    Book Description

To botanists a flora is a reference work that systematically describes the plants of a particular region, listed by species and considered as a whole. In this case the region constitutes approximately one-fifth of the land area of the conterminous United States. Flora of the Great Plains is the culmination of a monumental undertaking, begun some thirty-five years ago and founded on a massive specimen collection program. The Great Plains Flora Association itself was formed to combined the resources of fourteen botanists and their herbaria at various institutions in the region and to compile the flora.

Flora of the Great Plains is a manual of the vascular plants that occur spontaneously in the region that extends from the eastern flank of the Rocky Mountain uplift, eastward to the potential beginning of continuous woodland, and from the Canadian border south through the Texas Panhandle. Thus included are the states of Kansas, Nebraska, North and South Dakota; eastern Montana, Wyoming, and Colorado; northeast New Mexico; the Texas Panhandle; northwest Oklahoma; and western Missouri, Iowa, and Minnesota. This volume is the only up-to-date floristic treatment in existence for the area.

Flora of the Great Plains includes general keys, descriptions, statements of range, flowering times, ecological data, and relevant synonymies for every flowering plant, conifer, and fern known to occur in the region. Specimens for the compilation are housed in the herbaria of the institutions of the Great Plains Flora Association's members and at the New York Botanical Garden.

This volume will serve as the definitive compendium of information about plants of the Great Plains for generations. It will be used as a a textbook in plant taxonomy classes and as a sourcebook for naturalists writing on weeds, wild flowers, trees grasses, etc. It will also appeal to biologists, agronomists, and horticulturalists who require current information about regional plants.

5 out of 5 stars Only the Information We Backpackers Want and Not Pages of Stuff We Don't!.......2006-01-09

The BUG guides are simple to read, a lot thinner, less bulky and heavy than their competitors who keep adding fine dining, five star hotels and other stuff we backpackers never use (which makes a lot of difference when you have to lug the thing around an entire continent, or even in this case just New Zealand) and much better value. They give a description and rating on each hostel (they claim they do not accept free nights or money but who knows), as well as maps of hostel locations and travel company information.

You obviously won't agree with all their reviews of the accommodation but that's the backpacking scene. You can have a terrible experience at somewhere where someone else had one of the best stays of their life. Don't rely on this guide alone, ask other backpackers who have been to the destinations you are going where they stayed and what it was like. The more opinions you get the more likely you are to get a clearer picture.

Definitely get this over Lonely Planet and Let's Go, at least until they clean up their acts.

I thought that the guide contained some good information, especially if you want hostels. But, I found it difficult to read. I think that I still prefer Lonely Planet's guide.

5 out of 5 stars Useless Weight and Space Info Filtered Out of This Great Companion.......2005-12-18

As the nineties ended Lonely Planet, Let's Go and the others forgot the market which created them and with greed in their eyes and discontent for the backpackers who had put food on the tables of their families and employees dramatically cut down on the destinations listed so you'd have to buy more specific guides. They replaced all but a few hostel listings (leaving ones who probably paid to be listed) with hotels (Lonely Planet has the most expensive Hotel in Australia, Palazzo Versace in their Gold Coast accommodation listings for crying out loud), fine dining and other useless information backpackers had no use for in an attempt to sell more guides to luggage wheeling short stay tour company travellers as well. They ignored cries of put back destinations and hostel listings from backpackers who wrote reviews on this and other sites such as Seethisplanet or sent letters to these companies and now they have paid the price. A great competitor has been able to enter the market (if the former guides had done their job there is no way there would have been market share for BUG) who just lists what we backpackers want, hotels listings and basic information on what there is to see at each destination.

The BUG guides are simple to read, a lot thinner, less bulky and heavy than their competitors (which makes a lot of difference when you have to lug the thing around an entire continent in your backpack) and much better value. They give a description and rating on each hostel (they claim they do not accept free nights or money however they actually contradict themselves in the Sydney accommodation section under Victoria Lodge by saying BUG weren't aloud inside which indicates they were letting the hostels know they were from a reviewing guide book so would obviously get the best beds and more effort would be put into service and cleaning the building or maybe they don't actually spend the night at the hostels but just say who they are and have a guided tour, who knows). As well there are maps and travel company information. The only criticisms I have are that they do repeat information from one paragraph to the next especially relating to trains and buses. Even though they do not accept payments for listings they do follow the larger marketing budget high profile companies for attractions. For example the more expensive Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary is listed in the Gold Coast attractions but the much better and cheaper David Fleay Wildlife Park located at Burleigh (just up the road) is left out. But I'm sure they'll improve this over the next editions.

Dana Fradon's book is quite fabulous! After researching the history of folly myself, I was pleased to find that all of Dana Fradon's stories about historical personages such as Will Somers, etc., aligns accurately with the existing documentation. I only wish that such well-written, enjoyable, imaginatively-illustrated juvenile literature had been more available when I was younger! If you know of a budding history buff, send Dana Fradon's work their way immediately!

                          Book Description

Sandy Butler's method of training has shown positive results almost immediately in a pet's behavior pattern. Her technique is based on communicating with a pet in a simple straightforward manner. It has worked on pets previously thought to be untrainable. Now you will be able to train your dog with consistency, caring, and compassion.

Being a dog-lover, I looked forward to a solid training program to bond with my pet. Although the book contains some good information, it could easily fit in a 1 page magazine article. Please save your money.

This book was a BIG disappointment. I was seduced by a TV show that featured the author demonstrating her technique, but when I got the book in hand, I realized it's all bark and no bite.

First of all, EVERY OTHER PAGE is an illustration. (Low-quality, I might add.) So, you aren't buying a book with a lot of information, because all that space is wasted on cartoons. Second, Ms. Butler doesn't bring anything new to the table. She reiterates the standard of dog training: be kind and consistent. I agree with that, but in order to work, the actual training CANNOT be done in one hour. (If you believe that, I have some diet pills that will help you lose about 50 pounds in one weekend.)

Maybe some people will find this book useful, but I don't think it covers anything thoroughly. There are a lot of other dog-training manuals out there that leave this title in the dust.

My wife has had an affection for animals her whole life. After we got married, I learned that we were going to have a permanent resident which required a tremendous amount of care and attention. This was not something that I had expected or ever dreamed of. This so called beautiful, one-of-a-kind Irish Setter named Casey was not what I had expected during my courtship. Casey always required attention. So much attention that whenever anyone came to visit, she would jump on them immediately when they walked in the door, try to sit on their lap and if that didn't work, constantly nuzzle our guest's hand or leg til she was petted (just to mention one irritation of many). We were forever pulling her away when company came and locking her up afraid that her enthusiasm would turn into a scratch or bite on some unsuspecting relative! I knew something was wrong, but I couldn't make my wife realize this was excessive and had to stop. She began to see the light soon after the dog ate up our expensive furniture throughout our new condominium. This book has made a significant difference in my life and probably saved my marriage. Not only does the dog no longer chew up our possesions, but her behavior is totally socially acceptable in all environments including with children and even with different types of animals. Oh yes, I've saved a fortune on shoes and socks too! I have never reviewed a book before but can endorse this book without reservation, Ms Butler should receive a commendation from our condiminium association for helping us to keep Casey from destroying our whole building! This book works!!
