Travel is a sensitive business, one where your decisions do make a difference, from the little details on up. Your choice of destination, obviously, will influence your experience, but so will the shoes you choose to walk in, how much luggage you opt to bring, where you stay, what inoculations you get before you go, and with whom you decide to travel.

Travel is often associated with spontaneity and freedom, but there's usually some preparation and forethought necessary to get you to that carefree time. That's where Deborah Burns comes in. An accomplished, savvy traveler herself, she writes sensibly and lucidly on those little things (itineraries, visas, foreign languages, transportation, children, and budgets) that make the difference between a holiday to dream about and a nightmare vacation experience. The more preparation the better. Some visas take months to procure. The best travel deals are often available far in advance of departure. And as for those shoes, to bring comfortable, well-broken-in footwear, you can't go shopping for them a week before you leave. Covering health, business, souvenirs, safety, dining, and what to pack, Burns's most important lesson is that you don't need to learn everything the hard way. --Stephanie Gold

4 out of 5 stars Easy to read and full of useful information........2006-12-16

Deborah Burns writes with an easily readable style and provides thorough coverage of topics many authors leave out, such as hitchhiking, freighter travel, and dealing with beggars. She also gives special attention to concerns common among female travelers, like safety in social situations overseas. Helpful checklists for planning and packing are included, and the index is very well done.

This book was published in 1997 and is a little dated now (which is the only reason it gets four rather than five stars). Most of what it covers hasn't changed, though, and readers interested in travel will still find it extremely useful as a supplement to other books.

      5 out of 5 stars Great Inspiration.......2002-05-24

I love to travel. I have seen a lot of America but have never left the country, however, I want to desperately. I am not at an age yet that I can travel alone or make my own travel plans but I dream of the day that I can. This book gave me lots of ideas. I just couldn't stop thinking of the trips I would take one day. This is a great book for any person who loves to travel, is planing a trip, or, like me, is waiting for the day they can hop on a plane and fly to Europe.

      5 out of 5 stars Very informative.......2000-06-20

Well organized, comprehensive and easy to read travel guide that covers all types of travel whether it's for business or pleasure. Includes a lot of safety tips that everyone should consider before they leave home.

      5 out of 5 stars Nice surprise!.......2001-01-18

If you find only one new idea from this book it will repay its cost many times over. The book has lots and lots of suggestions, mostly just codified good common sense. As an experienced adventure traveller, I was pleasantly surprised to find several novel ideas plus a few fresh twists. The focus on the solo woman traveller is interesting, but most of the material is not gender specific.

The fresh idea? I had never thought to make a photo copy of my passport to carry in a different place in case of loss. Although I have never lost a passport, I have heard plenty of horror stories. Not pretty! Great idea, thanks. To extend that idea, I now carry a photo copy of my air tickets too.

                  Book Description

                  Ages Ten and up.

There were people living in Florida for 12,000 years before Columbus got here, living all over the state. Before hardware stores and shopping malls, these people managed to get food, make clothing, and cook their meals. In The Crafts of Florida's First People, Robin Brown asks,

                  How did they do it?

And to answer his question, he actually learns to do things the way that they did. Using materials that you can find in Florida today, you can learn with him how to throw spears and darts, make pottery, weave cloth, mix paint, build traps, and even how to start a fire without matches—just the way Florida's first people did it for thousands of years.

Each chapter has easy-to-follow, fully illustrated directions. Even if you don't have the natural supplies available in your area, the book includes suggestions for alternative materials so you can still learn their crafts. As you work, you will experience some of the daily life of the ancient peoples of Florida. You will find out not only how to make a spear, but what its construction tells us about how the first people hunted and what animals they ate. The last true Florida native died 200 years ago, but you can help keep their culture alive.

3 out of 5 stars Crafts of Florida's First People.......2007-04-03

I bought this book on line while doing research on weaving with palm fronds and other natural materials. It depicts a pretty broad range of natural material crafts and I certainly learned a few things I did not previously know....but unfortunately for me it did not go in depth in the specific area of my interest. Otherwise, it is interesting and informative.

                  5 out of 5 stars Fantastic book!.......2004-02-14

Here's a "must have" book! Anyone who has kids who what to know how Native Americans did things will love it. Great materials lists, clear instructions. This book will add years to the life of Scout leaders, teachers or anyone who has to entertain kids. There's plenty of interesting stuff for adults, too. Nice going, Dr. Brown!

"Lani opened her eyes fully, straining to see something, anything. It was as though she swam in a black sea that blacked out all light, all visual sensation. 'I can't see,' she whispered. 'I can't see!' Her shriek rose and echoed off the blackness."

A seemingly random shooting at her aunt's coffee farm has left Lani Tagama blind. Now she must learn to navigate in a world of darkness. With the help of an embittered ex-cop, Ben, and a half-trained guide dog, Fisher, Lani discovers she can regain a shadow of her former independence.

But strange and dangerous secrets lurk behind the beauty of this seaside paradise. Suspicion grows that this was not a random shooting, but an attempted murder, one with its roots in a hippie commune burned over thirty year ago. Lani realizes she is a target, and that she must find the shooter before he strikes again.

As a person who loves the Hawaiian Islands, this series of books from Colleen Coble has been a refreshing way to transport myself from the mainland to the islands by just picking up the books and begin reading. I love the fact that the places she references in the stories are real and accurate in her descriptions. I am able to actually visualize what she is speaking of through the characters. I am sad that when I finish Midnight Sea book #4 in the Aloha Reef Series that I am at the end! I hope Colleen writes a 5th book!

I enjoyed the first 3 books in this series, and this one is wonderful! The characters are people that I want to know more about, plus there is a connection to characters from the other books. Once I started reading, I had to keep going to find out what happened, so start this book when you have a good chunk of time to spend with it!

I love Colleen Coble's books and this one certainly doesn't let you down. If you love intrigue with a splash of romance, this is a must read.

In this book, Colleen Coble crafts another tight suspense plot filled with twists and turns and rich characters. She transports readers back to Hawaii, the setting for her Aloha Reef series. While this book stands completely on its own, if you read and enjoyed the Aloha Reef series, you will enjoy the reappearance of characters from that series.

Lani is faced with something I think most of us fear - she wakes up one morning unable to see anything. In the midnight sea of darkness, she must learn to cope and strive for some independence. Ben reluctantly agrees to help her learn how to use a guide dog and adjust to her new world. However, he's heard too much about her to be drawn in by her beauty.

The characters struggle with real questions about how their faith can sustain the circumstances of life. And they are brave enough to ask the questions many of us would love to scream to the heavens. As they wrestle with the mystery and their doubts, they also develop a relationship that could extend beyond friendship if they could let go of their pasts.

The book is rich with layers of characters and plots. And Coble does a fantastic job bringing all the layers together into a cohesive and compelling book. And if you're looking for a book to transport you to the beaches of Hawaii on a cold afternoon, this book is the one for you. Coble again creates a vivid setting and a story that could only be set in Hawaii.

                    Book Description

Louise Eldridge is taking her public television garden show on the road--to Hawaii! But the tropical paradise isn't so idyllic once murder makes an unexpected appearance...

Lush with hibiscus, ficus, plumeria, and monkeypod trees, the island of Kauai is the perfect place for Louise to film a few episodes of Gardening with Nature.

After their shoot at the National Tropical Botanical Garden, Louise unwinds with a sunset walk on the beach. But at the base of a cliff, she makes a grisly discovery: the battered body of Matthew Flynn, a noted botanist. Her attempts to save his life are fruitless, and--after seeing his injuries firsthand--Louise is convinced that his death was no accident.

Now it'll take some serious digging for Louise to unearth more clues, but she'll have to be very careful, because this is one killer who is ready to plant her in the ground...

"Neatly plotted...Ripley's green thumb fans will relish the paradise island setting and Louise's reliable sleuthing." --Publishers Weekly

5 out of 5 stars Great story, great setting.......2007-04-02

This is the first book I've read in this series, and it was terrific. The author does an amazing job with the setting, particularly the trip to the volcano. The plant information is interesting and so is the debate in the storyline about searching out new plants for different possible commercial applications. I liked the main character (though I personally didn't think much of her husband!) and was surprised at the solution. Will definitely look to read more by this author.

5 out of 5 stars botany version of Ten Little Indians.......2006-11-06

Louise Eldridge is euphoric as she takes her DC based PBS show, Gardening with Nature, to the Hawaiian island of Kauai for a special shoot at the National Tropical Botanical Garden. Louise has scheduled a panel of expert guests to discuss horticulture. However, she finds the egomaniacal quartet (nursery owner Dr. Bruce Bouting, ethnobiologist Dr. Matthew Flynn, environmentalist Dr. Charles Reuter and Pacific Island expert Dr. Tom Schoonover) so obnoxious she looks forward to leaving paradise for home.

While strolling on the nearby beach, Louise finds the battered body of Dr. Flynn that she quickly concludes was a homicide. Police Chief Randy Hau leads the official investigation, but a second homicide occurs. Unable to heed her spouse's warning to stay out of the dangerous water, the plant lady begins an inquiry as she seeks the root cause of this homicide.

The Gardening Mystery (see SUMMER GARDEN MURDER) crowd will enjoy the change of milieu because Louise feels a need to uncover the botany version of Ten Little Indians. The whodunit is fun to follow as Chief Hau and amateur sleuth Louise separately work the case. Fans of the series will root for the plant lady as Ann Ripley provides a fun tropical cozy.

This is a great book. If you like Sidney Sheldon, Jefferey Archer, or maybe even Elizabeth Gage you will love this book. I could swear this is based on a actual incident but I may be mistaken. None the less. Plan for a good long read, You won't want to put it down.

Murphy's Law: Murphy McKenna managed to get herself stuck in an unexpected, Maine blizzard, in a remote cabin with dead phones, and impassable roads. Could there be a worse time for a wounded man to show up on her doorstep? Not only is Garrett hurt, he's also apparently been out wandering in the storm with a duffel bag stuffed with money, antique jewelry, and a gun. Will Murphy's conscience allow her to turn her back on the handsome stranger who may be a thief, a bank robber, or worse ...? The Scent of Orchids: Elissa Martin arrives in Hawaii to save her cousin from Adam Wolcot. She's unprepared for the effect the man has on her, and decides the months of self-imposed exile on her Missouri farm, following her parents deaths and a failed love life have taken their toll on her mental state. The more she gets to know him, the more she convinces herself that any danger he represents to Lyla is just a figment of her imagination. Can Elissa overcome her distrust of men, and of Adam, enough to fall in love with him?

The Mexican book series Río de Luz was a courageous and energetic presentation of Latin American photography. To honor the accomplishments of the series and the artists, an issue of Aperture is devoted to the Río de Luz collection.

Separate chapters address the outstanding themes concerning the editors of the Río de Luz series-revolution, the American way of life and Cuba, the 1950s, and "poetry of the onlooker." Artists include Lázaro Blanco, Raul Corrales, Hector García, Graciela Iturbide, Nacho López, Pedro Meyer, Miguel Rio Branco, and Mariana Yampolsky. Authors include Carlos Monsiváis, Álvaro Mutis, Victor Flores Olea, Pablo Ortiz Monasterio, Roberto Tejada, Raquel Tibol, and Verónica Volkow.
