RI Master Gardener Advanced Education.......2007-10-17
As the RI Master Gardener Advanced Education Coordinator, I have used this book for two years in workshops delivered to our membership. The "Locator Key" and identification system is easy to use (easier than using the weed identification systems) and the drawings and descriptions are clear. Would recommend to anyone interested in identifying wildflowers or "weeds."
Best Wildflower Guide I Know.......2007-08-14
Because the keys are based on number of petals, this is the easiest identification guide I have. I take it into the field along with the Peterson's guide, which has better illustrations, and cross-check my flowers.
Very Useful.......2007-06-11
In the past, I found field guides to wildflowers very frustrating. I have both A Field Guide to Wildflowers : Northeastern and North-Central North America (Peterson Field Guides)and a Golden Wildflower guide. Because the aforementioned are organized by color first, one has to painstakingly search though all of the illustrations until a probable match is found. This is time consuming, and for me, very difficult, leading to many misidentifications.
Newcomb's Wildflower guide takes a different approach. Created for the non botanist, it begins with flower shape, then leaf location, then leaf shape, until you have a 3 digit numeric key. Next by looking under this key for more detail, you are directed to the right page(s). For me this is wonderful, it takes a little practice, but once you get the hang of it, you find the correct illustration and description quickly without having to page though a multitude of pink or blue or white, etc. flowers.
Admittedly, this system is not for everyone. Many people may like starting with color, but for me this guide is truly useful in the field.
Great guide for beginners and advanced.......2007-05-23
Overall a great book if you are interested in wildflower identification. I wish there were more pictures. Once you learn the coding, it is easy to narrow what you are looking for. I tried identifying a a flower that I already new by using the coding and was able to go directly to it. Using it to identify others you don't know takes a little practice, but it cuts your search time way down.
A Staple for Every Fan of Plants.......2007-03-08
This book is the first to go into a field bag when headed outside. It is an invaluable resource. A great deal of drawings (mostly B/W) that aid in the identification of Northeastern wildflowers. Note: requires a moderate amount of practice and/or knowledge of plants and flowers to be truly effective.

Poor Guidance and Outdated.......2005-11-24
I used the Fodors for out trip to Italy in November 2005 and was very dissappointed with it. Since there are no pictures, it was very difficult to identify monuments. The descriptions of the various historical places were vague and unsatisfactory. We had to purchase additional guides while in Italy to help us better understand the sites/monuments. The prices are also outdated: almost all of the admission or ticket prices it quoted were wrong and less than the actual price. As well, the restaurants it recommended were dissatisfactory. Next time I will pick up a different book (not Fodors), one with pictures and more details.
You're Going To Love Italy!.......2005-07-07
I've been to Italy several times.....Rome, Venice, Florence, Bologna, Milan, some of the hill towns, etc (most recently last April). Here are my reviews of the best guides to meet your exact needs.....I hope these are helpful and that you have a great visit! I always gauge the quality of my visit by how much I remember a year later......this review is designed to help you get the guide that will be sure YOU remember your trip many years into the future. Travel Safe and enjoy yourself to the max!
Rick Steves' books are not recommended. They may be an interesting read but their helpfulness is very poor. They don't do well on updates, transportation details, or anything but the first-time-tourist routine and even that is somewhat superficial on anything but the mega-major sites.
Frommer's
These are time tested guides that pride themselves on being updated annually. Although I think the guides below provide information that is in more depth or more concise (depending on what the guide is known for), if your main concern is that the guide has very little old or outdated information, then this would be a good guide for you.
Lonely Planet
Lonely Planet has City and Out To Eat Guides. They are all about the experience so they focus on doing, being, getting there, and this means they have the best detailed information, including both inexpensive and really spectacular restaurants and hotels, out-of-the-way places, weird things to see and do, the list is endless.
Blue Guides
Without doubt, the best of the walks guides.... the Blue Guide has been around since 1918 and has extremely well designed walks with lots of unique little side stops to hit on just about any interest you have. If you want to pick up the feel of the city, this is the best book to do that for you. This is one that you end up packing on your 10th trip, by which time it is well worn.
MapGuide
MapGuide is very easy to use and has the best location information for hotels, tourist attractions, museums, churches etc. that they manage to keep fairly up to date. It's great for teaching you how to use the public transportation system. The text sections are quick overviews, not reviews, but the strong suite here is brevity, not depth. I strongly recommend this for your first few times learning your way around the classic tourist sites and experiences. MapGuide is excellent as long as you are staying pretty much in the center of the city.
Time Out
The Time Out guides are very good. Easy reading, short reviews of restaurants, hotels, and other sites, with good public transport maps that go beyond the city centre. Many people who buy more than one guidebook end up liking this one best!
Let's Go
Let's Go is a great guide series that specializes in the niche interest details that turn a trip into a great and memorable experience. Started by and for college students, these guides are famous for the details provided by people who used the book the previous year. They continue to focus on providing a great experience inexpensively. If you want to know about the top restaurants, this is not for you (use Fodor's or Michelin). Let's Go does have a bewildering array of different guides though. Here's which is what:
Budget Guide is the main guide with incredibly detailed information and reviews on everything you can think of.
City Guide is just as intense but restricted to the single city.
PocketGuide is even smaller and features condensed information
MapGuide's are very good maps with public transportation and some other information (like museum hours, etc.)
Michelin
Famous for their quality reviews, the Red Michelin Guides are for hotels & Restaurants, the Green Michelin Guides are for main tourist destinations. However, the English language Green guide is the one most people use and it has now been supplemented with hotel and restaurant information. These are the serious review guides as the famous Michelin ratings are issued via these books.
Fodor's
Fodor's is the best selling guide among Americans. They have a bewildering array of different guides. Here's which is what:
The Gold Guide is the main book with good reviews of everything and lots of tours, walks, and just about everything else you could think of. It's not called the Gold guide for nothing though....it assumes you have money and are willing to spend it.
SeeIt! is a concise guide that extracts the most popular items from the Gold Guide
PocketGuide is designed for a quick first visit
UpCLOSE for independent travel that is cheap and well thought out
CityPack is a plastic pocket map with some guide information
Exploring is for cultural interests, lots of photos and designed to supplement the Gold guide

From fragrant pharaohs to the revolting Richards and smelly Stuarts, kings and queens around the world and down the ages have never been so exposed.

Smelly Old History.......2002-04-21
All of Mary Dobson's "Smelly Old History" books are an excellent way for elementary students to learn history and take whiffs of the many foul smells along history's timeline. The kids get so excited to smell the next foul smell they forget they are learning historical facts as they go. My first grade boy loves the books, but loves scratching the smells best. Some of the facts are a bit beyond 1st grade and younger, but they will still love the books. Ideal for 3rd-5th graders, who have some knowledge of ancient history and can remember names of people and important events in history. Excellent and fun choice for any elementary age student as a gift or for school.

ASIN: 0721601057 |
Book Description
This practical guide facilitates a thorough dissection of the dog to learn basic mammalian structure and specific canine features. Emphasizing anatomical knowledge, each chapter presents self-contained guidance on the dissection of a specific body part, allowing the reader to perform these dissections in any sequence preferred. Descriptions are based on the dissection of embalmed, arterially injected adult dogs of mixed breeds, and the anatomical terms used in the book come from the Nomina Anatmica Veterinaria.
Customer Reviews:
Helpful for a starting guide.......2007-09-15
Really great start to dog dissection but if you want a more in-depth analysis that is also less travel friendly, go for the larger version of this book.
I live with this book...........2007-09-10
As a first year veterinary student, this book has become a lifeline at school. Whether it's looking up some unknown body part in Radiology lab, or needing a drawing to further comprehend the lecture, this book delivers. A great feature is it's small size - you can carry it in your bag. I keep a few larger anatomy books at home, but this is such a help. It doesn't have the depth and detail you'll need for everything, but gives a nice, quick summary.
Excellent for veterinary students........2006-01-27
I am a current veterinary student and this book is a necessary reference for small animal anatomy courses. It is very informative and covers all of the anatomy of the dog. Most diagrams are from the more expensive Millers Anatomy of the Dog.
From a vet student.......2005-07-20
Pros: It is easy to read, not incredibly boring, when it provides good information, it does so in an easy to understand way.
Cons: Contradictory information, the steps are not well organized, sometimes you cut through muscle you later find out you should have saved.
Nice companion for Miller's Anatomy of the Dog.......2004-03-04
Overall, I found this to be an excellent book for small animal (technically dog only) gross anatomy. I say small animal, but I find myself referring to this text even when studying large animal anatomy. Reason--I like how the text very clearly indicates proximal and distal muscle attachments for all major muscles and specific nervous and arterial supply to all major muscles.
The pictures and diagrams are decent, but all in black and white. I found it helpful to color in structures in the book as I dissected that specific part of the animal.
I didn't find the text as boring as other reviewers have. True, the subject matter is tedious, but this book gets right to the point. Paradoxally, that is also while I gave this book 4 stars instead of 5. A lot of the detail is missing. I suggest having a copy of Miller's Anatomy of the Dog to go with this dissection guide.
Highly recommended!

Book Description
Why did Frankie say "Relax"? Did anyone really want to hurt Boy George? And why didn't anybody walk in L.A.? This Ain't No Disco can't answer all these head-scratchers, but it does bring the New Wave era back with page after totally awesome page of 300 of the best album covers. This rad collection includes covers from the late 1970s to the mid-'80s and will have true believers of a certain generation totally spazzing. New Wave was defined as much by style, fashion, and graphic design as the music itself witness the ruffled cuffs and heavy makeup of the New Romantics, the skinny ties and peg-pants of the neo-Mods, and the unsettling robotic personae of Devo and Gary Numan. Bursting with wild hairstyles, futuristic typography, pastel shapes, and outlandish clothing, these are the album covers that defined an era and continue to influence music and fashion styles today. A nostalgic trek with a mental soundtrack, This Ain't No Disco will inspire readers to don those rubber bracelets once again and proclaim, "Let's dance this mess around!"
Customer Reviews:
Bitter Suite .......2007-09-09
This is a great little time capsule of 80s album graphics from the sublime to the silly. I was happy to see my illustration for Yello's "Claro Que Si" included but dismayed that the book's credit line reads "artist unknown" when my signature is clearly visible.
Planless and partially off topic.......2006-11-08
Whoever threw this collection of albumcovers together, obviously wanted to make a book showing a few albumcovers, but had no clue what new wave was. Neither a classic like Roxy Music belongs in this book, nor all the unimportant american power pop bands a la photos, heaters etc, that nobody listened to and that didnt contribute anything new or of value to the music scene.
Even worse, adding idols for 12 year olds, such as Wham, Taco, Men without hats and similar crap to this collection, is an iinsult to the genre. Those we the ones we hated and never wanted t see again, if you had been born then already, you know?
Guiltless Nostalgia.......2006-02-25
Just in time for designers looking for research material on the 80's and a good coffeetable book for serious vinyl collectors. Comprehensive reproductions of album covers that were the vanguard of the new wave style. Also for those, like me, who think MTV misrepresents the 80's. This book is proof that our teenage past was full of innovation and shocking imagery. Proof that there was something before rave culture. Had a blast going over the book with others in their late 30's.
great book.......2005-08-13
Great format -good quality - rare covers in this book of new wave period - nice layout, rigorous curation , bravo , love it. Found myself trying to buy these records again but on cd!
I wish there was a 70's version too.

Book Description
With a Foreword by Prof. Louis B. Barnes of Harvard Business School, this book records the experience of a Chinese business woman who pioneered and succeeded in modernizing the aging Chinese retail business. Based on her years of business experience, the author recounts the turmoil, clashes of concepts and behind-the-scene decisions in the Chinese retail business, as well as psychological shocks, emotional perplexes, and intellectual apprehension she had gone through.
Breaking Grounds reveals how, in a series of groundbreaking moves, Bingxin Hu redefined Chinese retail, integrated Western management with the Chinese tradition and culture, and developed a unique and effective model that was copied by many other retailers.
The Chinese version of this book was an instant hit. Hu's first-hand description of her endeavor has benefited many Chinese retailers. A valuable case study on Chinese retail business and its management, Breaking Grounds also serves as a guide on Chinese market operation and investment strategies for Western business people who have invested or are thinking of investing in China.
