Ho-hum pretty. Doesn't do the region justice........2006-11-27

I took this coffee-table photo book out of the library once I realized that one of the featured "most beautiful villages" in New England was Stonington, Maine -- where I lived for nearly seven years. I wanted to see what they chose to show about the Deer Isle area because hey, *I* knew what made the area so gorgeous. If they could capture Stonington, perhaps they could also bring to life the beauty of the other villages covered -- from Essex, CT to Grafton, VT to Nantucket, MA.

To my disappointment, though, the photographers chose rather humdrum locations to highlight. Nothing here is _bad_, mind you. The photos are perfectly nice. There's plenty of predictable photos of clapboard buildings and small town churches and autumn leaves. But it's the predictability that makes this worth flipping through once... and only once. It's as though you had purchased large-format postcards from the ordinary gift shoppe -- not captured something unique and beautiful.

I'm a little astonished that this book has so many pictures of the (admittedly beautiful) autumn leaves in New England (that is, they're beautiful if they don't make you think "Oh geez we'd better top off the heating oil"). But not a single picture of the mountain lupine blooming in the spring that, in my opinion, is far prettier. You'll see several inoffensive photos of boats tied up at the dock at sunset... but almost nothing that reflects the sense of community that can make small-town living so precious.

I'd hoped that this book would bring back a tiny bit of my years on Deer Isle. Alas... I'll have to dig out my own photos for that.

This is a book to read on a plane to Paris!.......2006-05-11

This is a great read, particularly if you've been to Paris or are going. It truly gives you a different view of the city. The author is living on a houseboat on the Seine and decides to travel the river from "start" to "finish". Some great characters add to the account of the journey and some interesting history emerges along the way too. I also got a vivid feel for what it must be like without having to actually endure the discomforts!

Not what its cracked up to be..........2005-04-13

If you are interested in the plight of peniche and barge owners on the Seine(in the 1990's), and if you want some historical anecdotes culled from other authors, and info on the amount of tonnage that moves up and down the Seine, floods and navigability issues, then this is the book for you. This is definitely not an idyllic look at living on the Seine. A lot of the traveling between locations is done by car, and once on a Tourist Cruise line. The characters are mostly limited to people explaining the plight of the bargees and their possible future on the river. If you are looking for a Peter Mayle-style book, this isn't it. There are a few charming and funny moments in the first part of the book that lead you to believe that you are in for a "tour" of the river, it's food, beauty and local characters. Don't be fooled. I have spent many hours walking the the Paris Seine and there is definitely more romance than is captured in this book. Overall the book is very informative but not what the reviews lead to expect.

Better than being there.......2001-09-04

Actually living on a boat on the Seine is a pain in the backside with leaks, breakdowns and constant maintenance. *Reading* about living on a boat on the Seine is, however, better than being there. Even though this is non-fiction, colorful characters fill the pages. If you love France, you'll love this book about the river through its heart. Rosenblum's writing is supple and never gets in the way.

Timeless idylls.......2004-03-20

On Sundays, Paris comes to a halt and Parisians take time to celebrate, well, that they're Parisians. In the spring and summer, especially, outdoor leisure predominates, and the romantic illusions that we Americans treasure of the City of Lights come closest to being reality.

At least, that's how this book's Introduction by Noël Simsolo paints it. And I'm inclined to believe him. Certainly, Willy Ronis' very impressive photography seems to support the argument. Or, more precisely, the argument seems to support Ronis' images, since it's the images that this book is about. Ronis is an important and skilled photographer, and the Smithsonian and Motta Editore of Milan have done a fine job in selecting four dozen of his images for this book. They're a great portrayal of Paris at rest. And because the images are monochromatic, the fact that they span four decades (1947 to 1993) can easily be forgotten. Classic Paris always seems to be in black and white anyway, and Ronis' timeless, seductive work draws us in easily.

Great For Those New To The Longhaired Felis Domesticus.......2004-09-21

The longhaired "Felis domesticus," or house cat, is a wonderful animal companion. This little book written by a top breeder of longhairs (and who is married to a veterinarian) is enormously useful for people new to longhaired cats. I generally agree with the author on most issues (although I think more behavior is breed-linked than she does), and find this book most useful in the pre-cat ownership stage. She has an excellent section on considerations necessary before adopting a new cat.

Her advice and information is presented in an easy to understand manner, but most of this will be known by experienced cat owners already. People who have never owned a cat before (and particularly those considering a Persian or other longhaired cat) should definitely read this book. If you have had cats for a while, there is probably little new information to be learned here, although many of the illustrations are nice. One key to take away from this book is that while longhairs may look more glamorous than shorthair cats, the upkeep on a longhaired cat is significantly greater, particularly in the grooming department. Having said that, I think they are totally worth the extra effort.

She discusses longhairs and breeds (I am partial to neutered male Persians and Maine Coons myself), but emphasizes that all cats are individuals with unique personalities. I agree with her, but want to add my own comment on top of hers: if you want a pet, you will gain nothing by having a pedigreed cat (in fact they may be less healthy because of greater inbreeding, though not necessarily). Having said that, please consider rescuing a cat from your local shelter. If you want to show or breed the cat, she gives some basic information on this as well.

Cats make wonderful companions, and I highly recommend this book for those interested in getting their first cat, while more experienced cat owners can probably safely skip it, although it still makes a nice reference.

Need for the book.......2007-05-15

As beginning collector it was difficult to get an insight in what exactly was produced, when and what varieties exist.
This book fills the gap to a large extend, providing a lot of information. The illustrations/lay out are/is sometimes what eratic, and one example of a factory drawing would be nice, but so many eats up a lot of space, which might have been used for other purposes. However, the provides an excellent overview of all aspects of Dinky, and it is well worth its money.

Not Quite a Tour de Force.......1999-12-04

The positive thing about this book is that it is dedicated to its subject - and therefore unique, as far as I can see. However, it may have become something of an anachronism. It could benefit from its own website! Because the prices can never be as current as those from on-line auctions. It could also benefit from depicting pictures of the models in chronological sequence for easier reference and within typological groups like cars, military etc. The shots used appear to be from a collection and the groupings random. Sorry Edward, but you need updating old son

A very handsome catalogue.......1998-09-01

This is a very handsome and useful book, in which all models made by Dinky Toys, even from Hong Kong ,are displayed in color.With exception of the airplanes and some of the extraordinary sets, the models are not photographed in detail. Much information about the models is not given (in my opinion not necessary). At the end, prices are given, but these will certainly vary depending on the state of the model and the availability of an original box. The format of the book is such, that it is very easy to take it with you in your pocket.

No one knows Dinky like Mike Richardson, that's for sure. Plenty of detail and great photos on all the models included---the problem is that this only covers the British models and omits the French models from the same era. That's like writing a book about baseball but only including the American league. Good, but incomplete.

Beautiful Photo's - But Just too small.......2000-08-18

This cloth bound book displays some of Beken's best work, the only reason I give it three stars is that it is just too small. The beautiful sepia colours of his art and majestic sailing ships of the bygone era are not done justice by the tiny reproductions in this work, considering its' cost.

At 8" x 5" it is almost too small to be a coffee table book.

Anyway, the book displays the famous yachts of the era from the 1880's to pre-WWII with small dialogs before each chapter to explain the stage and history of sailing at Cowes in each era, from the turn of the century (1800-1900), pre-WWI, Post WWI, pre WWII. It gives little history of the photographer, and his methods.

If you own any Bekken prints, it will hold a little interest to you, but you will be disappointed in a album that could have been done so much better.
