thugs were crucial to Saddam Hussein's rise to power.
Dramatic storytelling loaded with information, archival images, and thought-provoking accounts offer a revealing look at some of history's most evil rulers. Featured tyrants include:
- Saddam Hussein, 1937-
- Adolf Hitler, 1889-1945
- Josef Stalin, 1879-1953
- Maximilien Robespierre, 1758-1794
- Ivan the Terrible, 1530-1584
- Nero, 37-69 AD
- Qin Shi Huang-ti, ca. 259-210 BC
Evil Masters is a chilling introduction to the catastrophic consequences of absolute power.

This seller will have my $ again if they say they have the product. Fast service and clean book. Arrived as described!
One of the foundation books in my library.......2005-11-11
When I was first learning to ride I found this book totally inspirational. Here was someone, finally, who could explain what you were meant to do to stay securely in the saddle. Heather discusses the common but totally unhelpful advice given by instructors to novices such as; 'sit deep' or 'lean back' . For the bemused novice it is such a relief to find that you aren't a total dimwit!
The photos are clear and I appreciated that she used 'ordinary' riders so that you could look at common faults and how they corrected them.
The initial text on Heathers own brand of saddle, seat savers and the use of the Pelham was interesting but went on for too long. The 'sales pitch' for her saddles and seat saver wasn't really appropriate in an instructional book. For those not able (or wanting) to buy additional gear these sections added little or no value to the book.
There were also some unexplained personal reveries in the book that made it a little 'me me me', and she often went off on tangents in order to leacture on how bad other trainers were or to talk about personal experiences with 'abuse' (that she apparently did nothing about) but overall this is a good book. I still refer back to it from time to time and it is usually greatly appreciated whenever I lend it out to fellow riders.
And I am PICKY!!.......2005-03-21
This is THEE best book I have ever read. I have never read and applied so many techniques from one book that have actually worked. I am absolutely positive that you will find no other book that comes close to this.
This book is amazing! I HIGHLY recommend it to anyone who.........2004-03-03
I HIGHLY recommend this book to anyone who rides. Young, old, learning or advanced. This book has LOTS of great techniques, and ideas. I really liked this book because the approaches used are soft on the horse, and easy for the rider to execute. Two pieces of information I got from this book, that will always stick in my mind, are: 1. When buying or picking a saddle to ride in, look at the placement of the stirrup bars. If the bar is placed really close to the front of the saddle, your leg will be pulled forward, and therefore out of the Classical position and infront of your centre of balance. So choose a saddle that puts you in the "correct position so you are not fighting the very tool that is meant to assist you". 2. When riding in a circle or turning a corner, DO NOT turn your shoulders to the inside as suggested by almost ALL coaches!! It forces your weight to your outside and makes that leg stiff. Horses want, by nature, to keep us centred in the saddle, as it is uncomfortable for them to carry us if we are hanging off the side of the saddle. Horses will try to step under us to keep us balanced, and will therefore drift to the outside if you turn your shoulders in because your weight will be shifted the outside, and you will not be able to lighten and move the outside leg back to support the horses motion on the outside. Anyway, READ THE BOOK!! It is wonderful. You will learn a lot even if you are an Olympic rider, you will learn something!!!!! The soft approaches allow your horse to move freely. GOOD LUCK everyone with your horses!!! :)
The best book I have read.......2003-02-07
This would have to be the best book that I have read. It is makes perfect sense and gives clear and logical instructions on aids.
Not to mention that there is support websites ...for those who want to ask questions. No other author I know is willing to give that support.
I would definately recommend this training book over any others.

Book Description
Over a 7-year period, Tony and Eva Worobiec, two of the greatest photographers of all time, traveled the dusty paths of rural America, particularly in the Dakotas, Montana, and Wyoming. The fruits of their journey are pictures so poignant and evocative of the American West that they are the photographic equivalent of a Steinbeck novel. Each amazing photo vividly reveals the struggle for survival, of a disappearing way of life, in the forgotten countryside and backroads of the U.S. In the often harsh and unforgiving landscape, the Worobiecs shot affecting and beautiful pictures of abandoned farms, schools, gas stations, grain elevators and tractors, diners, and trucks.
Tony's pictures are large format, shot in black and white, and then hand tinted. The results resemble postcards from the 1950s. Eva shoots directly in color for a more starkly modern aspect. Both achieve magnificent, and ultimately emotionally touching, results.
Along with the photographs are the words of the remaining residents, who speak sadly of better times, the friends and neighbors for whom things didn't work out, and of their own, once-flourishing piece of abandoned America.
This remarkable achievement is both an exquisite photography book and a commentary on the American way of life.
Customer Reviews:
If this book appeals to you.....BUY IT!!!.......2007-05-20
This book is nicely made, of excellent 'physical' quality and full of fantastic images. If you are looking for images with the depth and gravitas' of the Westons or Ansel Adams look elsewhere, but as a lighter form of visual interest the images do not disappoint. I have not gotten around to reading the extensive text, but it too looks well thought out and intriguing. Yes there are a lot of photographs depicting cars and some are arguably 'samey' but there are LOTS of images full stop. A fantastic (large) inspiring book that will be treasured not only by monochrome photographers but the curious adveturer type possibly considering a similar project. It certainly resonated with me. The ideal browse when I am tired of 'intense' photography and need something more casual and thinking about going 'walkabout'.
Abandoned but thankfully not forgotten........2003-12-31
Fortunately for a lot of photographers abandoned man-made America seems to be just about everywhere and what a visual treat it produces. This handsome, large (check out the dimensions in the Product Details above) book of photos is a cut above the usual offering though. Rather than shoot the predictable broken and rusty commercialism everywhere the Worobiec's had the great idea of capturing one particular area of the Nation, the northwest. Here the railroads were the catalyst to opening up the landscape with towns created about every ten miles or so to service track and train. Predictably many of these settlements lacked natural resources and decent farmland so it was inevitable that the weather, depression, and technical advances in transport made so many of these towns uneconomic and many folk just left.
What I find amazing is the nature of the leaving. Many photos show inside abandoned houses still with kitchen units, phones, furniture and personal effects. Page sixty-five shows a wall calendar for July 1959 in a house in Wildrose, Nebraska and as the caption explains these were useful indicators to reveal the date of the owner's departure. Sometimes the Worobiec's found small schools abandoned, as the photo on page 117 shows, the floor awash with textbooks. As expected there are many photos of abandoned vehicles (possibly thirty-six was just a bit too many) surrounded by vegetation, rich pickings nowadays for collectors, I bet.
Another reason why I like this book is because 'Ghosts in the Wilderness' is not just a collection of photos but a travelogue as well, six chapters have lively and interesting essays about the social and economic aspects of the area. These words give more meaning to the poignancy of the images.
The printing and design is excellent, the photos are mostly one to a page with generous white, black and light grey backgrounds. I do have a criticism of the production though, the last five pages show all the photos as thumbnails with the relevant technical details, all this information could easily have been accommodated on the page with the photo and so avoid having to keep turning to the back.
I think the Worobiec's have done a wonderful job producing a book of regional photography. Oh yes, thank you Mark and Sarah who gave me this lovely book as a Christmas present.

A Memoir by China's Foremost Journalist.
Customer Reviews:
A must have if you are interested in contemporary China.......2005-02-13
At first glance, you could mistake this work as just another in the growing "I survived the Cultural Revolution" genre of books. However, while this does address Liu's treatment during the Cultural Revolution, it goes far beyond typical books of the genre.
In the words of the late-Arthur Miller, "But it is not quite the now-familiar tale of tortures and endless persecution, for there is a powerful stylistic directness, a wealth of detailed observation, and the passionate humanity of a witness and victim of the most surrealistic tyranny of this or any other age." This sentence is the most apt description, and it isn't surprising that it came from someone once persecuted due to perceived political views half-a-century ago.
This is a powerful read. Liu Binyan joined the Communist Party during the anti-Japanese War in the 1940s. His goal was idealistic, borne out of an undying love and patriotism for his country. Sadly, the leaders of the Communist Party didn't have the same idealistic visions held by Liu. Liu was constantly persecuted for trying to help the Party and thus the country. Liu displays a passion for the common people of China that the Party cadres could have learned well from, but by in large would refuse to do.
This is very readable and compelling. As a journalist himself, Liu has presented a compelling tale of the true situation during his life in China. The fact that this is a translation from the original Chinese does little to detract from the attractiveness of the narrative.
Of interest to this China watcher was the use of time-worn phrases that the Chinese Communists use in the media, all of which within China is under their control. While the phrases have changed to some extent, the media in China still uses such phrases to this day.
While this work is a bit dated in that it was published in 1990, many of the methods used by the media and the control of that media by the Chinese Communists hasn't changed significantly since the time this book was published.
This book is a must read if you are interested in contemporary China, or if you are interested in the general topic of the human struggle for improvement and, most of all, liberty.
An excellent piece of Literature.......2000-06-16
Absolutely absorbing! Liu Binyan is showing why he is seen as China's most influential investigative reporter. The book reads like a novel. It takes the reader inside the soul of the ordinary Chinese people. Page after page is filled with images of tremendous dignity and courage in the face of a strangulating system. Characters come alive like the young woman, Zhang Zhixin, who realized that Mao's policies had failed and said so. For this she was condemmed to death by firing squad. But in order to prevent her from having the last word the State cut her larynx. Curt Vonnegut's answer to what it is in the German character that allowed such atrocities to happen in WW2 echoes repeatedly "obedience". Obeying laws that are not in the common good. The spirit of the Chinese people rises high above and will not be quieted by violence. "We will all repent in this generation not only for the hateful words and deeds of the bad people but for the appalling silence of the good people." Martin Luther King
