Product Description
8 1/2 x 11 format - Sprial Bound to lay flat. Originally call West Virginia Medicinal Plants, Trees, & shrubs, but since these plants are found throughout Appalachia I changed the name to Medicinal Plants, Trees, & Shrubs of Appalachia. This book has 107 plants with descriptions, color photos of each plant, and a space on the back to record your own notes. It tells when the plant flowers, what part is medicinal, when to gather it and how to use it. It describes each plants medicinal properties and what that property means, as well as a section on weights and measures, and dosages, plant parts, different types of preparations, a flowering calendar and a gathering calendar.
Book Description
While France is known for the romantic grandeur of Paris, beautiful chateaus, lush vineyards and gourmet cuisine, it also offers an exceptional opportunity for those seeking more meaningful travel experiences at its many inspiring spiritual shrines. The Pilgrim's France leads the spiritual adventurer from Normandy to the Pyrenees, from Mont-St-Michel to the Riviera, and from Brittany to the Alps, inviting the pilgrim to encounter the deep blessings of many sacred places.
This unique guidebook explores seven shrines of the Virgin Mary and more than thirty saints, providing fascinating biographies of these revered souls. Stories of well-known historical figures such as St. Joan of Arc come to life, as well as St. Catherine Labouré, the saint of silence, responsible for the miraculous medal. For those seeking spiritual serenity and inspiration with a Gallic flavor, this book will serve as a faithful companion to experience the heart and soul of France.
Features include:
Inspiring biographies of the saints
Location of hidden rooms with saints' relics
Instruction on how to meditate with the saints
How to find quiet areas for meditation and prayer
Useful maps and directions
Helpful references for lodging in monasteries
"The saints' presence is very much alive, today, at these shrines. James and Colleen Heater show us how truly to receive the saints' blessings, by experiencing for ourselves their living presence." -- J. Donald Walters, author of Meditation for Starters
Customer Reviews:
France for the Faithful.......2007-02-06
France is not just for fashion, perfume, cuisine, romantic escapades, and wine ... it is also a country where Catholics go to visit Lourdes and other sacred sites from lives of French saints. If you plan to make a trip to France both a cultural and spiritual jouney ... The Pilgrim's France should join your Fodor before you go.
There are great travel books - this one zooms past those!.......2006-11-04
James and Collen Heater have written a wonderful series of travel books for those of us seeking a more spiritual journey - or a spiritual quest of sorts. In the true sense of the word "pilgram" this book provides a "traveler" all they need to find the sacred places in France. To go where the saints and sages lived and walked. To meditate and pray in those holy places that are hundreds of years old. To feel that divine energy in those very special places - this is what the book is all about.
If you are going to europe anytime in the futre - take along not only this book but all of their books in the "Pilgrim" series of travel books. It will be the best thing you can pack for the trip.
This book is worth of your purchase! It will be money well spent - in will be "good karma"!
I personally recommend this book for all travlers to Europe and for those arm-chair adventures to dream along with the book. I would rank it higher than FIVE STARS - IF I COULD DO SO.
Penny wise and pound foolish.......2005-01-11
To book a pilgrimage to France and not pay the additional dollars for a copy of the Heaters' The Pilgrim's France is penny wise and pound foolish. I should know, because unfortunately, that is what I did last October.
At a get-acquainted meeting prior to the trip, one of my fellow pilgrims announced that she had come upon the book at a local bookstore. Some people in the group then bought it, too, but I thought I'd save money by ordering it from the library.
The library's copy was already on loan, so I left for the trip with plenty of secular guides to France, but not The Pilgrim's Guide. At times on the tour bus I read from other people's books, but that does not compare to having one's own book when visiting a sacred place. Our tour guides filled us in on generalities, but that was not to the detailed level that this book does. (Yet the reading is enjoyable as well as intensely informative.)
Being on a tour, we did not need to know about accommodations or travel directions, but it was all there, along with very, very interesting commentary on the lives of each saint and what to see at each shrine. I can not begin to imagine how long it took the Heaters to compile all the data.
Shortly after I returned home, I was able to take out the library's copy of The Pilgrim's France. I renewed it as many times as I could because it was a useful reference as I finished writing in my trip journal.
Reading it was also distressing to me, however, because I realized things I'd missed that I wouldn't have missed if I'd had a copy of the book with me on the trip. Then and there I decided to buy both The Pilgrim's France and the Heaters' other book, The Pilgrim's Italy.
I had a fantastic pilgrimage experience, but it could have been even more fantastic if I'd owned this book. Whether you are an actual pilgrim or an arm-chair pilgrim, I highly recommend it.
I found this book hard to put down.......2004-07-21
I found this book hard to put down. I have previously read the Heaters' Pilgrimage book on Italy and found it extremely useful and informative for a trip I took to Italy this year. When I heard that they published a second book, I snatched it up immediately, despite the fact that I had no intensions of traveling to Europe again in the near future. This book presents the lives of the saints in such a dynamic way that you are drawn in and before you know it, you cannot put the book down. It is packed full of helpful and practical information on each area of France, and cities of pilgrimage, as well as how to make the most of your stay. I found the extensive resources on learning more about the saints and places mentioned in the book a wonderful addition. I would highly recommend this book not only to those interested in taking a pilgrimage, but also anyone wanting to read about real people who have lead inspiring and uplifting lives. After reading this book, you cannot help feeling uplifted yourself!

Customer Reviews:
Excellent Choice!.......2001-08-20
Being an avid reader of dog books, and a Whippet fancier, I was excited to hear that this book was coming out. I bought it at the first opportunity! It is of special interest to those who are in the UK or who wish to use UK bloodlines in other parts of the world. However, there are excellent chapters on the breed in other lands. Also, the care information is practical and useful to new puppy owners and more experienced owners alike. The book is full of gorgeous photos and is written in an enjoyable to read style.

Good book, maybe more for established owners.......2003-09-16
I have this book also, i have possibly an older version, focused a bit more on the Engllish side of the whippet breed.
It is more focused on breeding, showmanship etc..
It also has recipes for the home-cooker, where you don't feed from the can ( for example there are recipes etc.. )
It IS a good book and interesting, but it should be a book after you have a whippet, or for light reading, not if you want to read up before purchasing.

Whippets Today - for the expert only.......2000-08-05
First a disclaimer: I haven't had a dog in over thirty years. So adopting a whippet was daunting. I wanted a book that told me how to take care of this new creature in my life - how much food and exercise she needs, the kinds of toys and games whippets tend to enjoy, etc. What I got instead was a book that described the various international standards by which whippets are judged in the show ring, and a great deal of detail on champions, their bloodlines, breeders and kennels. This is fine for those interested in breeding or showing, but wholly inadequate and superfluous to the besotted albeit novice whippet owner!

Book Description
Elegant and affectionate, the Whippet rose from his humble beginnings as the "poor man's greyhound" to become an agile professional race dog and a highly prized companion and show dog. Today the breed enjoys great popularity around the world. The Whippet is hailed among the fastest of all sighthounds, though he is fairly small compared to the Greyhound. For the right active family, the Whippet makes an adaptable and fun-loving pet, as swift of mind as he is of foot.
The book outlines the breed's origins in England and its arrival in the US. The author discusses the breed's characteristics and standard and provides her excellent advice about selecting a well-bred puppy, rearing, socializing, house-training and obedience training. This colorful and fully up-to-date guide also offers guidance on feeding, exercise, home safety, grooming and other topics vital to the ownership of a Whippet.

Great Guide for Whippets.......2007-07-22
Picked up our Whippet puppy yesterday and this is a great guide for most of the things we need to know to take care of him. Excellent read, great photos.
An excellent book for Whippet enthusiasts.......2005-10-14
"Whippet" by Juliette Cunliffe is a wonderful book. It goes into great detail about history, owning, training, puppies, and care. Very comprehensive. What I love most about it is the visual appeal. It's a hard back, and the photographs within it are gorgeous - all color, with some really stunning Whippets. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to know more about Whippets, and enjoys looking at photos of this amazing breed!

Related to the English Greyhound, Whippets are often bred as racing dogs. Customer Reviews:
A wonderful Whippet book.......2005-10-14
I have found this book to be an excellent source for Whippet enthusiasts. It is quite comprehensive, has some stunning photography, and deals with pretty much every facet of owning one of these wonderful animals. It gave me a great deal of insight into Whippets in general. Highly recommend it!
Helped me buy my baby!!!!.......2004-09-10
i love this book. by reading it, i chose to get a whippet as my next dog. i already have a golden retriever, but she's really my mom's dog and i wanted one of my own to take to new york city when i go to college. as luck would have it, my cousin, raymond, who is one of the top whippet breeders in the country, called me and told me he had two little puppies who needed homes. my mom, my brother, my brother's friend, and i all went to his house one weekend and came home with an eight week old puppy. i named him elton, and he's sitting in my lap right now as a twelve week old adolescent. thank you so much, to the wonderful authors, for helping me choose my next breed of dog!
Excellent Primer for Would Be Whippet Owners.......2003-10-04
While the book is fairly concise, it is a very thorough handbook for owning a Whippet. I have referenced it many times in the few months since owning a Whippet puppy and each time it has something valuable to say. I highly suggest owning this book.
Valuable information.......2003-01-02
Great book - comprehensive guide for whippet owners. Useful information for those primarily interested as a pet owner rather than those looking for specialised advice on breeding, showing etc. Highly recommended. Should be mandatory reading for all prospective/new whippet owners. The information is detailed yet highly readable. The writing is of an excellent standard making it a pleasure to read.
Good basic info.......2002-08-31
I bought this book after adopting our whippet pup. It is a good overview of the basics for this breed. It is focused on health and happiness of your pet and basic care, entertainment, raising, training, and health/first aid of your pup. It's a good book to have for reference for those of us who "just like the breed" (probably not specific enough for breeders/showers).

Customer Reviews:
Where's the Whippet?.......2004-10-17
I'm a big Wallace and Gromit fan, and a Whippet fancier so I thought I'd love this book. Though it was a cute story, I'm afraid the Whippet in the story did not look ANYTHING like a real Whippet, I don't know what they were were thinking of- they could have made some effort to reproduce a realistic Whippet. The Whippet club was listing this book in their "books on Whippets" section- Whippet fanciers who buy this book because they think they are going to see a Whippet are going to be very disappointed. Fun story, so I'll give it 4 stars for being entertaining, but the Whippet looked kind of like a Dachshund with long legs! Awful! I think they could have tried a little harder.

Book Description
Originally published in 1904 this extremely scarce early work on the Whippet is both expensive and hard to find in this edition. VINTAGE DOG BOOKS have republished it, using the original text and illustrations as part of their CLASSIC BREED BOOKS series. Freeman Lloyd was an expert on dogs and wrote several books on various breeds. This book on the whippet was his best, and is much sought after by true "whippeters." As a respected member of the National Whippet-Racing Club, he wrote from his wealth of experience of this wonderful little racing/hunting dog. The book consists of over a hundred pages divided into sixteen detailed chapters and is illustrated with vintage photos of typical dogs and diagrams of tracks, including an additional gallery of photos at the rear. Contents Include: Make, Shape and Characteristics. Breeding. The Whippet as a Snap-Dog. As a Race-Dog. As a Sporting Dog. As a Show Dog. As a Companion. Training. Tracks and Racecourses. Racing Rules. Management of Meetings. Tables of Times, Distances and Weights. The Rules of Handicapping. Kennels. Food and Clothing. Diseases. This is a fascinating read for any whippet enthusiast or historian of the breed, but also contains much information that is still useful and practical today. Many of the earliest dog breed books, particularly those dating back to the 1900s and before, are now extremely scarce and increasingly expensive. VINTAGE DOG BOOKS are republishing these classic works in affordable, high quality, modern editions, using the original text and artwork.

Book Description
Cafe Haiku isn't a poetry book. Instead, Zenbu Nometa has twirled the short Japanese poetics into a witty commentary on cafes, from the daily ritual of buying lattes to a metaphor following the metal flap on a sugar dispenser. Paired with quick, lively descriptions that tease the photographs like a shake of cinnamon in an espresso are 47 black and white photographs and the result is Cafe Haiku.
Customer Reviews:
poetry and espresso.......2005-02-22
An American photographer and a Japanese poet met in a New York City café. The culmination of that meeting is the book Cafe Haiku, a collection of photographs and haiku poetry with a café/coffee theme. The photographs are vivid black and white scenes of the elements of a café; from the laptop taping techs to the cigarette waving philosophers to the jars of stirring sticks and display cases of pastries. The poetry ranges from whimsical to romantic, with some contemplation in between.
I read this brief collection while sipping an Americano (with half-n-half) at the café around the corner from my house. Unfortunately, the noise of conversations around me in the crowded space did not allow for much contemplation. My attention was drawn to the more whimsical poems and pictures. Particularly one photograph of a tin labeled Cinnamon resting on a marbled table top. The haiku that accompanied the picture expressed the complexity of modern café accoutrements:
How did the bark of
trees end up in can we
sprinkle on milk foam?
This book will be comfortable on both a coffee table or a bookshelf in a café.
Not only for coffee nuts.......2004-11-24
I am a coffee nut so could not help but buy this volume (actually four copies for some co-nuts)...but when my son-in-law, a lover of photography, saw this little volume he was so stunned that he lifted one of my copies.
Seemingly simple (short poems, b&w photos)...but complex and thoughtful. Intelligent and elegant. Nuances intermingle as you percieve both poem and photograph.
Even if you can get an idea by doing an inside search (do it)..holding this little volume and savoring it is something else altogether: Like comparing the experience of slowly drinking freshly brewed quality coffee to that of just downing a cup of instant.
I take my haiku with cream and sugar there big fellow...........2004-08-04
This tiny tome is as espresso for the awakening mind, still groggy from the night's adventures. Those of us living in foggy San Francisco know the extreme importance of a very good cup of freshly ground haiku first thing in the morning to jumpstart the day. The creators of Cafe Haiku have brewed up this literally and visually entertaining book to reward those who sip from it -whether slowly, savoring each haiku/image blend, or tossed down & dash for the door - with calming simple pleasure, much as a perfect cuppa joe from the corner caffe.

Book Description
To the Edge of the Sky is the harrowing account of a remarkable woman's life in communist China-a tale of human courage in the face of shocking inhumanity and hardship. Anhua Gao (her name means Tranquil Flower) was born in 1949, the year that Mao Tse Tung declared the foundation of the People's Republic of China. To The Edge of the Sky is, like Jung Chang's Wild Swans, an inspiring and heartrending story of life under communist rule and, at the same time, a compelling and detailed history of China's political upheaval through the twentieth century.
Gao's early childhood is idyllic-both of her parents are highly respected workers in the Communist army and the family lives in comfort, with many privileges. By the time Anhua is eleven, however, both are dead-and their reputation proves a fragile shield from the horrors of communist China. With an assured and deliberate voice, and from the perspective of her new and hard-won safety of a new life in Britain (her mother once pointed out the island country to her on a Chinese world map, located on the far left "on the edge of the sky"), Gao interweaves a picture of calamitous Maoist policies with her own story of shocking family betrayal, cruel imprisonment, and bureaucratic absurdity. To the Edge of the Sky is a powerful and evocative autobiography-the story of a woman who, against unbelievable odds, survived to find a happiness she had not dared hope for.

Must Read!.......2007-06-17
Many books have been written about the Cultural Revolution, but this one is the best I've read. It's hard to imagine all that this woman endured and still prevailed. Was in tears after the last page.
A wonderfully written, absolutely compelling memoir.......2004-02-17
I have read many memoirs about life in China during the Cultural Revolution and the Great Leap Forward, but I found this one to be among the very best I've read. The author writes from the heart, and includes so many fascinating and sometimes horrifying details. I found most interesting watching her own inner transformation, from a model child who believed all she was told about Mao and the Chinese government, to an adult who had the courage to defy her unjust accusers without fear. I pray for her continued happiness in England.
My Review.......2003-07-29
This is an amazing story of human courage, love and devotion in the face of inhumanity. I picked up the book and couldn't stop reading until it was finished. The story of China and her life is being told through the eyes of a child right to her adult life. I also leart alot about Chinese history and the people reponsible for it and mistakes that sometimes only human can make. In short AnHua has captured the mood and feelings of the Chinese people through a totally human perspective. Great Book.
Compelling Story!.......2003-05-23
This book was extremely compelling. I could not put it down! It told an amazing story of what it was like to live in China during the Communist regime and to experience such turmoil. It is a wonderful story of survival. It was a very interesting way to learn a little Chinese history. I salute the author for her command of the English language to be able to write such a compelling memoir.
Where is Hollywood when you need them!.......2003-04-03
This is an amazing storey of one person's courage and determination to survive in a world where everything is upside down. The book is perfect for people who enjoy a powerful emotional experience, and also for those with an interest in the turmoil of the recent history of China. I'm a 32 year old male student of Asian studies, and I have to admit that this storey and the way it is told turned me into a little boy, falling for its author and sometimes on the verge of tears. A great read for all!
