Unusable .......2007-06-03
I ordered this book in preparation for my own trip to Colorado & Wyoming because I love my Peterson's Guide for Wildflowers for the Eastern US. This was a horrible disappointment. The flowers are organized by botanical families and species, instead of the usual organization by color and appearance. The key in the back is supposed to be organized by pairs of questions, but the numbering system is confusing beyond use and whoever put it together apparently doesn't know how to indent. I hope to prevent someone else from wasting their money on this book.
A botanical travelling companion.......2007-03-18
The photography is excellent. The line drawings are even more detailed. The descriptions are very useful. The interesting facts are often fascinating. I expect to field test this guide in July when I visit Alaska and British Columbia this summer. That will be the real test.

Great.......2007-08-29
I did a trip to the Pyrenees a year ago (hiking and traveling) , and this book helped me a lot (both in and out of the hikes).
Very useful, informative & accurate and quite essential to my opinion.
I used it together with Trekking in the Pyrenees, 3rd: France & Spain Trekking Guides (Trailblazer)
and I find them both to complete each other.
I just saw that it has a new 6th edition, so maybe that's a bit better, but never the less I highly recommend on it.

Marc Dubins rough guide is a detailed and interesting book. He concentrates on the areas close to the mountains and gives interesting descriptions of small villages as well as larger resorts and towns. He includes recommended walks and rates the ski resorts. He assumes you will be walking or on public transport and so does not cover many hamlets and villages only reachable by car. Overall a very thorough book that I am sure will be invaluble on our trip there.

Warm, engaging and written from the heart........2006-10-20
In "Pets Have Feelings Too!" long-time animal communicator Monica Diedrich follows up her previous award-winning title with an in-depth but highly readable look at how our fellow creatures interact with us on physical, emotional, and spiritual levels. Diedrich covers the usual territory of basic aspects of communication (the how-to's, behavioral problems, lost pets) but really shines when discussing how our deep connections to the animals in our lives can lead to profound physical, emotional, and spiritual healing for humans and animals alike. In addition, her theory of energy imprinting carries after-death experiences and a beloved animal's return into newly explored pathways. In spite, or perhaps because of, the ongoing cultural, economic, and political uniformization of the world, relativism has risen to the top of the agenda of philosophy and other disciplines. To what extent does cultural diversity affect the activity and the products of philosophizing and of social science? Can there be convergence of worldviews and conceptual frameworks across cultural boundaries? Can there be mutual understanding across them in spite of diversity? These and other questions prompted by the recent upsurge of relativism are tackled in original essays by philosophers and social scientists. The special focus and interest of the book lies in its attempt to confront North and Latin American perspectives on these issues. The four parts of the book (Relativism: transformation or death? A glimpse of variety: Philosophical experiences and worldviews in Latin America; Nature, Culture and Art; and Crossing conceptual frameworks) discuss different, though intertwined, aspects of the challenge of relativism.

Liu Shaoqi could have been the hope for China.......1999-01-29
If China had adopted Liu's policies, it would have became a much stronger nation than it is today. Subsequently the Chinese people could have had a much better life than what they have today.

Lowell Dittmer was also my professor. The only thing saving his dense lectures is the fact that he actually gets some information out. The book is strikingly similar because of Dittmer's convoluted sentences, overused abbreviations, and lack of real flow... Despite this, the text covers a great deal of information for those intensely interested in this area of study. If you can get through the book, you might learn a lot. And no, I'm not bitter, I got a good grade in the class :)

Fine study of Liu Shaoqi and his fall........2000-03-28
In this book, Lowell Dittmer illuminates how Liu's beliefs on Communism differed from Mao's, and how radical Mao was.
Secondly, he explains the process of mass criticism in Cultural Revolution China, and moves towards a theory of mass criticism.
This book is very good. However, it has a few flaws. Dittmer isn't an extremely good writer, though he makes his points clearly. Also, he creates graphs of the frequency of mass criticism from which very little can be read, and then proceeds to draw odd conclusions from them. He also makes pointless diagrams, the content of which is rather obvious, and then develops strange terminology out of them, such as assigning people letters based on their function in mass criticism. Despite these idiosyncracies, this is a fine book.
