Made me LOVE ferns............2004-02-05
I have been interested in Trans-Pecos plants for over 20 years but have been terrified by the prospect of learning how to identify them by species. After one hour with this book I am 'fern savvy' and really enjoy identifying ferns in the field. It is very easy to read and understand, the technical terms are very clearly explained, the illustrations are excellent and I don't get frustrated and confused. I bought one for myself and then bought a second one to keep in my truck all the time and then bought 2 more for my job and my employee! Worth twice the money (don't raise the price!)

To look at a fern is to travel back in time. Ferns date from over 300 million years ago, long before the appearance of the first flowering plant. Although I knew nothing of this remarkable ancestry when at a young age I saw my first ferns in the forests of Breton Woods, their delicate beauty nonetheless captivated my imagination. My childhood fascination with ferns was hardly unique, however. People have been attracted to ferns for some time. During the 19th Century, for instance, nothing less than a fern craze sprouted up in England, where suddenly once wild ferns were abundantly cultivated in gardens, purchased as indoor potted plants, and replicated in ornamental designs on numerous household items.*
When I arrived in Austin in 1969, whatever fern-desire I may have harbored soon withered in the heat. Although my first Austin home was located on a creek site, all the land surrounding it was caliche-hardly ideal for ferns or much else. Ferns, I had always observed, thrive in a shady, moist habitat. It was not until many years later when an acquaintance of my daughter gifted us with ebony spleenwort (Asplenium platyneuron) that my fondness for ferns revived. While this Texas native plant may not be as aesthetically appealing as the more delicately textured wood fern (Thelypteris kunthii), it is both hardy and drought tolerant. I have become very attached to ebony spleenwort. Planted along the north side of my home's foundation, it has thrived, even remaining green throughout every winter. After a protracted stretch of heat and drought, it signals the need for some water by yellowing slightly.
That there is yet more hope for Texas fern lovers who live in such dry places is evident in Sharon C. Yarborough and A. Michael Powell's new book. It identifies many native pteridophytes adapted to the arid conditions of the Trans-Pecos region-that Maine-sized western part of our state situated between the Rio Grande and the Pecos rivers where the average annual rainfall is a mere 12 inches. One of the intentions behind this book, in fact, is to promote the ferns of this locale as suitable candidates for xeriscaped home gardens.
The Trans-Pecos ferns conserve water by producing hair-shaded fronds somewhat smaller in size than average. Some of these plants will wither after a long period of dryness, and yet these very same seemingly dead flora will immediately green up again whenever water becomes available. It is likely, moreover, that these plants reproduce more by asexual means-vegetative buds forming on a tiny heart-shaped prothallus that normally produces eggs and sperm on its underside when moisture is present. Fern reproduction is a curious business, in any event, and the authors of Fern and Fern Allies do very well explaining the intricate process so that it can be easily understood by lay readers.
Including spikemosses, horsetails and scouring rushes, this attractive field guide provides detailed keys designed to facilitate plant identification in the wild. Besides useful information concerning the floral morphology and habitat conditions of Trans-Pecos pteridophytes, Yarborough and Powell provide 37 line drawings. In the matter of fern identification such detailed drawings are more helpful than photographs.
A comparison with David L. Jones's Encyclopedia of Ferns and Boughton Cobb's A Field Guide to the Ferns, in the Peterson series, provides another measure of the value of Ferns and Fern Allies. Of the 15 examples in the new book of members of Cheilanthes, the largest genus of the maidenhair fern family, only 3 appear in Cox's book and only 2 in Jones's volume. Similarly, of the 11 members of Selaginellaceae (the spikemoss family) described in Fern and Fern Allies, 2 are included in Jones's work and none in Cobb's guide. As these statistics and results of a comparative review of the remaining plants both suggest, Fern and Fern Allies is as valuable as it is handy.
What an invitation to adventure Yarborough and Powell's book provides. Like several columbines native to the same region, many of the Trans-Pecos ferns are hidden in unusual places. To be seen they must be searched out. And, as the authors note, "there are probably more rare treasures to be found in certain microhabitats" of that area of Texas. Let's hope so, and let's hope, too, that native plant nurseries will make some of these arid-adapted ferns available for our home garden landscapes.

Good for choosing schools, not scholarships.......1999-01-18
I was looking for a good source for scholarships and grants for art and design students that could be used at the school of your choice. This book turned out to be a comprehensive list of all the art programs in schools in the US, and the scholarships that they offer. There was not info about how to apply directly to the scholarships, and/or if they were applicable to other schools. Bottom line: If you haven't chosen a school, it may help you, but it's of no use if you are already enrolled ( you can then get info about aid directly from your F/A office). I am still looking for a good list of art and design specific scholarships, and would appreciate any leads......

Excellent book useful for the do it yourself gardener........1999-06-19
If you have a sunny, shady, wet, sloped or dry location this book has plans for them all. It is useful in designing your own garden or simply use one of the many plans provided. The color photographs are extensive and include complete gardens so you can see how different plants look together. This book takes the guess work out by providing the size, color(s), bloom time and growing zones for each plant reviewed. There is also some information on annuals, bulbs and shrubs that work well in a prennial garden. There are even tips on attracting butterflies to your garden. Overall, this book is full of great ideas for any type of garden you may be planning.

This book presents a good inside look at the 1989 democracy movement from the viewpoint of a key student leader. The reader learns about some aspects of the movement that have not been widely publicized, including the trials and tribulations of one of the principal organizers of the movement.
Also, a good documentary film about the 1989 Tiananmen Square protests is Carma Hinton's "The Gate of Heavenly Peace." A condensed version of this film was broadcast on PBS Frontline in 1996.

I just watched the recent Frontline about Tank Man, the man who bravely defied the line of tanks in Beijing, and went to Amazon to find books about the subject. Up came this book, among others, and I remember almost throwing it across the room over ten years ago when I read it. You have a guy who escaped, knew a few people involved, and whose only personal involvement is from the outside. He had no balls, and never dared risk himself. Sure, he knows the figureheads, the history, and can write about what happened as if was there. But he was hiding in his room, making himself out to be a hero. If you want to read a book with the only suspense being whether to finish it or not, then this is the one.

Too many history books deal in dry facts. This book tells the story of China and what led up to the Tiananmen Square massacre from the point of view of one young student who was pulled, sometimes against his will, into the thick of the political arena. I found it fascinating!
A students account of the events leading up to June 1989.......1998-12-29
I found this book very informative about the events leading up to the Tiananmen Square occupation by the students and workers in June of 1989. Since traveling for one month in China this past year, I have been reading alot of personal accounts on China by people who have escaped or left the country. This was a nice change; a book speaking of the efforts by the citizens to change the way things are there and by peaceful means. This book really makes one appreciate the freedoms and democracy that we take for granted in this country.
Moving story of Chinese family life and the student movement.......1998-04-27
There are two wonderful things about this book: first, Shen Tong's charming account of life growing up in Beijing in an exceptional Chinese family; and then the deeply moving story of the growth of the student movement and its tragic surpression. The courage of the students, and later people from all walks of life, in their struggle for a more open society is very impressive. This book should not be out of print.

Book Description
Theobald Smith (1859-1934) is widely considered to be America's first significant medical scientist and the world's leading comparative pathologist. Entering the new field of infectious diseases as a young medical graduate, his research in bacteriology, immunology, and parasitology produced many important and basic discoveries. His most significant accomplishment was proving for the first time that an infectious disease could be transmitted by an arthropod agent. He also made significant discoveries on anaphylaxis, vaccine production, bacterial variation, and a host of other methods and diseases. His work on hog cholera led to the selection of the paratyphoid species causing enteric fever as the prototype of the eponymous Salmonella genus, mistakenly named for his chief at the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Daniel Salmon, who first reported the discovery in 1886, although the work was undertaken by Smith alone.
In 1895, Smith began a twenty-year career as teacher and researcher at the Harvard Medical School and director of the biological laboratory at the Massachusetts State Board of Health. In 1902, when the Rockefeller Institute for Medical Research was founded, he was offered but declined its directorship; however, in 1914, when the Institute established a division of animal pathology, he became director of its research division. Suppressing the Diseases of Animals and Man, the first book-length biography of Smith to appear in print, is based primarily on personal papers and correspondence that have remained in the possession of his family until now.

Pity the trees that died for this book..........2007-02-28
The other reviews were right on target. I'll add: little substance, spelling/proofreading errors, unfocused photos, and very little useful information. I'm not impressed and I'm getting my money back. The only marginally useful part was the list of brand-name products and tools at the end. For a momma committed to my daughter's natural hair health, this book has way too much about chemical treatments.
My most used references: It's All Good Hair (Michele N.K. Collision) and Kinki Kreations (Jena Renee Williams). This just isn't worth the shelf space on my bookshelves.
Problem Print.......2006-08-17
This book has several good points, however it was hard to keep focused due to bad printing. There were several pages with light print. This made it diffcult to follow the book. I know errors can happen, however it wouldn't hurt to have a preview staff on hand.

Self Hate and African American Women.......2006-03-17
Upon buying this book I was hoping to find new and easy styles for natural African textured hair. I was EXTREMELY upset by several suggestion to chemically treat a CHILD'S hair if it is not what this ridiculous author considers "angel" hair. I was also under the impression that in this day and age, African American women were becoming more comfortable and loving of ourselves naturally, and I am highly dissapointed to see otherwise. I would like a book that caters to BLACK hair. Not black people who want white hair. For the biracial women that think this book is a dream come true, mark these words: Your child will probably have a hurdle to jump being biracial in a world that demands that we define ourselves as it is. Don't subject your child to further self scrutiny by teaching them to hate their physical attributes. If you don't want black/biracial children-and all that comes with it, don't choose black partners.
Useless.......2006-03-13
I wanted a book that would show in detail how to do different styles. This book only contained a brief description on braids and cornrows. I also did not like the author recommending straighteners for kinky hair. I wanted a book on how to work with my daughter's natural hair, not on how to change it.

Maggie Oster's book has helped me in making the most tasty and beautiful herbal vinegars ever. I was stuck in the boring "chive blossom vinegar" or "Tarragon Vinegar" with no variations. After I followed a couple of Maggie's recipes, I livened up my meals immensely! Next, I'm going to try her "Dill-Burnet Cream Dressing" for my salad. It has only 5 ingredients, and they are very easy to find! This book discusses many different types of vinegars (malt, rice, cider, distilled, cane, etc), so I can decide which is best for the type of herbs I want to add. Have you ever tasted raspberry vinegar on a salad in a gourmet restaurant? It's in here! There are many recipes in this great book! Last year, I made Garlic, jalapeno, and black peppercorn vinegar, and my friends wanted the only bottle I made! This year, I'm making more to share.

Good value! This book has given me many ideas for new and revived products.
Maggie gives a good background history of vinegar and its manufacture, then includes heaps of recipes for dressings, sauces, vegetables and main courses etc. Additionally she gives suggestions for its use around the home and in tonics and home remedies.
I was impressed, and believe you will appreciate the book too!

Zoology as it was never taught at my school . . ........1997-02-22
"Wild Sex" manages to be both an extremely entertaining and a most informative pop-zoology text. Often the wild behavior of the other creatures inhabiting this planet has been completely misconstrued, and erroneously anthropomorhisied. Sexual behavior is viewed in context, starting with the question "why sex evolved". The text is enlivened is with many surprising examples of extreme behavior and bizarre adaptations, and clarified with some 40 black and white illustrations.
Rape, murder and other acts which in a human society would be classified as "crimes of passion" are not quite the rare aberrations in nature we have been lead to believe. After reading Ms Windybanks excellent book I can no longer view the duckpond in our local park in the with the equanimity I once did.

SUPERB look at all aspects of Gardening in America.......2000-05-19
As far as I know, this is the FIRST history of the family garden, also known as the "kitchen" garden and its evolution from a purely practical, food garden to community gardens, self-help programs, etc. From Thomas Jefferson to modern day gardening, this book has it all! Great read, wonderful find for gardeners.

History from a woman's perspective.......2007-05-07
Being an avid reader, I rarely read a woman's perspective on history, but Pauline Wengeroff's story opened my eyes to Jewish history from a totally different viewpoint. The story is magnificent and a must for independent minded women of any age. People of the twenty-first century will be able to identify easily with a woman of the 1840-1860's. Conditions of life change, but people don't.
