Essential for anyone interested in Nepal.......2004-03-13

This collection of essays and excerpts about Nepal and her people greatly exceeded my expecations. The editor displayed refreshingly high standards when it came to picking which authors to include. The writing is of high quality, and the vast range of works included gives you an thorough, unvarnished look at all aspects of life and travel in Nepal. Taken together the entries accomplish the difficult task of helping the visitor-to--be know what it will FEEL like to be there.

You just don't get this kind of stuff out of guidebooks.

The book has enhanced my trip preparations and brought my excitement about going to Nepal to a fever pitch. I highly recommend this to anyone about to make a similar journey.

I hope to find more books in this series available for all the other countries on my travel wish list.

A charming cultural portrait of a fascinating land.......2001-03-24

Traveler's Tales is the postmodern guidebook. Instead of lists of iteneraries, temple admission prices and grainy photos, the authors of this book allow the reader to imagine Nepal in all of its tantalizing fullness. The excerpts selected range on topic and style, but all present unique aspects of the Nepali experience-- rural and urban, male and female, touristic and holistic. In opening the pages you can smell the spice markets, hear the chants of priests, feel the grinding poverty, inhale the crystalline Himalayan air and allow yourself to be carried down the narrow alleys of Pokhara. After reading Traveler's Tales: Nepal, I assue you you'll immediately run to Expedia to check fares to Kathmandu.

A great supplement to any travel book like Lonely planet!.......2000-08-01

I loved this book, it was a great travel book. This book gave me insights into the culture and beliefs of Nepal, not just places to stay or to eat like most travel books. All of the stories were unique and made me really excited to hop on a plane and travel there. With this book I know what to expect once I get there and know enough not to offend their culture as an American.

I recommend using this to supplement a Fromer's or Lonely planet travel book.

Reading this book is indeed a great experience. I am really thankful that people abroad have made the effort to introduce Nepal's romantic realities to the world. I am sure that anyone who wants to know about Nepal would definitely benefit from this book. I am glad that I bought this book and learnt so much about my own country. To be honest though being a native, I was not familiar with the panoromic details about Nepal that the book has captured. After reading various tales collected in the book I am inspired to visit those beautiful places and experience the joy myself.

Why I'm going back there again........1998-07-07

Why is Nepal so magical that people keep on coming back ? Well, you may find the answers after reading the wonderful collection of short stories. I liked it because the stories selected were, most importantly easy to read and short enough for busy people.Inside the 5 chapters you'll find writers like Peter Matthiesen (The Snow Leopard) and Manjushree Thapa (Meanderings in Mustang), both of whom were privileged enough to enter the forbidden lands I got so close to (I only got as far in as Kagbeni,Lower Mustang !). I found Broughton Coburn's (A Nosy neighbor) account of his encounter with a leech most enlightening and amusing. Tears flowed forth after reading Robert J Matthews's (A Simple Gift) and Allan Aistrope's (Virtue's Children), if you've been there you'll know why.Having gone trekking I'd certainly put Jack Bennett's (The Art of Walking) into good use the next time. In Susan Vreeland's (Do Buddhists Cry?), you get an insight of the selflessness of the native people there and you begin to wonder if we really are the more civilized ?. I thought that the addition of short quotes and highlights from other writers added in-between and at the end of each stories were nice, as at a glance you see how others fared in similar fates. My ambitions of writing a journal of my visit is out the window - I'll just share this book to anyone who wants to know how I felt exactly when I was there.Buy this book !

Useless as an historical source.......2002-07-24

What the text fails to mention is that this is NOT Jean-H-P Pouget's original illustrations, it is relatively new (and poor) pen drawings traced from the originals. Why? Because the original was strictly a pattern source book for jewelry, and most patterns seem to have been covered in faceted stones. These have now been redrawn as shapeless blobs in the motifs, and all details pretending to jewelry have been omitted. The result is ugly, style-less, and devoid of historical interest. Dover must have decided that the market was to narrow for a goldsmiths' guide, and tried to expand it to "Artists and Craftspeople" by redrawing the whole thing.
Maybe you can find some use for it if you need some very simple floral patterns to trace your woodcarving from, otherwise, stay clear. The poorest Dover book I've ever seen.

Cho Zhi (192-323) was the son of Cao Cao (155-220), the famous -- sometimes thought infamous -- adventurer, general and politician at the end of the Later Han dynasty (25-220). Cao Zhi was a younger son but had such great talent that there was at one time a prospect that he might become his father's heir. If that had happened he could have been a king. However, his elder brother, Cao Pi (187-226), became the heir and the two brothers' rivalry over this question had a major effect on Cao Zhi's life.

Their rivalry was probably aggravated by Cao Pi's jealousy of Cao Zhi's brilliance and greater poetic gifts, and possibly over a woman who, according to some stories, inspired one of Cao Zhi's greatest poems. After Cao Cao's death, China became formally divided into the Three Kingdoms which gave their name to that period of Chinese history. Many of the traditional stories in early Chinese novels and plays derived from that period. But, in all the stirring doings at the time -- the "Robin Hood" age of China -- Cao Zhi played little part. With all his gifts, his faults of character and the distrust of his brother, by now King of Wei, frustrated his chance of giving real service to the state. Many of his poems reflect that frustration.

Cao Zhi is, however, a far from unimportant figure in Chinese literary history. He lived at a time of division, of change and of constant warfare and popular distress. Buddhism was spreading fast and new poetical forms were coming into use. Cao Zhi is one of the first figures in Chinese history to be remembered as a poet alone, and not as an emperor, statesman or general who also wrote poetry. He also wrote essays which contained some of the earliest literary criticism of writers of his age. He was also renowned as a calligrapher -- and as a bon viveur. His life was in large part a tragedy of wasted gifts -- but he does not lack touches of comedy.

Beyond the dry second- and third-hand tellings of history are the real stories told by the real people-and it doesn't get much realer than Guibert of Nogent. He's arrogant, condescending, socially inept and has a weird fixation on his mother. Proof positive that men were messed up way before women's liberation hit the scene. I don't claim to be a historian. I've never read St. Augustine's Confessions, on which Guibert modeled his own work. I can't say for certain that Guibert wasn't your typical Medieval French monk, but I find it hard to believe that most monks had mothers who spent the latter part of their lives trying to recapture their virginity. But that's what's great about reading first-hand accounts, no "typicals" get in your way. For instance: How many third-hand historical texts would have a chapter that begins: "Since hardly anyone passed the bishop's corpse without casting at him some insult or curse and no one thought of burying him. . .?" Believe it or not, this type of image seems to be common in the literature of the time. Now if only we could work it into the popular conception of history, maybe we'd have a few less romanticizers telling us how society is falling to pieces.

Lots of pictures and very detailed descriptions of the process. He spends a lot of time on the technique. It's a very hard thing to do, but if you want to carve people, you must own this book.

Fine how to and esthetic guide to carving the figure in wood.......1999-01-25

Mr. Bradbury has written the best book I've seen for the woodworker that would like to do realistic full relief carving of the human figure. Having started out to do this myself (without the aid of his book) the very practical way that he approaches carving picked up for me right where I was stuck: I found that it was one thing to carve an abstract figure but quite another to carve one with a high degree of realism.

In multiple cases, for both full figure and busts and for both male and female subjects, he shows the process from initial photos or sketches through outlining, blanking, and all of the succeeding carving, sanding, and finishing steps. All of the steps are well and amply illustrated. There is no hiding on his part, either, with each step described along with his intended purpose for it. Comparing his finished product with the photos of the original subject shows that you are being taught by a master who makes you understand the objective of each step and how to do it.

This book definitely explains how to navigate the school from the teacher's point of view. Some good information- especially on IDEA and disabilities- right on. However, this book falls down when it gets into the political. It only briefly mentions controversial subjects (e.g. Vouchers) and then provides only one side to the issue (Teacher's Union side).

In high interest, easy to read style, Bob Chase shows you how schools think and work. You get an insider's view of school culture, and an understanding of all the myriad reasons why you, as a parent, don't always feel informed. Empowering and informative. He shows us all the ways we can love our children by embracing, understanding, and helping our child's public school. It needs a sequel, however, to more fully explain the role of the Board of Education, distinguish between PTA's, HSA's, and PTO's, the role of teacher unions, how the balance shifts between academic and vocational goals, the role of the federal department of education, and many more topics. A great start. I wish I'd had this book years ago, but it's never too late.

This book and others of the series bring together Sondheim's greatest works. It includes hard to find music like "I Remember" (from Evening Primrose) which makes this book a wonderful addition to any singer's collection. I recommend it to anyone and everyone!

Sondheim's Masterpieces.......2000-04-06

As a fanatical Sondheim lover and singer, this book was awonderful addition to my collection. Among some of his best earlytitles, this book includes songs like "I Remember", "Losing My Mind", and "Another Hundred People". These are wonderfully written pieces which deserve many books like this one. They are a joy to listen to and even more to play, and I hope everyone will enjoy this book as much as I do.

This was a difficult book for me to read. It is in the first person style. I can hear their voices. I did an interview three years ago. It is on tape. Yet i can not listen to it.. Such a difficult time in our youth, in our lives. I recommend this book. This one voice speaks for so many.

riveting especially for a child of a holocaust victim.......1999-11-08

it made quite an impact on me. emotionally draining. how Alina kept her sanity is remarkable. Stark did not try to editorialize. instead as painful as it was, he let her tell it in her own way, regardless of syntax. i have never read anything like it...in only three hours i experienced an unforgettable voice.
