Customer Reviews:
A good introductory book.......2000-12-24
This is a good introductory book for the casual hiker or Southern Californian who has some desire to learn about native plants. Its strong point is that many of the plants that one might notice in the local San Gabriel Mountains are pictured in this book, and many of the plants in the book are easy to find in the local mountains and canyons. It has good pictures, and an interesting paragraph on each plant or tree. Usefully grouped into sections (conifers, sages, succulents, etc), and also has some brief technical sections and lists. I have enjoyed carrying it around on short hikes, and found it sort of breaks the ice for a novice/beginner. It is not, nor intended to be, a super-definitive book.
Local Knowledge Enriches Our Worlds.......2000-02-05
I found this book in our local library and knew that I must own a copy. The book provides excellant color photographs for identification, and common names of the vegetation, which is far preferable for the amature enthusiast. I have come to feel more a part of our little canyon melieu, now that I can identify by name some of its common and familiar flora.
This is the book that taught me about Native Plants........1999-09-01
I always assumed that many of the plants I saw along the road were native plants. This is a very valuable resource for anyone who would like to know what they are seeing every day on their commute or on a trip through the state. I always carry a copy in my car. The landscape is so much more beautiful when you know something about it! It also helped when my son brushed against stinging nettles and developed a temporary welt. Start with this book, then become a lover and defender of our most important heritage.
Book Description
Each year, more American families travel to England, Scotland and Ireland than any other foreign tourist destination. But how can parents keep young travelers engaged in their surroundings and interested in the trip? In Once Upon a Time in Great Britain, author Melanie Wentz provides information about attractions, restaurants, and other sights tied to dozens of beloved childrens books and authors throughout the British Isles and includes many of the books classic illustrations. Each chapter covers classics such as:Winnie the Pooh, Peter Rabbit (and other Beatrix Potter tales), and Paddington Bear for the younger tourists Alice in Wonderland and The Secret Garden for older kids C.S. Lewiss Chronicles of Narnia Series and J.K. Rowlings Harry Potter books for all readers. Wentz also helps travelers make the most of visits to the towns and other sights that inspired the magical worlds of such authors as Roald Dahl, J.R.R. Tolkien and Dr. Dolittles Hugh Lofting, among many others. From parents who grew up on Wind in the Willows and Peter Pan to kids who thrill to Babe or Harry Potter, this book will make the family trip to England a hit for the whole family.
Customer Reviews:
Great Armchair Travel Book.......2003-11-12
The woods where C. S. Lewis and J. R. R. Tolkien used to walk together, the coffee shop where J. K. Rowling began her work on the Harry Potter series, the house that inspired the Borrowers, the locations of The 101 Dalmatians...
It is apparent from reading this book that the author spent a great deal of time researching the topics covered. The byline indicates that she spent a year with her family exploring England and Scotland.
Fans of the books covered will enjoy the brief (1-2 page) biographies and the descriptions of the locations. This is what some call an "armchair travel" book: you can enjoy it without ever traveling to the locations.
I can't comment on the accuracy, because I have not visited any of the locations described. This is not a slick travel book brimming with pictures; it's a soft-cover printed on relatively inexpensive paper. I enjoyed the biographies and site descriptions and I'm sure there are many others out there who will as well.
A must-have for British kid lit fans.......2003-08-19
This is a great book for anyone who wants to plan a trip around, or include in their trip, sights related to favorite children's books. She even includes some of the books that are not as well-known in the US such as The Borrowers, Green Knowe and Greyfriars Bobby. Double check the details before you go, however, as some things have changed since publication. For example, the exhibit of children's manuscripts at the British Library is no longer there, sadly.
Brilliant idea ý scant execution.......2003-04-06
Written by a teacher who spent a year in England and Scotland with her family visited the sights mentioned in various kids' books. Not being from that area it is fun to visit the England that you are looking for whether it is the old Roman Empire or Shakespeare. For kids this book carries you through the England and Scotland of fairytales and stories. Each site has a small blurb and a black and white sketch. There are a few monochrome photos but there is nothing consistent. It may be useful for a starting point.

Customer Reviews:
Clear, Concise and Fun.......2004-04-13
Finally! a book that explores feline health, behavior and feline/human communication with intelligence, sensitivity and humor. I initially purchased the book searching for practical solutions to some behavioral problems we were experiencing with our family cat (they actually worked!) but learned much more about what our cat was trying to tell us in the process. The format makes the material incredibly accessible, and the quality of information makes this book a must-have resource for both the experienced and novice cat owner alike. It also makes a perfect gift for friends welcoming a new cat into their lives.
Fantastic Resource for Cat Caretakers.......2004-04-12
Practical, fun, and perceptive, Janine Adams' contribution to the "How to Say It" books is an invaluable resource for cat lovers everywhere. This book is chock-full of practical advice, invaluable resources and straight-forward descriptions, all in a delightful format. I particularly appreciate Ms. Adams' holistic, positive and caring approach - it is obvious that she loves and understand cats. 4 paws up!
Great Reader- and Cat-Friendly book, full of useful info.......2004-04-12
This book is full of valuable information and advice about understanding your cat. Each complete, yet short chapter covers a different issue or problem, with ideas on what your cat is trying to tell you, how you can best deal with the situation, and what problems and pitfalls to avoid.
There are more than 50 chapters to help you understand just about anything you might face with your cat. From litter box problems, to grooming, to hairballs, it's all covered! Adams offers great insights and a variety of options to solve problems and prevent them in the first place. Her advice is cat-friendly and helps you strengthen the bond with your favorite feline.
I've had cats my whole life, and this book is my new favorite resource when I have a question or concern about my two current cats. It's also a great book for the person new to cats. I have two copies -- one to loan out, and one to have on hand when I have a question myself.
An insult to anyone's intelligence.......2004-03-20
Not content to put words in cat's mouths, pet psychic-style, she introduces the lunacy of Bach flower remedies and the nonsense of Tellington Touch (what you and I call "petting) to compound a worthless book.
"How to Talk to Your Cat" by Jean Craighead George is more reliable. Or even Roger Caras' "A Cat is Watching"
If you want reliable information in this format try "100 Questions Your Cat Would Ask Its Vet" by Bruce Fogle.
Book Description
The fascinating evolution of jewelry designs by Indian artist of the American Southwest is documented in this exciting new book. Over 100 years of changing economic and cultural influences have been decisive for the designs of this jewelry. Some Traditional-style jewelry continues to be made today as it has been for centuries, while other forms date themselves to narrow ranges when certain materials, techniques, markets, and popularity influenced their designs. The concise yet highly informative text is joined with over 450 captioned, glorious color photographs of this exciting jewelry. From silver, shell, and turquoise to gold, diamonds and other exotic materials, the revolution in Southwest Indian jewelry is visually captured here. Belts, buckles, bracelets, necklaces, men's jewelry, earrings, and pins are chronologically arranged, and the jewelers of most pieces are identified with their tribal affiliations. Galleries, dealers, collectors, and other artists will appreciate this study of stunning designs.

Native Plants of the Northeast: A Guide for Gardening and Conservation
ASIN: 0811729486 |
Book Description
Henry David Thoreau went alone to Walden Pond in 1845 and observed the ferns and turtleheads, the sundrops and spatterdocks, and the other beautiful native plants that formed a natural garden around his cabin. He walked the woods and fields and penned his observations in his journals. Noted plantsman Peter Loewer combines excerpts from Thoreau's journals with his own botanical illustrations and comments.
Customer Reviews:
What if Thoreau could plant a garden today?.......2006-06-04
Pick any subject, it seems, and odds are good that someone has compiled a volume of Thoreau quotes about it. But "Thoreau's Garden" is not a mere collection of his observations about plants (actually: 47 plants, 2 trees, and one insect). Author Peter Loewer has combined Henry's pithy journal entries with supporting details about each specimen. Included are descriptions of the leaves, flowers, fruit, and soil preferences. A follow-up essay for each one provides the history and biology of the plant, how it is pollinated, its possible medicinal uses, and gardening tips. Each entry is accompanied by a beautiful and detailed line drawing, which must have been done by the author, since no additional illustration credit appears. Here we can learn more about ferns and berries, goldenrods and grasses. Readers can even get a glimpse of the "disgusting ... yet very suggestive" fungus (Phallus impudicus) that Thoreau railed about in October 1856, pondering "Pray, what was Nature thinking of when she made this? She almost puts herself on a level with those who draw in privies." (pp. 156-158)
Loewer used as his reference the index in the Dover two-volume reprint of Thoreau's journals, which is indeed a helpful starting point but is far from complete. If he had consulted Ray Angelo's meticulous "Botanical Index to the Journal of Henry David Thoreau," his task would have been much more daunting. Picking only 50 samples from a single-spaced list spanning 144 pages would be a challenge. And because Loewer at one time was affiliated with the Botanical Gardens of Asheville (NC), he can be forgiven for adding some Southern species and cultivars that Thoreau would never have seen.
Similar in design and coverage to Laura C. Martin's "Wildflower Folklore" but with a Thoreauvian twist, this book is a nice selection for nature library shelves.
Who knew?.......2001-09-07
I had been reading, and admiring, this book for two years when I found out that Mr. Loewer worked on the same Environmental Show as myself: we are all vols, so it is no wonder we have never met. This book is truely a showcase of Mr. Loewer's talents': THOREAU'S WRITINGS ARE ALWAYS THERE, BUT THE PLAY 2ND FIDDLE TO THE WONDER OF AMERICA'S NATURAL BEAUTY. Great effort: a must for any lover of native plants.

Customer Reviews:
Just for Fun........2002-01-11
Compare street scenes in photos taken decades ago with comparable shots taken today. You are either fascinated by this concept or simply couldn't care less. I happen to enjoy it. This is not a history, an atlas, or a summary of classic "postcard" views of Washington as the nation's capital. This is instead a curiosity for anyone who has lived in Washington DC long enough to have some sense of the city's layout and neighborhoods. And therein is this book's value-- these photos concentrate foremost on everyday residences, commerce, and transportation in neighborhoods within a city. The photos ARE the story. Captions are minimal; these provide anecdotal background to establish the episodic human significance of a given site. The streetscape changes captured in then-and-now images suggest how techological and cultural evolution conspire to alter the character of place.

The Silk Route: 7,000 Miles of History

Release Date: 1993-10-19 |
Book Description
In 1944, when Song Nan Zhang was not yet three, he saw a baby tiger outside the hut in the mountains where he and his mother were living. The tiger returned twice before disappearing into the bamboo forest forever. For a child to see a tiger meant luck, but Song Nan Zhang wasn’t sure if living in China was lucky or not. Life was so difficult that sometimes he felt like the lost tiger itself, hoping for a home only to be forced back into the dark.
In this, his autobiography, Song Nan Zhang paints the dispersal of his family, his development as an artist, the humor that lightened some of the more difficult times, and finally, his journey to Canada.

At the East Bay French-American School in Berkeley, California, the students and teachers grow a garden of delicious herbs and vegetables. Their curriculum includes tasting, cooking, and eating the harvest to establish a connection between the earth and daily life. This well-put-together book teaches even gardening novices how to do it, too. The book features colorful line drawings, photographs of the kids in action, delicious recipes that even five-year-olds can help prepare, and great little sidebars on subjects as diverse as "Composting," "How Flowers Drink," and how to hold a "First Sprout Party."
Customer Reviews:
The perfect toddler project book!.......1999-10-31
This delightful book is an especially helpful tool for the beginning gardener. It will guide you and your children through all the basics of creating your very own garden. What a wonderful project for a toddler! Based on a gardening project started at the French-American School in Berkeley, California, this book will take you from planning and planting to harvesting and cooking delicious herbs and vegetables. The recipes are almost entirely vegetarian; including Herb Mayonnaise, Corn, Rice and Tomato Salad with Basil, and Snap Bean and Potato Soup with Pasta, just to name a few. Also includes a resource section for seed suppliers and more.

Beautiful star quilt book.......2005-08-27
This lovely book introduces ways to use pineapple patchwork techniques for those quilts which feature one single large star on the quilt top. Paper piecing techniques are used and this sumptuous book provides plenty of information and some wonderful patterns with which to learn the technique.
There is an extensive section covering different ways of handling fabric and design to produce different effects and the author does not forget to cover the importance of quilting in finishing the work. Indeed, the final pattern in the book displays the most exquisite stipple quilting I have ever seen. There is also a chapter discussing a variety of different layouts so that you can produce more effects with the large diamonds used in these quilts.
The workmanship in the sample quilts on display in the book is superb. The nine patterns included will allow you to create several different sizes of quilt in each pattern thus allowing for the needs of quilters in different circumstances. Full yardage charts are included with clear instructions and I really cannot recommend this too highly.

Very instructive small book........2006-07-13
Excellent small book with design ideas and instructions of several different styles of dried flower designs. It also covers pressed flowers, potpourri, garlands and wreath making. It also gives a few everlasting flowers in a catalog at the back. For those wanting to try arranging with dried flowers this is a good start up book. The instructions are clear and the photos are well done. There is no information about how to dry and store flowers only how to collect for potpourri. The catalog at the back could well have been eliminated since it covers very few plants it's not really worth a lot. The rest of the book however is very instructive. I would not recommend this be the only book purchased for dried flowers but it is a good companion book filling in many areas that other books do not.

Book Description
In Islamic Family Law in a Changing World, Abdullahi A. An-Na'im explores the practice of the Shari'a, commonly known as Islamic Family Law. An-Na'im shows that the practical application of Shari'a principles is often modified by theological differences of interpretation, a country's particular customary practices, and state policy and law.

Best Book We Have Found on Painting the Horse.......2003-03-15
This is a biography of a woman who loved horses and who painted them with feeling and style. Not only has Lucy Kemp-Welch mastered the art of painting horses but she has mastered the art of landscape painting as well. Here is a book you can return to time after time and always see something new. It is an excellent reference for anyone wanting to paint horses or landscapes. Its many color reproductions are excellent quality.
It is the best book we have found on painting the horse.
the most amazing horse paintings ever.......1999-02-18
If you are a big fan of horse painters you MUST have this book! Not only does Kemp-Welsh paint on par with the masters of the day, but she also captures the very essence of the horses she paints. I have never seen horse paintings that equal these, and am shocked that she is not more widely know. Hopefully, this book will help solve that problem.

This book which tells the stories of ten survivors of Terezin, a "showcase" Nazi concentration camp established to host visits by the International Red Cross, lends a unique perspective to the Holocaust literature.
Twenty-year old Franta supervised young boys, aged 12 to 14, in Room 7 and the lessons he taught them under the most adverse circumstances were incredible. They were educated in secret by him and other prisoners about their Jewish religion, history, culture and secular subjects. Education has always been of prime importance to Jews, but the fact that they were able to instill children with so much information under the most adverse circumstances was a miracle.
As you continue reading you have to feel that Franta was a gift from God to help the children get through this horrendous ordeal, despite the suffering and inhumanity happening all around them. Somehow he provided them with a stability that allowed them to eventually marry, raise families and lead productive lives. How wise, far beyond his years, he had to be.
Despite the unspeakable horrors the young boys witnessed, their perseverance, resilience, humanity and friendship won out. This should be required reading for all Confirmation classes.
An Extraordinary Book.......2005-04-29
An extraordinary book in whih a twenty-year old, named Franta, during the most terrifying of times, inspires forty ten and twelve years olds who were torn from their families, with a faith in their own humanity, with a will to live, and "a respect for our parents and the past, and to be ready for life when this [the Holocaust] ends." The stories of ten of the survivors and how they managed to survive extends to after the war and emphasizes the bonds that continue to exist in adulthood between them. "Nesarim" is an inspiration for young and old.

A Tale of Courage.......2005-04-25
This is the war-time story of the boys in Room 7 at the infamous Nazi concentration camp, Terezin, in Czechoslovakia. Thelma Gruenbaum's book, "Nesarim," is a heart-stopping tale of courage and survival.
Almost 50 years after the boys walked out of Terezin, Gruenbaum embarked on her mission to find the survivors. Her determination to tell their story was inspired by her husband,Michael, one of the boys in Room 7.
Travelling the world, the Gruenbaums interviewed ten who survived with Michael [Misa]. Many of the boys had never spoken of their experiences at Terezin but in 1990, as men of 60, and encouraged by Thelma Gruenbaum, they opened their souls to share those tales.
The meaning of the word "Nesarim" is Eagles, a name the boys of Room 7 gave themselves. Their stories give truth and meaning to the name as we witness their indomitable spirit.
An inspiring story that reminds us that courage and humanity can be stronger than the forces of destruction. Thelma Gruenbaum has told an important story and done so beautifully.
Real History.......2004-11-24
I was Born in Prague 1933. My family knew the Gruenbaum family well. I was fortunate to leave the country in 1941. After reading NESARIM I now know exactly and vividly what my fate might have been; would have been!
The book is well written and the descriptions of people places and events come to life along with their innermost feelings.
