Book Description
Like other guidebooks in the Hidden series, Hidden Wyoming reviews the popular attractions -- such as Jackson Hole, the quiet ranching community transformed into a collection of million-dollar alpine resorts -- then invites readers to go further by exploring "hidden" spots other guides overlook such as Gros Ventre River Ranch with its inexpensive log cabins, nearby summer fly-fishing streams, and winter snowshoeing trails. Travel writer John Gottberg is equally comfortable describing a ride down a stretch of white water, the atmosphere at an exclusive resort, or the history of an Old West mining town, making him uniquely qualified to lead visitors through the state's amazing landscape of high mountain peaks, alpine lakes, hot springs, ghost towns, and lost bits of wilderness. This guide covers Wyoming's Wild West heritage, listing 18 Indian museums, ten trading post craft shops, and four cowboy museums. Over four dozen parks and wilderness areas are described including information on camping, hiking, boating, and horseback riding.
Book Description
Combining unique travel choices, outdoor adventures, and little-known locales into guides where vacations meet adventures, each title in the Hidden series also offers readers the comfort of detailed maps, Internet information for each listing, author picks, suggested itineraries, and walking and driving tours. Hidden Wyoming reviews everything from Jackson Hole's million-dollar resorts to Gros Ventre River Ranch and its inexpensive log cabins, nearby fly-fishing streams, and winter snowshoeing trails. The author guides readers to the state's amazing landscape of high mountain peaks, alpine lakes, hot springs, ghost towns, and lost bits of wilderness. Author John Gottberg lives in Seattle, WA. Include 14 maps.

Lodgings, sightseeing, and special dining experiences.......2001-09-12
Hidden Wyoming appears in its third edition to provide selective recommendations and reviews of lodgings, sightseeing, and special dining experiences throughout the state. A "user friendly" and recommended pick for destination-bound travelers.

Spirit of the Plains People.......2007-01-03
This book has his earlier work as well as some newer paintings. I was hopping to get a book with only work that was not published before. Bummer. Reproduction of the paintings are not the best."The art of Howard Terpning" has much better reproductions of his work. This book repeats a lot of work from the other book.

Customer Reviews:
Review of Cherokee Dance book.......2007-01-08
I thought some of the illustrations were less than professional looking. I have not read all of it yet, but the information is pretty good so far.
A KEEPER.......2006-01-11
Some would say that this book is where the author left off in his prior book on How To Make Cherokee Clothing. However, the book is much more.
In the book, the author goes farther than he has in the past. He gives better illustrations and goes more into detail about Cherokee culture.
I still say that the author fails in delineating what time period of Cherokee Culture that he is talking about when he is showing an item for example. I also still say that his patterns are lacking.
With that said, his models have improved considerably. The illustrations are more professional than in his prior book. Indeed, this is just an all around better book.
There are a few things that do not jive with the prior book that he has written. For instance, in the prior book he talked about how the chief used deer toes around his ankles. In this book, there are no deer toe anklets and the moccassins of the chief now have turkey spurs. Another oddity is that in his prior book he talked about how the bear dance was lost forever from the Cherokee people...yet in this book he talks about what to wear and how to do the bear dance.
Any reader of this evaluation should note that this book WILL NOT teach you how to do Cherokee dances. There are no foot steps, no musical notations, etc. In fact, some pictures show people in a dazed and confused pose with captions noting that the models are "trying" to recreate the dances. Truly, the most that you can hope for is learning a chant or two. And, in some regards, you have to be skilled in crafting without a pattern (often relying on your own knowledge of Cherokee crafts) if you can even begin to hope for a specific project to turn out like something from the book.
Indeed, the author's skills are evolving. But, there is still much room for improvement. Yet, I am confident that the author has what it takes to be the first in American history to to a comprehensive anthology of Cherokee culture with the history, delineated period dress, stories, healing methods, dance steps, written music, chants, writings, culture, etc.
At present, the author is a blib on the radar of Cherokee culture. I feel that he can be so much more.
This is not to say that I give 5 stars to this book because it is a great book or that the author is a great writer. In reality, the book is poorly written, poorly organized, and seriously lacking in many respects. However, what it excels in is that it is an excellent piece in preserving certain aspects of a rapidly dying Cherokee culture. Often, what you find in this book you will not find elsewhere. Too many authors are trying to lump us together with other tribes and even the Mayans and Aztecs. This author stays CHEROKEE and does all things Cherokee. For that, this book is deserving of 5 stars and a sincere "THANK YOU" for its contribution to Cherokee history and cultural preservation.
Very Good Book.......2000-04-24
This book is great! It has descriptions of costumes of dances which will help me with my dance ceremonies. THIS BOOK IS GREAT!
Book Description
For the true connoisseur or the amateur collector of Native American crafts, this book offers excellent coverage of Plains Indian knife sheaths, worn by men and women for both ceremonial and everyday use. The book is filled with full color photographs of knife sheaths, as well as historic photos of Native peoples. The detailed instructions are fully illustrated and easy to follow. Many of the sheaths featured in the pictures were made by the author, who was born in Russia and became a leader in the Indian hobbyist movement in the Soviet Union. Now living in the US, he continues to create museum-quality reporductions of Native American craftwork.
Customer Reviews:
Indian Hobbyist Literature.......2007-01-04
The a.m. book's contents are harmless, the author's works shown in this book are hobbyists standards, they definitely lack the authochtoneous touch. Nice guide for beginning and advanced American Indian Hobbyists. For the more serious reader it lacks basic informations needed when describing and picturing objects as knife cases.
The quality of the book itself is poor, pages come loose easily.

Customer Reviews:
A Superb Reference Work.......2000-11-02
This really is a "must-have" book for anyone interested in the details of what Plains Indians wore. It contains hundreds of wonderful full colour plates of Ledger Drawings by Plains Indians of Plains Indians. The production values of the book are also very high indeed, so that it is not only a marvellous reference work, it is also beautiful to look at and to hold. The standard of scholarship of the accompanying text is also excellent. As an author and artist, I found it truly inspirational. The only possible criticism is that more of the Ledger Drawings themselves were not reproduced, because the references to them are tantalising.

Book Description
The recent arrival of the two giant pandas Tian Tian and Mei Xiang at the Smithsonian's National Zoo has created an enormous outpouring of public support for the conservation of this endangered species. The first step in attempting to ensure a future for giant pandas is understanding both their history and their current relationship with people. Susan Lumpkin and John Seidensticker present a beautifully photographed, resonant natural history, sharing their personal experiences of working with giant pandas in the United States and China.
Customer Reviews:
awsome book.......2007-01-05
If you love Pandas , this is the book to get. It is very detailed and well worth you time. You won't regret it!
Excellent Panda Resource Book.......2005-10-22
What I really liked about this book is how it's completely accessible for all ages. It's not dumbed down for younger readers, yet it doesn't pander to more mature readers, either. It presents facts, figures and other related information in such a way that anybody could learn from this read.
This book is also one heck of a coffee table book, the perfect gift for anyone you might know who loves panda bears. The photographs are breath-taking, showcasing this beautiful creature in its natural habitat as well as in zoos. There are also some telling photos of pandas in their youngest form. All exquisite and mind-blowing in their individual beauty.
Status of Wildlife Conservation fieldwork in China.......2003-03-09
A beautiful cocktail table book full of beautiful photos of China and Pandas. The book's strengths lies in its accurate portrayal of giant panda conservation work in China, i.e. "muddy boots" conservationist work. The book surprisingly covers very little about the giant panda research at zoos and focuses mainly on conservation field work in China. The book also goes at length to describe the giant pandas genetic classification (genus) with respect to carnivora ( especially wrt raccoons and bears , see page 33-54 ). Most notable about the book is its assertion that there were originally two types of giant panda (a) tropical/warm climate giant panda ( Ailuropoda microta , extinct smaller version of the giant panda whose fossilized remains were found in caves at Lang Trang, Vietnam - see pages 51-54 ) and (b) a mountain/cold climate giant panda ( Ailuropoda melanoleuca, the modern giant panda ). The authors describes the giant panda as an ecological umbrella which is shared by people, other animals, and fauna. (p.93--153). While extensively referenced and researched, the book is not footnoted and lacks the rigorous presentation of data and analysis to be defined as a scientific work. Micheal Kiefer, Chris Catton and Schaller have provided better historical outline man's interaction with the giant pandas. The freshest part of this book is the coverage on the introduction of environmentally-sustainable/friendly human economies like the International Network for Bamboo and Rattan (INBAR, see p. 153) and the conservation effort in China to gain the local support in China to protect wildlife and the environment.
The Ideal Panda Book for Library or Coffee Table.......2002-09-04
Finally, an up-to-date, photo-studded book on giant pandas by experts who know the subject inside and out. There's plenty of media attention on this unique endangered species but this book gives background, context, and depth lacking in most magazine and newspaper articles. If you want to settle in and take an armchair trip into the world of the elusive giant panda, get this book.

Book Description
Garden Seed Inventory is an essential reference for all serious vegetable growers who care about seeds and preserving our common garden heritage. This comprehensive catalog of catalogs is now available in an updated sixth edition, and lists nearly 8,500 nonhybrid varieties of everything from amaranth to zucchini.
As traditional plant breeding gives way to bioengineering and patented varieties, it has become even more important to recognize and preserve our rich vegetable legacy: seeds brought to this country by immigrants from every corner of the world, or developed here by farmers and breeders for superior taste, regional adaptability, disease resistance, and other virtues. Far from being obsolete or inferior, these varieties represent the cream of our vegetable crops. Garden Seed Inventory opens the door and invites us all to discover them.
Customer Reviews:
Valuable for ordinary gardeners, also........2002-08-29
If you are looking for non-hybrid vegetable seed sources, this is the book for you. It lists vegetables, their characteristics and where their seed may be obtained. I own a copy and have spent hours enjoying it. I don't consider myself a zealot, just an avid gardener who is interested in preserving the vegetable gene pool, and trying some old varieties. I was interested in finding disease and insect resistant varieties. If your library has this book you can take a look at it before buying to be sure it is what you are looking for. I had to have my own copy.
The perfect book for the vegetable garden zealot........2001-04-17
Printed on the inside of the cover there are praises for "Garden Seed Inventory," and rightly so, for it is a valuable, "one of a kind" catalogue of all the vegetable seeds offered by garden seed companies in North America.
Dr. Harlan, retired professor of plant genetics (there's a clue for you) states that the book is for "enthusiastic gardeners, plant breeders and those interested in the preservation of seed stocks." Now I think of myself as an enthusiastic amateur gardener, but it will take a whole lot more than my enthusiasm to really make this tome useful. This is a book that a professor of plant genetics should have. This is the book that the owners of one of the 255 seed companies listed in the book should have, and this is the book that a seed zealot would have, but not your normal `enthusiastic gardener'.
Don't get me wrong, this book is extremely valuable to the right person. As Wendell Berry said, "The saving of seeds has become a matter of the greatest importance, for we are on the verge of losing the genetic diversity of our food crops.". Over the last 20 years, because of mega-transnational corporations buying out the small seed companies, there has been a significant loss of local or regional varieties. Here's why; when a large corporation gets into the seed business they have to cover a large market, so they breed for a variety of vegetables plants that can grow anywhere across North America (hybrid) and dump the regional plants. In 1981, the first edition of "Garden Seed Inventory" there were 493 tomatoes (red) varieties available; by 1998 there were 108 still available (78% drop). Then again, in the same period, there were 546 new varieties brought to market.
What this book is really about is saving our vegetable heritage and assuring genetic preservation. It is the seed squealer of horticulture books. It will tell you which varieties are about to be dropped and it also helps you find regional varieties that you can plant, thus preserve the lineage. It is a great tool for those that are ready to move from enthusiastic gardener to zealous, non-hybrid vegetable seed gardener. However, for the rest of us Americans, we will probably plant our gardens with the seeds that were on the rack at the local stores and when they come up, if they come up, enthusiastically smile. Highly Recommended for the zealot, conditionally recommended for the rest of us.

Book Description
The legendary Countess de Castiglione, embodiment of the Second Empire in France, dedicated her life to a cult of personal beauty. At her death she left more than 400 extraordinary photographs of herself, commemorating the significant moments of her life as she re-created them for the camera. This volume presents a selection of the portraits gathered from public and private collections and places them in the context of a dazzling epoch. This book is the catalogue for an exhibition at The Metropolitan Museum of Art from 18 September to 31 December 2000.
Customer Reviews:
A woman far ahead of her time.......2000-12-21
An amazing account of a time and woman like no other. The Countess di Castiglione can be looked upon as a precursor to many artists that have explored self-portraiture, though her "art" captured her narcissism more than any underlying concept or expression. In beautiful costumes from her personal collection, the Countess was photographed and then had artists paint over the portrait to create scenes from history, current operas, or novels of the time. This book compliments the wonderful exhibit recently displayed by the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. I had the pleasure of seeing the exhibit and I was floored by the effortless artistry by which the Countess expressed her deep-seated self love (and loathing). I highly recommend finding out more about this beautiful woman, so scandalous in her time, so historically important in ours.
