Aboriginal Plant Use in Canada's Northwest Boreal Forest

This handbook describes the traditional uses by aboriginal people of more than 200 different plants from Canada's boreal forest. It is the result of original ethnobotanical fieldwork in 29 communities across the boreal forest region of Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and Alberta. Natural resources of the boreal forest have always been essential to the dietary, medical, economic, and spiritual well-being of First Nations people, but until now much of their traditional environmental knowledge has remained unrecorded and at risk of being lost.

To compile this book the authors, along with seven other First Nation trainees, five Métis trainees, and four other botany students, learned how to collect voucher plant specimens and record traditional knowledge about the use of plants for medicine, handicrafts, technology, and ritual practices. Over 100 elders contributed information that they felt should be shared among communities.

The entries and accompanying photographs are arranged according to the plant family and include information on physical descriptions, habitat, uses for food, technology, medicine, and potential economic use. The book also includes an explanation of the research approach, a literature review, and an overview of the ecological and cultural background of the area.

Spruce forest ethnobotany.......2001-09-24

This is a compendium of data on plants from the boreal forest which are used for food, or medicine, or in a variety of ways for handicrafts (in the ample sense of the word). It fills a growing need for ethnobotanic scripture, when much knowledge is being lost because it is «old-fashioned». The data are presented in an easy-to-use format of one species per page (more-or-less), and cover the three aspects of use already mentioned, as well as the known names in Chipewyan, Cree, English, French, Latin, Ojibwe, and Slave. Anything known about chemical properties is also included. This is truly an in-depth compilation, and shows us that there is more in the forest than moss and spruce trees (and unsuspected uses even for these).

This book is spectacular or should I say "truly golden!"
I am thrilled several photographs of my three rescued Golden Retrievers, Ginger and Audrey and the late Cinnamon, are in the book however I must add that the entire book is so superb... it is truly a "complete" guide to Goldens! Being involved in Golden rescue I have found it to be an awesome tool to share with those interested in learning more about Goldens, those considering adopting a Golden and for those who are already a Golden "parent(s)" - it is well written,
thorough, organized, and the photographs really highlight the book! Consider donating a copy to your local library, schools, etc. like I have done. It is a great guide to refer to time and time again! This book is a lot of fun and educational at the same time! My Goldens Audrey and Ginger give it four paws up!

Hi there, this is Margaret H. Bonham. I hope you'll check out this book if you're a Golden Retriever fan. This is a basic primer on getting a Golden Retriever. They're great dogs, no doubt about it, but do you know all there is to know about them?

In this book I cover the basics: choosing a Golden, bringing a puppy and adult home, clicker training a Golden, grooming and caring for a Golden, health issues (allergies are big here!) and other cool things. Check it out. I think you'll like it.

Excelent guide.......2000-02-24

We are going to get our first puppy over the next two weeks and right now I am reading everything I can find about the breed. I am a first time dog owner and I did not even know what a slicker brush was! So, the book could've had more pictures, especially in the areas of grooming and training.

If You Read Just One Book on Goldens..........2000-01-18

What a terrific book! It's the seventh guide to raising/training golden retrievers I've read, and I've learned more from it than from the other six combined. Helpful, useful, practical approaches and solutions on every single page. And what a fun, easy read -- I found myself sneaking "just one more page" after my allotted reading time was up. I'm about to read it a second time -- this time taking some notes about things I'll want to do daily/weekly when I get my golden pup. I'm also eager to read other works of this author. Her loving, respectful, practical approach to life with golden retrievers sets a wonderful model for anyone who wants to bring this terrific breed into his or her home. Don't miss this excellent book.

The author does have Golden Retrievers and seems to really love the breed of dog. I did find some useful information in it, but it didn't keep my interest like "Uncle Matty's" videos and books do. I have to force myself to read another chapter since I want to learn as much as I can before I get my Golden Retriever puppy next week.

A practical, informative, well researched and smart guide........1999-10-24

The author presents a very thorough guide to canine pack behavior, proper obedience training, identifying problems and solutions, and providing responsible health care for golden retrievers. She provides practical information that can be used by novice as well as experienced golden owners. She obviously knows this breed very well. We've had two goldens in the past and will be getting a new pup soon. This book is a must for anyone who wants to understand and enjoy the raising of a golden retriever.

A Wonderful Achievement.......1999-03-30

Although I've been collecting photography books for a number of years, I must confess to knowing nothing about Pepe Navarro. This leads me to believe that he is relatively young, and remains unknown in serious photographic and curatorial circles. However, based on this massive and largely impressive collection of photographs taken in Havana, Cuba, I am sure his obscurity is destined to end. I highly recommend this photo-study of a once glorious city and its people to anyone interested in fine art photography.

WEEKEND IN HAVANA by Robert McCabe is a beautiful and evocative paean to the Cuban people and to the city of Havana. Even the dilapidation that comes with poverty can't hide the splendor of the city and the vibrancy, creativity, humanity and hopefulness of the people. This is a wonderful book, by a photographer whose pictures tell endless stories!

Lord Lao, first known as the philosopher Laozi, the purported author of the Daode jing, later became an immortal, a messiah, and high god of Daoism. Laozi, divinized during the Han dynasty and in early Daoist movements, reached his highest level of veneration under the Tang when the rulers honored him as a royal ancestor. In subsequent eras he remained prominent and is still a major deity in China today.

Livia Kohn's two-part study first traces the historical development of Lord Lao and the roles he played at different times for different believers. Part Two is based on one of Lord Lao's major hagiographies, the twelfth-century Youlong zhuan (Like Unto a Dragon), and studies the complex myth surrounding him. Lord Lao appears in eight distinct mythical roles, each associated with a particular phase in his life: He is the creator of the universe, bringer of cosmic order, teacher of dynasties, and the divine made flesh on earth. He is also the converter of the barbarians, the source of major Daoist revelations, and the god of Great Peace and political harmony. Comparing his story with related Confucian, Buddhist, and Western mythic tropes, Kohn illuminates the dynamics of the Daoist tale and persuades us to appreciate Lord Lao as a key deity of traditional China. Includes illustrations and tables.

Livia Kohn is Professor of Religion and East Asian Studies, Boston University; Adjunct Professor of Chinese Studies, Eotvos Lorand University, Budapest, Hungary; and Visiting Professor of Japanese Religion, Stanford Center for Technology and Innovation, Kyoto, Japan.
