Handy guide to mosses, ferns, mushrooms and lichens.......2007-08-24

This pocket-sized guide proves useful when identifying mushrooms, lichens, mosses and ferns. The full color illustrations and a short written description aid in identification.
There are newer guides out there, but this gets you started. I wouldn't use this to select mushrooms for eating, but it helped me identify a lichen I found this week (Red Crest Lichen). Now I know the difference between lichens and mosses which I'd previously lumped together.
I've started a moss garden, so I found the diagram of a moss' life cycle interesting.

History becomes three-dimensional.......2005-08-18

I had the delightful privilege of hearing Mme. Haig read from her book at the French Institute in New York which in turn, plunged me into an exuberant frenzy to learn as much as I could about Napoleon and even more so - Josephine. Mme. Haig's writing comes from a genuine passion about her subjects and is wonderfully researched, with fascinating detail. Should you be travelling to Paris with a teenager, this book could ignite a passion in them as well about history before Britney Spears' first marriage.

A beautiful blend of words and art...........2004-03-17

Diana Reid Haig's beautiful, well researched book is invaluable on two levels; as a work of art and as a practical walking guide. Walks Through Napoleon and Josephine's Paris will interest Francophiles as well as those who love history and art. This extremely readable history of Napoleon and Josephine chronicles the rise and fall of the doomed couple--a history which is also inexorably linked with the history of France and the French Revolution.

A blend of words and art, Haig's book is wonderful to page through, but is also a great read. I recommend this work to both armchair travelers and frequent visitors to Paris. This book is a brilliant new way to see and enjoy Paris.

Fascinating and useful: a delightful book!.......2004-02-17

Diana Reid Haig has produced a delightful book that is at once fascinating and useful. She tells short anecdotal stories of Napoleon and Josephine and their times while showing us beautiful photographs of the places they would have known and then showing us how to find them. No one who is interested in Napoleon should ever visit Paris without consulting this book, and even those who will never set foot on the Champs-Élysées will enjoy thumbing through its pages and reading Haig's well-written little vignettes of one of history's most famous love stories.

The book is organized into four "walks," which generally correspond to Napoleon's early career and meeting of Josephine, life as First Consul, the coronation, and the return of Napoleon's body in 1840. To these she adds a tour of Fontainebleau and Malmaison, two places where Napoleon and Josephine lived. Each walk comes with a map that clearly shows the major places she discusses as well as shops and other areas of interest. The maps are easy to follow and a dotted line traces her suggested route. A map of Paris showing where in the greater scheme of things these maps fit would have been useful, but any visit to Paris will be enhanced by this book.

One of Haig's most endearing qualities as a writer is her ability to provide interesting and useful information in a way that both informs and entertains. Throughout her book we hear of some of the standard discussions of Napoleon and Josephine, such as her affair and their near breakup after his Egyptian campaign. But we also are given brief glimpses into their daily lives and their relationship with the buildings that we can see on her tours. Haig also includes interesting "side boxes" on topics the basics of which are common knowledge but the unknown details of which can be quite interesting. For example, we all know of Napoleon's famous hat, but from Haig we learn that he ordered four a year as First Consul and later had at least fifty ordered from his hatter, Poupard, who charged exorbitant rates. Indeed, Haig presents enough interesting history that a scholarly reader is left wishing she had provided references.

This wonderful little book is like none other that I have seen. It is beautifully produced and well written. I highly recommend it to anyone interested in seeing and understanding Napoleon and Josephine's Paris.

six who Dared.......2004-01-23

The book Six Who Dared was more like a childerns book because of the stories it told about seemed more like action hero. Six people who do stunts and live to tell about it but some of them were kinda interesting like George Willig who climbed the World Trade center. I found the book to be ok its just that all the stunts happen back in the 70's.

This pocket guide is full of great and concise info about the critters of Michigan, broken down into easy to find categories as well as beautiful photos to accompany the facts. A native Michigander, I found new facts that I didn't know about the creatures that surround me. A delightful book..and a must for every Michgan traveller's pocket.

On the cusp of significance........2000-08-28

Photographer, journalist, artist, and Portuguese expatriate Rita Barros, is one of those lucky people who arrives on the scene when a world is in transition and captures dynamic change for posterity. This book is really about each souls struggle for significance. Here we see a paradox: The Chelsea Hotel, when it was a rag tag hangout in a dusty backwater, at least had it's scruffy but brilliant artists. Now that the surrounding neighborhood has become a high rent,trendy district, the Hotel is mostly the home of brilliantly(i.e.expensivly) dressed, hangers on.

In this Book, you will witness worn but wistful folks such as composer Virgil Thompson(in his last years) and a few surviving beat writers waving ,(or is it wavering?) as new talent arrives followed by new money. Noble souls such as Helen Johnson (owner of one of the finest African American Theater collections) are finally given their overdue due, while truly lesser folks do overdo it, flailing to be noticed for talent that they probably don't really have.

The luckiest readers will be those who are drawn onto the creaking boards of the Old Chelsea lured by the likes of rock star Dee Dee Ramone, only to meet film genius, Shirley Clarke for the first time (or vice-versa.)This book is clearly a labor of love. With this un-selfconcious enterprise, Ms. Barros has ended up offering something truly of value. The reading public is the sore looser if they don't take notice!

Postcards from a cruise on the "Ship of Fools"........2000-08-09

The Chelsea Hotel remains a fixed point in the chaotic map of New York's creative overworld. It is a collection of brief moments which superimpose "has-been's" with "will-be's", names, facts and faces flashing in and out of notoriety. Somewhere in the building there are holes that lead not exactly into John Malkowitch head but surely into those of likes of Greg Corso, Arthur C. Clark, Sid Vicious, Leonard Cohen among many others. Some holes lead directly to some ugly swamp in New Jersey, so you need a tour guide. Rita Barros is the best you can get. She has wistfully cohabited with this unending cast of characters for those many years; she has become one of them; she has probed the holes in those walls for a decade and a half; inhabited the minds they lead to. She has captured them in the butterfly net which is her camera, she has pined them into postcards, complete with the rooms they refashioned in their own image. She now mails them from beyond the edge in this picture book of quirkiness which is bound to turn any coffee table upside down. To observe that her photos are vivid, vibrant, vicarious, or exuberant, eccentric, hilarious (which they all are) is to realize that, while browsing these pages, one trips on an unending treasure trove of adjectives which never cease to suggest themselves. More than anything these images show the affection and respect for its subjects which are the distinguishing marks of great photography. Having this book around is like joining a new group of old friends or waking with a sudden urge to paint your living room. Get it before its gone!
