Book Description
One of the United States' most prominent botanists, James L. Reveal has joined forces with A. Scott Earle (a retired surgeon and professor) to follow the Corps of Discovery's trail, focusing on the plant specimens that Capt. Meriwether Lewis "collected for Mr. [Frederick] Pursh," President Jefferson, and other scientists of the early 19th century.
Earle's and Reveal's seasonal color photographs illustrate complete botanical descriptions of each plant, which are accompanied by quotes from Lewis's journal about it, along with comments from scientists of his day and since.

Customer Reviews:
An adequate, but not inspiring, guide book .......2006-11-13
If you have access to no other guidebook on the Hudson River Valley, the Moon Handbook provides an adequate roadmap. The descriptions of attractions are fairly detailed, the maps are easy to follow and the layout of the book is clear. It is dry and descriptive, however, and lacks the kind of personal evaluations that make other guidebooks so inspiring. It reads more like a government pamphlet than a travel book.
The ideal tool to plan a weekend excursion!.......2005-08-11
The guide not only offers wonderful suggestions for dining and lodging, but insight into activities and off the beaten path exploration. Clearly, the author's love and knowledge of the region resonates through the book. A very helpful tool for planning a weekend getaway, or a longer stay in this beautiful region of New York state.
This is the best HRV guide out there!.......2005-06-26
This book is the best guide to the Hudson River Valley that I've seen. It was a big help for planning weekend road trips and it also let us find cool new things to do. I think it'd be a great guide for anyone who visits the area often and is looking for something different than the same old thing. The writer really knows her stuff. Great book!

Disappointing.......2007-06-04
This is the first Moon book I bought - I'm an ardent Lonely Planet fan and I regret this purchase. It seems moon books are written with oldies in mind. There is little - if any - information about activities to do which Lonely Planet takes care of. Some of the sections like the finger lakes are so badly written that I can't imagine anyone going there after reading them.
This book feels more like a laundry list of places to go. If that is all that you are looking for, then it might work for you, otherwise, best stay away.

HANDY.......2005-09-30
Nice size to carry. Good information, however, difficult to find info without going to index. And one has to flip from one map to another. It almost assumes one knows where there are to begin with. But well organized if you already know a lot about NYC.
Not good for reading on a street corner.
Moon Metro New York -- What a star!.......2002-07-02
I decided to bring Moon Metro New York City with me on my first trip to the Big Apple. I couldn't have made a better decision! This guidebook never failed me once in my travels through the city. I loved how easy it was to read, the colorful pages, the insightful descriptions, and the pocketbook size. I'm going to make sure my next vacation will be a destination that Moon Metro covers! Avalon Travel Publishing and Moon Metro New York City deserve five stars.
Best guidebook I've ever used, period........2002-05-22
I've used lots of different travel guides in the past but have always been disappointed with something about them, so I usually end up bringing two or three books with me, which [stinks] big time. That's why I really like these Metro books. Small, chock full of info the I need, and easy to use. Besides the cool blue covers, what really makes them stand out is the foldout maps. I've used the SF and NYC Metros and regretted buying the Fodors and Let's Gos. Save yourself some luggage space, time, and money and pick up one of these books instead of a pile of the others.
Great guide!.......2002-05-22
I've never written one of these reviews before, but after using Moon Metro: New York City on my last trip, I simply had to say how helpful it was. The maps were fantastic and made a city that was new to me incredibly accessible. My friends and I picked several restaurants and shops at random from the book and were never disappointed. The reviews were right on. I fell in love with New York and I can honestly say my experience would not have been the same without this guide.

The very best tavel guide for all interests.......2003-08-21
Since 2000 I have used the second edition of this guide as my bible to the history, sights, and most fascinating dining and lodging spots of the central New York area where our children have gone to college. This Guide has made our trips to central New York among the most enjoyable of any I have taken anywhere in the world. The Moon Guide imparts an appreciation of its subject that is unmatched by any travel book I have ever owned. I can't wait to receive the new Third edition -- kudos to the authors!

Book Description
As quirky and full of life as the city itself, this expansive guide covers the Big Apple the way New Yorkers know it: neighborhood by neighborhood. Organizing the city's sights, practicalities, and offbeat pleasures geographically, Christiane Bird puts insider attractions at readers' fingertips: Whether they're looking for ginger ice cream in Chinatown, a wax museum in Harlem, or a posh supper and dance club in the Upper East Side, New York City Handbook will lead them to it.
Customer Reviews:
THE BEST GUIDE ..........2001-01-10
This excellent handbook is arranged by neighborhoods, allowing you to find all the places of interest in your immediate area without flipping back and forth. In addition, for the person that was looking for a particular type of food/etc. (that could be anywhere in the city), the author includes an appendix which has restaurants (listed according to cuisine), accommodations (listed by price), museums (by type), shopping (by type of item). The restaurant descriptions were concise and extremely accurate and included the average entree price (as a dollar amount rather than a range). The author also tells what the establishment is famous for (if anything) and the type of crowd it draws.
In addition to clever organization and attention to detail, this guide is filled with many humorous and intriguing histories of numerous places that I've actually been but until now didn't have any idea about. For example, in a sidebar entitled "Only in New York" the author refers to the gorgeous 23-acre Riverbank State Park built on top of a sewage treatment plant.
After looking at every guide in a large bookstore (for over an hour), I decided to purchase 3 guides each with a different strength. After 'reading' them more carefully it became clear that The New York City Handbook is without a doubt the most useful and most interesting. One guide had a stronger coverage in specialist shops the other guide had more information, but it was much less readable and not totally necessary. My suggestion is if you must buy only one guide, buy this one.
A bargain.......2000-12-16
It was my bad luck to discover this book only after visiting Manhattan, but the fact that it was still an interesting read says a lot. Organized by neighborhoods, the flavor of each one is vividly and fairly described. Many interesting historical facts are thrown in, yet none intrude on the presentation of New York City as it is today. A nice surprise was a subtle sense of the author's kindness (yes, in New York!)throughout. While no guidebook can cover everything, this one will surely help anyone get the most out of their visit in a city that's too big and too interesting to waste any time in.
New York City Handbook.......2000-03-28
From Times Square to Central Park, this fun to read guide to the Big Apple is full of indepth information to guide readers through its wonderland. It puts the "new" back in "New York."

Customer Reviews:
Just when we thought we'd seen most sea creatures.......2007-05-27
My kids and I loved this book. Tons of pictures of sea creatures we'd never heard of before i.e. Football fish (appropriately named), Gulper Eel,, Glass sponge, Brittle Star. This interesting book covers everything related to the sea including sea birds.
Wonderful pictures & photos
sort of like a sea dictionary.......2006-07-13
This was the best book I found in looking for something to do a unit on sea animals with my daughter (we homeschool). We are doing simple file folders of basic facts and picture of each animal and this was the ticket. Instead of having to look through lots of books and piece it together, this book is almost like a little dictionary of sea creatures. Probably about 3 animals to a page with an illustration and just the basic facts in about 3 sentences on each animal. Since that was all we wanted, it fit the bill. It's not in debth on the animals, just a short overview.
Our preschooler loves this.......2000-03-31
Our preschooler loves this book and has pretty much memorized every "creature" in it. The drawings are exciting without being frightening and the text is short. The authors have selected creatures with great appeal for children and she loves to say their names: Black-eyed goby! Moorish Idol! Sockeye salmon!
Book Description
As mammals ourselves, we have always been fascinated with this most advanced class of animals, and Simon & Schuster's Guide to Mammals describes 426 species worldwide. A long and thoughtful introduction to the evolution, characteristics, and orders of mammals is followed by the entries -- all illustrated in full color -- each containing the mammal's classification, description, and habitat as well as details on behavior, feeding habits, and reproduction. The entries also feature colorful symbols to illustrate habitat, color maps to show the distribution and rarity of each species, and line drawings to indicate unusual or notable physical features.
With more than 500 color photographs, Simon & Schuster's Guide to Mammals is a superb and valuable reference.
Customer Reviews:
Prepare for frustration.......2006-09-08
As part of my job, I am often trying to quickly look up mammalian taxonomy. Once I find the mammal, the information is good - however, getting there can be a battle. The index drives me CRAZY. For example, take peek at the sample pages. Look up 'bat' in the index. Note that it's not there. You have to know the EXACT common or scientific name to find an animal. Or else just browse through the appropriate chapter. The time I've spent just trying to find a particular species knocks this down to three stars, and that's being generous
Great photographic guide!.......2006-04-05
This book is great on its own or as a companion to the [...]Smithsonian Handbooks: Mammals guide. It's not as slick or aesthetic in its layout as the Smithsonian guide, but it features about the same number of species, including some that the Smithsonian one leaves out! It is not comprehensive, but still a good representation of the important families and species.
Some of the photos are of less than stellar quality, but they ALL show a very good representation of the animals in their natural habitats. None of the animals have been cropped around the edges (As in the Smithsonian book), and the species descriptions are more in-depth.
I reccommend this book to anyone who loves photographic guides or learning about animals!
This book is a fun way to educate people of the mamal world........1998-09-11
As an animal lover I found that this book was the best for the price. I found it to be excellent for those that are looking for just common knowledge of the mamal world.

Book Description
The decade between the world wars witnessed an astonishing flowering of photography in Europe-- marked particularly by the unprecedented work of such figures as Man Ray, László Moholy-Nagy, and Alexander Rodchenko. Alongside the visual experiments ran a fascinating public discussion in which critics, artists, and the photographers themselves struggled to define the nature and possibilities of photography in the modern era. The seventy-one essays and documents collected in this book provide a concise, provocative introduction to the ideas and personalities that animated avant-garde photography during these years of artistic ferment and that continue to influence the medium today.
By turns poetic, analytical, and fiercely ideological, these diverse writings give expression to a very wide range of original ideas. Moholy-Nagy calls on photographers to create a powerful abstract vision that will transform our ability to see. Albert Renger-Patzsch argues for a quite different goal, a photography of revelatory realism that lays bare the essence of the subject before the lens. The French writer Pierre Mac Orlan explores psychologically compelling notions: that photography realizes "all that is curiously inhuman" and "creates death for a second." Photography is widely characterized as a modern machine-age art that supersedes the traditional fine arts. In the Soviet Union an extraordinary interchange pits the avant-gardist Rodchenko against opponents who insist that social usefulness is photography's primary responsibility.
While shedding important new light on the directions taken by photography during the twentieth century, these essays also illuminate such major movements as Futurism, Constructivism, Surrealism, and the New Objectivity. Most of the selections were not previously available in English and have been translated especially for this volume. Each appears with an informative headnote by Christopher Phillips, who in an introductory essay provides a lucid overview of the period and the context in which the writings first appeared.
With its wealth of new material, this collection is an essential resource for all those studying photography or seeking to understand the visual culture of this century.
This book is published on the occasion of the exhibition The New Vision: Photography Between the World Wars, Ford Motor Company Collection at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, held at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, September 23-December 31, 1989.
