4 out of 5 stars Great way to experience Austria.......2006-10-15

If you have an extended budget, like to drive, and want to explore the culture and history of Austria this may be a good choice for you.

This travel book is different than the rest in that it presents several travel (rather driving) itineraries to experience differnt parts of the country. It is well priced, with lots of good tourist information on all the major towns covered on the selected beautiful routes and also loding information (not for the travelers on a shoe-string budget).

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous Inns and Itineraries for Exciting Travel.......2006-03-26

We wouldn't think of taking a trip on our own without Karen Brown's Inns and Itinieraries. We feel confident about enjoying where we will be visiting and the places that we will be staying.
Her books are up to date and her insights are interesting, and the sketches help in giving you an idea about what you will be seeing. We love these books and purchased both the Austrian and German books for our upcoming trip.

Abraham Lincoln, who had worked as a riverboat pilot before turning to politics, knew a thing or two about the problems of transporting goods and people from place to place. He was also convinced that the United States would flourish only if its far-flung regions were linked, replacing sectional loyalties with an overarching sense of national destiny.

Building a transcontinental railroad, writes the prolific historian Stephen Ambrose, was second only to the abolition of slavery on Lincoln's presidential agenda. Through an ambitious program of land grants and low-interest government loans, he encouraged entrepreneurs such as California's "Big Four"--Charles Crocker, Collis Huntington, Mark Hopkins, and Leland Stanford--to take on the task of stringing steel rails from ocean to ocean. The real work of doing so, of course, was on the shoulders of immigrant men and women, mostly Chinese and Irish. These often-overlooked actors and what a contemporary called their "dreadful vitality" figure prominently in Ambrose's narrative, alongside the great financiers and surveyors who populate the standard textbooks.

In the end, Ambrose writes, Lincoln's dream transformed the nation, marking "the first great triumph over time and space" and inaugurating what has come to be known as the American Century. David Haward Bain's Empire Express, which covers the same ground, is more substantial, but Ambrose provides an eminently readable study of a complex episode in American history. --Gregory McNamee

                      Book Description

In this account of an unprecedented feat of engineering, vision, and courage, Stephen E. Ambrose offers a historical successor to his universally acclaimed Undaunted Courage, which recounted the explorations of the West by Lewis and Clark.

Nothing Like It in the World is the story of the men who built the transcontinental railroad -- the investors who risked their businesses and money; the enlightened politicians who understood its importance; the engineers and surveyors who risked, and lost, their lives; and the Irish and Chinese immigrants, the defeated Confederate soldiers, and the other laborers who did the backbreaking and dangerous work on the tracks.

The Union had won the Civil War and slavery had been abolished, but Abraham Lincoln, who was an early and constant champion of railroads, would not live to see the great achievement. In Ambrose's hands, this enterprise, with its huge expenditure of brainpower, muscle, and sweat, comes to life.

The U.S. government pitted two companies -- the Union Pacific and the Central Pacific Railroads -- against each other in a race for funding, encouraging speed over caution. Locomo-tives, rails, and spikes were shipped from the East through Panama or around South America to the West or lugged across the country to the Plains. This was the last great building project to be done mostly by hand: excavating dirt, cutting through ridges, filling gorges, blasting tunnels through mountains.

At its peak, the workforce -- primarily Chinese on the Central Pacific, Irish on the Union Pacific -- approached the size of Civil War armies, with as many as fifteen thousand workers on each line. The Union Pacific was led by Thomas "Doc" Durant, Oakes Ames, and Oliver Ames, with Grenville Dodge -- America's greatest railroad builder -- as chief engineer. The Central Pacific was led by California's "Big Four": Leland Stanford, Collis Huntington, Charles Crocker, and Mark Hopkins. The surveyors, the men who picked the route, were latter-day Lewis and Clark types who led the way through the wilderness, living off buffalo, deer, elk, and antelope.

In building a railroad, there is only one decisive spot -- the end of the track. Nothing like this great work had been seen in the world when the last spike, a golden one, was driven in at Promontory Summit, Utah, in 1869, as the Central Pacific and the Union Pacific tracks were joined.

Ambrose writes with power and eloquence about the brave men -- the famous and the unheralded, ordinary men doing the extraordinary -- who accomplished the spectacular feat that made the continent into a nation.

The Union had won the Civil War; slavery was abolished. Lincoln, an early champion of railroads, would not live to see the next great achievement. It took brains, muscle, and sweat in quantities and scope never before ventured and required engineers and surveyors willing to lose their lives in the wilderness; men who had commanded and obeyed in war; workers from China, Ireland, and the defeated South; and capitalists betting their money for possible great profit. The government pitted the Union Pacific and the Central Pacific against each other in a race for funding, encouraging speed over caution.

Locomotives, falls, and spikes were shipped from the east through Panama, around South America, or lugged across the country. American dreams, greed, courage, innovation and daring make this a wonderful story of an event that changed the face of this country forever...

                      5 out of 5 stars "Hmmm.....Railroads are Boring!" Right?.......2006-11-07

I "read" this as a book on tape. I had this on my Mp3 player for quite awhile because I thought, "Railroad stories are boring!" But, I found that not to be true. Imagine a time when the "fastest" and "easiest" way to travel across country was by wagon, horse, and oxen going 20 miles a day! Then, you find out about a "train" that goes 18 miles an hour and you can just sit there and let it carry you and your stuff for hundreds and even thousands of miles! You don't even have to push your wagon over any rivers! You'd be pretty excited...yea! Then, there's these two Railroad Companies that are competing to see who gets the further in a given amount of time. The further each company lays track the more their profits in terms of land grands and fares will be. The only problems are that they have to tunnel through about 8 mountains, fight off angry Indians, build bridges over streams and rivers and fill in ravines, and get all the supplies and workers out into the wilderness so they can lay the tracks. Plus there are "the personalities" of the leaders and workmen to contend with not to mention how to finance the operation that will take about 6 years to complete at full speed. Yep, it's quite a story! Read it either in print or as a book on tape. Email: boland7214@aol.

Stephen Ambrose did a great job of explaining the complicated details that led to the miracle of the transcontinental railroad. Anyone who appreciates herculean feats and the web of intrigue surrounding their beginnings, eventual birth and their effect on our great country will love this story. A true five star book.

4 out of 5 stars The Great race.......2006-09-10

An engrossing story about the companies and the men behind the building of the Railroad from Omaha to Sacramento. The US Government with its hands tied in the Civil war, sets up a competition between 2 private companies Union Pacific and the Central Pacific who start laying tracks from Omaho and Sacramento. The book details the progress through each state, with insight into the leaders and the workforce behind the construction. Then it reaches a fast pace once we enter Utah where the two tracks meet.
Well this railroad accelerated exponentially the immigration to the the west. The story of the construction is really a mix of great entrepreneurship, big business, railroad surveyors, wild life lovers. But elements like using/abusing an underclass for cheap labor but denying rights, overreacting to native peoples fear of intrusion into their land, insensitivity of big business/technology to native lifestyles may have some relevance even today and make us interospect what 'liberty' actually means.
The Author does a good job in keeping the reader interested, but probably is prone to exaggeration sometimes.
A good way to relive the railroad is to take Amtrak's California Zephyr (which skips wyoming, parts of utah, nevada) or to take I-80

3 out of 5 stars Ok for Boys.......2004-05-05

It is a good book for more boys. It can keep you interested in it. There was alot of flashback in the story. He keeps remembering when he had all the different jobs on the railroad, and keeps thinking how lucky he is where he is.My favorite part in this book is when the indians shot at them. It made every body jump.

5 out of 5 stars Good read for all! You should buy it, no matter what.......2003-04-20

This fictional journal centers around 15 year old Sean Sullivan. Coming from Chicago, he meets his father. His father works for the Union Pacific Railroad in Nebraska. Soon, Sean encounters Old West Towns, mean workers, and prejudice towards Chinese and Irishmen. You'll also learn about the Transcontinental Railroad, one of our history's interesting subjects. This book takes you from Omaha to the meeting of the Central Pacific at Promontory Summit. Hop on board and enjoy for yourself, The Journal of Sean Sullivan. I assure you, you won't be disappointed!

I really enjoyed reading this book it was very interesting and adventurious. It was an average reading book and the words were not that hard to understand. I wuold recomand this book for sixth grade and up. I hope William Durbin writes more books like this I really enjoy reading them.

                      5 out of 5 stars Very entertaining........2001-08-09

The book was really interesting. Sean Sullivan like everyone else had to start as a water boy and work his way up: he worked as a butcher, then he shot rattlesnakes, then he laid down the rails, then finally he became a spiker. This way the reader could see what it was like to work at each job. Sean wrote in detail, but not so much as to be unrealistic. I liked the letters he got from his brother in Chicago as well.

                      5 out of 5 stars Sean Sullivan.......2001-01-10

" I saw my first scalp today and I have to admit it scared me good." That's only the begging of The Journal of Sean Sullivan. William Durbin wrote the book. It's a book about boy who writes in it and the book is his journal. He tells what happens on different days. What I liked about the book was that it was interesting and it was like no other book I have read before. What I didn't like was it kept skipping days and it made it hard to follow. The style the author writes is both diary and journal style. He also writes about things in the past. This book is a journal and it has some historical fiction in it. I'd recommended this book to any one who likes to read about someone's experience or history. Some of his other work is The Journal of Collin Pendleton. It's about World War two and a guy writes in his journal. You should try to read one of these books because you can learn about what people did in the past to make your life easier. Who knows you might even like the story.

                            Book Description

The men who built the Transcontinental Railroad between 1863 and 1869 labored 12 hour days building bridges, blasting tunnels, and laying rail beds in the midst of freezing winters and hot summers while fighting Indians and dodging dynamite explosions. This book honors the tens of thousands of mostly immigrants by describing their day-to-day lives while constructing the greatest railroad of all time.

My two Golden Retrievers are both 11 years old and as they are my first dogs to reach an advanced age, I wanted to be sure I was giving them the best life possible in their senior years. This book is instructive, informative and wonderful to read. You read about other older dogs and smile to learn they have the same age problems as yours. It also encourages you to not let your dog lay down and grow old. There is still SO much you can teach and share with your dog even when he/she gets gray hair. Don't let them sleep through their most mature and wise years.

My son is collecting the 50 State quarter set. He's having fun and we're getting our money's worth from the folder! I would definitely recommend this item to amateur collectors.

3 out of 5 stars You Get What You Pay For.......2007-07-17

I was a bit disappointed after receiving this item. It is a good value for the price, I suppose, but the binding was much flimsier than I expected and on the inside, the blue paper had been scratched and repainted with blue paint several shades lighter than the paper. This was just in one small area, but it stands out badly.
However, if you are not too serious a coin collector (as I am) and just want something quick to keep coins in that resembles a collector's book, then you might like this for the convenience and the lower price.

looks robust and comes with a lot of useful information.
Just be careful putting the quarters in, they fit in a little tight.
Also to pop them back out, press from behind, dont try to pry them out, i learned the hard way!

5 out of 5 stars Your basic green Littleton coin folder for the 50 State Commemorative Quarters.......2006-02-25

This is your basic folder for collecting your state quarters. Since it is a Littleton Custom Coin Folder it comes in their standard dark green, with "Fifty States Commemorative Quarters 1999-2008" on the cover. Obviously if you are a serious coin collector then you want a folder that will match the rest of your sets, in which case there is a good chance that they are Littleton folders as well. Otherwise there are other folders that you can get that will give you a lot more information (some appear to be quite kid friendly), but I wanted the basic. To tell the truth, my father had green coin folders for his coin collection and so it had to be green as far as I was concerned. After all, green is the color of money. Not that coins are green, but they are money. Hey, childhood associations are strong, what do you want from me?

There are four panels in the folder. The first describes the series, also known as the Statehood Quarter Program, and explains some of the changes made to the obverse and reverse of the quarter. The next panel contrasts the obverse of the Washington Quarter (1932-1998) with the obverse of the Fifty State Commemorative Quarter (1998-2008). There are slots for each of those (although I used the bicentennial quarter obverse just to be different), and for the set of five quarters for 1999 and 2000. Panel three has the quarters for 2001-2004, and panel four for 2005-2008. So you will end up with $13 worth of quarters. I just got picked up the Nevada quarter so I am current and up to date. Just be aware that if it has not already happened, finding your own state quarter could prove to be the most difficult (last year I found more Minnesota state quarters in Oregon than I did in Minnesota; irony abounds).

Under each state name is listed the date it entered the union, except for the original 13 colonies, in which case the date is when it ratified the constitution. So the fifty quarters are arranged in chronological order, although since a state does not officially enter the union until the president signs the legislation. This is a trivial matter, but when the bills for statehood for both North and South Dakota, along with Montana and Washington, were passed on February 22, 1889, which was actually during the first administration of Grover Cleveland, it was Benjamin Harrison who got to sign the proclamations on November 2, 1889. However, the rivalry between the Dakotas was such that which ever territory was admitted first as a state could lord in over the other. So Harrison had Secretary of State James Blaine shuffle the papers and hide the text so that the president really did not know which one he signed first. However, the tradition was established to list North Dakota before South Dakota, but the chronology could be off here, at least they probably think so in South Dakota. Book Description

Covering the basic principles, aesthetics, and design practices of Japanese gardens, this book provides the practical information gardeners need to adapt these ideals to North American landscapes and sensibilities. Not a step-by-step construction manual, it teaches the fundamental principles of integrating house, garden, and landscape by making art from simple groupings of rocks, plants, and water and opening Japanese symbolism to elements with universal significance, such as water and paths. Included is an extensive encyclopedia of appropriate plants to use based on creating and defining particular eco-regions.

                                Book Description

The simple, organic form of the traditional Japanese home, designed to integrate with its surroundings, has had a profound effect on modern architecture. Since the mid-1800's, architects around the world have drawn inspiration from its ancient principles.

Nature on View presents a new chapter in that rich history with a look at 28 American homes and gardens located in various parts of the country. Together they demonstrate the current appeal and adaptability of timeless Japanese home design to Western lives and landscapes.

Shown here are country retreats, suburban homes, city apartments, guest houses, versatile teahouses, hilltop getaways and seaside residences. Ranging from luxurious to modest, some are brand new, while others are radical renovations of older homes. Each, however, incorporates basic principles of Japanese architecture in refreshing ways.

Jean Mahoney and Peggy Rao, authors of two earlier books that offer new ideas on living with Japanese antiques and artifacts, conduct this house and garden tour with their partner, photographer Toshiaki Sakuma. More than 180 full-color photographs focus on the fine craftsmanship, serene flexibility, decorative use of structural elements, and above all, the easy merger with the outdoors.

The accompanying text explains the origins of these appealing structures and introduces readers to the innovators involved. Some of the creators are professional landscapers, architects or designers; others are simply private citizens whose avocation became Japanese design. All share a heightened sensitivity to the natural environment.

                                    Book Description

In current usage polemics is broadly defined as the practice of rhetorical persuasion or as the rhetorical presentation of an argument in dispute. The phenomenon of polemics is found throughout the whole corpus of biblical literature. In most instances the polemics is direct, but sometimes indirect, and occasionally it appears to be deliberately covert. This book is primarily concerned with exploring the phenomenon of covert polemics. Dealing first with considerations of method, definition and characterization, the study moves on to the analysis of a number of narrative texts and the uncovering of their covert polemical content. Polemics of this type is a feature of biblical writing on a range of central issues, and can be instructively isolated in texts relating to cultic locations (Beth El, Jerusalem), questions of leadership (the houses of Saul and David), community boundaries (the Samaritans) and other problems of legitimation.

                                      Book Description

Las Vegas, an artificial city brought to life in the heart of the Mojave desert, is the ultimate urban temptation: its shopping malls, theme parks and casinos offer an unceasing parade of entertainments and diversions. Its architecture combines slick, commercial seduction with a childish, cartoon-like appearance; its streets and arcades are constantly animated with visitors and residents willingly submitting to the opium of this spectacular place. Las Vegas has always fascinated those who write about the American malaise, from Tom Wolfe to J. G. Ballard, but Bégout reveals the city’s other side, adding a valuable philosophical dimension to the nightmarish, fantastic visions that haunt the imagination of novelists and film-makers. The author draws minutely detailed portraits in the form of city scenes – portraits that are often tragic and sometimes extremely comic. Bégout lets himself be dragged into this party, this "paradise for bastards", as Nick Tosches calls it.For Bégout, Las Vegas is the consummation of the modern city, the ultimate destination of our urban experiments, the great supermarket of the global village. "Neither near nor far, neither here nor elsewhere, Las Vegas is distinguished by nothingness. For us it is zeropolis, the non-city that is the very first city, just as zero is the very first number.""This is a real gem, as brilliant and remarkable as its subject"—Livres Hebdo"Bégout felicitously combines the philosopher’s capacity for thinking with the novelist’s descriptive power. A success."—Le Nouvel Observateur

                                          Book Description

The Biographic Dictionary of Chinese Communism, first published in 1970, provides biographies of 433 influential figures of the Chinese Communist Party in the years from 1921 to 1965. Lucidly written, it has served as a valuable research tool, not only for students and scholars of Chinese history, but for scholars in other disciplines. By charting the careers of numerous Party officials, Donald W. Klein and Anne B. Clark provide insight into "notable patterns of career activity"--particularly, of the frequent, dramatic rise and fall from power.

These are political biographies; the overwhelming majority deal with CCP, government, or military personalities. Approximately 200 of the entries are on members of the Party Central Committee. Each of the others documents a top leader in some field, from government ministers, Party officials in the provinces, provincial governors, diplomats, military and labor leaders, scientists, and science administrators to women and youth leaders, artists, and writers. Each biography contains all information then available on the person's family, education, socio-economic status, early revolutionary activity, and career after the Communists came to power in 1949, as well as the dates and purposes of all foreign trips, information about important writings, and involvement in all kinds of Party activities.

The biographies are well documented, and accompanied by 96 appendices which integrate many of the materials found in the text. For example, one appendix lists every ministry and minister since the People's Republic was established. The Biographic Dictionary also contains a glossary-name index, which lists 1,750 persons found in the text and appendices, along with the Chinese characters for their name. An annotated general bibliography lists the major sources and general references used throughout the study.
