Excellent cultural guide - not best for planning.......2002-06-23

My sister and I recently traveled to Scotland for a 10-day holiday. We found the Blue Guide to be an excellent resource for information on the history and culture of Scotland. The history of various buildings and sites was provided in great detail as were descriptions of building interiors. The walks outlined were good and led one to lesser-known locations.

I found there to be several weaknesses, though. The book could not be used for planning a trip in terms of accomodations, shopping or restaurants as very little information is provided regarding those specifics. The index is woefully inadequate requiring one to try and remember which region a small town is located in order to find information. Attractions and sites are not rated - one is left wondering which sites would be the best when time is limited.

My sister had purchased Fodor's Scotland edition which I would recommend as a primary guide book particularly when selecting accomodations and restaurants. The Blue Guide was a great secondary guide book - particularly regarding the history and legends of Scotland.

The Thinker's Travel Guide.......2002-01-17

We used the Blue Guides for Florence and Venice last year, and we were amazed at how much detailed information they contained about history, art, and culture. So when I began planning a long Scotland trip, I was happy to find a Blue Guide for the country.

Blue Guide boasts several benefits which I haven't found in other guides. The first is an appreciation for historical details. Here you will discover who actually built the castle you're visiting, who painted the portrait in the hall, when the furniture was made, along with who lived there and what they accomplished. And these details are not only there for the most famous portraits and castles, but also for those that other guidebooks don't even mention.

The second benefit of the Blue Guide is the city walks you'll find here. Some guidebooks approach a city based on how many famous sights it has. They list the sights and how much they cost, and you get to find your way on a map from place to place. Blue Guide takes an intelligent step away from that approach and takes you on a walk around the city. Maps are included, and you could easily deviate from the walk, but why would you want to? If you follow Blue Guide's walks, you'll read descriptions of the architecture along quaint streets, and you'll be led to all of the galleries and sights you want to see.

The final benefit of using a Blue Guide is never needing to buy a local guide to a gallery or museum. You know those audio guides that give you a tour of galleries? You won't have to pay for any of them, because Blue Guide will walk you through each room, painting by painting.

Finally, a word about the more practical details found in this guide. The maps are excellent, but they are divided into several pages. At first, they are a bit confusing. But once you adjust to the layout, they are invaluable and great reference tools. If there is a weakness in the Blue Guide, it is the availability of practical details like lodging and train schedules. With the Internet, we planned all of our lodging online. And if you're moderately flexible in your train times, trains run so often in the UK that you won't have to wait long after showing up at the station. Blue Guide does list restaurants, and my experience with those listed in the past has been very good. Overall, this is THE guide for the thinking traveler. It is the only country guide I'll be taking with me!

Big disappointment!.......2006-01-05

This book is very disappointing. The only color is on the cover and the designs in the book are rather poorly drawn. Beyond the first few pages NO information is given (about individual design meanings or tribal origin.)

This is as amateurish a publication as I have ever seen.

Good read for training your rescued dog.......2007-07-03

This book is fun, easy to read, and has many practical tips and ideas for integrating a rescued dog into your home. I work with rescued dogs and offer this book to new adopters when they pick up their new best friend.
Carol Lea Benjamin has written several dog training books, which offer dog owners lots of training advice.

Not About Rescued/Adopted Dogs!!! .......2007-05-12

This book was so disappointing! I bought it after we got an adult dog from a shelter who had some serious behavior problems. But this book was completely useless!

It isn't about rescued or adopted dogs or how to help them. It is a VERY basic training guide [and I do mean *very* basic]. It is only 93 pages long and at least 30% of those pages are just hand drawn cartoons or stark black and white photos that are irrelevant to the text. I read the whole thing in less than 1 hour [an hour that I wasted unfortunately :( ].

There was *nothing* specifically about training or working with second hand dogs and the special problems/challenges and rewards you face.

The training advice is pretty bad too. First, it is very basic. Second, it is very negative and punative - most "modern" trainers would not advocate or approve of her methods. Third, some of the advice is just plain dangerous. [For example, her advice on how to deal with a dog who is growling is actually contra-indicated by every other resource I've read - her advice will actually teach the dog to *bite* first instead of giving the warning growl. Many of the techniques she recommends would be especially inappropriate for a rescue/shelter dog who faces special challenges in getting past aggression and/or fear because of their history.

Do yourself a favor and skip this book - there are many better books on both dog behavior and dog training. This book is a waste of your time.

Do Not Buy This Book.......2007-03-14

This book is dangerous and filled very bad, dangerous advice. It was written in 1998, so giving the benefit of the doubt, perhaps our thinking about homing a rescue dog has evolved, but this book is extremely outdated. It recommends using the dog's crate as a place for punishment -which we all know is wrong. It further recommends "pops" with the leash to jerk your dog into obedience and "staring down" a dog into submission -again, outdated, inappropriate concepts. It is a very high level, superficial, quick read riddled with inappropriate advice that certainly does not speak to how one goes about brining a new, most likely scared, rescue dog into your home.

Please don't waste your money.......2007-01-08

I was recommended this book as I adopted a dog. I've had dogs, but never an adult rescue dog. I thought it would give me advice on dealing with issues specific to an adult rescue dog, solutions to problems I may encounter, what to expect, etc. What I got was a sappy "be patient and love your dog" summary. Any advice in the book was extremely basic and common sense, especially if you've owned any dog before. Yes, we need to understand and train our second hand dog, but this book provides NONE of the "how". I thought it was a complete waste of money.

Second Hand Dog.......2005-09-18

I read this book before adopting my first Weimaraner; 4 years later I volunteer as a foster for Weimaraner Rescue and I've re-read it several times. After reading many other training books over the years, I've found Carol Lea Benjamin's dog-training books to be the best in their class.

Our rescue gives Second Hand Dog to each new adopter. I also highly recommend Dog Training in 10 Minutes. Both books provide invaluable information--in an entertaining and informative format--as an easy to read, easy to implement way to acclimate & train a new dog in the household.

All of Ms. Benjamin's books give newbie & experienced dog owners insight to canine behavior as well as provide the vehicle to make your dog "the dog you've always wanted." She emphasizes consistency and humane training that's enjoyable to both owner & dog.

Carol Lea Benjamin's dog-training books should be a must-read for every new dog owner!

This book has saved me a minimum of 6 trips to the vet. The most recent was last night, when a visiting dog was showing signs of what I feared might be bloat. It wasn't, and I was able to figure that out based on the information in this book.

Every dog owner, not matter how experienced, will benefit from having this book close at hand. I plan to send a copy home with every puppy I breed.

From Pet Behavior Newsletter: At 408 pages, 8 1/2X11, illustrated and with index Hands-On Dog Care is a big book that handles a big subject with lots of illustrations, photos, charts and guides to what to do in the event of every imaginable medical emergency a professional in the dog business or a serious dog owner would need to know. It is split into sections. The first contains 15 chapters, all of which deal with recognizing symptoms for an incredible array of physical ailments and injuries, then applying first aid. The second section holds 25 chapters on how to establish a dog's baseline behavior, provide for regulasr clinical care, fleas and worms, give oral medication, examine eyes, etc. etc, etc. Even advice about getting a proper first-aid kit...It's all there! (whew)

From THE BOXER REVIEW: This is a worthwhile purchase for all but the most knowledgeable breeder because it covers when to call the Vet, and what to do until you can get the dog to the Vet, and how to handle illness and injuries that do not require a Vet office appointment. Even the most knowledgeable breeders could find this useful to reaffirm a judgement concerning a dog's well being. This Doral Publication is highly recommended.

Dr. Gates does a fantastic job of showing new puppy parents how to teach their puppy the concepts of trust and respect, which leads to self-control. What a unique and refreshing concept! He as great stories, and illustrations that bring his experiences to life and made it easy for my wife and I to apply these skills to our puppy. A fast read with incredibly valuable information. A must have investment in your relationship with your new family member.

The Seleukid kingdom was one of the greatest states of the ancient world, stretching from Greece to India; it is also one of the least known. This reference work lists all the people whose names are known who lived in that kingdom, classifying them into rulers, officials and subjects, and in each case noting their activity. In addition all the foreigners whose lives affected the Seleukid state are listed. The Gazetteer lists the places which were included in the kingdom, classified as regions, including provinces and peoples, or settlements, whether cities or villages, with a description of their place in its history. In addition the institutions of the kingdom, the social and political glue which made it work, are noted and briefly described.

Useful Reference Tool.......2000-07-30

This book is useful for anyone who wants to do research on Seleucid history. It is organized into different sections, making it easy to search for a specific king, city, or individual from this period. The entries all contain detailed references, making it a simple matter for the reader to go back to the original texts in order to learn more about the subjects mentioned in this book. The section on the Seleucid royal family is particularly interesting and useful. It is often difficult to keep track of the various members of the royal family, given their tendency to fight each other and marry multiple times. This gazetteer makes it much easier to understand the relation of all these different people to each other. Where relevant, the discussion of the member of the royal family includes a brief description of their coin types, which is helpful for anyone who has a numismatic interest in the Seleucids. I would recommend this book as valuable reference tool. Such a book has certainly been needed and ably fills a gap in the previous literature.
