Not bad, but..........2006-03-10

If you buy this guide, don't bother buying Frommer's Hawaii 2006. Most of it is word for word.

Frommer's Guides are really helpful........2006-01-08

I have been very fortunate. I have had the oportunity to visit Hawai'i three times: The Big Island once, and Maui twice. I used a prevoius edition of this Frommer's Guide for a lot of my planning.

I like the listings of inexpensive hotels, B&B's, restaurants and activities in the book. Inexpensive does not mean poor quality. I have never been disappointed when following the advice in the Guide. I also enjoy the recommendations and maps included.

I find the Frommer's Guides to be very helpful, and have used other Frommer's Guides for trip planning: The Canadian Rockies, New Mexico, Yellowstone National Park, Florida for $ a Day, and San Francisco to name a few. They are a good starting point for planning a vacation.

Not great, but a good start.......2004-12-08

Overall a pretty good guide to the islands. However, I did have a few complaints:
Some of the places off the beaten path were not well described in terms of directions (and if not for helpful locals, I never would have reached them)
Restaurant data was often out of date (restaurant closed or completely redone), and poorer restaurants were sometimes recommended while the better ones were left off.
I was able to find a lot of better deals (or found out after the fact about better deals available) than listed in the book.
If you know nothing about Hawaii, it's a good bood to have. I will look for a different guide for my next trip.

Very Useful.......2003-06-27

On my trips to the Islands, I've found this book to be an excellent source of hotel, B&B, and restaurant recommendations. It is not the best overall guide, but it IS the best source of info for the above items. I've found that by taking this book along with the Lonely Planet (which is the best overall guide but is weak on lodging & restaurants) I have all the info I need to plan & enjoy my vacations to Hawaii.

I've used this book for travel to Maui, Kauai, and the Big Island, and have never found any of the reviews to be far off base. Highly recommended!

Pictures DO say a 1000 words - this is a great book!.......2000-04-26

After thinking about purchasing an African Grey for almost a year, I picked up this book at the recommendation of the owner of an exotic bird shop - "an excellent overview of the African Grey." I wanted to get an education before deciding to purchase a pet that could well out-live me. Responsibility equal or greater than to being a parent (since most children eventually move out of the nest...)!

The book provided an excellent overview of this fabulous bird species, including their history, tips on raising, feeding, housing, breeding, caring for them etc. The book was very easy to read and full of very useful information.

The book is printed on quality paper, with a quality binding. The professionally taken photographs are outstanding. The printing technique of the book makes them look like actual glossy photographs - glued into the book! As a bibliophile with thousands of books, and an amateur photographer - I can honestly say I've never encountered such a well-printed book! The pictures alone are worth the price.

The book positively influenced my decision to add another member to my family - an African Grey Parrot.

The pictures are wonderful in this book. Lets face it, we buy a book as much for its wonderful photos as we do for the literture that it contains. It is a must have book for all of us owned by an African Grey Parrot.

I found this book to be very informative having just become a "mommy bird" myself. The author gave great detail of what to expect of an African Gray Parrot; their needs, likes, and dislikes. The book also covered some very important safety matters and health issues. Even though I don't choose to house my gray in an outside aviary, I became engrossed in the section on "housing" which provided many tips and techniques to creating a safe environment for any bird to inhabit.

I thought that, because our Gray was successfully hand-fed and weaned by us, we knew all there was to know about these beautiful parrots. This book helped to fill me in with the use of easy to understand wording and beautiful photographs.

If you are thinking about purchasing an African Gray Parrot or, if you already own one, this book will help you to understand what your pet will need to live a safe and happy life with you.

This book deals with the settlement of te Companions outside Medina, and their involvement in the battle of siffīn, the battle that tore the early Muslim community apart. Based on five major biographical dictionaries written by the traditionists (ahl al-ḥadīth) of the 9th - 12th centuries, two lists are made: that of the Companions who settled in Iraq, Syria and Egypt, and that of those who were involved in the battle. Comparing the background of these two groups of Companions, the volume analyzes dividing line between the two camps. The use of a quantitative approach, and the use of the traditionists' works as the main source in the historical study of classical Islam is an important contribution to the book.

Remarkable work.......2007-03-17

Fuad Jabali has written on a subject which has immense importance in islamic history.Despite this, few works in english have been dedicated to this event and none so far [ as far as i know ] on the attitude of companions in this conflict.There was a great need for a work like this since both sunni and shia books in english rarely mention the minor companions and are obsessed with either a few major ones[sunnis] or Ahlulbayt[shias].

Prof. Jabali writes without sectarian bias and uses the most authentic biographies avalible.His recording the exact arabic expressions used in the primary texts also helps greatly.Use of tables although inconvenient is helpful when comparing between different comapnion groups.It also explodes many popular myths like shia propoganda claiming that companions abandoned Ali and the sunnis claiming that very few sahaba participated in the conflict.
My suggestion would be to add to this book esp. appendix VIII references about their political inclinations from other books of history that would give a more complete picture
e.g Hajjaj b Amr was a spy of Ali in Egypt and an envoy to syria , also a poet who wrote on his behalf
Abu Qatada in Tabari is mentioned as giving support to Ali in Medina

Best to read it with Madelung's "succession to Muhammad" which gives a great account of events during the reign of Ameer-ul-momineen Ali ibn AbiTalib.

A sort of "Everyman" of loathsome fanatics gone wild.......2006-08-28

This Cultural Revolution memoir is somewhat unique in that it is about an American born Chinese woman who returned to China before WWII and decided to stay after Mao came to power. She got tired of her philandering spendthrift husband, left him in Hong Kong, and decided to become an English teacher in Shanghai to be near her three grown children. Wen, Zengde was 66 years old in 1976 when the decade long Cultural Revolution started. There is another similar book also by an elderly woman, Nien Cheng, Life and Death in Shanghai, but I got board with it and didn't get past the first few chapters. Caught in a Tornado is a pretty fast read. Many Chinese committed suicide, especially the elderly who had less reason to endure the torment of the Cultural Revolution being so near the end of their lives, but Wen bravely stuck it out. She endured repeated beatings and interrogations, mostly from her students who served as the thought police, and survived. I suspect the ordeal shortened her life, however, because her sister who spent life in America lived to be at least 102. Wen passed away at 88. This book is short and provides a good overview of the sufferings and insanity that prevailed during the Cultural Revolution. Most appalling were the accounts of children turning on, and in some cases, killing parents and cannibalism in Guangxi Province; see the book Scarlet Memorial; read it on an empty stomach and keep in mind that the atrocities were mostly committed by ignorant peasants absent religious beliefs.

The parallels between Mao's China and Afghanistan under the Taliban are pretty striking. Change China to Afghanistan, Mao to Allah, Mao's red book of quotations to the Qu'ran, and the Red Guards to the Taliban. The Four Olds could be men without beards, women unveiled, music and movies, schools other than madrasas, and any book besides the Qu'ran. In both cases schools were shut down and only one subject was allowed to be studied; in Afghanistan it was the Qu'ran (the Taliban's interpretation) and in China it was Mao's book of quotations. Both the Red Guards and the Taliban were able to break into any home anytime and destroy or confiscate items deemed counter-revolutionary or un-Islamic. Those perceived as not complying with the extremists, physically or mentally, were beaten, imprisoned, and sometimes murdered. The Red Guards attacked those in western dress, especially women with "unrevolutionary" bourgeois hair styles and make up. The Taliban did the same thing to women who dared to show their hair, faces, or leave the house without a male relative escort. They also attacked men for not having foot long beards. The only difference is that membership in the Red Guards, while restricted by class background, was open to both genders.
