No frills, but comprehensive.......1999-08-10
If there's a walkway, path, or trail in North Carolina, it's probably in this book. Perhaps more remarkably, the author has hiked every one and measured almost all of them. The descriptions are from his personal journals, augmented by some researched background information on many parks, forests, and important trails.
To convey this huge quantity of information in a relatively compact book, the author has adopted a shorthand style that's reminiscent of telegrams and classified ads. The only maps are two large foldouts that show the general locations of the trailheads. However, the lack of trail maps and the terse style make it difficult to understand how various trails interconnect (until you buy the topos). If that bothers you, try Randy Johnson's "Hiking North Carolina."

It was an incredibly well drawn piece of work, and fun to color, too! It must have been a Herculean effort for the artist NOT to color it in himself! It BEGS to be colored! My children can't keep their hands off it,so I have to put it up high(it's mine, you know)Thank you for a wonderful time!

MOVIE POSTERS OF THE SILENT FILM ERA TO COLOR is, as noted on the cover, a 'coloring book' in the Stemmer House 'International Design Library' series. The black and white renderings of original film posters, by Rex Schneider, are accurate and quite well executed. In some instances where posters no longer exist, they have been newly designed in the style of the period. They provide a marvellous introduction and reference for all interested in the silent film era, its stars, and the broad range of art styles 'ballyhooing' the movies from the dawn of cinema to the first 'talkies', in addition to the good fun provided all who enjoy coloring. Schneider's uncanny caricatures of such celebrated movie comedians as Laurel & Hardy, Mabel Normand, and Buster Keaton (all represented in the book), are remarkable! The book is further complemented with notes on the individual films, an overview of the evolution of movie advertisements, and a guide for coloring the posters. The buyer is also at liberty to reproduce any of the posters for private, non-commercial use.

I read this book which I rented from the library and was not impressed. There are a series ofthese books which I have read alot of. But each one seems no different from the others in the series. This series makes the Golden Retriever seem like it needs the same requirements as the Rottweiler. It is all basic things with very little help.

Book Description
A richly photographed full-color wish book, The Potting Shed from Smith & Hawken celebrates the room that is as much a workshop for the gardener as the kitchen is for the cook. Practical and romantic, idea-filled and beautiful, it is imbued with the Smith & Hawken sensibility: quality, authenticity, and a return to the old ways. There are chapters on the history of the potting shed. The gardener's tools, and how to store and care for them. And seasonal joys and labors, including spring--with tips on germinating seeds, using cloches, transplanting seedlings; summer--the time for picking flowers for potpourri; fall--how to dry herbs, plant spring-blooming bulbs, and gather seeds for next year; and winter--when it's time to relax in front of the woodstove and pore over catalogs. Whether the "potting shed" is a cleared-off space on a kitchen counter, a corner in the garage, an old table and wash basin against the side of the house--or an actual shed--The Potting Shed is every gardener's dream of where the garden begins. Photographs by Hugh Palmer.

Perspectives and philosophys of Gardening Sheds.......1997-01-29
After having read this book, I had no more idea on how to build a shed than I did before I had read it. However, I did now know what should be included in a shed. It would appear, that as a garden, the shed is as individualized as ones dreams. This book is a look into others dreams of perfection. It allowed me to peak into others imaginations just long enough to glimpse the very special places people go to be alone and create

What a disappointment - Don't judge a book by it's cover.......2002-01-15
This is among 5 books I purchased to help me plan setting up my potting shed. The cover picture, and a review, prompted me to purchase. Truly, this is not a helpful book. I also purchased eri Dunn's Potting Places, and THAT's a helpful book, go there to read my review. Penelope O'Sullivan's book, however, seems directed to a group of gardeners I apparently don't fit into. Her ideas are not complete, she is vague, photos are OK, but not inspiring, and some of them are just outrageous - the second from the last photo is of the most ridiculous "cutting room" I have ever seen, and she raves about this lavish room's "practicality", when it is clear by the way the room was propped, that it is completely unuseful. There were columns on either side of the sink! I almost flipped. The inclusion of this photo speaks volumes about the author and her perception of the what the reader is looking for. Sorry, Penelope, but you missed the mark for this reader, and I discourage anyone from choosing this book.
This book will inspire you to want a garden shed........2000-08-05
This book is a necessity for any gardener who is thinking of building a potting shed. This is the book every person needs who has said, "I have an idea in my head and I can't express it," or "I know what I want, but the visualization of it hasn't come to me yet." This book, with its beautiful pictures of all types and kinds of sheds and potting areas will enable anyone to dialogue with their builder or landscaper. This is definitely a book designed for the visual. If you are inclined to read the captions, a gardener will not be disappointed as the author is knowledgeable about the names of the planting material. All the examples are of real gardens with real people using them. This is a book that will be picked up again and again for inspiration and ideas on putting plants and structures together. Highly recommended for any gardeners' reference library

Wonderful children's mystery with depth and creativity.......2007-01-25
I have loved this book since I was a child. A family moves to a New Orleans plantation and is virtually secluded. The plantation is old, ricketey and full of mystery. The children are trying to figure out a curious set of problems that eventually turn into the pieces of a murder plot. Like any good book, some parts will make your heart race, especially because the main characters (a brother and sister) are pre-teen age. The children are soon in danger because of what they know, and as the reader you are taken with them as they figure out how to expose the evil while saving themselves. This is not a teeny bopper book, it is a well written, creativity inspiring, nailbiting who-done-it with thought provoking characters and a plot that keeps you guessing. I read it over and over as a kid and plan on reading it to my children, too. It has been at least 15 years since I last read the book but I would love to get my hands on it and read it again. Highly recommended by me: a mom, former teacher, and kid at heart!

Book Description
Michael Harker drove past old barns on gravel roads and blacktop highways for years. He generally dismissed them as obsolete outbuildings until November 1993, when he felt compelled to photograph a windmill in Clutier, Iowa. This single photograph launched him on a seven-and-a-half-year mission to document Iowa's barns and all they represent. The result is Harker's Barns: Visions of an American Icon.
Each of the seventy-five black-and-white images featured in Harker's Barns beautifully and heartbreakingly captures the glory and ultimate demise of one of rural America's most enduring icons. From square to round, wood to brick, Dutch to Swedish, occupied or abandoned, the barns documented in this stunning collection are a testament to a passing way of life that was once the lifeblood of Iowa and the Midwest.
Complementing Harker's photographs are vignettes by poet and writer Jim Heynen. Both whimsical and endearing, each vignette treats barns as organic and intelligent entities, reflecting the living history that can be found inside each rural structure.
Iowa's barns are disappearing and with them a way of life; Harker's Barns brilliantly documents their heritage for future generations. As Jim Heynen says, A good photograph can maintain an old barn through blizzards and hail storms and tornadoes. It is the best support beam and wood preservative an old barn can have.

The ophthalmology department at the University of Iowa is full of talented individuals. One of the ophthalmic photographers in our department is a historical photographer. Visit his website at http://www.harkerphotography.com to learn more about this outstanding artist who is preserving Iowa's history on film.
Harker states:
The images showcased here represent my philosophy as a citizen of Iowa and as a photographer. I am a documentary photographer whose main goal is to record Iowa's historically significant architecture from the 1800's before it disappears forever. My subjects are barns, one-room schools, courthouses, rural churches, banks, and houses from rural areas and small towns.
I work in large format black and white utilizing the scientific technique of Ansel Adams' Zone System to create images of outstanding technical quality. I draw my artistic abilities from my more than thirty year career as a professional photographer.
I intend to leave a lasting legacy in the annals of American Photography through my dedication to the people of Iowa - to visually preserve the early citizens' quality craftsmanship when they built these "cathedrals" of wood and stone.
My images are little time machines carrying forward to future generations of Iowans the dedication of their forbearers. People born a century from now will be able to look back in time to what was once glorious and real.
About Love.......2005-01-14
Thank whatever gods you worship for university presses. They undertake the publication of books, not because they expect them to be profitable, but because the books need to be published. "Harker's Barns" is such a book. It will never make a profit. It would probably have been too expensive for its creators to have self-published. And yet it deserves to be published, not just for what it tells us about barns or a vanishing agrarian society or even about the ways of photography, but for what it tells us about love.
The book consists of seventy-five black and white pictures of barns and other farm buildings. Those who care about black and white photography will admire the edge between peeling paint and dry wood and the texture of sun and wind bleached wood. They will also admire the sense of time hidden in some of the pictures. I am thinking of a photograph of a barn, obviously taken at the smallest possible f/stop, to get the depth of field needed to have the barn etched sharply from front to rear. And yet as a result of the long exposure necessary with this small opening, the weeds in front of the barn, blown about by a passing wind, are ablur.
This is a book about love, make no mistake. It is about the love of the photographer for his subject and what it represents in his mind, and it is about the death of a loved one. And it's about the love that many of the people who helped in the project must have felt for the subject, and perhaps for the vision of the photographer. And of course, it is about the love, perhaps unspoken and unacknowledged, of the farmer for his farm.
The photographer laments the gradual loss of the small family farm and expresses his hope that this book can somehow preserve it. And yet the photographer must know that this is a fatal economic disease from which there is no hope of recovery. The small Iowa farm that the author loves makes little economic sense in a modern society that requires efficiency in everything it consumes. Who of us will pay twice as much for a tomato from a merchant who tells us that such a price will support the farmer who continues to till the land in a way that makes no sense in an industrial society, but does so because that farmer wants to follow his heart rather than his reason?
Normally the text that accompanies a book of photographs is an unnecessary garnish, designed to fill space. But Jim Heynen is a poet, and his words are short and pithy and help us to look at the subject from a slightly different viewpoint. For example, he says "Windows in a round barn follow the light of the seasons, thus giving a sense of agreement with nature."
Even if you don't like black and white photography, even if you don't like farms, the very idea of this book may appeal to you. For it is clearly a work of love, and perhaps the reader can learn to love like the photographer.

An easy-to-read bio on today's most renowned Asian athlete........1996-10-04
This large-print biography is intended for children. The
rather slim volume opens with an introduction on Michael's
courageous win at the '89 French Open, then launches into a
account of his early life and career up to 1992. Although
understandably short on detail, the pictures are what make
this book a real find, as there are many childhood photos
and snapshots out of the Chang family album.
