Customer Reviews:
A must have reference.......2001-05-21
For both the novice and the expert, this is a great book to have while traveling, walking in the woods or biking. Even in the classroom studying the native plants, this easy to read reference will add to the education of students. Referenced by color of flower, there are over 100's of photos of plants in their native habitate along with pictures of their leaves. There is more than just a botanical description. Whimsy folklore about the plants will enhance the readers enjoyment. Ever wonder why the forget-me-not got its name and why the Thistle is the national Scottish symbol? For a quick reference and review of native flowers you will be glad you got ROADSIDE PLANTS AND FLOWERS.
A user friendly source book.......2000-03-08
good photographs and information for fast identification of the familiar plants we see so often---and others not so familiar. The author includes interesting information about the specimens making it more interesting than the usual botanical guides. Very useful to an out-of-state traveler
over rated guide book.......1999-12-22
This was a disappointment, especially when the Title promises so much more. Standard Audubon's still provide the best. We wished more unfortunately received much the less

Customer Reviews:
Don't let the small size fool you!.......2007-06-29
I was first surprised that this is a postcard-sized book, but the information packed into it is great. Each page spread lists a different site that is kid-friendly. The top of the page has a quick reference: hours, admission, recommended ages, contact information. Then there's a quick synopsis of the site, along with some "Keep in Mind" info, "Eats for Kids," and "Hey, Kids!" that provide some important details.
I especially like that it give some little hints, such as where to park, arrive early, the layout is set up well for families, etc.
And because it's small, it would be easy to tuck into a diaper bag or backpack for an outing.
The only downside is that it should be updated. With its 2002 copyright, things have changed (admission prices if nothing else). I also wish it included a map of the sites listed, as the addresses don't make a lot of sense to those not familiar with the city.
All in all, though, a good little guidebook.
Good but out of date.......2005-07-31
This is a great book, but the most recent edition was written in 2002. Therefore, it recommends things that aren't there anymore and omits things that you shouldn't miss. Even so, my 7 year-old enjoyed having her very own guidebook and picked out a number of activities for our vacation from it, including a few (like DuPage Children's Museum) that we would never have found without it.
Very usefull!.......2001-05-19
This book is very usefull when visiting Chicago with kids. It has neat ideas and places to go with kids, apart from the traditional Chicago highlights. It made our stay very fun and interesting, we really recommend it!
Sight-seeing made easy.......2000-08-31
I found this book to be MOST helpful in planning a visit to the Windy City with my children, ages 5 and 9. The book lists over sixty activities found in and around Chicago, and includes prices, age appropriateness, hours, phone numbers, and even kid-friendly eateries in the area. I recommend this book to anyone traveling with children. It is also a great gift idea if you have family or friends living in the Chicago area. Happy Traveling!

A book to be read and read again........2004-09-17
The older I get, the more I appreciate the vast generosity of horses - and the more I value the rare trainers and riders who are willing to live up to that generosity by truly putting the horse's welfare first. Mr. Herbermann is one of these, and A Horseman's Notes is a wonderful meditation on the lessons learned through a lifetime of riding.
There are sentences here that have the power to change your riding ... if you're ready to read them.
Whenever I see a rider kicking, pushing and fiddling to "make the horse round" or " get him on the bit," I think of Mr. Herbermann's injunction that everything in front of the withers is a "billboard" on which the horse posts his minute-by-minute evaluation of the rider's seat ... and on which the rider writes only at the risk of losing the horse's trust and partnership!
Whenever I hear riders talking about horses as if they were lazy children who have to be forced to work "for their own good," I remember Mr. Herbermann's warnings about the need for riders to put their ambition aside and LISTEN to their horses instead of constantly dictating and demanding. And so on and so forth...
Equally valuable are the illustrations, which show great classical masters riding proud, confident, relaxed horses: a picture-is-worth-a-thousand-words antidote to the stressed out, overbent, tail-wringing performances that give dressage a bad name.
This book goes on the shelf next to Wajten, Podhajsky, Oliveira and the other classics. If you're looking for quick fixes, go elsewhere. But if you're ready to venture into a way of riding that acknowledges the horse as a full and valued partner, then this is a book to read and read again.
A Horseman's Notes.......2004-02-07
Mr. Herbermann has shown us the way to enter the sanctuary of the horse. This book, A Horseman's Notes, makes the path crystal clear. I've seen Erik ride; he practices what he preaches. Even difficult horses soon come under his tea cozy. If you've been searching for the truth about riding and training horses, this book will shed some much needed light on the subject. Thank you, Erik...and my horses thank you! You are a true Master of Horsemanship.

Excellent as a quick reference.......2001-12-13
Filled with gorgeous full color photography, Professor Marshall Craigmyle's The Long-Flowering Garden is an impressive and superbly illustrated encyclopedic listing of more than 500 plants of all types, with each entry offering a given flower's common name, height, spread, aspect, preferred soil type, hardiness, means of propagation, flowering time, short description, and perhaps most useful, a listing of the pros and cons for choosing that specific flower for one's garden. An index makes looking up basic information on any flower a snap. The Long-Flowering Garden is excellent as a quick reference, and simply wondrous to page through to admire the brilliant horticultural photographs on every page.

Gabrielle Alizay makes Feng Shui understandable........2007-07-20
I have really enjoyed reading this book. I have been interested in Feng Shui for years but could never find a book that defined it so well as this one does. She set me straight about the differences in Feng Shui practices and how to use intention along with techniques. Great book with no confusion!
Kristi
Feng Shui Fantastic.......2007-03-23
Super easy to read! Humorous and fun. Alizay un-mystifies a foreign mystery . One that will help direct our lives onto a better path. Tibetan Black Hat Feng Shui is much less complicated than the Chinese compass version. It is much more forgiving as long your actions are done with intent. This book gives real world examples and understand that we dont live in a perfect world- otherwise there would be no need for Feng Shui anyway. So far i have been very please with the book and the results. If nothing else, it has made me take a closer look at how i am living, my surroundings and what they say about me and why.
Shill Alert.......2007-01-28
As of Jan 2007 all but three reviews of this book were made in November 2005. They read like they were written by the same person to me.
Feng Shui Confusion Cleared.......2006-02-14
I have purchased several books in the pursuit of understanding and applying feng shui to my home. After all, I know that I feel better in rooms that are uncluttered and clean per basic feng shui principles. Therefore I hoped to dig deeper into feng shui applications to discover how to increase the sense of peace and comfort into my home.
This is the book that I needed to make sense of the other books that I own, although this book could just as easily stand on its own. Gabrielle Alizay has a simple, straightforward, and down-to-earth style of writing. She imparts her knowledge in an easily accessible manner and encourages readers to make the art of feng shui "their own." She doesn't bog readers down esoteric mumbo jumbo, but explains how gain positive results by personalizing things within one's own belief system.
Feng shui is not some mysterious religion, but rather a science of symbols and their effect on our subconscious mind. This was the book that cleared the confusion of feng shui and made it easy to understand how to put it into practice. When reading other books on feng shui, I use "Feng Shui for the Rest of Us" as a sort of feng shui encyclopedia or reference guide. But, if I could only keep one book on feng shui, this one would be it.
Feng Shui for me...........2006-01-14
I hardly knew about Feng Shui before I read this book--Plus, I really was not interested--so I guess I was a skeptic. A friend gave me the book for Christmas. And though I still am a skeptic to a degree, Alizay seems to describe Feng Shui in a way that I found surprisingly charming and easy to understand. I have tried a couple of her suggestions and I have been rather amazed. I had results! I am still not a complete convert, but the book is enjoyable to read, well-written, and worth the time investment for anyone to finally "get" a bit of comprehension on what this Feng Shui "frenzy" is all about.

Customer Reviews:
Lots of fun with feng shui!! .......2004-08-18
As a college student, I found Feng Shui with What You have an insightful book on how to make any living space harmonious without breaking the bank. The book contained many great tips on how to create a stylish yet comforting environment using what you already own. After using the remedies found in the book to properly feng shui my apartment, it transformed into a more welcoming space. The book combines ancient feng shui methods with contemporary trends. By making simple changes to the placement of my furniture and by adding touches of specific colors, my apartment and the mood of all those in the apartment changed for the better. I would recommend Feng Shui with What You Have to anyone looking to make an improvement to not only their living space but their life in general.
Feng Shui without fear!.......2004-07-07
I have browsed other books about feng shui that have made the subject seem impossibly arcane as well as very impractical for a westerner. FENG SHUI WITH WHAT YOU HAVE is accessible and clear; it not only explains what feng shui is and how it works as a philosophy, but also how you can put it to practical work in your home. One of the beauties of the book is that it's full of advice whose implementation requires only your attention and some time--you can make many positive improvements without spending a cent. I keep going back to the book as I tackle one problem spot or another in my home. In the long term relationship between you and your space, this book is a keeper.

Customer Reviews:
Fun hints, but you'll need another book for context........2001-07-13
This is a cute little book to keep on the coffee table and flip through during commercials, or even to use as a reference when you've just brought home a new decorative item and don't know where to put it. Each page lists one "do" or "don't", and the pages are arranged alphabetically according to subject. For example, under "Hallways" you'll find suggestions on how to mitigate the negative effects of a long narrow hall. Unfortunately, some of the suggestions won't be helpful to anyone not planning to move or completely renovate their home.
Without some other knowledge of feng shui, these tips may be bewildering. Some call for arranging items that most western households don't have around, such as crystals and Chinese coins. Some are just confusing, like saying to place a bird in a southwest room facing north but only if it's green, otherwise put it in a north room facing south, unless it's a metal bird figure then it has to be in a west room on the east wall. I'm paraphrasing here, so for heaven's sake don't try this out.
A few of the tips are so simple and striking as to make the whole book worthwhile. The words on gardens are particularly lovely. If you're planning to rearrange your entire household though, you will need more help.

Sell Your Home Using Feng Shui.......2002-03-09
Excellent book for its intent. I am a realtor and give this as a gift to sellers who list their homes with me. Sellers love its simplicity and suggestions to totally change a home's environment quickly and with little or no expense. The book is very useful.
Any realtor could write a simpler and better book.......2001-08-30
We don't live in pristine castles and we don't sell homes as such. I do wonder where Feng Shui came in, other than clearing the clutter???

Customer Reviews:
A useless book.......2006-02-17
I was already surprised when I received a book called "What is Feng Shui?" and it was so small! I know something about Feng Shui and it is not explainable in such a small space! And reading it my impression was confirmed: no interesting information but a skeptical point of view, aiming to say, in the end, that Feng Shui is a " farrago of nonsense and childish absurdities". So, Feng Shui student, do not buy this book because it is completely useless. And a little irritating, too.
Federica Lang
I would rate it no star, if I could.
