        Book Description

The first comprehensive application of cladistics to the massive body of data on both living and fossil plants, this book clarifies phylogenetic patterns within and among basal groups of land plants. In its analysis of the patterns and processes underlying the origin of land plants, the book sheds light on central questions surrounding the initial assembly of terrestrial ecosystems.

2 out of 5 stars A good try, but not very satisfying.......1999-04-13

This is a comprehensive and well written book about the evolutionary relationships among early vascular land plants. The problem with this book is that it is incomplete as far as the actual biology of these plants. The authors seem to spend endless time going over all the various features of these ancient plants but never once tell us why these features might be biologically important. Also, they analyze their plants in cladistic piece meal, that is, they never provide a single global cladistic analysis, which as far as I am concerned is a major methodological problem. This book is for the expert, not for students. And it is certainly not for the average reader.

              Description:
The charophyte algae are six distinct groups of mostly freshwater green algae that are related to modern land plants. Charophyte algae exhibit diverse morphologies and reproductive strategies, from unicells to branching erect forms, and from swimming asexual spores to sex involving eggs and sperm, respectively. The green algae known as stoneworts (Charales) are suggested to be the extant sister group to all land plants, although the phylogeny is not conclusive. Here we review recent molecular phylogenetic work on the charophyte algae and its implications for our understanding of the origins of land plants and of characters in their aquatic ancestors that might have played a role in the explosive diversification of plants on land.

                    Book Description

Each edition of this unique series marries a collection of previously published essays with detailed practical information, creating a colorful and deeply absorbing pastiche of opinions and advice. Each book is a valuable resource -- a compass of sorts -- pointing vacationers, business travelers, and readers in many directions. Going abroad with a Collected Traveler edition is like being accompanied by a group of savvy and observant friends who are intimately familiar with your destination.

This edition on central Italy -- tuscany & umbria features:

Distinguished writers, such as Muriel Spark, Gerald Asher, Erica Jong, Jason Epstein, Pope Brock, Nancy Harmon Jenkins, and David Downie, who share seductive pieces about the side roads of Tuscany, wines of Montepulciano, renting houses in Tuscany and Umbria, cooking schools, outdoor markets, and the Festa dei Ceri in Gubbio.

Annotated bibliographies for each section with recommendations for related readings.

An A-Z "informazioni pratiche" (practical information) section covering everything from accommodations, hiking, and pazienza (patience) to the Italian yellow pages.

Whether it's your first trip or your tenth, the Collected Traveler books are indispensable, and meant to be the first volumes you turn to when planning your journeys.

                    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Good for browsing, bad for pinpointing.......2007-05-04

I have always enjoyed Barrie Kerper's Collected Traveler anthologies, and own three of them. They are the ultimate guidebooks for inveterate readers: rather than names and addresses and prices and museum hours, they contain a wide variety of essays and travel pieces on the place in question. While I certainly wouldn't travel without one of those more specific Fodor's or Eyewitness guidebook, these are priceless for giving the flavor and the feel of the place, as well as providing history and folklore that more practical hand books don't have space for. This particular volume on Central Italy contains, among many others, a really charming essay by William Zinsser on Siena; a wonderful and detailed account by Lis Harris on Siena's annual Palio; and a piece on market day in Cortona by Frances Mayes of Tuscan Sun fame. You don't even have to leave your chair to have a purely enjoyable experience.

My one complaint is that there's no index, and only a ve-e-ery general table of contents, so once you find an article you like, you have to thumb through 600-plus pages to find it again. Where's the piece on garlic bread? Who knows. Why do people say renaissance Florence contributed as much to music as it did to art and science? Can't find it. I don't believe in over-regimentation, but in this case, a little cataloguing would be a very good thing.

                    5 out of 5 stars A great compilation!.......2001-06-19

A guidebook without maps? A guidebook you can curl up and read cover-to-cover? Yes, this is it. As one who has vacationed in Tuscany for a total of 13 weeks in the past 6 years, I found this book not only evocative of fond memories but instructive by pointing me to places, eateries, and certain facts of Italian life of which I was unaware. The early sections covering tipping, car rental, trains, etc. are of particular help to the first time traveler. There's even a little Frances Mayes in there for the 1% of the people interested in Italy who have not read her books on Tuscany. But after reading this book, you'll have to get a map or two anyway...because you'll have booked a flight to bella Italia.

4 out of 5 stars A must for the Italian bookshelf.......2000-12-28

This is a lovely, evocative book that's also extremely useful and is a necessity for anyone who loves Tuscany and Umbria. A collection of little odds and ends about the area, this is a book to dip into or read from cover to cover. Leaning more heavily toward Tuscany than Umbria and omitting Le Marche (the only reason it didn't get 5 stars from me, because Tuscany has been covered so much already), it covers the major sights as well as hidden treasures, and chapters on the food, the people, and the art of Central Italy are especially fine. Many books include bibliographies, referring readers to other books on Italy, but Kerper's is especially comprehensive. The compiler's love for Italy comes shining through on every page. Nice photos, too! Because it's such a pretty book, this is also a pretty neat gift selection.

This is a book geared toward the young reader, but anyone with an interest in the Zapotec weavings and culture will find it a heartwarming and quick read. While visiting Oaxaca over Christmas I had the priviledge to meet Antoinetta in her kiosk at the Zocolo. This gracious lady introduced me to the book as well as to the beautiful works of her family.

4 out of 5 stars Last winter in Oaxaca I met a Zapotec family..........1997-07-14

"El libro, muestra el libro" said Senora Galan in the simple room of their home as we sipped hot chocolate against the chilly night air. Leo ran off and returned with a picture book which he presented to me, and returned to his mothers side to watch as I read. The book of course was Beneath the Stone: A Mexican Zapotec Tale, written about Leo and his family by Bernard Wolf.

I met Leo's mother in the marketplace in Oaxaca. She was standing in front of a table covered with beautiful woven rugs and wall hangings. When I admired her rugs and heard about the way she and her family weave them, in the same way their family has done for centuries, I was fascinated. The weavings on the wool rugs made intricate patterns, mostly traditional designs, Senora Galan told me, and are passed down family to family. The dies they use are from the plants around them, boiled for days in a tub in the bare yard of their home. We spoke for a while, and when Senora Galan discovered that I was a young woman traveling alone, she insisted that I stay with her family that night in Teotitlan de Valle, a short way from Oaxaca city. Feeling a bit lonely, I accepted, and was welcomed by the Galan family to their simple home.

Mr. Wolf's book, which I read in the room were he took many of the photos, beautifully describes the desolate beauty of Teotitlan and the warmth and kindness of the people to whom this land is home. Leo proudly watched as I read about him, following along the path of his day with the picture book. Leo, like the rest of his family, helps weave the rugs in the winter time, when the farm work is done. Beneath the Stone, details the steps involved in making the rugs, closely following the work from raw wool through dying and weaving until the finished products are stacked in a special room to await market day.

Mr. Wolf very accurately captures the feel of Teotitlan and the lives of its Zapotec inhabitants. His book details the lives of this family so well that Senora Galan was worried that perhaps too much was revealed about her family's trade secrets. She also seemed sad to not have heard from Mr. Wolf since he left their home to complete the book in New York. In an increasingly homogenous world, surviving traditional cultures like the Zapotec become more fascinating to the world. I recommed Beneath the Stone for children, because of its clear vision of another child's very different life, but I would hope parents would include with it a lesson on the dangers of exploitation.

5 out of 5 stars If Your Dog Could Talk.......2007-07-19

Dr. Bruce Fogle is my favorite animal behavioral author. I've read and reviewed books by the good doctor before and he always seems to provide me with a good deal of insight into my pets in a way that I can understand. If your dog could talk... is no exception.

The subtitle for this book is "A training guide for humans". Basically, this text is meant to teach us humans what our dogs are really thinking. Far too often, we infer human personality to our dogs' actions. For instance, we assume Puddles is peeing on the furniture because she's angry at us. The thought that she's in heat never enters our mind. Similarly, when Sparky jumps up at us when he greats us, we think he is being aggressive or showing his lack of training. Really, he just wants some regurgitated food like his Mommy used to provide (yuck!).

If you have a dog, know a dog, or are planning to get a dog buy this book. The insight you will gain will be invaluable. I guarantee you'll spend a lot more time enjoying your friend and a lot less time freaking out because you aren't sure what he or she is thinking.

                      5 out of 5 stars Glad I bought it........2007-06-02

This Doctor writes well, knows dogs as a vet and dog owner and is a real researcher. He's much more reliable as a source of real information than those that make up their own guesses about why dog behavior occurs. When it isn't known, he says so. This is my first dog, and the books by Bruce Fogle are very informative. The other books, particularly "The Dogs Mind" delve into brain anatomy and genetics to explain dog behavior. They are so differant from us, and yet so similar to us, as he makes so clear.

4 out of 5 stars for your teenager's first dog.......2002-03-16

Because I've read dozens of dog books by now, I'm pretty fussy about them. I want them to have fresh new insights to solving problems I've found unsolvable. For that, this is not a suitable book.

On the other hand, it is an EXCELLENT starter book, written in a simple and very readable style. This is the book I would choose to give a teenager who is starting out with a new dog. The questions are posed from the canine point of view with charming results. Here's one of my favorites:

"I enjoyed watching television when I lived in Europe, but now that I have moved to America, all I see is a blur. What has happened to my eyes?"

Fogle goes on to explain that European television transmission is higher speed than in the US. American transmission is slow enough that all dogs see is dots. This will be cured when high-definition TV becomes more popular in the US. (Learn something new every day....)
