        Book Description

The only comprehensive guide to western New York, from Niagara Falls to the western edge of the Finger Lakes.

Called the "Western Door" by the Seneca Indians, western New York is the Empire State's open secret. Here travelers will find Niagara Falls. And nearby, the Erie Canal ends its 300-mile trip as it empties into Lake Erie near Tonawanda. The "famous five" stair-step locks that carried the canal over the Niagara Escarpment at Lockport are still preserved near the Erie Canal Museum. Buffalo has the largest concentration of theaters and art galleries in the state outside of New York City. In Rochester, museums, cafés, and shopping abound. This book is the first comprehensive guide to this vast cultural, historic, and natural destination.

This guide also includes opinionated listings of inns, B&Bs, hotels, vacation cottages, and campgrounds; hundreds of dining recommendations, from roadside diners to four-star cuisine; up-to-date regional and downtown maps; an alphabetical "What's Where" subject guide to aid in trip planning; and handy icons that point out places of extra value, family- and pet-friendly establishments, wheelchair access, and popular wedding venues. 60 black & white photographs, 17 maps, index.

This was a quick read and provided a reasonable overview of collie ownership. This would provide excellent background for someone just beginning the dog search and wondering about breed history, general care, and an overview of temperament, behaviors, etc.

However, if you're looking for more of the ins and outs of dog ownership, I would suggest something with a little more content.

Although this author came highly recommended, I was not impressed with the content. The book should more accurately be titled a "dictionary", as it really didn't tell me how to fight insects or leaf curl -- It only defined what these problems were; not how to treat them..... organically.

                Book Description

The aim of organic gardening is simply to achieve the right balance between ecologically sound and environmentally friendly practice. If we create a healthy soil in which a wide variety of plants can flourish, we also establish a food chain in which predators and prey maintain a natural balance-and do much of the pest control for us. Plants want to grow-the organic gardener's task is to remove obstacles from their path. This means choosing the right plant for the right place; providing the right type of soil, the right temperature, and the right amount of moisture; and protecting those plants that need it in early life or in adverse conditions. In this comprehensive, easy-to-use guide-abundantly illustrated with color photos of his own garden-Bob Flowerdew shows you how to work with nature to make a garden that's both beautiful and bountiful. Among the author's previous books are The Companion Garden and The Complete Fruit Book.

                      Book Description

The unique character New York State's Capitol Building is explored in this volume. Four of America's leading photographers and Albany's leading man of letters throw the spotlight on this little-known landmark. Photographers William Clift, Stephen Shore, Judith Turner, and Dan Weaks turn their camera eye on this historical monument in celebration of its beauty. An introduction by Pulitzer Prize-winning author William Kennedy addresses the Capitol's history and Kennedy's own remembrances of its glory days. A preface by New York Governor Mario Cuomo, Warren M. Anderson, and Stanley Fink sets the tone of loving appreciation.

The diverse collection of images herein is a testament not only to the myriad fascinations which the building holds but to the flexibility and varied vocabulary of the photograph. The Capitol in Albany begins with Dan Weak's black-and-white composite photographs of the four facades. Weaks's images offer the most complete view of the Capitol extant, a view unavailable to the human eye from the street. Stephen Shore moves us inward with beautiful color images of the grand stairways that lead to the Capitol's many entrances. Once inside, William Clift photographs the anterooms and meeting rooms, bringing a delicacy of vision to bear on the ghosts of Albany's past. Finally, Judith Turner explores the structural details which distinguish the Capitol, rendering them with the simplicity of charcoal drawing.

In all, the Capitol is revealed to be both architecturally significant and rich in history. This volume speaks eloquently and convincingly of the building's beauty and the need for architectural and historical preservation.

A landmark work of architecture, the New York State Capitol Building in Albany has been a source of both pride and controversy since its inception in 1866. Like a medieval cathedral--and unlike most American architecture--the construction of the building stretched over more than three decades and several changes in popular taste. It bears the creative imprints of a half-dozen architects, and stands today as an amazing amalgam made from the stuff of both dreams and democracy.

The Capitol's history began during the Revolutionary War when, fleeing the British, legislators left their home base in New York City, and constantly shifted their meetings from Harlem to Fishkill, Kingston to Poughkeepsie and Albany. As bureaucracy would have it, mountains of paperwork accumulated, forcing the legislature to become less mobile. In 1797 a bill was passed designating Albany the capital. In 1804 it was decided that an official meeting house was needed for these, the most influential decision-makers in the Empire State. The cornerstone for the original capitol building was laid in 1806, on the top of State Street Hill in Albany, with Mayor Philip Schuyler Van Rensselaer in attendance. By 1863, the state government had outgrown its modest quarters several times over, and bigger, more lavish quarters were required. Two years of planning and debate ensued over a new capitol and whether it should be built in Albany. It was decided that it should and the new capitol rose up behind the old one.

As lawmakers changed, so did the tastemakers--and the architects they employed. The first round of building was marked by the collaboration of Thomas and Italian Renaissance architecture respectively. In 1876, with a new legislature in place, and financial appropriations wavering accordingly, Gilman withdrew and Fuller was dismissed. They were replaced by an advisory board containing Leopold Eidlitz, Henry H. Richardson and Frederick Law Olmsted, creator of New York's Central Park. Through this committee, Romanesque and French Renaissance touches were added to the previous styles. In 1883, Issac Perry was put in charge of the project. He completed the work of his predecessors and made a major addition to the edifice--the grand front staircase. Through it all, and despite the objections of architectural purists, the building developed into a unique and graceful marriage of styles. Today, with an extensive restoration underway, it stands as a monument to elegance, endurance, and the glory of New York State.

Memorable photos take you back to a wonderful time gone by. It is truly our great city on the Hudson. I HIGHLY recomend to all.

5 out of 5 stars A great and accurate history.......2000-03-29

The book has many beautiful pictures and may easily be dismissed as just another pictorial Chamber of Commerce celebration of a city's history, a "coffee-table book." But instead, it is a great and accurate account of a city built by Deutsch (Dutch & German) and Irish ethnics, written by a historian and public man of breadth and character, who is intimately familiar, through his family, with the history of the city of Albany to the mid-19th century. I am myself a historian of 19th century New York State, and found the book not only to be very informative, but enjoyable to read as well.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent presentation and well worth the price........1999-09-22

John McEneny gives a full coverage of the history of Albany, NY. Well researched; easy to read; some great maps included.

                      Book Description

For street photographers, New York has always been a city of unparalleled visual excitement, teeming with diverse people and distinctive neighborhoods. New York: Capital of Photography examines how photographers chronicled New York throughout the twentieth century, how the city changed their vision, and how their work affected ideas about New York throughout the world. This beautifully illustrated book presents the work of both famous and lesser-known photographers, many of them Jewish. An underlying theme in this pictorial history of New York is the critical role played by Jewish sensibility. Max Kozloff begins with the development of street photography that emerged in New York in the early 1900s with a local school of photographers led by Alfred Stieglitz. Documenting work, loneliness, play, conflict, love, and spectacle, this group came to define urban perception as the characteristic visual experience of modernity. Some photographers also became social activists, observing New York's ethnic and racial diversity and focusing their lenses on newcomers and marginalized groups. From the 1930s to 1960s, Kozloff shows, members of the New York School envisioned the city in a different way, as a processing center for immigrants, a site of commercial display, and a crossroads of world culture. In the 1950s and 1960s, photographers saw New York as an uneasy battleground, and their pictures caught the forces of civil rights, sexual liberation, and leftist politics as they clashed with traditional powers. Finally, as the century waned, photographers became more self-conscious, exploring their own and their friends' identities through the camera's eye. From Lewis Hine's 1905 picture of recent immigrants at Ellis Island to Nan Goldin's portraits of her friends over the past thirty years, these photographs reveal the true vitality of New York. The book accompanies an exhibition at The Jewish Museum, New York, from April 28 to September 2, 2002.

5 out of 5 stars Max Kozloff, as always, extremely interesting.......2006-07-08

Had really no time to finalize the book so far, however, quick overview: as always, one of the most original authors on photography (along with Ian Jeffrey), Max Kozloff exploits the depth of the medium with exceptional originality and taste. I would highly recommend to anyone interested in the medium of photography as such as well as to those interested in excellent criticism of nowadays.

5 out of 5 stars An Exceptionally Fine Look at 20th Century Photography.......2004-02-12

New York: Capital of Photography is one of those rare books that takes on a difficult subject and carries it off so well that more is achieved than any reader could normally expect.

The subject is New York City in the 20th century. How did the most prominent and highly respected photographers look at and capture the Big Apple? That's the subject here. The only photographers that you might have expected to be in the book that aren't are Diane Arbus, Roy DeCarava and Robert Frank -- due to disputes with Ms. Arbus's daughter and the latter two photographers. So it?s quite complete.

I am a photography fan, and was familiar with most of the photographers covered in the book. But I found the book built on my previous understanding of their work by exposing me to works that I had not seen before and by carefully explaining those works. Some may be disappointed that many iconographic works are not included here . . . but many of those are referenced in Max Kozloff's essay. So you'll see them indirectly in your mind.

The plates capture many different focuses for photography, different styles, varieties of techniques and equipment, and different philosophies about the purpose of photography. As such, they present a catalog of the whole field of photography in the last century. That catalog is more valuable because it concentrates on one subject . . . in many different dimensions.

Frankly, how do you capture New York on film? You can't. Most photographers tried to capture tiny elements that express universal truths. Some succeeded in timeless ways while others created time-limited archives of the past.

As wonderful as the photographs are, the essay by Max Kozloff is what sets this book apart from other photography books. It's as though he gives you a personal tour of the show and answers your questions about the photographers and the plates in as much detail as you want. Almost every plate is discussed and some figures are added for context as well. Seeing the collection through his eyes was like suddenly being loaned an advanced degree in photography studies. Enlivened by this education, I'm sure my eye will always notice more about fine photography when I see it displayed in the future.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to deepen their understanding of this field. In addition, I strongly urge New Yorkers to get copies. The sights captured here will trigger many important memories.

As I finished this wonderful volume, I thought about how fortunate photography students would be if their teachers used this book as a source . . . and then assigned the students to photograph New York.

Back in print after years of unavailability, this is the companion to a controversial documentary exhibit that appeared at New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art in 1969. Harlem on My Mind (the title comes from the novel by writer Claude McKay) includes hundreds of photographs (many by the celebrated James VanDerZee) of the famous, like Duke Ellington or Malcolm X, as well as of anonymous Harlemites in bars, restaurants, rooming houses and on the street. This edition includes a new foreword by Henry Louis Gates, Jr., as well as a new introduction by Allon Shoener explaining the genesis of the exhibit.

                      Book Description

On January 18, 1969, one of the first exhibits to showcase, through photographs, audio, and text, the Black American experience, opened at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Now, a generation later, Harlem on My Mind still influences the way museums around the world present African American culture to the public. Harlem on My Mind commemorates the work of some of Harlem's most treasured photographers, including James VanDerZee and Gordon Parks. The images, many of which were first published in this remarkable book, now form an integral part of our visual heritage.

This book illustrates the daily life of Harlem in the 1920's and 1930's. It gives the reader an examined persective of what it was like to be part of a community struggling to be heard. The photos of the funeral processions were especially heart grabbing! When this exhibit first showed at the Metropoliton Musuem it caused a great controversy. Many of the leaders of civil rights movement thought the photos were displaying black people as subjects not art. There were massive demostrations outside the museum to have it close. Many of the photos are still part of the museum's collection although they are not on display. this book offers great insight into the life of Harlem Renaissance. I also recommend, The Sleeper Wakes Edited by Marcy Knopf and A Renaissance in Harlem by Lionel C Bascom. These books offer additional information on what life was like during the New Negro Movement. A valuable art history lesson for us all.
