a small study is presented of the 15 genera in the subfamily Pitcairnioideae. With details of therir characteristics, along with photographs in situ, in order to aid in their classification. In Ecuador, this subfamily is comprised of only Puya and Pitcairnia. The Genus Puya with 34 species 1 variety and 2 hybrids and the Genus Pitcairnia with 83 species, 11 varieties and 1 hybrid. Each species and variety is illustrated by at least one photo. In this opus, 14 new species, 4 varieties and 1 form of Pitcairnia and 9 new species of Puya and 2 new hybrids have been published).

Fantastic guides! Pocket size and easy to follow. The writers are hilarious and the shopkeepers are very appreciative when you walk in carrying the guide. They give you ideas on where to go, what to eat and where to shop, that other guides do not provide!

The only thing missing is an actual map!

A great book for new sheltie owners........2004-08-28

After losing our beloved dog TJ after 16 years of great companionship, I was looking for a good book to get back into the swing of owning a puppy. This book is very good at covering all the basics of dog ownership and also touches on the advanced aspects of ownership. All the info. is up to date ( unlike the Sheltie "bible" Sheltie Talk...which hasnt been updated since the mid '80's.). Very nicely illustrated with drawings and color photos..with a nice back section to put in important info about your sheltie and a nice baby photo!

great pictures, little information!.......2000-08-18

"the guide to owning a shetland sheepdog" has a great deal of pictures, great quality! i was disappointed, however, by the lack of information it provided. the words were printed large and most of the page taken up by pictures! i did, however, think the information about the history of the breed was very interesting. the sections on grooming, breeding, etc., were short and not very detailed.

Colorful book but disappointing content.......1999-12-30

I loved the great full color shots of the Shelties featured in this book, but was highly disappointed by the largely commercial content. A large section of the book is devoted to pushing name brand products for dental health. Otherwise, it is a fair book for the price and does have some relevant information about Shelties.

Great info, excellent pictures, captures almost everything.......1998-05-27

This book is easy to read with beautiful color pictures and fully laminated. I received it from my breeder when purchasing our first Sheltie. It has been most helpful in understanding the breed. It is not too large a book and can easily be read in an evening. We thoroughly enjoyed it!

If you're familiar with the wealth of information in Bell's other books about games you'll be extremely disappointed with "Board and Table Game Antiques" it's just not informative or interesting.

Lots of ideas and basic houseplant info.......2005-03-20

I have several books on houseplants, but this one is a little bit different. Other houseplant books are an "encyclopedia" of the different kinds of plants and also includes information on care, propagation, etc. This particular book doesn't go into detail on very many specific plants, so if that's what you are looking for, I would suggest "The House Plant Encyclopedia" by Jantra/Kruger or John Evans's "The Complete Book of Houseplants".

However, this is one of my favorite houseplant books. Although it contains information on care and propagation, it contains lots of ideas for arranging plants and making small gardens. The gardens it covers include:

Tabletop gardens
Ivy Topiaries
Orchids
Holiday Plants
Forcing bulbs
Windowsill gardens
Seasonal Gardens
Plant Collections
Exotic and Artful
Tropicals
Decorating with Plants

Since the book is a "Better Homes and Gardens" publication, it also includes plenty of photos of rooms with plants and flowers. I thought I was running out of room for more houseplants, but some of the rooms they show have quite a number of plants and are truly "Indoor Gardens". I think those rooms are inspiring because plants can really bring a room to life and make it comfortable unlike anything else.

If you want to add some indoor gardens to your house, I recommend this book. It will give you ideas other than just sticking your plant in a pot and sitting it in the window!
