Pods: Alien beauty here on Earth!.......2001-06-05

While many focus their dried efforts on garden flowers or attempt to hold back the ravages of time on "hot house beauties", author Jane Embertson and photographer Jay Conrader focus on the almost otherworldly beauty found in the dried pods of wildflowers and weeds. This book has a lot to offer, whether to gardeners, naturalists or dried arrangement artists. Photos of 143 plants from NC to NE US ("where frost and freeze are common") are presented in their green plant and dried seed pod versions. Info is provided on blooming season, leaves, flowers, and where to find each kind of plant. So, it's great for weed identification. The icing on the cake for each plant is a photo showing an example of how to use it in a dried arangement! So there are a wealth of great ideas to stimulate creativity. Who would have thought "poke berry skeletons" might be useful? With the info Jane provides you can craft with colors ranging from purple-pink to pale pea-green to a rich raspberry just from pokeweed pods. Actually, a whole arrangement could be made from "noxious" weeds. (There's a "value-added" idea for a small farmer with an excess of weeds in the pasture!)

This book is "to die for". IF you can track down a used copy of this book, it's worth every penny. Enjoy.

A marvelous reference book.......1999-08-01

Pods - Wildflowers and Weeds in Their Final Beauty by Jane Embertson is one of my favorite books on dried flowers. Great color photos of 144 plants flowering in the field, dried pods and used in an arrangement. The auther gives bloom time, flower description, leaf description and a description of where and when to pick the pods. There is an additional section of 28 black & white photos of grasses and "winter skeletons". This is a marvelous reference work with a total of

460 photos that are each a work of art.

An excellent fall and winter guide, even for a beginner........1998-08-27

This book is a real treasure. I bought my first copy in November, when the central Indiana countryside is dormant in shades of gray and brown. During a ten minute walk I found and was able to identify seven plants I didn't even know existed in our overgrown field. I own a small nature and garden shop and have recommended this book many times as an excellent way to identify common weeds and wildflowers when the bloom has faded. I highly recommend "Pods" for the beginning naturalist or crafter using everlasting materials.

handy guide.......2007-08-24

I found this guidebook indispensable on my recent visit to Stockholm - the brief restaurant write-ups were spot on, and it contained a much greater level of detail than other guidebooks I looked at.

I found the maps very useful as well; they are aided by the layout of the book - all lodging in one chapter, all dining in another chapter, nightlife in its own chapter, etc, rather than dividing the chapters by region. Once I got used to the layout, it was very intuitive.

That said, it's always a good idea to look at a guidebook first in a bricks-and-mortar store before buying it online, because personal tastes do vary.

I am ususally a DK Eyewitness fan, but the Lonely Planet Stockholm was more recent in it's copywright. Most information was helpful except when heading to Gripsholms Slott, which wasn't open to any public until May, we visited in February.
Also some of the stores noted for shopping in Galma Stad didn't exist.

Reliable guide for an amazing Scandinavian city.......2006-08-15

Becky Ohlsen provides an excellent, personalized overview of Stockholm's many museums, cafes, hotels, etc. We relied on her book for our too-brief three-day stay in the city, and were consistently happy with the advice given. Recommended.

Decent Guide to Stockholm.......2006-02-20

Good coverage of history and has more detail than most city guides by other publishers. The maps are good but a removable fold-out would have been better. Overall an interesting read and useful resource.

Lovely Look At The Heart Of A Labrador Retriever!.......2002-12-20

For someone like me who has spent countless hours, days and weeks in the company of four or more Labrador Retrievers, this book is a hoot. It take s light-hearted look at Labradors, and at the personality traits and character qualities that make them the single most popular breed in America today. Labs are among the most social of canines, yet they are remarkably calm and pacific once they know you. Which isn't to deny the fact that they are very active and energetic, and that anyone who lives with one needs to ensure the dog and he or she spend sopme time outside in vigorous play every day. But as the author tells us, we love labradors because they seem to represent the best and most admirable qualities we happen to admire.

Labradors are amazingly loyal, and are quite keyed into your emotional state and sense of well-being. As a person who sometimes suffers from migraines, I can attest that the dogs seem to reconize my symptoms and key their own behavior from this perception of the way I am feeling, being much more willing to simply take a nap with me than usual, since they seem to understand from past experience that the migraine will dirve me back to bed. They show many endearing and reamrkable traits, and we find ourselves amazed b just how intelligent, preceptive, and attractive they are as a species.

Labradors also live almost exclusively in the moment, and are ethusiastic and energetic in their pursuit of fun and frolic. Anyone living in their company can attest to the fact that you are never at a loss for entertainment when your Labrador friend is around, and he or she are happy to just be with you, and are almost oo willing and too anxious to show you just how excited they are to have you around. Coming home after a long day's work means a kidn of instant celebration, with four Labradors jumping, barking, and wall-banging, so glad are they to have me back home with them. Find a human who is that glad to see you, and you have found true love, my friend. Yet it is all here in spades with the Labradors, and this entertaining little book will seerve to amuse you, educate you, and sometimes surprise you with its nuggets of information, parcels of knowledge, and bits of wisdom about just why it is that "Labradors Rule". Enjoy!

enlightening and detailed.......1998-06-05

Considering I live about ten miles away from the author and visited her garden with my club last summer, one might not think me a very objective critic. And regarding this book, I'm probably not. I found the book full of good information about the perennials that florish here in unpredictable zone 5, and great suggestions for beautiful color combinations. The book is really for avid gardeners who are interested in further studies of particular plants and their cultivars, and the experiences of a gardener/artist who treats the garden as her canvas. She is a bit of a garden snob, and if you are partial to cutsey planters and other garden fixtures, don't bother with this book.
