Book Description

"The appeal of such a work will be wide, encompassing professionals and laymen alike. The book is the type which a visitor to Pompeii, or to Italy generally, would want to take along as a vade mecum [guidebook]."

—Robert I. Curtis, Professor of Classics, University of Georgia

When workmen excavating the ruins of Pompeii eagerly gathered the native medicinal plants growing there, Wilhelmina Jashemski discovered that this was another example of the continuity of life in the shadow of Vesuvius. Many of the plants used for herbal medicine around Pompeii today are the same ones that ancient authorities such as Pliny the Elder and Dioscorides recommended for treating the same types of disorders.

In this book, Jashemski presents an herbal of thirty-six medicinal plants, most of them known to the ancients and still employed today. She describes each plant's contemporary medicinal uses and compares them to ancient practices as recorded in literary sources. Scientific, English, and Italian names and the plant's mythological associations complete the entries, while elegant, full-page portraits depict each plant visually.

5 out of 5 stars Informative, beautiful book with lovely photos/illustrations.......2005-05-12

My boss, who teaches graduate studies at UMD where Professor Jashemski also taught for many years recommended her works to me because he knew I had a keen interest in herbal medicine as well as archeology. A POMPEIAN HERBAL was published in 1999, a few short years after THE GARDENS OF POMPEII, HERCULANEUM, AND THE VILLAS DESTROYED BY VESUVIUS, which Jashemski co-edited with Frederick Meyer -- and a masterpiece on this topic and era -- was published.

The Pompeii Herbal demonstrates that medicinal plants have been around thousands of years, and in use until modern petrochemical compounds came on the scene. Furthermore, when Jashemski was working at Pompeii, she discovered the locals around and near Pompeii continued to use medicinal plants noted by the Romans, demonstrating yet again that herbal medicine and homeopathic remedies in use to day are not new. The book includes an informative text about ancient Roman medicinal uses of plants, many lovely photos of the work site and micron photos of seeds, pollens, etc., as well as illustrations of the noted plants.

I discovered reading Jashemski's book that many of the plants used by the ancient Romans grow in my own back yard or in pots - under my care of course, as they are not native to my area: Artemesia, Calamintha nepeta (cat mint), Centranthus ruber, Citrus limon. Foeniculum vulgare (Fennel) and Petroselinum crispum (Parsley) to name a few.

1 out of 5 stars Fanciful Account of Alexander McGillivray.......2001-04-23

The author states, in the book's preface, that it is a travesty that Alexander McGillivray has received so little attention and renown as a major figure in our Nation's early history. This book is meant to fill the void.

Unfortunately, the writer has provided fiction in the guise of fact. This book codifies some family legends about Alexander and creates many new myths.

This book may be entertaining literature for children but it must not be considered as historical nonfiction.

From the supplier: A vocational education pilot project supported by Roland Digital Group helped graphics arts students at Prairie High School in Brush Prairie, WA create a successful sign-making enterprise. Roland donated a CAMM-1/20 plotting system which, when programmed with Symbol Graphics' Letter-Art 7.5 graphics software and run on an Epson Equity II microcomputer, enabled the 16 students in the pilot program to make professional quality signs. The program expanded from the point where the Sign Shop, as the project was named, supplied signs for the school district to the current level, where it operates as a successful small business. Revenues for the fall semester of 1992 were $3,200, and the students are building valuable skills not only in graphics design but in business administration at a practical level.

Terri Crisp is an amazing woman who inspired me and many other people to get involved in animal disaster work. She laid the groundwork for the animal disaster relief movement. Terri's dedication, in spite of vicious attacks from petty people, continues to inspire.

I'm sure that mistakes were made during Katrina. That was pretty much the status quo for every relief organization involved in the effort, animal related or not. And these animal organizations, sadly, all fight against each other. I'll never understand it when they all claim to have the same goal. It is such a waste of time and resources.

El Dorado Hills-based Noah's Wish, a nonprofit organization devoted to helping animal disaster victims, has closed its doors amid an ongoing investigation by the California Attorney General.

But not before many former volunteers and employees reportedly walked off the job.

"I decided to leave Noah's Wish in December 2006 because I was absolutely disgusted with (founder) Terri Crisp," said Patricia Jones, former media director for the nonprofit.

Jones would comment further due to the ongoing investigation by the California Attorney General.

Founder Terri Crisp started Noah's Wish in 2002, but the nonprofit gained national recognition for its animal rescue efforts during Hurricane Katrina in late 2005.

Former workers say there is no doubt that Noah's Wish helped animals in Slidell, Louisiana after Katrina, but allege mishandling of funds led to an investigation into founder Crisp.

According to a 2005 audit, Noah's Wish generated $8 million in donations after Katrina, but spent just over $1 million on disaster relief efforts.

In January 2006, Crisp told media that Noah's Wish had received only $5 million in donations.

However, 2005 tax return forms stated less than $2 million of Noah's Wish funding was restricted, meaning only that amount was delegated specifically towards Katrina relief work.

Because the bulk of the money was paid via PayPal, donors could not indicate how their funds were to be used-leaving spending up to the charity's discretion.

Former employees pointed out Crisp's alleged lavish spending of company money: brand-new vehicles, plasma television sets for Crisp's office, and a $5,000 painting commissioned by artist Dan Rojas for the nonprofit's office.

The organization has allegedly not responded to a disaster since Katrina, yet continued to solicit funds.

In a letter to Noah's Wish partners dated February 2007, Crisp asked for help, calling preparing for future disasters increasingly challenging.

"It's natural to assume the time to support us is during disasters, but there are funding needs everyday," she said. "In order to sustain our mission between disasters, an ongoing source of funding is imperative."

Former workers also report favoritism for relatives and family friends within the organization.

In late 2005, Crisp appointed her daughter Chief Operations Officer. The daughter is also listed as a board member on the group's 990. Other board members included Crisp's cousin, Crisp's daughter's fiancée, as well as another married couple.

A statement on the Noah's Wish Web site said that as of March 28, Crisp was no longer associated with the group.

The site also acknowledged the investigation, indicating restricted funds as a source of inquiry.

"The California Attorney General has taken the position that certain funds donated to Noah's Wish during this period, and its immediate aftermath, are restricted and may only be used for the animal victims of Hurricane Katrina, rather than the animal victims of other disasters or for general disaster preparedness," the statement read.

"Noah's Wish disagrees with the Attorney General's position with respect to those funds, but is working cooperatively with the Attorney General toward a timely resolution of the dispute."

The nonprofit said it has set aside disputed funds and agreed not to use those funds pending final resolution of the investigation.

Due to lack of funding, Noah's Wish ceased operations early this month.

"As a former volunteer and employee all I can say is the public and volunteers were constantly praising Noah's Wish for being so organized, so on the ball," said a former worker who wished to remain anonymous.

"If this is true, how could the organization not know the laws pertaining to non profit organizations donations?"

In an email sent to staff, Crisp defended the nonprofit's spending.

"So, ask yourself, if you were an organization who started to receive an avalanche of donations and it became apparent pretty soon after the mail started to arrive that there was going to be enough money to pay the expenses for that disaster, what would you do with the donations that continued to come in? Send them back? Tell people to quit sending money? This was the dilemma we faced."

Phone and email messages left for Noah's Wish last week were not returned.

Founder Terri Crisp could not be reached for comment.

The Attorney General's office could not comment on the investigation, said an office spokeswoman.

Emergency Animal Rescue Stories looks at how disasters affect rescuers behind-the-scenes. I found it a particular poignant point by Terri Crisp to illustrate the enthusiasm of new volunteers in the field and the devastation felt by all rescuers when they find they cannot help every animal.

I appreciated Crisp's candor in sharing her experiences with the reader. By selecting a wide variety of disasters that did not get much media attention, Terri Crisp shows how EARS responds to disasters, how they work during a disaster, and the people they encounter. I found that reading the 'human' side of things in a book for animal lovers helped me understand that in order for EARS to be successful, they have to take into account what happens to the people (both owners and the rescuers) when animals are lost, killed, or found. By the end of the book, it becomes quite obvious that the life of a rescuer is extremely hard--physically and emotionally. Whether you're an animal lover or not, you'll find from reading the book that animals affect people no matter what.

Like some of the other reviewers, I was not a big fan of Crisp's writing style because the narrative voice and the dialogues seem stiff and forced for the most part. However, when she focuses on a specific rescue during a disaster, the writing smoothes itself out, and I find myself immersed in the narrative.

I haven't read Out of Harm's Way yet but judging from comments by other reviewers, I suspect it focuses more on animal rescue stories which could be why it was better written. I look forward to reading it and other books by Terri published in the future.

5 out of 5 stars All About What Really Matters- Animal Rescue.......2004-05-06

While this book might not contain as many fuzzy, feel-good, heartstring-tuggers as Crisp's earlier book, Out of Harm's Way, I think her second effort measures up just as well to her first. This book features stories from disasters that didn't generate as much press and also focuses on the nitty gritty of animal rescue work- she describes some of the dangers, the politics, the risks, and the disappointments. The book isn't intended to be a bunny-hugging Chicken Soup for the Pet Lover's Soul- it serves as an eye-opening introduction to the difficult but ultimately satisfying world of animal rescue, written by a true trailblazer in the field. Recommended (and inspiring) reading for anyone considering volunteering for EARS.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book Brings It all Home.......2002-05-15

What great reading for the animal lover! This book gave me a feel for what it's like to work in a real disaster and what goes on behind the scenes. It made me realize what hard work animal rescue can be and made me appreciate the people that devote their lives in this way. There were times I laughed out loud and times that I wish someone had warned me to get a Kleenex! I thought this book was a great follow-up to Crisp's other book, "Out of Harm's Way" because it shows disasters that were not necessarily as "media-worthy" but still just as important to the lives saved and impacted. It shows that not only is Terri a true asset to animals, but also to the people that care for and love them. I highly recommend both books and anxiously await a third from Terri Crisp!

Ketzel Levine is known nation-wide as the Doyenne of Dirt, thanks to her regular gardening chats with the horticulturally challenged Scott Simon on NPR's Weekend Edition. Plant This! is a collection of Levine's 100 best recommendations, drawn from her weekly plant profile columns in the Portland (Oregon) Oregonian. Like many a gardening tome, Levine's covers perennials, grasses, shrubs, and trees. But unlike the prose in most other gardening references, her writing is more than engaging--it's fun. Sure, she tells you the botanical name for each of the plants, but she also explains how to pronounce it (so Arisaema sounds like "Pasadena," and Enkianthus sounds like "send me Kansas"). She also lists the basic needs for each (for jack-in-the-pulpit, this includes part shade, humus-rich soil, good drainage, and human blood) plus its worst enemies (for the magnolia, this is overwatering and excessive shade, while for sumac it's its own greed).

These plant profiles are organized by season, they're accompanied by unusually nice illustrations (courtesy of René Eisenbart), and they include wonderful snippets of entertaining information, such as the fact that Euphorbia (common name: spurge) was well known to both the Oubangu tribes of the Congo and the citizens of Julius Caesar's Rome, and story about the iris, which was named after the Greek goddess Iris, who traveled so far, she "picked up rainbow pieces on the soles of her feet, so that wherever she walked on earth, her footprints bore flowers in all the colors of the rainbows she traveled."

What other wise, pragmatic, reliable garden reference books include such enjoyable reading? Levine's Plant This! is an exceptional find, a gardening book that's at home on your coffee table as well as in the dirt and mulch of your garden. --Stephanie Gold

                              Book Description

In her inimitable style--smart, smart-alecky, and seriously enthusiastic--Ketzel Levine describes her favorite plants: those that offer outstanding color, fragrance, form, and performance in the garden.

Known as "The Doyenne of Dirt" on NPR's "Weekend Edition," Ketzel Levine has a national reputation for unabashed gardening advice. Drawn from her popular column in "The Oregonian," here are Levine's 100 recommendations for the best perennials, grasses, shrubs, and trees. With gorgeous watercolor illustrations of every plant, this book constitutes the ultimate gardener's shopping list! Levine reveals whats so special about her picks, along with advice on how to keep them happy. So whether it is clematis cirrhosa (sounds like "feminist mimosa") or ophiopogon (rhymes with "sophie showed logan"), these plants are the best of the best, served up with a whole lot of attitude.

2 out of 5 stars I love Ketsel, but the book is just ok.......2007-06-18

There were several things that Ms Levine didn't consider, she should have, I think, said she was really focused on gardens for our region, (I live in Seattle) but didn't seem to take into account some v. troublesome plants that have included on the noxious or obnoxious (a real list!) weed list with the state. Budalia (butterfly bush) for instance. The other concern I had was the inputs needed for some of the suggested plants. I would strongly suggest Mary Robson's two books on gardening for Oregon and Washington, both Month-By-Month Gardening in Washington & Oregon: What To Do Each Month To Have A Beautiful Garden All Year (Month-By-Month Gardening in Washington & Oregon)Washington & Oregon Gardener's Guide
In her books she considers the inputs that will be required by the gardener, easy of growing, water use, design considerations, they are both good guides for beginning and advanced gardeners.

5 out of 5 stars If you live in the Pacific Northwest.......2007-06-10

If you live in the Pacific Northwest, and if your character has been developed by an unremitting rainfall that blots out the sun all winter and even soaks the Portland Rose Parade in early June, and if you know a gardener who has not read this book, and if you have not shared your enthusiasm about this book with them, do so now. But wait -- if you don't know who Ketzel Levine is, tell them about this book after you've read it, and after you've read Levine's columns in the Oregonian, and after you've heard her talk to T.C. Boyle talk about his garden on NPR, in her series on celebrity gardens.

Although I've been writing about gardens for 20 years, my ignorance was vast and cherished, until I read this book. For the first time, I understand a little about the plants that surround me. Humor is a valuable communication tool, and Ketzel Levine has learned how to use it as a carrier wave. I haven't had this much fun since I read The Egg and I.

It's not too early to consider this book as an ideal holiday gift, six months from now. I ran across my first copy in Powell's, and was transfixed: THIS IS WHAT I WANT TO KNOW. My girlfriend is getting a copy this week, and she'll adore it.

Best of all, it seems to be undiscovered. A lot of people haven't read it yet; have been doing an informal survey of fellow and sister gardeners and garden-magazine editors, and only a few have read it. It should be on every gardener's bookshelf.

                              2 out of 5 stars It's an opinion list........2001-05-15

It's hard to rate an opinion based on accuracy, so I'm rating this book on usefulness and general appeal.

In terms of general appeal, I have two major objections to this book:

One, it is heavily biased to woodland and foliage plants. This is fine to a point, but to bill it as "best bets for year-round gorgeous gardens" I think is misleading. We are talking about plantings where shape and texture dominate, and that is a rather specialized gardening challenge.

Two, this book is very region-specific in terms of the plants covered. The author and I both live in Zone 8, but she lives in the Pacific Northwest, while I live on the Atlantic Seaboard. The upshot of this is that, despite 5 years in the nursery business, I have never seen a great many of the plants in this book. They can, theoretically, be grown here, but good luck laying your hands on them. Mail order catalogs can solve this problem, but it is something to remember when considering this book.

In terms of usefulness, this is, as I've said, an opinion-based book. It's usefulness will be limited to how closely your opinions on what makes for a "gorgeous" garden matches hers. Do you prefer subtle presentation or ostentation? Will you take the time to appreciate small beauties, and do you have the patience and skill to bring those features out in such a way that those less experienced will be able to find them? Not my call; just remember that this book is about small details. A considerable part of each two page entry is devoted to making the case for _why_ a given specimen should be considered beautiful.

The long and the short of it is that this book is not for beginners. Nor, I think, is it a particularly good introduction to the more advanced forms of plantings. Overall I found that I either knew the plant to begin with (in which case I already had an opinion and didn't need hers), or the information provided --while detailed-- did not adequately convey to me the appearance of the plant. Unfortunate, since it is a book about selection, with relatively little to say about cultivation.

2 out of 5 stars Plant this-- and watch it die........2001-03-16

This book should come with a cautionary note: the author is a smug zone-8 gardener; unless you are in the Pacific Northwest, this book is useless as a gardening guide. Moreover, the author does not include USDA hardiness zones in the description, perhaps instead of the cutesy "sounds like" guide to pronouncing the latin name ("Epimedium" sounds like "stop the tedium".) Perhaps it did not occur to her that people from other regions of the country would read this book. For those of us outside the Pacific Northwest, this book should have been called "Plant this-- and watch it die." The illustrations are lovely, but the author's affected folksiness (most egregious example so far: "Yup") make this an extremely annoying read.

2 out of 5 stars Beautiful illustrations, overly talky text.......2001-03-14

I once took a friend to a beautiful wild garden that had been planted (over many years) incredibly well. Since she is a fan of plants and gardens I had hoped that we could walk the grounds - quietly and appreciatively. Instead my friend chattered incessantly for the entire hour and a half we were there. Each plant provoked a monologue: anecdotes, jokes, asides, and factual material in an ultimately maddening cacophonous symphony. This book had the same effect on me. You are awed by the quiet beauty of Rene Eisenbart's paintings, you know that the plants described are great, but the text is so talky as to be distracting - and even annoying. If you enjoy a lot of off-topic opinions and chat about all sorts of things, then this is the book for you. 5 out of 5 stars Excellent Book for new Camcorder Users.......2005-05-21

This is a terrific book that should be included with every new camcorder. A little of the information and the camcorders in the illustrations may be a little bit out of date, but the basic information is must know info. I have a new camcorder using tapes because of the high cost of digital recorders. It was difficult to find good books on using this type of camcorder. This one answered all my questions and problems in a simple straight forward non-technical easy to understand manner. The information would also be helpful for digital camcorder use. The illustrations were great. Mr. Fuller gives one of the most important rules for using the camcorder: "Let the subject do the moving, keep the camera still."
It is advice like this that make this the most valuable of all the camcorder books I've read.
Can not recommend this book highly enough for a new camcorder user.

2 out of 5 stars Book Is Too Basic for the Price-No Editing Advice.......2000-10-16

This book is written at a very basic level, and the subject matter is better covered by Deni Bown's book "101 Essential Tips on Video" at one-third the price. I was looking for advice on the best techniques for editing my videos using my camcorder and a VCR. Fuller dismisses the idea of editing, claiming that most people are too lazy to edit their work, so they end up with "2-hour videos of Junior's birthday party," etc., which gather dust in a drawer because they're "too long to watch." People who are that lazy aren't likely to have the discipline to learn and follow his methods, which amount to planning and shooting the finished product as you go "in the camcorder", without allowing for errors which could be edited out later when you make copies with the VCR.

I was looking for a book that gave me the secrets of movie making that the pros use, without having to wade through a bunch of technical terms. I only wanted to make my home movies (shot on my camcorder) look more interesting and professional. This is the book! It is clear and concise with helpful illustrations. It is short enough to read in an afternoon and the tips are so practical that anyone with a camcorder can begin using them immediately. He tells you how to "pan" and "zoom" correctly as well as how to get the best shot. He also gives examples for how to shoot birthday parties, family picnics and vacations so that you can begin to put all of the "shots" you take together. I was especially intrigued with the idea of editing in the camcorder. He tells you how to make your home movies look like they've been edited while you're shooting them, so that you don't have to invest in all kinds of editing equipment or hook up vcr's to each other, etc. Overall, I found this book to be very easy to understand (especially with the illustrations) and practical. I will definitely keep it in my camcorder bag for future reference!

Mis filmaciones han mejorado un 100% despues de leer los primeros 4 capítulos. Los consejos son claros y prácticos. El resto del libro tambien es muy bueno. Lo recomiendo como primer libro. Lo unico que necesita es una camara de video y el libro.

I went into this book with the intention of ripping it to pieces. I came away disagreeing with the message and impressed at how well Mr. Boyles writes.

Any professional writer should read this book, if for no other reason than to explore some of the better subtleties of the trade. This book is well written, clear, it moves admirably well considering the subject matter which I previously would have thought to be prose-proof. It shows how enjoyable even subjects that one would previously have had no interest in can come alive for a reader with the right author.
