5 out of 5 stars My copy's worn from use.......2006-03-31

This was the very first travel book - my mother in law bought it for me right after we were stationed in Germany 6 years ago. I'm still using the 2001 version (yes, I know that's bad!) but it's gotten me all over! The simplified maps and the hotel recommendations have kept my trips easy and fun.

5 out of 5 stars As Someone Who Lives in Germany.......2004-12-15

Before I moved to Germany from the States I received this book from a friend of my mother's who had spent a few years attending university in Spain and said that Rick Steve's books were what everyone at the university used. Since moving to Germany this book has been great. I carry it around with me whenever we travel because it has so much valuable information.

Some of the other reviews have been extremely negative, but as someone who uses the book on a regular basis and actually lives in the country, I know that this book is great. It is less expensive than others and it gives great suggestions for places to stay. He does spend more time with Berlin and Munich, but considering these are two of the largest cities that have long histories, it only makes sense. The hotel suggestions are great, the last time we were in Berlin we opted to choose our own place that was less expensive. It was neat with all the Bears around (it was called the Bearliner), but it smelled. So, if you plan on travelling to Germany I really suggest getting this book.

3 out of 5 stars Too much information was not enough.......2004-11-22

I am generally a fan of the Rick Steves series and just wrote a glowing review of the Paris 2004 guidebook. But this particular entry is simply too much crammed into too small of a space. Germany deserves its own guidebook, and in fact, there are cities in Germany that probably deserve their own guidebook. By lumping all of Germany, Austria and Switzerland together, Steves fails to go into the kind of great detail about any one destination that makes the Paris 2004 book such a winner.

In usual Rick Steves form, this book attempts to answer the questions that you probably wouldn't think to ask before being on the ground in an unfamiliar land, e.g. how to buy train tickets, what the street signs mean, wie sagt man "ATM Machine" auf Deutsch, etc. And it is for this reason that I recommend these books, especially to first-time travellers who are going without a seasoned veteran to guide them.

I ended up travelling around Germany and Austria without using this book much. I bought an ADAC map of the Autobahn and drove around, taking in the various little Alpen towns and having a great time. But when I made it to Salzburg at the end of my trip, Rick Steves once again proved to be a helpful guide and I used his walking tours to navigate the city, and although I ignored his advice about the quality of different sights, I had a blast and I think the helpful tips and navigation aids in this book can get most of the credit for that.

1 out of 5 stars You're going to LOVE GERMANY! .......2004-09-24

I've been to Germany several times.....Frankfurt, Koln, the Mosel and Rhine wine tours, etc. Here are my reviews of the best guides to meet your exact needs.....I hope these are helpful and that you have a great visit! I always gauge the quality of my visit by how much I remember a year later......this review is designed to help you get the guide that will be sure YOU remember your trip many years into the future. Travel Safe and enjoy yourself to the max!

Rick Steves' books are not recommended. They may be an interesting read but their helpfulness is very poor. They don't do well on updates, transportation details, or anything but the first-time-tourist routine and even that is somewhat superficial on anything but the mega-major sites.

      Frommer's
These are time tested guides that pride themselves on being updated annually. Although I think the guides below provide information that is in more depth or more concise (depending on what the guide is known for), if your main concern is that the guide has very little old or outdated information, then this would be a good guide for you.

      Lonely Planet
Lonely Planet has City and Out To Eat Guides. They are all about the experience so they focus on doing, being, getting there, and this means they have the best detailed information, including both inexpensive and really spectacular restaurants and hotels, out-of-the-way places, weird things to see and do, the list is endless.

      Blue Guides
Without doubt, the best of the walks guides.... the Blue Guide has been around since 1918 and has extremely well designed walks with lots of unique little side stops to hit on just about any interest you have. If you want to pick up the feel of the city, this is the best book to do that for you. This is one that you end up packing on your 10th trip, by which time it is well worn.

      MapGuide
MapGuide is very easy to use and has the best location information for hotels, tourist attractions, museums, churches etc. that they manage to keep fairly up to date. It's great for teaching you how to use the public transportation system. The text sections are quick overviews, not reviews, but the strong suite here is brevity, not depth. I strongly recommend this for your first few times learning your way around the classic tourist sites and experiences. MapGuide is excellent as long as you are staying pretty much in the center of the city.

      Time Out
The Time Out guides are very good. Easy reading, short reviews of restaurants, hotels, and other sites, with good public transport maps that go beyond the city centre. Many people who buy more than one guidebook end up liking this one best!

      Let's Go
Let's Go is a great guide series that specializes in the niche interest details that turn a trip into a great and memorable experience. Started by and for college students, these guides are famous for the details provided by people who used the book the previous year. They continue to focus on providing a great experience inexpensively. If you want to know about the top restaurants, this is not for you (use Fodor's or Michelin). Let's Go does have a bewildering array of different guides though. Here's which is what:
Budget Guide is the main guide with incredibly detailed information and reviews on everything you can think of.
City Guide is just as intense but restricted to the single city.
PocketGuide is even smaller and features condensed information
MapGuide's are very good maps with public transportation and some other information (like museum hours, etc.)

      Michelin
Famous for their quality reviews, the Red Michelin Guides are for hotels & Restaurants, the Green Michelin Guides are for main tourist destinations. However, the English language Green guide is the one most people use and it has now been supplemented with hotel and restaurant information. These are the serious review guides as the famous Michelin ratings are issued via these books.

      Fodor's
Fodor's is the best selling guide among Americans. They have a bewildering array of different guides. Here's which is what:
The Gold Guide is the main book with good reviews of everything and lots of tours, walks, and just about everything else you could think of. It's not called the Gold guide for nothing though....it assumes you have money and are willing to spend it.
SeeIt! is a concise guide that extracts the most popular items from the Gold Guide
PocketGuide is designed for a quick first visit
UpCLOSE for independent travel that is cheap and well thought out
CityPack is a plastic pocket map with some guide information
Exploring is for cultural interests, lots of photos and designed to supplement the Gold guide

      3 out of 5 stars What's good is very good. What's bad...oy........2004-05-08

I'm both attracted and annoyed by Rick Steves' travel guides. I'm giving this book a 3, not because it's generally okay, but because it's an average of 1 and 5.

Steves does some things really well. His maps are really good, for instance. Rather than try to show every street (you'll have an ordinary map for that), he makes it easy to find the places you probably care about (or the ones he thinks you should care about); the museums, train station, etc. are easy to find -- like the map you'd scribble on a cocktail napkin for a friend. Plus, he's reassuring about distances from one place to another (a ten-minute walk to the museum from the train station, etc.).

He also does a good-to-excellent job at, hmm, how shall I put this -- describing the experience of a place. I haven't been to Munich, yet, and his is the only guide that tells me that the biergarten tables with no tablecloths are reserved for customers who are drinking only (no food, in other words). And to look for a vomitorium in the bathrooms (!). When I'm traveling, I'm tripped up by the "ordinary" things I didn't know -- so this sort of information is reassuring. (Why do none of the guide books tell you that "Ausfart" is the word for "car exit" on the autobahn? As a friend of ours said, "The first time I saw all those Ausfart signs, I thought, 'Wow, this is a really big city!'" Ausgang, by the way, is the word for *people*-exit, a helpful item to know when you're in an underground parking garage, looking for the way out.)

Also, Steves is better at orientation than most. I think his is the only book that says you can get tickets ahead of time for the big Bavarian castles, so you don't spend time waiting in line. That sort of stuff is incredibly useful.

On the other hand... his priorities and taste do not coincide with mine. As another reviewer pointed out, Steves gives you the itinerary *he* thinks you should follow, and ignores or disparages other destinations. Maybe he thinks that Triberg is a tourist trap, but I spent 3 days in the area (in Hornberg, a few miles north) and I thought it was both a lovely town and a great base of operations for Black Forest exploration.

What finally turned me off was realizing how differently he travels than we do. (There. That doesn't seem so negative.) Steves gives a one-day itinerary through the Black Forest, starting in Frieburg and ending in Baden-Baden. To accomplish that, he has you zoom through the Clock Musuem in an hour (we spent two, though maybe it could have been less), and 1.5 hours at the Volksbaurnhof in Gutach. That's way too little time; we spent 3 or 4 hours there on two trips (obviously, we liked the place). Yes, in an hour and a half you can walk around this open-air museum, but you won't have time to watch one of the demonstrations, or read more than a few expanatory signs. If I followed his itinerary, I'd be skimming the surface of every destination rather than experiencing the place.

I own several guidebooks to Germany. It's probably worth looking through this one, especially if you happen to be planning to visit the sights he says are worthwhile. But it's far from a complete guide to the country, and you're stuck relying on HIS opinions -- which may or may not agree with yours. I'm glad I read through this book, but it's sure not being stuffed into my backpack.

5 out of 5 stars Very Nice Book.......2000-11-23

This is one of the better books written on Taj Mahal, Taj Mahal was built by the Mughals (Muslim emporers) who were the greatest people when it comes to invent & innovate art & architecture, they (Mughals) blessed pre-British India (India & Pakistan region)with their wonderful architecture, I highly recommend it, also I think the following two books will be excellent to add to your collection

      1)Taj Mahal by Jean-Louis Nou

2)The Taj Mahal (Great Buildings) by Christine Moorcroft,

5 out of 5 stars Very Good book.......2000-10-19

This book is very well written..I just got it somedays back..& let me say that this is one of the good books I have read..it takes us back to the mystical era of the Mughals (Mughlas were Muslim emporers who invaded present India & Pakistan region & created beautiful architectures Taj Mahal (Agra, India), Badshahee Mosque(Lahore, Pakistan)) & a lot of other architectures & gardens) this books describes their (Mughals) life style...I definitely reccomend it...but the best thing you can do is go to India & Pakistan yourself & see their architecture for yourselves...during my stay in Lahore (Pakistan) I visited different Mughal architectures & one garden built my Mughals..it was wonderful..I visited a Mughal fort (in Lahore) in the fort their was a thing which really caught me...their was a very big water pool..& right in the middle of that water pool was a small square shape marble made sitting place for Mughal women & it was connected by a marble path to the end of the pool...& I was like wowwww....these Mughals were I think the only emporers in the world with a sense of building beautiful architecture..I think other emporers destroyed the architecture but never bothered to built any architecture..but the Mughals not only did they built the architecture..but they built one of the best that can be seen..I have seen Taj Mahal in Agra, India (built by Mughal emporer Shah Jehan) for his dead wife..thats really a touching piece of architecture...then there is a Mosque in Lahore (Pakistan)..Badshahee mosque..the architecture & the beauty of this mosque is wonderful..their are many other architectures (Forts & Gardens)..though most of their architecure is mosques)...you can only enjoy their architecture if you see it with your own eyes ...ok I think now I will shut up..heheh & let you enjoy this book :)

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding introduction to Mughal History.......1999-12-29

One of the most astonishing cultures in history, the Mughals created art and architecture that continue to delight and astonish. There society successfully mixed two divergent religions, Islam and Hinduism, in ways that we today can only regard with wonder.

Rothfarb has presented the most delightful and provocative introduction to time in history that I can imagine (I have read probably 45 books on the period and visited India a few times). He ties together not only Mughal culture, but India's ancient past, its religion, its mores, and culture showing the Mughals in a far wider and more accessible context than any other book I have seen. If I were to write a nonfiction book about this culture, this is the book I would want to write.

While targeted (apparently) at juveniles, it is more than suitable for adults as well.

If this is your subject, this is your book.

        Customer Reviews:

        4 out of 5 stars Nice reference.......2007-01-10

When I bought this book I had already been in the sw hobby for six years, but for some reason I had to have this book. Needs to be updated, but it offers a great and broad foundation of the hobby. It is easy to read, and has awesome pictures. Also some of the species names were different from what I have seen in most other books. ???

5 out of 5 stars Great Book for Doctors Lobby.......2006-12-16

This is a wonderful book for the lay person to read as they wait to see their doctor. The pictures are lovely. I gave it as a gift to my favorite dermatologist who happens to have a saltwater aquarium on display.

4 out of 5 stars Good Reference Book.......2006-11-03

We've used this book mostly for identification of fish that we didn't recognize at the pet store. The pictures are fantastic and it covers a broad scope of information on setting up the tank, reefs, fish and invertebrates. It gives information on what they eat, who they get along with, and what conditions they prefer. In some cases, however, the directions for caring for a certain type of fish were not as detailed as we would have liked. If you want a general saltwater reference book, this is a great investment. If you're looking for specific, detailed instructions on how to care for different things in your tank, another book might be a good supplement to this one.

4 out of 5 stars Environmental awareness approach for new hobbyists.......2006-03-13

Full of excellent information about the marine bio-sphere. Most of the information is presented in such a way that environmental awareness is passed to the reader, which will be good food-for-thought for any new hobbyists. Crisp & clear photographs are backed by descriptions of marine life, which give a clear understanding of the subjects chosen.

4 out of 5 stars Comprehensive and informative........2006-03-09

This book is a good reference book for fetermining what fish you might want to get down the road. I wouldn't recommend it for your initial tank startup as there are better books for that, but for fish ID and compatibility, it is nice. There are lots of wonderful pictures and overall good information.

2 out of 5 stars So, so book, kind of old information.......2006-09-12

This book was published in the 80s, then re-published in the 95. Most of the information is kind of old. It does not have pictures for most of the fish listed.

Another thing I don't like is the lack of common names for the fish. It is one thing to have the proper name, it is another that a big portion of them missing common names. I would say about 60% of the fish listed don't have common names.

I would not spend more than $10 for the book, considering what you get out of it.

                        5 out of 5 stars Simply Amazing!.......2006-09-29

How useful is this book? Within a fortnight of its purchase, I repaired the damaged cockbeading on my mid-Victorian/ Scotch chest of drawers using a scratch stock, and managed to open a locked cabinet door on my Victorian chiffonier by cutting a new barrel key. Prior to purchasing the book, I had contacted a local carpenter regarding fashioning a replacement cockbeading for my chest of drawers. The carpenter assured me that the job was "...very complex" and placed me on a year-and-a-half waiting list. My local locksmith was prepared to charge me $150 to open the locked cabinet door on my chiffonier. The barrel key blank cost me $12.

The book is a breath of fresh air with its emphasis on restoration using old methods, techniques, and materials rather than prescribing the usual hearty dollop of filler and varnish to get your beloved piece back to its former glory. I found the chapter devoted to colour matching to be particularly significant, and I have yet to encounter a book that delves so deeply into the matter.

The chapter entitled "Is it Really Antique?" made for a fascinating read. The Development of the English Wood Screw, Woodworking Methods, Locks, and Anatomy of a Fake are all accompanied by a bounty of useful photographs.

Truly the most useful book that I have found on the subject, and one that I reach for before all of the others when I need a question answered.

5 out of 5 stars Precise, Useful and Easy to Understand.......2000-01-03

Bennett has created a clear guide that both beginning and experienced restorators will find helpful. His techniques preserve the integrity and value of antiques by treating them conservatively. I especially appreciate Bennett's directions for formulating fillers and cleaners. If you want to do a proper job of restoring a fine antique this book is an essential tool.

This book is full of very helpful information on many aspects of furniture restoration and repair. Unlike many books on the subject it gives you the information you need without wasting your time or money.

                        Book Description

Given that the majority of Americans consume a meat, dairy, and egg-based diet its hard to swallow the supposition that humans are natural vegetarians. But after reading Plant Roots even the most die-hard will question their carnivorous habits. Comprehensively researched and uniquely presented, Plant Roots will have an influence on our dietary choices in the st century.

Plant Roots will be a great reference book for me in years to come. I love having it by my side to continue to read and go through. Many answers to my questions are all in this book. I have recommended this book to many. George Eisman R.D. is the one that brought it to my attention at the Vegetarian Summerfest 2006. He sure knows what he is talking about.

5 out of 5 stars The best treatise on veganism, environmentalism, etc........2005-01-29

This has just become one of my favorite books of all time, dealing with the subjects of vegetarianism, veganism, animal rights, ecology, the environment, world hunger and other areas. Yes, this book deals with all of these subjects. And all in one place for easy reference. This book has obviously been very well-researched and is extensively documented with numerous footnotes at the end of the book. Yet this book provides timeless (and timely) information in a very concise, and at times humorous, way. It definitely is very effective at getting the point across to anyone reading it. I highly recommend this book to everyone, both to my fellow vegans and to all the wannabes out there, as well as to everyone in between. This book provides the solid information and evidence you need in dealing with those people who constantly ask questions and who sometimes want to argue with you about our lifestyle choice. By way of comparison, in giving you the detailed information you need, this book is the M16 of books in a world of flint-lock guns. The book contains irrefutable logic. And at this price, and for being a genuine treasure trove of knowledge, it is a real bargain! Get a copy for yourself and for anyone you care about - because you will not be wanting to lend out your copy to anyone. It's that good!
As for the reviewer below, he (or she) obviously never read the book or even purchased it, to make such asinine accusations against it. This book's message is very clear and comprehensible to anyone who made it out of the first grade! This book proves, beyond ANY reasonable doubt, that we are in fact - by nature - fruit-, nut- and seed-eaters. There is no way around that. Read the book to find out why. :)

                        2 out of 5 stars A confused political diatribe.......2005-01-24

Bowlby intermingles and confuses a variety of separate issues. The book is advertised as an evaluation of why the human body is designed for eating plant foods. In fact the book wanders far afield and spends too much time discusssing issues that are not relevant. The ethical issues of eating meat, the economical issues associated with eating meat and the political issues associated with eating meat are COMPLETELY UNRELATED to whether our bodies are designed to eat meat. If our bodies are designed to eat meat, then we have to eat meat, a fact that Bowlby cannot comprehend.

5 out of 5 stars An unapologetic manifesto advocating sweeping dietary change.......2003-08-11

In Plant Roots: 101 Reasons Why The Human Diet Is Rooted Exclusively In Plants, Rex Bowlby strongly advocates the consumption of a vegan diet - one consisting of plant-based foods alone, with no meat, milk, or eggs. Articulately defending the vegetarian diet as healthier, more economical, better for the environment, and less likely to spread disease, Plant Roots is stringent and unashamed in its denouncement of the physical and social ills caused by meat, milk, and egg consumption, ranging from the callous disregard of animal (or dairy cow) life, to cultural and social issues of food processing technologies and practices, to the threat of food-borne diseases and increased bacteria resistance to antibiotics caused by eating antibiotic-treated meat. An unapologetic manifesto advocating sweeping dietary change, Plant Roots is a welcome and seminal addition to personal and professional Vegetarian Studies reading lists, as well as community and academic Health & Nutrition Studies library reference collections.

                          Book Description

"If he had lived among the Greeks, he would now be numbered among the stars." So wrote Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz in his epitaph for Francis Mercury van Helmont. Leibniz was not the only contemporary to admire and respect van Helmont, but although famous in his own day, he has been virtually ignored by modern historians. Yet his views influenced Leibniz, contributed to the development of modern science, and fostered the kind of ecumenicalism that made the concept of toleration conceivable. The progressive nature of van Helmont's thought was based on his deep commitment to the esoteric doctrines of the Lurianic Kabbalah. With his friend Christian Knorr von Rosenroth, van Helmont edited the Kabbala Denudata (1677-1684), the largest collection of Lurianic Kabbalistic texts available to Christians up to that time. Because the subject matter of this work appears so difficult and arcane, it has never been appreciated as a significant text for understanding the emergence of modern thought. However, one can find in it the basis for the faith in science, the belief in progress, and the pluralism characteristic of later western thought. The Lurianic Kabbalah thus deserves a place it has never received in histories of western scientific and cultural developments. Although van Helmont's efforts contributed to the development of religious toleration, his experience as a prisoner of the Inquisition accused of "Judaising" reveals the problematic relations between Christians and Jews during the early-modern period. New Inquisitional documents relating to van Helmont's imprisonment will be discussed to illustrate the difficulties faced by anyone advocating philo-semitism and toleration at the time. Book Description

In Holland, St. Nicholas has an assistant, Zwarte Piet - Black Pete - whose role is to give treats to good children and beatings to naughty boys and girls. Photographer Anna Fox takes over 20 color portraits of women and children dressed up in Black Pete's traditional garb, with blackened faces and red lips. The portraits, taken over a five-year period, trace a shift in Pete's image, from a threatening character to more of a clown, suggesting a sense of unease and ambiguity which surrounds his identity in contemporary Dutch culture. An essay by the Dutch writer Mieke Bal places the myth of Zwarte Piet in a broad historical and cultural context. Dimension: 10 x 12 inches, 20 color reproductions.

The book is a little off-putting. I am sure it is intentional. After hearing Anna Fox talk I understand what she was getting much better, but still it seems strange to flip through the book. Features portraits of many people, mostly women, in black face for a festival- the stares are piercing. I like her other work much better, but the book is printed and put together beautifully.

                            Book Description

Visionary? Authoritarian? Model for the West? Lee Kuan Yew, the long-time leader of Singapore, has been called all these things, and more. In these vivid memoirs, Lee takes a profoundly personal look back at the events that led to Singapore's independence and shaped its struggle for success. And, as always, he lets the chips fall where they may.In intimate detail, Lee recounts Singapore's unforgettable history. You'll be with Lee as he leads striking unionists against the colonial government; shares tea and rounds of golf with key players in Britain and Malaya; and drinks warm Anchor beer with leaders of the communist underground at secret midnight meetings. From British colonial rule through Japanese occupation in World War II, Communist insurrection, riots, independence -- and the struggles that followed -- few political memoirs anywhere have been this blunt, or this fascinating.Anyone interested in the political history of Singapore, Asia, and the modern world.

                            5 out of 5 stars Insightful!.......2006-05-14

Mr Lee Kuan Yew - or LKY - as he is fondly referred to by both admirers and critics, has been a controversial figure as easily discernible in the oxymoronic titles he is often given, such as "benevolent dictator" and "enlightened despot". But to call him such names without heavy qualification is to utter a painful half-truth.

"The Singapore Story: Memoirs of Lee Kuan Yew" aptly displays the range of LKY's sensitivity, insight, and wisdom harvested not only from his personal experience from WWII onwards but also from the experiences of others. As a young Singaporean who has lived in Singapore all her life I thought I was very familiar with this iconic figure who I had often read about from his speeches, newspapers and textbooks. However, his memoirs displayed another angle of his personal self which is rarely seen in the media.

I think it's a waste that not many young Singaporeans have read this book. Perhaps they should. His writing is powerful but easy to read, and I found myself reading it into the small hours of the night. This book would also appeal to you if you're interested in Singapore, its policies, and its history.

                            5 out of 5 stars Outstanding .......2006-01-02

This is simply the most amazing and interesting biography, i have ever read. What makes Lee's narrative interesting are his crisp observations supported by official British documents made public after 35 years.

This volume is childhood up to Singapore's dumping by Malaysia.

5 out of 5 stars FORTHRIGHT! COURAGEOUS!! CONSCIENTIOUS!!!.......2002-11-28

Reading Lee Kuan Yew's "The Singapore Story" is analogous to swimming in an ocean of enlightenment. It is a unique piece of writing. Candid and down-to-earth, Mr. Yew's memoirs showed that courage, faith, hope, and perseverance are not only enough to transform a man, but an entire nation. Singapore's victories over colonialism and communism showcased this fact. I no longer wonder why Presidents, Prime Ministers, and other top-notchers find this book irresistible.

5 out of 5 stars One side of "The Singapore Story".......2002-08-01

He will go down in history as one of Asia's most famous (or infamous) statesmen. "The Singapore Story" tells one side of the story - Lee's. Former Singaporean prime minister Lee Kuan Yew has long been acclaimed for his outspoken persona and alert and thorough intellect. However, it is not certain that he is fully aware of his impact (or maybe he is) on other people - specially on Tunku Abdul Rahman. With this, the inaugural volume of his autobiography, he also proves himself as an charming and pleasant narrator - and therein lies the problem. The tone of the book is almost benign - but was her really. His tale begins as an distinguished student from a non pretentious bourgeois, English speaking home (this proves problematic in the future as Lee makes his way around the Chinese speaking communities).

Lee's deftly moves to recount how his education was discontinued by the Japanese occupation in World War II - of which he also elaborates how it taught him the many life lessons and impressions he would take into the future political and personal trials he would undergo. After a brief experiment as a black-market entrepreneur during the war (for which he was able to support his family as well as other interests), he decided to make his way to England after the Japanese defeat - to become a practitioner of the Law. He recounts as well how he managed to convinced Cambridge University to admit - not just himself - but his future wife Choo as well - they were both eventually called to the Bar in England. Upon passing the British rendition of the bar examination, Lee decides to return home - to Singapore. Lee is quickly embroiled in the complex labyrinth of Singaporean politics of independence while both fighting and using - the Communist Party. If you read between the lines, it is clear that Lee was anxious to be rid of this red menace while playing "The Prince" and playing sides against each other.

Convinced that the red threat from Singapore could only be controlled by assimilation into the federation of Malaysia, the Tunku entertains the call by Lee to form Malaysia. Lee's story, told in extended and obviously well documented detail really zeroes in on his dream of uniting Singapore with Malaysia - only for it to come apart in the seams - of which he is not completely blameless. Lee bitterly relates his disappointment over Malaysian Prime Minister Tunku Abdul Rahman's decision to ungraciously expel Singapore from the recently formed Malaysian federation. Lee wishes to play the victim. If you treat each side as a discourse - with its own set of truth creating mechanisms (ontology) and societal formulas - it will be quickly evident the Lee's formula is not welcome in the Tunku's Malaysia. No matter which side of the argument the reader places him/herself, Lee posed a threat to everything that the Tunku and his cadre held dear. As much as Lee viewed (or perceived) the ills or threat that the Tunku's cadre (if not the Tunku himself) represented, Lee had to admit that he was not in his "zone" - he was out of his element. He did, in effect, break a trust not to engage in federal politics (as originally agreed) - predictably causing the ire of the Tunku. It is the chickens coming home to roost.

While gracious towards the Tunku, Lee turns his harshest appraisals of other politicians in Kuala Lumpur - zeroing in on the close cadre of the Tunku - the book goes into very informative detail in this regard. Lee's wonderfully in-depth character analyses and impressions only foreshadows volume two (Lee, Kuan Yew From Third World to First - The Singapore Story: 1965 - 2000 Singapore and the Asian Economic Boom New York: HarperCollins Publishers, Inc., 2000 - also available on Amazon.com) describes an entire generation of world class leaders. It seems that most leaders were mindful of this as several former presidents, secretaries of state, prime ministers, and foreign ministers have sang the praises to Mr. Lee. There is no argument from this reviewer that the praise is well deserved and the reader of this and the subsequent book will come to know Lee as crafty but exceptionally brilliant political animal - but there are always more sides to a story.
