A slim, accessible and enjoyable introduction to Amazonian botany, ideal for the non-specialist. Contains over 240 colour photos; a handy species list featuring English, Spanish and Latin names; and much fascinating data about the uses to which these plants have been put. Guaranteed to put a friendly face to that mass of plantlife that you see all around you on any trip to the neotropics of Latin America.

An essential ethnobotanical tour de force........1998-11-29

A Field Guide to Medicinal and Useful Plants of the Upper Amazon is destined to be a classic. I have read dozens of books and hundreds of papers about the Amazonian flora, and yet, this is the first that combines quality color photographs with accurate botanical text, and ethnobotanical lore in one package. If this small, but valuable tome had only been available for my ethnobotanical field expedition with the Machiguenga in 1995, I suspect that I could have accomplished a great deal more. The same would be true for any scientist, eco-tourist or armchair naturalist who anticipates an Amazonian excursion, even if only a cerebral journey. This book deserves to be widely read and shared. It illustrates the hidden wealth of medicinal plants and the value of biodiversity to our future survival on this planet. This knowledge is essential, and the indigenous people who possess it are vitally endangered. I hope that this book will be translated into Spanish, Portugese, French and Dutch, so that the post-colonial settlers of Amazonia will also come to value and understand the botanical and therapeutic riches of their rainforests.

Great guide for the visitor, fascinating reading for anyone.......1998-11-20

This is the most helpful guide for me, a frequent visitor. Clear photographs, interesting descriptions, fascinating snippets of rainforest lore and well-researched information on local uses of each plant make for a good read for anyone who is interested in plants and rainforest.

"We thought we'd break those chains at last," sang the slaves, hoping such spirituals would sustain them until the Confederacy surrendered and slavery was gone forever. During the Civil War, blacks served in the Union army and navy (although some fought for the South) and in Union-controlled camps, which harbored fleeing slaves. Not all slaves escaped, but even those who remained with their masters began to imagine a new life. After the war, amendments to the Constitution abolished slavery, granted citizenship to freed people, and gave African-American men the right to vote. Freedom, blacks hoped, would also mean political equality and economic well-being. Some moved from rural areas to cities in the South or North; others looked to the West, where many African-American men became farmers or found work as cattle-drive cooks and cowboys. But many whites viewed freedom for African Americans as a threat, and they responded by establishing white supremacy organizations such as the Ku Klux Klan. Organized violence against blacks, along with poor agricultural conditions, discrimination, and worsening economic times, guaranteed poverty for most Southern blacks. Although the tightly knit slave communities on the larger plantations began to disperse, a sense of having shared interests and goals actually widened freed people's vision of the meaning of community. Despite fierce white opposition, African Americans established their own churches, schools, and other associations and began to participate actively in government. Break Those Chains at Last tells the story of these turbulent and complicated years, as African Americans created the communities and organizations that survive to this day.

This is anawesome book. I like the part about the moonlight gourami. I also like the part about the siamese fighting fish.

You could write much more extensive book about gouramies and bettas easily. I would have wanted to see much more pictures and more specific information about species. This book isn't bad but it could be much better too.

Not enough.......2003-08-06

It is concise which is fine and in the beginning has general information that applies not only to Gouramies. Then it describes the various species but there is not enough data about the behavior of each of the species and also not enough information on how to breed.

Beautiful book, needs a better editor.......2006-02-15

I'm reading this book now and plan to refer back to it often. It is quite beautiful and laid out like my art history books from college.

The content is fascinating, tracking the history of garden and park design along with the social, artistic and political movements that influenced it. But I continue to be distracted by the ridiculously long run-on sentences, interrupted by unnecessary parenthetical explanations. The book could have used an editor whose goal was to make this a reader-friendly volume. After all, not all of us are only interested in the photos and illustrations!
