Book Description

The European explorers who first visited the Northwest Coast of North America assumed that the entire region was virtually untouched wilderness whose occupants used the land only minimally, hunting and gathering shoots, roots, and berries that were peripheral to a diet and culture focused on salmon. Colonizers who followed the explorers used these claims to justify the displacement of Native groups from their lands. Scholars now understand, however, that Northwest Coast peoples were actively cultivating plants well before their first contact with Europeans. This book is the first comprehensive overview of how Northwest Coast Native Americans managed the landscape and cared for the plant communities on which they depended.

Bringing together some of the world's most prominent specialists on Northwest Coast cultures, Keeping It Living tells the story of traditional plant cultivation practices found from the Oregon coast to Southeast Alaska. It explores tobacco gardens among the Haida and Tlingit, managed camas plots among the Coast Salish of Puget Sound and the Strait of Georgia, estuarine root gardens along the central coast of British Columbia, wapato maintenance on the Columbia and Fraser Rivers, and tended berry plots up and down the entire coast.

With contributions from ethnobotanists, archaeologists, anthropologists, geographers, ecologists, and Native American scholars and elders, Keeping It Living documents practices, many unknown to European peoples, that involve manipulating plants as well as their environments in ways that enhanced culturally preferred plants and plant communities. It describes how indigenous peoples of this region used and cared for over 300 different species of plants, from the lofty red cedar to diminutive plants of backwater bogs.

A text tightly packed with information and concepts. Not an easy read, but satisfying. Concept of using Native American horticulture techniques is an attractive technique for saving our natural areas while still producing food. Should be required reading for horticulture programs in our colleges.

This book was extremely helpful in planning my trip to Colorado. The pictures in it are so beautiful that it helped influence my decisions as to what places to visit. An added benefit to the book is that I can refer back to it and look at the beautiful pictures in it to remind me of the places I visited. The history covered, the descriptions of the places all influenced me as to where I would visit...and it did not disappoint. I will definitely buy other books by Insight Guides to wherever I may go next. The information was extremely helpful and the pictures are so wonderful that I sometimes pull out the book just to look at where I have been. Sigh!!!!

            Book Description

In these eighteen illuminating essays, some of Colorado's most accomplished novelists, essayists, and poets write in intimate detail about their most poignant experiences in the Colorado wilderness. Readers are given access—both physically and spiritually—to settings that inspire reverence for and contemplation about one's relationship to the land. From above tree line in the Rawah Mountains down into the broad San Luis Valley, from the Western Slope to the high plains in the east, the reader is taken on a vivid journey through a rich assortment of Colorado's awe-inspiring landscapes.

Essays by Tom Noel, Fred Baca, Kristen Iversen, and Reyes Garcia are historical in makeup, while those by Sangeeta Reddy, Merrill Gilfillan, and Amy England feature engaging spiritual and philosophical explorations, even epiphanies. Reg Saner and Nick Sutcliffe share experiences of pitting themselves against nature. And in the tradition of Thoreau, John Muir, and Annie Dillard, all of these essayists explore the intense and vibrant relationships people have with the wilderness.

Sites of Insight belongs on the bookshelves of tourists, outdoor enthusiasts, and Coloradoans—both longtime residents and newcomers—who seek to apprehend something in nature that is larger than themselves.

I delved into these essays soon after the collection was published and re-read my favorite essays when I travel. Doing this adds meaning and enhances the enjoyment of my visits to these spiritual sites of Colorado. I especially enjoy reading and re-reading Fred Baca's essay on the San Luis Valley. For any traveler who loves the unspoiled sites of Colorado, this is a must read.

Grizzly Adams was one of the Old West's most famous frontiersmen, and he and his California Menagerie were one of P. T. Barnum's leading attractions. His years in the wild Sierra Nevada were filled with hair-raising escapes from wild animals and incredible exploits of courage and daring. Book Description

The new 2004 Edition of The Charlton Standard Catalogue of Canadian Government Paper Money will be released in July, 2003. The previous edition sold out early, resulting in the preparation of the new book ahead of the normal schedule.

Few government note collecting categories have been untouched by price changes. Most of the changes have been increases, but there are also a few decreases where supplies on the market have increased or collector interest has stalled. Changes have not been universal, but restricted to selected note issues.

Among Newfoundland issues, there has been a conspicuous increase in demand for 1920 $1 and $2 treasury notes, with prices pushing upward. Province of Canada notes have moved upward again, while action on Dominion notes is more selective. Some issues have not shown much change; others, including the 1878 and 1912 issues, have moved forward at least for selected grades. Common varieties of the 1923 $1 notes have advanced in high grades while giving up a little ground in conditions below VF, whereas $2 notes of the same issue show increases in better grades with little change in lower grades. Dealers report that there are plenty of well circulated 1923 $1 notes available in relation to collector demand.

The 1935 first issue of the Bank of Canada seems unstoppable, with high grade notes in the higher denominations climbing sharply higher. A 1935 French $100 note in AU/UNC condition recently sold for $19,500 plus tax, prompting a dramatic hike for that particularly rare issue. The 1937 Bank of Canada notes have shown more modest increases for selected notes.

Among the more recent Bank of Canada issues, many of the asterisk, X and insert replacement notes have shown sharp gains while the regular issues have been generally steady. Additional insert note prefixes have been added, with their number ranges, while the serial number ranges of others have been tightened up using new information from ongoing research.

Among the "back of the book" specialty notes, number 1 and solid serial number notes continue to advance, while the millions - numbered notes have given up a little ground. A new type of error note, with multiple serial numbers, has been added to the listings and priced. At the same time, notes with missing OSD's have been deleted as it has been discovered recently that the OSD's can easily be removed without a trace by a commercial cleaning compound. Book Description

This book brings current research on oral traditional poetry to bear on a recurrent biblical prophetic metaphor: the mourning earth. Tracing persistence and flexibility in phraseological and thematic patterning within a set of nine prophetic compositions, the study explores in each passage the particular expression and literary impact of the metaphor and its attendant themes and motifs. Since consideration is given to the diachronic dimensions of the nine texts, the study serves as an illustration of the operation of an oral or oral-derived aesthetic within the biblical prophetic traditions over a range of historical settings as well as prophetic genres.

3 out of 5 stars Painters of the Ashcan School.......2005-06-19

Was VERY disappointed that the color plates that were in the hardcopy of this book are only in black and white in the paperback version. This makes the use of this book for Art History study irrelevant. How can one understand the Ashcan School's painterly technique without color illustrations!!!

                                  Book Description

This book is a literary biography of Shen Yueh, a statesman, historian, poet, and devout lay defender of both Buddhism and Taoism. His active career spanned three successive dynasties (Liu-Sung, Nan-Ch'i, and Liang), whose capitals were located in the lower Yangtze city of Chien-k'ang (modern Nanking). The title "Reticient Marquis" (Yin-hou) was awarded him posthumously by the Liang Emperor Wu, who, though owing his own rise to power partly to Shen's bold counsel, had found him less than forthcoming from that point onward. Shen was indeed very reserved, and continually tortured by the conflicting claims of his ascetic Buddhist ideals and his love for luxury, his chameleon-like ability to preserve his influence through three regimes, and his high social and political status. Richard B. Mather provides the first full description in a Western language of Shen's life and thought and supplies numerous translations of his surviving letters, memorials, poems, and essays.

Because Shen was often in the center of controversy over matters of social, literary, and religious significance, his life may be read as an embodiment of some of the major issues and developments in the south during China's early middle ages. Professor Mather deals successively with all aspects of his life--his role as historian, courtier, poet, Taoist hermit, and Buddhist.
