Plants in Hawaiian Medicine, by Beatrice H. Krauss, is a short (150 pp.; 30 plants) book on traditional and contemporary uses of plants in Hawaii for medicinal purposes. The plants range from the well known (kalo [taro], noni [Indian mulberry], 'awa [kava], panini 'awa'awa [aloe]), to the more obscure ('ohi'a lehua ["ironwood"]).

Plants played a vital role in traditional Hawaiian life as food, shelter, clothing, medicine, transportation, and utilities. Although some of the common medicinal plants were endemic to the main Hawaiian islands, many were brought from the Marquesas by the Polynesians. They were brought, presumably, because they were considered valuable plants for food and medicine.

A considerable number of the traditional medicinal uses were for the treatment of thrush, a yeast fungus (Candida albican) infection of the mouth, especially for children. I assume by this (and it is an assumption) that this is because this was a common and troublesome aliment in infants. Given the nastiness of chewing on any part of the kalo plant [taro], with its "needlelike crystals of calcium oxalate," which if chewed are " released explosively, lodging in the lining of the mouth and tongue and causing great irritation," and the common presence of karo plants and products throughout Hawaiian life, I would suspect that infants become susceptible to this infection because of this irritation, leading to susceptibility (greater than in other populations) of infection by the thrush organism. Check out a website on "oral thrush disease" for more information on this.

There are some species in this book that were never present until after contact with Captain Cook (for example, kuawa [guava]. They were included by Krauss because these species were quickly added to the medicine cabinet of Hawaiian healers (kahuna la'au lapa'au).

Most of the plants have little application in contemporary medicine, although it is well known that pharmacological companies have renewed their interest in traditional medicines.

This is an inexpensive book, well-organized, that gives the reader insight into the culture of the traditional Hawaiian people. However, I am required by ethics to note that I am related to the late Bea Krauss by marriage. All proceeds from this book go to the University of Hawaii Foundation. To get a broader perspective of Bea Krauss' work, you should read her book, Plants in Hawaiian Culture (University of Hawaii Press).

4 out of 5 stars Healing Plants.......2001-06-18

Beatrice Krauss was a beloved ethnobotanist who spent a great deal of her lifetime studying Hawaiian plants and their uses; she was the first woman to earn a degree in agriculture from the University of Hawai`i. Her book is very well done and nicely illustrated with B&W line drawings by Martha Noyes (an award-winning writer and artist). Each of the 30 plants covered here has its own chapter with a nicely consistent set of information for each one. Included for each plant are: notes on the plant family, ecosystem and the history of its arrival in Hawai`i; a physical description and drawing; general (non-medicinal) uses; ancient uses and contemporary uses. Krauss cautions that her book is not to be used as a manual for medical practice!

One thing that you begin to notice right away in Krauss' book is that plants that we think of predominantly in terms of food or crafts actually had medicinal uses (like hala, taro, ti, sugar cane, koa, guava, kukui, seaweed, banana, mountain apple and sweet potato). Other interesting tidbits emerge as you read about each plant. For example, the word pupu (commonly used for "hors d`oeuvre" here) originally referred to a piece of banana that was eaten while drinking `awa (which is a tad unpalatable until you get used to it). Coral cuts are notorious for becoming infected. The next time you get a coral cut while snorkeling, snag a length of floating limu (seaweed), chew it and put it on the wound! The current fad of pushing noni as a cure for everything has little basis in historical Hawai`i - the plant's primary use was as a dye for tapa cloth. So.... you say you want to know how the Hawaiians used the sweet potato medicinally? How about for inducing vomiting, treating asthma, clearing up chest congestion, curing insomnia and increasing a nursing mother's milk supply - not too bad for a common food! This book is a fun, quick read and good to have on hand for reference.

5 out of 5 stars Great Resource for Those Who Want A Different Type of Vacation.......2007-09-07

          *****
I bought this book out of curiosity and was amazed at the variety of opportunities available to travel and contribute throughout the world. The book is a compendium of opportunities of every imaginable type, an incredible resource if you're even thinking about a taking a vacation in which you volunteer.

Each opportunity contains all contact information, include web site, the types of projects available, organization mission statements, the year founded, the number of volunteers last year (so that you can see the scope of the program), funding sources, what kind of work the organization does, project locations, time line (when and for how long commitments are made), cost (including arrangements that must be made like medical examinations), how to get started, needed skills, and the specific populations that could qualify.

The book is very friendly to those with limitations (for example, sight limitations, physical agility, etc.). There are also stories throughout the book from volunteers about their actual experiences while volunteering.

There is a section on long-term volunteering opportunities. There are four indexes: by project cost, project length, location, season, and type.

It is a wonderful book to use to explore what types of things you might like to do, as well as to use as a research base to search out specific opportunities. It is a great value, and an organized way to begin your volunteer journey!

          Highly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars a pleasant and helpful read.......2007-08-24

I'm sure you can get most of the information in this book online but there's nothing like being able to curl up with this while dogearing pages and marking it up. It is extremely well organized and indexed in multiple ways so you're sure to find what you're looking for. Once something gets your interest you can contact the organization or look online for more info. One really nice feature is the occasional presence of first person narratives from people who've actually done the vacations.

5 out of 5 stars Well organized wealth of info.......2007-07-29

This book was extremely well organized. I was able to quickly sort through for an organization that allowed teens and was for the duration of time we had available. From there, it was easy to go on the specific websites for the pretty pictures. We have just come back from our experience building homes in Costa Rica and can't wait to go again! You will never again feel the need for a beach vacation. It was much more invigorating to give something of yourself.

          5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2007-03-28

This book is very informative and easy to navigate. I was able to ready it over a 2 day period on my spare time and breakdown the vacations that would best suit what I am looking to do.

              Book Description

              Did you know that...

A hundred years ago Chicago had a miniature underground train system that criss-crossed beneath the streets, delivering coal and other materials? The trains could go right into a building's basement. Even today, few people know these tunnels exist....

Or that Paris has over six million skeletons buried in ancient chambers and tunnels beneath the city? The ancient Romans first dug up this spot while mining for rock, but 200 years ago the overcrowded city of Paris needed new space to bury its dead.

Hidden Worlds presents 11 intriguing stories of extraordinary tunnels past and present from around the world. This fascinating book will introduce you to nature's tunneling mammals; the ancient Greek myth of the Minotaur in the labyrinth; the aqueducts of the ancient Romans; the hidden treasure in the pyramids of Egypt; the great escape of WWII prisoners of war...and much more!

Richly portrayed with large cartoon-style illustrations and informative yet wickedly funny captions, the stories in this original collection make for a riveting read. You'll be amazed at the interesting facts you'll unearth.

An introduction provides an overview of the hidden world of tunnels, the varied reasons why people have constructed them since ancient times, and how they have done so.

A special chapter at the end of the book provides more detailed information on each story. Additional resources, such as websites, are included.

An index will help locate specific places and events in the book, making this a useful reference tool for young students.

1 out of 5 stars This book is "ESSENTIAL".......2001-12-31

Indeed, this book is about the best I've read on the subject thus far and is well balanced. I would have given FIVE stars however one thing perturbed me no end! This book contains the SAME information as THE ESSENTIAL AUSTRALIAN SHEPHERD and is mostly verbatim! The two books have entirely different titles, the author of one is not listed on the cover of the other, the publishers seem to be different and the dates of publication are different. Any reasonably intelligent ,trusting person would assume they were different books! Caveat emptor. I purchased both books, paid twice and about the only difference between them was one was hardcover and one was paperback...oh,and though the content inside was almost exactly the same, the covers were very different for some odd reason. I would search the library next time.

3 out of 5 stars OK advice but not precise enough.......2001-08-30

You cannot go wrong reading this book but do not expect to go train your Aussie to be a model dog citizen afterwards. There is not enough detail or practical advice on rewarding or motivating your dog, understanding individual temperments, or picking a trainer to work with. Indeed, much of the book reads like a template where the primary difference, besides the photos and breed history, between this book and any other dog-training guide would be the words "insert breed name here."

If you are interested in owning and training an Aussie, please first review the material at Aussierescue.org. Aussie are clever, playful, and engaging. If you own one, you know what it is like to have your dog watch you and to have an silent furry shadow underfoot.

4 out of 5 stars Explains Aussie Freakish Behaviour.......2001-07-30

This book is a handy manual because it is concise, pretty cheap..and tells you almost everything that the other books do - plus, the front photo is a masterpiece - that is the weirdest looking Australian Shepherd ever! Most are black & tan (the 'Tri' color) or white/grey/black spotted (the 'merle' color) but I haven't seen many that are both! A book like this is a lifesave if you aren't very familiar with the breed. Explains their intense energy level and need for 'a job' to do..and why many people are too stupid and lazy to own an Aussie..or any dog really. But seriously, don't get an Aussie unless you can absolutely promise to go on a minimum of 3 walks a day. Book also explains their need to herd things..their desire for an orderly existence and why crows and seagulls and livestock and other disorderly animals annoy them. And why, if you can provide the energy packed environment that they need, the Aussie is a great animal to own.

5 out of 5 stars A Book For All Aussie Lovers.......2001-05-25

This is a wonderful book about Australian Shepherds. It has almost anything an owner or soon to be owner could want: A short history of the breed, the ASCA and AKC standard, feeding, grooming, health & care, and more. Liz does a very good job of explaining everything like how an Aussie makes a good family pet, but it wants a job and plenty of excersize. It also has nice color photographs and a section a baisic training by Ian Dunbar. Liz's other book, "Australian Shepherds, Champions of Versitility" is also a great book. If you are looking into getting an Aussie, or already own one, this is a must read!

5 out of 5 stars This is a very informative Aussie book!.......1998-07-20

This is a great book for Aussie owners or owners-to-be. It tells you everything you need to know about these beautiful dogs. If your looking for a good book on Aussie's, this is the one.

Look up. New York's buildings are bedecked with a menagerie of creatures mythical and realistic, adorned by a population of gods and people genuine and imagined and trimmed with designs and details that range from the fanciful to the sublime. The architectural embellishments that decorate the city's stone buildings have suffered the ravages of time and indifference at the hands (and droppings) of pigeons, pollution, landlords, and vandals. But as photographer John Yang records in Over the Door, the city's architectural legacy still deserves our attention, appreciation, and protection.

                    Book Description

John Yang is a New York-based photographer whose landscape photographs?are?in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art, The Metropolitan Museum of?Art, The Smithsonian Institution, the Chasanoff Collection at the Museum?of Fine Arts, Houston, and many other important public and private?collections of photography.?

?From 1989 through 1993, Yang undertook an intensive photographic study of?the ornamental sandstone reliefs on New York City brownstones and?tenements of the late 19th century. The result is Over the Door, a?meticulously prepared and exquisitely produced volume of urban?portraiture -- Yang's photographs capture the various moods?of the many sculptured personalities that stand watch over the doorways,?spandrels, and arches of Manhattan. The photographs are also a study of?the effects of time on these carvings, which, regrettably, are rapidly?deteriorating from acid rain as well as the happenstance of real estate?development -- demolition and destruction each take their?toll on the carvings. Yang's methodical study of these relief?carvings -- he covered every block of Manhattan, from the?Lower East Side to Harlem, several times in his search for subjects?-- has yielded a valuable book for the sake of its subject alone;?but like Atget, Walker Evans, and other great "documentary" photographers,?Yang chose his specific subjects primarily for their value to him as?material for his art.?

?This dialogue between historical documentation and the artist's personal?vision makes Over the Door a landmark book of photography, as well?as a photographic book of landmarks. It also brings to the fore the?artwork of another era -- faces peering down from the many?layers of the modern urban streetscape.

This handsome little volume invites the reader to look up, at hand-carved decorative elements on buildings throughout Manhattan. Whether you are actually traveling or merely sitting in an armchair this offers a lovely way to slow down and really see examples from the past that have been preserved and/or are slowly deteriorating.

I checked this book out of the library years ago when researching forms of Art Deco architecture. This book is more experienced than read. The Gothic interpretation of Art Deco captures NYC's mysterious, imposing aura so well. NYC's architecture and infrastructure whisper nuances of our nation's history: guts, substance and imagination. The buildings have forms of expression rarely captured in today's commercial architecture. I am so glad that I was able to locate a copy for my own library.

4 out of 5 stars Extremely Stimulating and Worth Purchasing, But Not Flawless.......2002-05-06

I have probably read over a hundred books on artistic photography, and this is the most inspiring in terms of my personal development as a photographer. Still, it has some imperfections. Here are the pluses and minuses.

Pluses: First, the book (which accompanied a 2001 exhibition at the Estorick Collection of Modern Italian Art in London) packs a lot of good information. The core chapters include "The Image of Self," "Photodynamism," "Photo-Performance," "The Twenties," and "The Thirties." Toward the end of the book are biographies and a bibliography. The extensive coverage of Anton Giulio Bragaglia and Arturo Bragaglia was appropriate since the brothers were important in the history of photography. I had never heard of Tato (Guglielmo Sansoni), but he was clearly a major talent.

Second, the book is striking in design. The black-and-white photographs from 1909-1939 are beautifully reproduced. Each chapter begins with jumbled typography (even more radical than the cover) that matches the overall modernity of Futurists. Even the front and back covers and flaps of this signature-bound book are stylish.

Minuses: First, although the author is well known as an expert on Futurism, his text is abstruse. Consider this sentence on page 10: "By translating the infrasensorial and metaperceptive dimensions for the first time... photography seemed to penetrate the very mystery of life." I am not certain if the problem is the original text or the translation from the Italian.

Second, I felt there was too much emphasis on Fortunato Depero. He was certainly an important Futurist figure, and his self-portraits seem to be precursors of works by photographers such as Cindy Sherman and Nikki S. Lee. Nevertheless, I do not feel that the inclusion of 14 photographs/details by him (including self-portraits) and 18 other photographs OF him was a good use of space. I would have liked to see more works by artists such as Maggiorino Gramaglia, Edmund Kesting, and Wanda Wulz, whose photos are more visually intriguing than Depero's.

Finally, although the author puts the Futurist photographers in the broader context of Italian Futurists such as Marinetti and Azari, the book would have been stronger if he had compared in more detail Futurist photographers with contemporaries such as Alvin Langdon Coburn, John Heartfield, Man Ray, Laszlo Moholy-Nagy, and Alexander Rodchenko. Another set of comparisons could have involved "avant-garde" photographers who came before and after the Futurists. Perhaps a couple pages of text and images could have been devoted to the relationships of non-Futurist and Futurist photographers.

All things taken into consideration, I have put this book in a prominent place in my library and will be referring to it frequently. Buy it from Amazon.com!
