Great Balance of Content and Detail.......2004-07-06

I used this book on a trip a couple of years ago and it was very valuable. The paper is a light grade so while the book is thick it is not heavy. If you are in a town of any decent size then there is info on what to eat, see, and where to stay. The maps are good and suggestions are too. I've read quite a few travel guides over the years and this series may be the best all around and best laid out of any of them. You might want to read more details before you leave but this is the one to carry along on the trip. I have not seen any new editions but I hope Foder's continues with this series.

Interestingly Written History About The English Civil War of 1642-9.......2006-08-26

From about 1642 to 1649 there was a terrible Civil War in England. Over 200,000 people lost their lives either from battles, civilians being harmed by soldiers foraging for food and supplies and gold, or from sickness such as the plague. Eventually King Charles The First was beheaded. England became a "Republic" with power of the purse strings in The House of Commons that was comprised of elected representatives of the English People. The Divine Right of kings to do as they pleased came to and end in England. Thus, this was a big step forward in giving freedom and human rights to common people. I suppose the government of The USA benefited from the example. However, the "human rights of the people" were bought at a terrible price in lost lives and human misery in England. It's too bad there couldn't have been a less bloody and painful way to accomplish the same end. The book itself is very well written. You will enjoy "the story". Recommended.
Afterthought: The Roundheads were mostly "Protestants" and the "Royals" were mostly Catholic---both nominal "Christians". Christianity teaches what?......"love your enemy" and "thou shalt not kill"...so were ANY of the participants "true Christians"? I think not! Email Boland7214@aol.co

This book is truly a wonderful book for any one involved with Yorkshire Terriers. It gives plenty of information on its history, so maybe by understanding it, you'll know your Yorkie a little better. Great tips on grooming, show, breeding, obedience, and many other things about your Yorkie. I think this is a wonderful book and wouldn't trade it for the world.

I would recommnend this title, there are a lot of pictures, and therefore a bit less written information, but on the whole I think this book is worth buying.

This book is a very good resource for everybody who wants to get informed about lilies in general. It's biggest advantage is it's very accessible language, even beginners won't have a problem to understand. It covers all important topics and is richly illustrated, though it sometimes suffers a bit of the "coffee-tablebook-syndrome".

It is a perfect work for beginners and advanced hobbyists who want to be well informed, but don't intend to use much too advanced techniques. For those it is quite usable and a very valuable source of information. Only experienced collectors and professionals might sometimes feel a bit unsatisfied.

The Text of Matthew in the Writings of Basil of Caesarea explores from a text-critical point of view the text of the First Gospel used by Basil, a prolific and influential fourth-century Christian writer who abundantly quoted the Bible. The book lists all quotations and significant allusions made to the First Gospel and compares these to twenty-one ancient Greek and Latin manuscripts to determine and assess the textual affinities of Basil's text of Matthew. The book discusses the development of the Byzantine text type and argues that Basil's text of Matthew represents its earliest known witness.

Mencken remembered as "so rotten, it smelled like a billion polecats"; the now defunct department stores at Howard and Lexington Streets; the Italianate Bromo Seltzer tower topped with the revolving blue bottle that had to be removed in 1936; the Patterson Park pagoda; the Shot Tower; Memorial Stadium in its shiny 1954 modernity and old, wooden Municipal Stadium, its predecessor; well-known restaurants and bars that have disappeared, like the famous Miller Brothers, Jimmy Wu's New China Inn, and Benny's, shown here full of servicemen and girls in 1945; long-gone amusement parks like Gwynn Oak, Carlin's, and the earlier Electric Park; and, of course, the Block.

Memoirs To Savor.......2001-04-11

This book is a work to savor, rich with stories, lore, wisdom, e.g., the tale of Grand-Uncle Three and his coffin, the man who put rat's meat in egg noodle soup (ugh!), the description of Ms. Tham's bossy paternal grandmother, the author's coming to terms with the death of her younger sister (Jadegreen Plumblossom) and father, and so much more. I wasn't left at a distance by the fact that the memoirs are about a girl growing up (i.e., would there be something that I as a male could relate to there?) because Ms. Tham captured so much that is universal. If she or the book were more akin to the Princess Nohran or Fadzillah whom she described in it (Ms. Tham was, at one point when she lived in Malaysia, a tutor in English and Mathematics to princesses in a royal family), i.e., bubbling over with fascination regarding the merits of Revlon versus Elizabeth Arden skin-care cosmetics, that would have been a turn-off. But not the beautiful rendering of the past that deals with family, love, marriage, death, mythology, and art that is in evidence throughout the memoirs.

Multi-cultural to the Umpty-Umpth.......2000-05-06

I've read (and own) all of Hilary Tham's books. Most of them are volumes of poetry, wise, lucid, direct, witty poems. In her poems, Hilary is a great story teller, so it should be no surprise that her first prose work, a memoire, is moving and rich. The material of her life is, in itself, intriguing: She's Chinese, but raised as part of a Chinese minority in Malaysia, married an American Peace Corp. member, converted to his faith and became active in her synagogue in the U.S. Besides her Chinese background (with its stew of Confusianism, Buddhism and Taoism) and her Judaism, she was educated in a Catholic school -- she "covers" a hell of a lot of culture. But apart from the interest of her unusual background, she has wry charm, humor, truthfulness, common sense and a warm, friendly presence in her work.
