Guerilla Travel Tactics is an amazing book! It is chock full of wonderful tips which are seldom -- if ever -- found in other travel advice books. It is easy to read, clear, and well-organized. And it is very, very useful. The tips in this book can do much to make your trips less expensive, more comfortable and more fun. This book is a thousand times better than other other travel advice book. I have read this book from cover to cover at least 3 or 4 times. If you travel, you need this book. In any case, it's fun to read. A lot of fun, you'll see.

If there is one lesson I have discovered over my umpteen years of travelling is that you need to be very creative when coordinating your jaunts in order to glean the most advantageous deals.

Regrettably, up to recently, I did not have at my disposal the Internet or travel guides such as Guerrilla Travel Tactics authored by Jay Conrad Levinson and Theo Brandt-Sarif.
This book aspires to be the bible for the cost conscious business or leisure traveler, and it definitely has reached its objectives. Particularly, when you take into consideration that within the pages of one book you have practical replies to the how's, when's, where's, and why's of the travel industry pertaining to travel costs and more.

The authors advocate, "that guerrilla travelers achieve conventional goals using unconventional means," or as I mentioned earlier, creativity.
No matter if it be airline reservations, hotel accommodations, car rentals, frequent flyer points, or anything else related to travel, it is you alone that has to seek out the bargains and not a travel agent, who for the most part does not have your interest at heart.

A good portion of Guerrilla Travel Tactics is allotted to airlines such as: airfare savings, lounge membership, alliances, navigating the Internet to weed out great deals, getting the most out of frequent flyer points, and seating.
Are you cognizant that when it comes to flying, not all air miles are created equal? Some airlines may give fewer miles when flying at discounted rate.
Would you give up a first class seat that you may have been upgraded to for an aisle coach seat next to a vacant seat and how do you go about securing this seat?
These and many more are some of the "treats" that are delivered to the reader.
The remaining sections are devoted to hotels, car rentals, affinity cards, and even how to effectively lodge a complaint.

Of special interest are the informative sidebars of tips and alerts, as well as the appendixes.
Are you mindful that booking a deeply discounted hotel room online many sometimes be non-refundable; be sure to check over the fine print. If you are concerned about your hotel room, it is a good idea to tip the bellman before checking in and inquiring which rooms he would choose for himself, if he were with his spouse.
Here is one tip I found quite interesting- one of the biggest cons around in travel is paying $495 to become a travel agent without IATA certification. Hotels and airlines are not stupid and they will not provide discounted rooms or airfare for these "so-called" travel agents.

A helpful appendix lists the major airlines, hotels chains, car rentals companies, and hotel consolidators, indicating their web sites and telephone numbers. You also have information pertaining to the frequent flyer plans of each U.S. and International airline, as well as the credit card information pertaining to them.

The authors' breezy and enlightening style of writing make this frequently dry topic as appealing as it can ever hope to get, while at the same time imparting some super useful information.

The first truly valuable book for all travellers.......2004-11-16

As someone who has been travelling for business for the last 15 years (cost constraints but a low level of tolerance for poor quality or service) and someone who has been travelling more often for fun (5 star taste but on a 2 or 3 star budget), I have found that most "travel tips" books are either too'dumbed down" with obvious tips that make little difference, or are so arcane with regard to specific locales that they are not realistic for me, as to be useless. This is the first book that is comprised entirely of real and useful information for travellers of all types and budgets. Kudos to Theo Brandt-Sarif who did the research and to the publisher that ventured to bring yet another travel book onto the scene. I have used the information in this book on my last few trips and it has really made a difference. Skeptical friends of mine who borrowed this book and used it have since purchased it and recommend it to their friends.

Nothing New.......2004-09-12

The title of this book grab my attention...but that is about it. I did not find anything new in this book and much of the information is hype and not relevant to real travel. For example the back cover of the book says that you can upgrade to first class every time. Anyone who was traveled before knows this is not the case. (...)

The author has given some great tips on how to save money while traveling, even helpful things that would not have ever crossed my mind. The book is informative and fun to read -- a must for the new world traveler or the seasoned traveler.

Not worth the buying.......1998-02-06

This book is a collection of illustrations taken from various unnamed late medieval, renaissance and post renaissance sources. In Ms. Jablonski's forward she does not name her sources for her text or for her illustrations. It is next to useless for doing anything with designing gardens based on what is presented in the text or the illustrations.

Sylvia Landsberg is a noted garden designer and researcher on gardens through the ages. Her speciality is medieval gardens and this is a masterpiece. If you have any interest in historical gardens, get this book.

Excellent general knowledge source.......2004-05-24

This book covers the medieval gardens from their origins in Roman times up to the beginning of the Renaissance. It is mostly oriented towards English gardens. It covers everything from the large pleasure gardens and parks of the aristocracy to the backyard plots of the peasants and the hospital gardens of monasteries. There is enough information to give a good overview, sufficient for most people's needs I think, and it is neatly illustrated throughout. References are given for each section, and the reader is directed to more sources of information if they desire in-depth research.

Good general work on subject; excellent bibliography........1999-04-07

This book is the best single source that I have found on medieval gardening. The emphasis is on Britain and the low countries from the thirteenth through the fifteenth centuries. Gardens at all social levels are covered, from peasant to townhouse, cloister to royalty. Illustrations are not lavish but sufficient and are all well identified. Many architectural drawings are included. The chapter on recreated or reproduced medieval gardens is interesting, particluarly as the author shares her insights from working on some of them. I found the chapter on incorporating medieval recreations into modern home gardens to be less useful unless one has not been exposed to such information before.

I really liked the first 2 sections, Keeping your horse healthy and the Anatomical Index of Diseases. I wish the A-z sections describing different disease was a little more in-depth. Its a little more general than I wanted but still a very very knowledgable book.

A Horse Lovers Must.......2000-08-11

This book is very detailed with diseases, illnesses, cut, fractures, snake bites and more. I like to take care of my horse when I can and not take her to the vet except after she foals. I like to give the shots and do what I can. This book is very detailed and very helpful.

The Complete Equine Veterinary Manual.......2000-05-12

This is a great book. Its packed with information to help you with basic horse care and to identify and treat numerous injuries and ailments. It has lots of pictures color pictures and it organizes the information in an easy to read format. I would recommend it.

Each breed has a color illustration (not picture), size, and four 3 sentence descriptions on characteristics, history, uses, and similar breeds. I gave it 4 stars because it doesn't have the Foxtrotter, which I was interested in. This seems to be a good quick reference guide, not much depth.

If you want to learn all there is to know about every horse breed in the world, then look no further, you've found the right place. This book is a great reference to horse breeds all over the world, fully illustrated with each colour and breed explained word by word. It's not too big either so you can take it practically anywhere! This book really is great, especially at the fantasticly low price that it is. I would recommend this to all horsey lovers in the world!

Family and home are one word—jia—in the Chinese language. Family can be separated and home may be relocated, but jia remains intact. It signifies a system of mutual obligation, lasting responsibility, and cultural values. This strong yet flexible sense of kinship has enabled many Chinese immigrant families to endure long physical separation and accommodate continuities and discontinuities in the process of social mobility.

Based on an analysis of over three thousand family letters and other primary sources, including recently released immigration files from the National Archives and Records Administration, Haiming Liu presents a remarkable transnational history of a Chinese family from the late nineteenth century to the 1970s. For three generations, the family lived between the two worlds. While the immigrant generation worked hard in an herbalist business and asparagus farming, the younger generation crossed back and forth between China and America, pursuing proper education, good careers, and a meaningful life during a difficult period of time for Chinese Americans. When social instability in China and a hostile racial environment in America prevented the family from being rooted in either side of the Pacific, transnational family life became a focal point of their social existence.

This well-documented and illustrated family history makes it clear that, for many Chinese immigrant families, migration does not mean a break from the past but rather the beginning of a new life that incorporates and transcends dual national boundaries. It convincingly shows how transnationalism has become a way of life for Chinese American families.
