5 out of 5 stars Delightful.......2004-03-05

"Leaves in Myth, Magic & Medicine" is a delightful book that will bring readers years of pleasure. Like nature itself, the magestic beauty contained within is revealed slowly in layers. More than just a beautiful picture book, the text for each leaf portrait is rich yet concise. "Leaves in Myth, Magic & Myth" is a wonderful monograph to give to naturalists, environmentalists, folklorists, herbalists, family or friends who want to widen their horizons while deepening their appreciation for trees.

5 out of 5 stars Truly unique.......2000-09-08

This original and unique book was written by an 87 year old retired librarian. Ms. Vitale devoted 30 years to researching and creating this wonderful portrait of leaves. The 110 leaf specimens are all grown in American soil. The author includes fascinating information on tree lore, medicine, botany and so much more. This book brought me hours of pleasure and is also a great reference book. I highly recommend this book to anyone who has an interest and love for trees and/or all aspects of nature.

5 out of 5 stars A True Work of Art!.......1999-12-30

Good Lord, this book is absolutely stunning! What a find! Getting this book as a holiday gift is indeed a good argument for writing an accurate self-description on one's wish list - I said I loved leaves and I got this amazing book which I never even knew existed. The ink autoprints are so finely detailed, it's hard to believe they are really printed off living leaves. Meeting the woman/artist/botanist who so lovingly (obviously) and painstakingly created these prints would be an honor and truly fascinating. This is a case of art imitating yet surpassing nature by making you really SEE and understand its wonder.

5 out of 5 stars Leaves surpasses expectations with its rich descriptions........1999-05-21

110 specimens are the result of Alice Vitale's life-long avocation and work. The leaf drawings are exquisite and each herb is delightfully presented with a smattering of folklore, origins, medicinal uses, quotes and poems. Some very obscure herbs are covered in this compendium.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful handprints of leaf forms & enchanting anecdotes.......1998-10-09

What do you do with a 4-hour layover in the Denver airport? Well, you browse the book shop and if you're lucky you find this gem on the shelf. The hand printed leaf forms are perfection in every way, and each page brings magical anecdotes about the plant forms, odd myths, medicinal uses, and sweet little graphics to enhance the overall feel of the book. From it's square hefty shape, right down to the dusting of soft green tones on the page edges, this book is a delight and I'd recommend it to anyone who loves and appreciates natural botanical forms and enjoys the unusual information this insightful writer has gathered over the years. In the very back on the dust jacket, there is a photo of the author, a lovely woman, who at age 87 declares this is her first book! I love owning this and have bought several copies for friends as gifts. At $20 plus some change here at Amazon.com you can't go wrong. A superb value!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent guide to seeing Austria.......2006-02-10

Excellent guide to seeing Austria from behind the wheel.
This review is for the 1st edition, 2004 printing.

Excellent guide to seeing Austria with a sports car or an RV. You will enjoy some great driving tours and routes through this historical region of Central Europe.

Frommers has recently come out with more "Best-Loved Driving Tours" series ... guides that are not very inexpensive, but are very well researched and quite comprehensive. One will have plenty of driving tours and routes to chose from, whether you like arts and museums, scenic roads and breathtaking views, urban towns and shopping, or just want to experience a regione's culture and life.

Unlike the other Frommer guides that are fatter and heavier, this little book gives you not too many specifics on lodging or eating. It is geared strictly for the person behind the wheel and her or his passengers.

I have had a great experience using this guide and will recommend it to anyone who can afford it. Also, you might want to check to see if your library carries it and check it out for the duration of your visit abroad.

When I backpacked 4 months through Europe I had a copy of the Lonely Planet for Europe (a thick and heavy book) because it covered more cities and esoteric towns, a ripped chapters of all the international youth hostals Europe of the countries I visited, and as primary guide for nominal cities and capitals I used Frommers (ripped the book and kept only chapters of countries planning to visit - so I can keep the weight down).

      Book Description

Shakespeare's associations with Stratford-upon-Avon are well known, but few know that he was equally at home in London, the city in which he worked and lived for much of his life. References to London's streets, inns, and theaters litter Shakespeare's plays and poetry, revealing how deeply the city influenced his work.

This book brings together 20 walks exploring 16th century London, including Westminster, St. Paul's Cathedral, the Globe Theater, St. James' Palace, the Tower of London, and Hampton Court. They cover the whole of Central London from Shoreditch to Deptford, taking in the City, Clerkenwell, King's Cross, Holborn, Piccadilly, Oxford Circus, and the South Bank.

As well as exploring the London that Shakespeare knew, the walks also cover the theaters of modern London, including the West End, the Barbican Centre, the South Bank Centre, and the Young and Old Vic theatres, where great directors have successfully staged Shakespeare's plays over many centuries.

Shakespeare expert Nicholas Robins guides and entertains throughout, taking us back in time to an era when theater dominated artistic life. Using evocative excerpts from Shakespeare's plays, he reveals the inns where Falstaff drinks and carouses in Henry IV, the magical woods that Oberan and Titania roam in A Midsummer Night's Dream, and the brooding darkness exerted by The Tower in Richard III.

This guide is illustrated with specially-commissioned, full-color photographs and is enriched with atmospheric 16th century engravings. Each walk is supported with an easy-to-follow map highlighting places of interest along each route.

With its enlightening combination of historical information and literary insight, Walking Shakespeare's London offers visitors a fascinating way to discover the roots of modern London.

--20 walks covering London from Deptford to Great Portland Street and from Shoreditch to Hampton Court

--Illustrated with specially-commissioned color photographs and original engravings of Shakespeare's period.

--The walks take in major landmarks including St. Paul's Cathedral, the Tower of London, Hampton Court, the Globe Theatre, St. James's Palace, and Westminster.

          5 out of 5 stars Solid Shakespeare.......2007-05-19

I thought Shakespeare of London by Marchette Chute was an excellent biography for several reasons. She wrote in a very readable, engaging style which was easy to follow and understand. Prior to reading this book, I had read a lot of information about Shakespeare. Initially, when I started reading this book I was a little put off by the "just-the-facts-mam" style, but the more I read the more I appreciated the biographer telling the facts she knew without overindulging in assumptions based on these facts, as other more recent biographers have done. I also really appreciated how she fully grounded Shakespeare in his time and place and vocation. As a lit student in college, all I ever heard about was Shakespeare's literary genius as a playwright; the fact that he remained a prominant actor in his company during the entire time he was writing plays was completely glossed over. This book, which never disregards Shakespeare as an actor, was something of a revelation to me. At times I felt her potrayal of Shakespeare as a person may have been a bit naive because she never attributed any remotely bad characteristic to him, but overall, I thought the biography was exceptionally well done. I would highly recommend it to anyone who wants solid, unbiased information about the Shakespeare of London.

5 out of 5 stars Charm to Spare.......2005-02-23

Shakespeare of London not only has the most plain old-fashioned charm of any Shakespeare bio I've ever read, it helps make sense of the man and his work using details of the world he lived in and the people he knew in a way that more popular books of the bard just do not. He not only comes alive - he lives up to expectations!

5 out of 5 stars Vivid description of a fascinating life.......2005-01-24

Chute has written a terrific account of a difficult life. Biographies of Shakespeare are difficult in that there is so little known of his life. This is unusual -- and somewhat ironic, given the subject matter -- when one takes into account the Elizabethan's propensity for journaling. But Chute is able to place Shakespeare firmly within his time, making few assumptions, but presenting the known facts of Shakespeare's life in a lively and fascinating manner. She strongly establishes the assumption that Shakespeare was considered one of London's finest actors and also places context around the performance of the plays. What is most fascinating is how Chute gives a glimpse into the contemporary response to Shakespeare's writings. While Shakespeare's "competitors" -- that is, his contemporary playwrights -- may have appreciated the breadth and scale of his writing, to a certain extent, they looked down upon the popularity of his plays. Just like today, the so-called elite of our society tend to overlook those writings or performances that are appreciated by a mass audience.
Where Chute falls down somewhat is that, like so many biographers, she over-apologizes for her subject. In Chute's vivid description, Shakespeare, seemingly, could do no wrong. Time and again, Chute refutes the contemporary criticisms that were made of Shakespeare's writings. Fault can be found in geniuses, as well as hacks.
Her book ends perhaps one chapter too late. After Shakespeare was finished professionally, he retired to a quiet life in Stratford. The only extant writing that refers to Shakespeare's final years are lawsuits that appear with his name. While it does give a minimal sense of Shakespeare's activities, it does not make for very interesting reading and, in fact, places an overemphasis on perhaps meaningless records. But this minimal criticism aside, Chute's book overall gives a wonderful sense of a fascinating person living in a fascinating time.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best..........2004-08-10

For some reason I have been obtaining and reading biographies of William Shakespeare lately. This book, and the recent biography by Peter Levi, are the ones I have been most satisfied with.

The real strength of Professor Chute's book is her insistence on placing Shakespeare accurately as one of the most famous ACTORS of his day. On lists of the companies of players he often appears first or second. Now, as Prof. Chute makes clearer than anyone else, this tells us a lot about the man. Prominent actors not only had to be healthy and athletic, they had to be great fencers... the audience expected to see incredible swordplay, not fakery... wonderful dancers... the performance always ended with the cast doing elaborate ensemble dances as well as individual specialties... and expert instrumentalists or singers... the play began with a concert lasting about half an hour. All this in addition to being able to play well a variety of parts (including several parts in the same performance) on very short notice and with very short preparation.

Prof. Chute is sound and grounded about many aspects of Shakespeare's life that lead other biographers to wild surmises. I suspect she is about the only biographer to understand how Shakespeare's marriage worked. No matter how much you have read about Shakespeare, you will find many new insights and perspectives in this book.

5 out of 5 stars Superb evocation of Shakespeare and his times.......2000-02-26

We know very little about William Shakespeare. He wrote in a time after the invention of the printing press, but before the invention of newspapers and magazines, so the sort of journalism which we rely on today to tell us more than we want to know about the inner lives of show-business figures did not exist during his lifetime.

Anyone who wants to write a full-length biography of this man, one of the greatest writers of our planet, has two choices. She can either make up stuff along the way, as countless Shakespeare biographers have done since the 1600s, or she can stick to the fragmentary facts and fit them into a picture of the social structure and life that Shakespeare lived in. This is what Chute does in her now out-of-print classic, and as readers of this review can see, I think she did a superb job.

Chute's book is superb not only because she is a vivid writer, not only because she tells us why certain things were the way they were, but because she respects the people she is writing about. When she tells us why Elizabethan "players" and their property managers liked tawny-orange dye for their costumes, she not only tells us why they liked it (it was a "color-fast" dye which would not fade) but conveys to us some of the combination of freedom and limits which made up Elizabethan society. The men and women of London were people who, on the one hand, could not buy the color-stable, wash-and-wear clothes we wear without a thought today, but on the other hand, if they could find a good dye or could afford to wear a bright color, they could gaudy themselves up in a way which grownups are too shy to do nowadays. As always, something has been lost and something has been gained, and Chute knows this and doesn't write history on the basis of "look at how many mistakes those poor little people made" or "look at all those great heroes of the past." They are men and women and children who could have learned from us, and we can learn from them. All of them, Shakespeare first among them but not the only one.

                5 out of 5 stars Excellent resource.......2004-04-18

This book is an excellent reference book to keep and to look at whenever you want information on any type of parrot kept in aviculture. Every bird had a good clear picture and a description giving length & weight as well as origin and status. She describes the appearance of the immature of each species, indicates clutch size, incubation time & fledging time if you are interested in breeding.

Each species is listed under the common name, as well as the scientific name and also gives the German and Dutch common names.

I have no hesitation in recommending this book to any bird lover.

5 out of 5 stars Forget the Crackers! Polly Want This Book!.......1997-01-14

Anyone with any interest in birds will be enchanted by this beautifully-produced work. Rosemary Low is one of the world's leading authorities on parrots and her concise text, coupled with the clear photographs by Ron and Val Moat, make this book a must-have. If you have ever wandered into a pet store and wondered about the parrots for sale, you will find them here--all of them! If you are interested in keeping birds, you will discover what each species eats and a brief description of its idiosyncracies. This book is a milestone in that it is the first pocket encyclopedia showing a colour photo of each parrot species bred in captivity.

I thought this book would give me some inspiration on how to paint my bedroom with the appeal of a five-star hotel room. It did not. It's just a book with a bunch of pictures of rooms that don't have much appeal at all. The price of the book, $29.99 should have given me a little something. I was not impressed.

2 out of 5 stars How not to write a bathroom book.......2007-09-17

This book is worth reviewing only because it's so sadly typical of many bathroom remodeling books currently on the market. Written in a breathy, ecstatic, inspirational style more appropriate to the spiritual uplift than the home remodeling literature, it's short on information, sources and resources and materials or manufacturing credits. The taste level of the lavish photo spreads varies from the sublime to the ridiculous; but in either case, even if you saw something you thought you might want to use in these pages and wanted to put a name to it, track down sources and prices ranges and assess its pluses or minuses for the particular installation you had in mind, you'd be totally out of luck. For example, if the picture you're interested in appears in the countertops chapter, don't expect Ms. Kohn to make life easy for you and identify the wall or floor materials in the same picture, including the elements that might originally have caught your eye.
This book reiterates the usual design and materials platitudes ("Balance is the key to beauty as well as budget!"; and: "A discarded Warning sign can take on new meaning and become a work of art..") providing unnecessary and maddeningly useless filler for both the pretty and the not so pretty photographs.
I've read a lot of bathroom design books in the course of planning my next bathroom makeover. They run the gamut from bad to outstanding, and Ms. Kohn's is certainly not the worst; but it's so highly typical of the genre that I think it's worth both the time and trouble it's taken to write this, admittedly, jaundiced review, in hopes that future publishers might take note and current consumers proceed with caution.

                                3 out of 5 stars Not bad...But not inspiring.......2005-01-05

Well, this would be a great book for my mom or grandmother, but as a young homeowner I am a bit dissapointed in the dated styles. Generally good advice and lay-out, but not inspiring. In fact there is on bathroom in there that I seriously have nightmares about!!!! I havent finished reading through yet, but so far it hasnt gotten any better.

5 out of 5 stars Great design resource.......2004-10-21

This book gave me plenty of great ideas for remodelling one of our bathrooms. I liked the up-to-date, grown-up and upscale designs that cover a range of different styles from modern to classic and from country to metropolitan. The design advice was very logically laid out and made a lot of sense. There wasn't just superficial blabber regarding "beauty" etc. but a lot of good, practical, in-depth pointers as to how to get a project started and completed. I haven't come across a better book than this for this subject!

This is a very beautiful book. I've never seen one like it. I read it from cover to cover the first night. Rosemary Warren and Marcia Ceppos have made a new fan. The photographs themselves make it worthwhile. Every designer should pick it up.

5 out of 5 stars Very Inspirational !.......2006-06-23

I found this Tinsel Trading book to be beautiful, creative and easy to learn from. The pictures, the styling, the trims, all amazing. I need to visit the store.
The ideas were inspirational. I have already begun two of the projects. (I got excited and couldn't decide on which one I liked more!)
I am going to try to complete four projects over the summer.

Great Book, I recommend it to everyone.

                                2 out of 5 stars Sadly Disappointing.......2006-06-08

As a former resident of New York City who "haunted" the numerous trimmings, flower and ribbon shops adjacent to New York's garment center, this was one shop that I would particulary enjoy getting lost in. It was a fabulous melange of "stuff" for trimming everything, much of it found by happenstance in the original cramped, dimly lit shop.

I never knew what I would find there and I especially drooled over the sad and neglected-looking antique metallic trims, tassels, fabrics, et al., buying a trim here, a tassel there, adding it to my stash for one day's sumptuous project.

One never really saw a proprietor about and would wonder who would pop out of the dark caverns of shelves and cabinets unexpectedly. This made the place a bit mysterious and fun all at once.

I have not been down to Tinsel Trading in many years, although judging from the photos in the book, it appears to have a new feel about it with order, spaciousness and brightness replacing the dim and cramped aisles of shelves and boxes. The shops look very inviting......although I must admit to a bit of nostalgia for the mystery of the former!

I was truly looking forward to seeing this book and the accompanying utilization of some of the many old-style trimmings that the shop specialized in, but there was hardly a hint of what was it's mainstay that could have been showcased in some really sophisticated or antique-inspired projects. I especially enjoyed reading the history of the shop and took particular note of the photo of the current basement "filled with years of treasures"!

With very few exceptions there was, sorry to say, nothing really inspiring at all about the featured decor and projects.
A white wicker hamper having a few silk flowers glued to the corners, a lampshade with too-heavy looking feather trim at the bottom edge were amateurish at best along with a couple of covered boxes also shown. Things of this caliber, we see all day long in the endless parade of cutesy, tacky, tasteless, childish, American "craft" magazines that appeal mainly to "terminal beginners" and not to those who are starving for and who appreciate more sophisticated, inspiring, ideas.

There also seems to be a bit too much repetition of photos showing the same objects over and over again....this takes up a few too many pages.

Sorry to say, I have returned this book...I expected a better representation and taste level coming from this venerable shop.

                                  Book Description

It is the most intimate room in the house and the most private, a place for rest and relaxation, reflection and romance. How we choose to decorate our bedroom says much about our dreams and ourselves. It is with this in mind that the editors of House Beautiful present this addition to the Great Style series, a volume filled with design and decorating ideas for every taste and mood: bucolic or urbane, restrained or exuberant, utterly feminine or solidly masculine. In these pages, a country home bedroom is treated to gilded elegance; a Manhattan apartment takes on the sunniness of a summer beach house; a Connecticut colonial becomes a snug, private getaway.Achieving all these looks starts with careful attention to the basics of wall, floor, and window treatments.

House Beautiful Bedrooms examines the various choices and offers advice, in text and photography, on how to make the most of the resources available. Suggestions for furniture come next, from bed styles to mixing looks and adding pieces originally intended for other rooms. And because the bedroom should be the best-dressed one in the house, a chapter is devoted to bed linens and fabrics. Ideas for using finishing touches to create unique and highly personal spaces round out this design portfolio. With more than one hundred beautiful photographs and advice from professional designers throughout the country, House Beautiful Bedrooms puts the room of one's dreams within everyone's reach.

I love this book, it is sitting on my coffee table right now. I've read this book atleast 5 times in the past couple months, most photography books I read once then never touch them again for quite a long time.. This book is amazing though.

I highly suggest purchasing it if you enjoy wildlife photography and reading about the photos. All the storys are short but very entertaining and the photos are of top notch quality.

5 out of 5 stars Highly recommended for nature and photography collections.......2004-11-12

Wildlife is a truly gorgeous showcase of wildlife photography from expert professionals. Still images are presented in full-color, along with a brief sidebar written by the photographer detailing the story behind the photograph in question. A wide variety of species are presented in all their glory, from a magnificent tiger in mid-leap to a penguin chick huddled for protection underneath its dutiful parent. Highly recommended for nature and photography collections alike, and simply beautiful to page through.

                                    4 out of 5 stars Not a Complete Meal.......2003-08-18

This is a collection of the work of 40 of the world's most famous wildlife photographers. Names like Iwago, Lanting, Mangelsen, Morris and Wolfe will be quite familiar to people interested in this genre.

Each artist gets four pages for some biographical data and several pictures. Every one of the photos is world class.

While the biographies are generally too short to provide much insight into the individual artists, one can discern a couple of trends in their lives. A good many started life in some other career and after a while decided to make the risky jump to professional wildlife photography. Others were interested in nature all of their life and the photography grew out of this love. No one started life as a commercial or fashion photographer and then made the switch to wildlife. Occasionally a photographer will offer a surprising statement about the commercial nature of wildlife photography, like the photographer who notes that the books he has published don't make financial sense, but do help to drum up other business.

As I've perused a number of wildlife photography books over the years, I've noticed that a good book is like a good piece of music. As you proceed through it, you notice both the repetition and the variation of elements so that by the end of the book you have not just looked at pictures, but also come to understand something about the photographer and the way he relates to the animals he photographs. This book is more like a CD my son owns, called "50 Great Classical Hits" (or something like that). The CD plays just the most dramatic points from a number of symphonies. While that can be interesting, it certainly doesn't provide the same experience as listening to a single full symphony.

This book has the same effect. Many of the pictures are obviously well composed and striking but when one turns the page the picture one just looked at disappears from the mind as the reader tries to come to grips with a completely different subject and style. Ultimately I found this beautiful book unsatisfying.

But, it does serve the very useful purpose of introducing you to wildlife photographers you may not have yet encountered. I, for one, will be keeping my eyes open for the work of Chris Packham and Konrad Wothe. Reading it may also lead you to look for the work of unfamiliar artists.

The images are brilliantly printed with stunning details. I even liked the format whereby the equipment used were listed together with the image.

                                    Excellent book for inspiration.

This is my favorite book of the year. The photos are really beautiful! I gave this as a Christmas gift to several of my friends who are into photography. In addition to the fabulous photos there is useful practical information for up and coming photographers.
