"Coastal Plants from Cape Cod to Cape Canaveral" is a wonderful addition to the botanical literature! For both novices and confirmed botanists, this book provides a great look at the plants of the Atlantic Coast. As someone who knows little about plants, this book provided me with clear and informative descriptions that I could easily use to identify the plants in my area. Obviously meticulously researched, this book is the first to provide such comprehensive coverage of the topic. The photographs are beautiful, helping to illustrate both the plants and their associated habitats. I highly recommend this book both to own and to give as a gift!

This is a strong guide for active, nature-loving travellers but also includes information on Internet cafes, bicycle rentals, and the bus system in San Juan. We especially appreciated the list of unusual accommodations. Our favorite was Casa Cubuy on the south side of El Yunque. We had a lovely and memorable stay at this guest house thanks to a friendly host, interesting guests, and stunning views of the rain forest. Other accommodations we enjoyed included Hotel Belgica in Ponce and Villa Cofresi, an affordable resort in Rincon. The book also includes detailed information on the Museo de Arte de Puerto Rico in San Juan, live music spots, and the Arecibo Observatory. The volume shortchanges the striking Rio Camuy Cave Park and lists Old San Juan attractions in a confusing order, but it has interesting extras, such as the blurb about the curious Boiling Nuclear Superheater in Rincon and an explanation of a local pirate, Roberto Cofresi. The concise road maps helped us navigate smaller highways while the hiking maps for the Guanica Forest Reserve and El Yunque helped us guestimate the time needed for an adequate visit. We were especially glad we didn't miss the Bahia Fosforescente (Phosphorescent Bay). The tabs along the edge of the book (south coast, etc.), made for particularly quick reference.

We were fairly disappointed with this book. True, although the information was a bit old (and some incorrect), it was satisfactory. But we had used Adventure Guide to Puerto Rico by Harry S. Pariser and this was supposed to be a new edition. However, much of the information that made the other book so enjoyable was missing. We did discover that Harry S. Pariser has a new guidebook, Explore Puerto Rico. We got this guide in time for our trip and used it as well. It was much more compact and had new information in it. It has much better maps and has more information than the previous editions. We found it to be the best guide!

Pariser's Adventure Guides are among my favorites, well researched and detailed. They always include helpful facts, the chapters on history and culture make excellent reading, and the practical details on each town and area are filled with insightful tips and tidbits.

Do NOT buy this book, it STINKS!!.......1999-09-17

I have never become so angry reading a book about my home as I became while reading this one. The book is full of insults and frankly,lies! I actually wonder if Mr.Pariser has visited the island. He put down everything,(even "the poor food")and made it seem like we are a miseducated, inferior people. His comments on how women are treated was so far from the truth it was almost hilarious. I have lived on this island all my life (in Mayaguez), and have yet to see a naked little boy running around, I am a devout Catholic and as many times as I have attended Mass, I NEVER witnessed any sort of "african ritual" during it. This book is the biggest waste of money ever, it would be better spent sending Mr. Pariser to Puerto Rico, so he could go, learn, and get to know its people, its beauty and everything that makes it "La Isla Boriquen". I gave it one star because zero stars was not an option.

Texts and Contexts is concerned with the development of Pacific Islands history as a specialization in its own right. Specifically, this volume examines the foundational texts that pioneered and consolidated the new subdiscipline and served as the building blocks and stepping stone for further developments in the field. The earliest text put under the microscope is Ralph Kuykendall's first volume of The Hawaiian Kingdom (1938) and the most recent is Bernard Smith's Imagining the Pacific (1992). Thirty-three other texts, all of which represent defining points in the development of Pacific Islands historiography, are examined.

Much more than retrospective appraisals of the foundational texts, the individual chapters consider a text or complimentary texts within the context of the time of writing and gauge what ongoing influence they exerted. In some cases they suggest how a particular text has been superseded by subsequent work that breaks new conceptual ground in the ongoing process of revisionism. The chapters not only assess each text in the context of its times but the context of the text's author, demonstrating that historians are not neutral observers but work within, or react against, the political and intellectual climate of which they are a part.

Texts and Contexts reconnects historians of the Pacific Islands to the history and historiography of their specialization. A by-product of the present-mindedness of contemporary Pacific history is a lack of awareness of intellectual roots and a tendency to disregard the older foundation texts. This volume will be a timely reminder that Pacific Islands historiography has its own history—one that is relevant to contemporary intellectual concerns. It provides a pointed reminder that no one methodology or theory holds the key to the riddle that is history.

"Whippet" by Juliette Cunliffe is a wonderful book. It goes into great detail about history, owning, training, puppies, and care. Very comprehensive. What I love most about it is the visual appeal. It's a hard back, and the photographs within it are gorgeous - all color, with some really stunning Whippets. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to know more about Whippets, and enjoys looking at photos of this amazing breed!
