5 out of 5 stars very well illustrated and easy to read.......1997-12-15

A lovely book. However those who are looking to purchase Prof. Cole's seminal work on 'Lithops' should beware as this is not it! David Sprechman (USA) is the main author with Prof.Cole contributing a geographical survey. Other sections include a description of anatomy and an analytical key. Nothing too technical and an altogether enjoyable read.

As the title suggests, this book is a wonderful guide to the spiritual approach taken in the conception and planning of the Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian in Washington, D.C. It shows the cultural approach to the collections within the museum, and in the design of the museum. It provides a window into the Native American culture. It also provides a brief history of the Mall, and its design. I wish I had read this book before I had visited the museum. Now, I will just have to return and pay more attention, this time, to the design elements of the museum, the entrance to the museum, and the grounds surrounding it, as well as the collections.

5 out of 5 stars Best Guidebook for D.C. History.......2004-03-29

This is _the_ guidebook if you want to delve deeply into the City's history. It is chock full of interesting tidbits and historical information that bring the city alive. This is _not_ the guidebook for you if you are looking for the most updated information on museum hours and the like, if you are planning a quick trip the D.C. and want to hit just the main attractions, or if you need detailed maps (and metro information) for getting around the city. In other words, this book will satisfy your desire to really experience and get to know D.C. but it is not the best book to flip through when you suddenly realize that you are lost and need to figure out where to go. For better maps and more succinct descriptions of sites and restaurants, seek out Access Washington, D.C. by Richard Saul Wurman.

                            Book Description

How do you get a recalcitrant tiger out from under your bed?

These true stories evoke the hilarious, often poignant world of a veteran veterinarian where pet owners play as large a role as the pets themselves. Not only does Dr. Kiklevich treat traditional pets, she also cares for all kinds of exotic animals, from tigers to pythons and even tarantulas.

Some people, the author notes, love their pets more than the rest of their family, often for good reason. Some even imagine their animals' have the same emotions in the same situations as they do. Most have questions about the care of their pets ranging from the practical to the bizarre:

o How do you keep a ten foot python from strangling you?

o How can you tell if your sick turtle has died?

o How can you prevent your dog from developing prostate cancer?

                            o Do cats commit suicide?

                            o Do pigs eat pork?

The authors themselves have lived with a miniature menagerie of pets their entire lives. Many of the stories are about experiences with their own animals. They have also teamed up for field research on animals in the wild and some stories come from the pets they acquired during their years living at a biological field station in the South American bush, or their encounters that only a veterinarian would have with big game in East Africa or with odd creatures lurking in the wilds of New Guinea.

These stories are interspersed with practical advice about pet and health care. Written in the tradition of All Creatures Great and Small, the reader is made privy to the secret world of those staid-looking veterinary hospitals—the jokes, the joy, the grief, the human drama and the catastrophes no one ever mentions.

5 out of 5 stars Animals Best Friend.......2003-04-15

In many ways Dr. Kiklevich's book can be summed up in one anecdote she recounts -- as a new vet straight out of internship she joined a small practice with several established vets. When she discovered one of them was secretly being cruel to the animals, she laid down an ultimatim -- either the cruel doctor had to be fired or she'd quit.

The director of the clinic thought it over and wisely decided in her favor. Such devotion to her patients cannot be taught, and in the end is much more valuable than experience or seniority.

Veronika says she knew she wanted to be a vet from the time she was a toddler -- after reading this book you will believe her. She is funny, self-deprecating, witty, charming and most of all passionately, PASSIONATELY devoted to her patients.

I wish I could make her my vet.

1 out of 5 stars And People Still RESPECT Veterinarians??.......2002-12-29

As a veterinary student, I was appalled to read that such antics as lying to clients and microwaving cats not only seem to be acceptable, but touted as entertainment in this book! It certainly made me happy that I did not choose to pursue my education at Washington State University if this is any representation the quality of their instruction!

5 out of 5 stars Welcome to the Real World of Dr. Kiklevich.......2002-06-07

This book is guaranteed to make to you laugh, cry and exclaim in wonder and indignation as you follow the author through her thoroughly "real," but remarkably fanciful day-to-day experiences as a small animal vet. It seems almost impossible that one person could have encountered so many characters in a single lifetime. On the other hand, as you will quickly surmise within the first 10 pages of the book, Dr. Veronika Kiklevich is no ordinary vet.

Here is a woman with a wicked sense of humor, the stamina of a steam engine and an absolute commitment to the well-being of animals. This commitment leads her into all sorts of peculiar, poignant and occasionally dangerous adventures. We hear of her time spent as the vet for a wolf pack, her confrontation with a co-worker who is subsequently fired for cruelty, the vacation spent on a tropical island neutering cats, and her blatant manipulation of friends, family, co-workers and casual acquaintances in her quest to find homes for abandoned pets.

Not surprisingly, there are stories about human beings as well - the elegant, eloquent doctor who spared no expense on his dog's care, but turned out to be an imposter wanted in several states for forgery; the "special look" as she calls it (think "1980's grunge with may be a faint overlay of whips-and-chains panache") of Iguana owners; and the money hungry vet who liked to add "aggravation charges" to his clients' bills.

It is appropriate that all is not fun and laughter in this book, despite its author's gift for telling a ribald tale. Hers is a world where grisly things happen, and she makes no attempt to hide the gory details. Many a time I found myself setting the book aside, taking and deep breath and thinking, "whoa." However, if you can handle the heat this is a book that will delight, entertain and enlighten. Somehow the world seems like a better place knowing Dr. Kiklevich is out there practicing medicine.

Dai Jinhua is one of contemporary China's most influential theoreticians and cultural critics. A feminist Marxist, her literary, film and TV commentary has, over the last decade, addressed an expanding audience in China, Taiwan and Hong Kong. Cinema and Desire presents Dai Jinhua's best work to date. In the book she examines the Orientalism that made Zhang Yimou the darling of international film festivals, establishes Huang Shuqin's Human, Woman, Demon as the People's Republic's first genuinely feminist film, comments on TV representations of the Chinese diaspora in New York, speculates on the value of Mao Zedong as an icon of post-revolutionary consumerism, and analyses the rise of shopping plazas in 1990s urban China as a strange montage in which the political memories of Tiananmen Square and the logic of the global capitalist marketplace are intertwined.
