A life raft in a sea of confusion!.......2005-12-10
This book got me through Microbiology lab--easy to understand, and thorough. Everything you could want to know about a bacterium or a species is detailed here for you! I'm not selling this one back! Get this if you don't want to be writing reports in the middle of the night, going "oh, shoot, I didn't look up this or that bit of information in my professor's copy!"

A GOOD MANUAL WITH OLD COSTLY GISTS.......2003-01-04
This "Bergey's Manual of Determinative Bacteriology" has an admirable practical approach. It depicted the characteristics of bacterial groups in a straightforward manner. Using a wide focus, it featured vivid illustrations, which will enable you to reason like a professional. The manual provided a good number of easy-to-master materials.
However, I felt that this 9th Edition, which first appeared in 1994, is just too old. The authors should give us a more recent update. Also, the high retail price of this book ensured that many people would go for a better alternative. There are lots of them out there! The choice is yours.
A good reference for little organisms.......2000-06-30
The book is big and heavy and is filled with useful information for the world of microorganisms. All microbiology majors must have this book in their libraries. This book helps you identify, compare, and understand microorganisms better. Every organism is descibed in detail: gram-stain reactions, fermentation reaction, morphology, etc.

Museums in depth, plus a surprisingly useful general guide.......2004-06-12
This is a small book, chock full of information for the London visitor who expects to spend a lot of time at the major museums. While most travel books devote a few pages (at most) for a museum, this one spends 22 pages on the National Gallery alone.
In addition to the mundane details, such as opening hours, charges, and tube station -- which are a lot less mundane when you're in need of that data! -- the museum listings show you the highlights (i.e. the art you'll want to see if you're on a mad rush), plenty of maps, and a wing-by-wing guide. For example, for rooms 52-53 of the National Gallery, it says (in part), "The paintings in this room and the next were made before 1400, and show how the rather static, frontal style we recognize from Byzantine icons gradually incorporated greater realism, through the influence of Giotto." And then it tells you a bit about the paintings (or whatever) you're looking at. I'm not sure this is better than a live guide, but it's sure an improvement from wandering around the place, feeling as though I'm supposed to be impressed but unsure why.
The book gives detailed information about these museums: National Gallery, Courtauld Gallery, National Portrait Gallery, British Museum, Wallace Collection, Sir John Sloane's Museum, Tate Modern, Saatchi Gallery, Tate Britian, Queen's Gallery, and the Victoria and Albert Museum. Each is grouped by neighborhood, so you can plan your day at Westminster or South Kensington, etc.
If that's all it did, it might be worth the modest price... assuming you're doing a trip devoted to museums. But if, like me, you'll spend only a bit of time in the museums, buying (and lugging along) a book solely on that subject might seem silly.
However, that's where I was pleasantly surprised. Art/Shop/Eat London really does live up to the Shop/Eat part of the equation. For each neighbhorhood, the book includes a section called "On Route," which lists commercial galleries as well as other, and smaller attractions (such as the London Transport Museum or the Photographer's Gallery). You'll also find a list of shopping destinations in the surrounding area, everything from bookstores to clothes to kids' stores.
*Quite* appreciated is a description of the eating and drinking at both the museums themselves and restaurants in the surrounding area. As I'm sure you know, sometimes a museum cafe is a destination in itself, and sometimes it's an overpriced fast-food joint. This book really guides you: "small and can be very busy," or "sophisticated French cuisine, with a surprisingly good range of vegetarian options." Plus, the general restaurant listings are clear enough (if short) that I'm certain I'll take this book with me on my next trip.
It does list hotels (also by neighborhood), but they're nothing to shout about. You'll probably want to turn to one of your other travel books (or the Internet) to find a place to stay.

Book Description
This book examines how the economic performance of immigrants is shaped by national and urban social institutions. In the United States, particularly in the high-immigration cities, most immigrant-origin groups have significantly lower earnings than do their counterparts in Canadian or Australian cities. Immigration policy is not a factor, however; in fact U.S. immigrants-in particular origin groups-are not less skilled. American institutions, including education, labor market structures, and social welfare, all reflect greater individualism and all contribute to the potential for inequality. Resulting higher poverty rates for America's immigrants explains their more extensive use of its weaker welfare system. Jeffrey Reitz's social institutional approach projects the impact of institutional restructuring-past and future-on the economic performance of immigrants in these countries.

Reitz misses a great deal concerning what is important for the incorporation of immigrants. The book has a relatively narrow empirical focus and thus deprives itself of the sort of comparative basis that would allow for a more insightful treatment. Immigration studies will require a more broad-minded approach to move beyond some of the half-truths that continue to characterize popular and sometimes even scholarly thinking.

A very good book for the history of breed and anyone who is going to breed the shih tzu, this is the book.

Best Book on Shih Tzu EVER.......2003-12-03
There are not many books on Shih Tzu, and most of them are formulaic. This book stands out by a mile as the best-written, most informed, most sensible and complete book about the breed. Even though it is an older book, it has not lost anything over the years, because the breed is still the same! The special care that Shih Tzus need is explained here better than you can find it anywhere else. I would say to all breeders, when you sell a puppy, and people want to know what to do, tell them to buy this book, because it is written by two women who were breeders and understood the breed. It doesn't have any chapters in there that some publishers thinks would apply equally to a Great Dane or a Pointer or a Shih Tzu. This book is special, it is all about Shih Tzu. Don't even bother with those other books.

This publication is a most comprehensive, richly-documented dictionary which presents, in local Arabic dialects and in mostly assimilated Judaeo-Yemeni dialects, the natural, geo-political, economic, and socio-cultural history of Muslim Yemen. It is also an account of the religious inter- and intra-socio-cultural and economic everyday life of the ancient Jewish communities who lived as dhimmis under Muslim rule until their mass emigration to Israel in 1948, leaving behind 5,000 co-religionists. The dictionary is based on about 300 printed and ms sources painstakingly consulted in various libraries all over the world, and many Yemeni language informants now residing in Israel. The text of every single item is adduced, mostly in context, with reference to ms., or book, page, line, or note, and to classical and foreign etymologies. Particular attention has been paid to the dictionaries of Lane and Dozy. This is a milestone in Arabic lexicography, complementing Dozy's Supplement aux dictionnaires arabes, and opening up a complete new area sorely missing in the field of Arabic Studies.

A Poignant Look at Chinese Buddhism.......2000-11-12
This story of a Buddhist monk search for his place in the wheel of life is candidly written and enjoyable. Chen-hua has very interesting things to say about the practice of Buddhism in China. He finds abuses of power at several of the monasteries he visits. A must read for someone looking for an introduction to Chinese Buddhist doctrine and principle.
