Book Description
Chances are, whether or not you've heard of the Slow Food movement, you're familiar with slow food. It could be the best corn on the cob you've had all summer, or the ballpark frank that saw you through the seventh inning stretch at the last Cubs game. Slow Food is simply about the whole experience of food, from production to preparation to enjoyment and conviviality.* It is a revolutionary international movement that prizes locally sourced foods and sustainable agriculture, and slowly, its manifesto is gaining ground. Now an inventive new series of Slow Food guidebooks has food critics and travelers raving. This September, the publisher that brought you The Slow Food Guide to New York City (2003) releases the second book of the series, The Slow Food Guide to Chicago: Restaurants, Markets, Bars. Written by a team of Chicago natives and members of Slow Food USA, the guide reviews over 300 Chicago area establishments and serves up a fresh, comprehensive look at the city's diverse food landscape.
Customer Reviews:
Somewhat Out-Of-Date.......2006-11-10
The reviews are a few years out of date and some of the restaurants no longer exist. Much of the space dedicated to expensive restaurants where I was looking for more reasonably-priced places.
Fantastic guide for eating your way through Chicago.......2006-08-24
Whether you're a serious foodie or someone who loves to eat, this book is invaluable (if you're in Chicago...) It's quite different from Zagat's (no democratic process), cheap-good-real-food guides like Streets and San Man (which is also great) or Roadfood, or any Fodor's-style restaurant or travel guide. It's just about good food, of all prices, in any location, from tacos to truffles. The "slow food" monkier refers not to the speed of service but to the anti-fast food philosophy/movement (the "Slow Food Foundation") behind this series of books. The philosophy is sort of similar to the Chowhound guides, but I personally prefer the Slow Food ones.
Many famous restaurants far above my budget, such as Charlie Trotter's, are included (especially in the French and American sections), but many (most?) entries focus on affordable options, sit-down or takeout, serving dozens of cuisines in dozens of neighborhoods throughout this vast city. The writers must be well tuned-in to Chicago foodie circles, as the exterior appearance of some recommended places leaves you unsure whether the restaurant still exists, much less prepared for the excellent food about to be served.
On their recent visit to Chicago, two friends and I spent three days basically eating or recuperating from meals at places recommended by this book. We had Costa Rican, Polish, Ukranian, Lithuanian, Indian, Soul Food, German, Cuban, American (diner) and Mexican, all of which were excellent. The indices (by neighborhood and cuisine) and detailed maps make choosing your next target a breeze.
The one drawback we had was that some of the places recommended turned out to no longer exist, despite the book being written the year before. This isn't necessarily the authors' fault (given the lifespan of many restaurants), but do make sure you call ahead first, as some restaurants here are pretty isolated.
Chicago seems a great place to go!.......2005-01-11
A guide to restaurants, markets and bars in Chicago, written by Chicago locals and Slow Food members.
Slow Food has the principles of tradition, conviviality, sustainability, as well as an emphasis on homemade foods.
This guide is divided into three parts: Cuisines (African, British, Vegetarian, Scandinavian, Latin American etc.); Special Foods and Nightlife (Wine Bars, Coffe and Tea Houses, Brunch etc.); and Food Shops, Markets and Producers (Farmers' Markets, Fish and Seafood Markets, Ethnic and Specialty Food Markets etc.). Each description includes the types of meals found at each location, the atmosphere, address, telephone number and average cost for a meal.
There are a few black and white photographs. Most are scenic shots of Chicago, while others are photos of people creating meals at restaurants. This guide seems to be quite helpful and useful despite my not being able to actually go to Chicago and try the book out personally. Though having said that, I will have to say, it is definitely much more detailed than the Zagat books.
Try this little gem out. It is more detailed than Zagats and written by locals! The amount of entries in this book are over 500! There is sure to be some wonderful gems for you to discover on your next trip to Chicago!
Unique and informative guide book for Chicago.......2004-10-30
I have to admit that I generally do not buy guide books, but after seeing The Slow Guide to Chicago in a book store, I knew I had to buy it. It reads more like a great inside story to some really interesting spots in Chicago. They give a snail to the "best" spots - that support the local, sustainable, traditional.... ways - but they also open up a whole new world to some of the much smaller mom and pop stores that you would never know about unless a friend told you about it. A really wonderful book.

Very informative but a little too generic.......2004-08-09
I found the book easy to read with loads of great photos of TT's. The first few chapters on the description, origin, living with a TT and Grooming a TT were great. The large section on TT's in the US was irrelevant to me since I am from Australia and I was dissappointed in the last few chapters because they were very generic and packed full with advertisments for a particular companies products.
Still I think it is a good read for anyone considering obtaining a TT for the first time.
Left wanting to hear more . . ........2002-02-20
The photography in the book is great. I also liked the history on the breed. I was, however, disappointed by the minimal information in the book about the breed's temperment, personality and the pluses and minuses of the breed. I was yearning for more information about this. The second half of the book is devoted to the typical puppy information that was very generic and has been written about in almost every dog book I've read. Anne, next time give us more!!
great photographics, generics.......2000-02-11
Its a very good book for new commers also for other breeds but not for breeders. Why are not included the opinions of other breeders? It hase also commercial announcements I don¨t like that.
Great photographs, as well as terrific descriptions........1999-07-25
I have read this book because I am looking for a Tibetan Terrier. I did lots of research, and read many books, but this one was the best. I found in all the other books that they were a little generic, and didn't give good advice, or was a little out dated. I found this book very simple to read, and I read it in one day. It gives terrific advice on the do's and don'ts of the Tibetan Terrier. The pictures are terrific, but I found the information even more fantastic.

Best Resource on the Breed.......2007-05-04
Although this book is very old, it's still the best resource on the breed and the one book I turn to to get me through each stage with my pup. For example, the book accurately predicted when and where I would find my pup's first matt and how to handle it. The book is dense with information, but if you are investing in a Tibetan Terrier, you will find no better information about the breed.
Customer Reviews:
Helpful and informative........2000-07-29
When my family was looking into getting the "perfect" dog we considered the tibetan terrier. This book helped us to determine whether it was the perfect dog or not. It did help, and convinced us to get the dog.
Whether you are looking at getting a dog, or just want something to read this book is great. It also has GREAT colored photographs.

Book Description
This small but lavishly illustrated catalogue is the first in-depth study ever on silver bird-decorated spoons. Author Donald L. Fennimore, Winterthur's senior curator of metals, narrates the fascinating social, technical, and artistic tale of American silver spoons whose bowls were struck with bird images: from the dove and olive branch to the bald eagle. In the late 18th and early 19th centuries, these rare and highly collectible objects of true beauty proved to be a significant vehicle for expressing not only creativity but also a new national identity.
Fennimore's lucid and well-researched volume, which accompanies an exhibition of the same name at Winterthur, includes a comprehensive list of East Coast silversmiths who produced these charming objects between 1750 and 1830. Flights of Fancy surely will serve as a single point of reference for all future study of these uniquely American pieces.

La Jetee/Sans Soleil (Criterion Collection)
ASIN: 1878972391
Release Date: 2004-02-02 |
Book Description
Filmmaker, photographer, writer, and traveler Chris Marker has never respected the boundaries between genres. His landmark 1962 film La Jetee is made up almost entirely of stills, its one moving image as thrilling as the Lumieres' films must have been for their original audiences. Since then, Marker's films (including the features Sans Soleil, and most recently Level Five) have continued to stretch the definition of the art, merging at times with the essay, political manifesto, personal letter, art installation, even the computer game. In Immemory, Chris Marker has used the format of the CD-Rom to create a multi-layered, multimedia memoir. The reader investigates "zones" of travel, war, cinema, and poetry, navigating through photographs, film clips, music, and text, as if physically exploring Marker's memory itself. The result is a veritable 21st-century Remembrance of Things Past, an exploration of the state of memory in our digital era. With it, Marker has both invented a literary form and perfected it. System Requirements: For Macintosh computers running System 7.5 through Mac OS 9 (including the "Classic environment" of Mac OS X)
Customer Reviews:
Calm down!.......2003-09-17
I have only seen the French version, but be aware that this CD-ROM is not as "visual" as you might expect. It was made using HyperStudio in 1997, and the real content is the text. It does have an image slide show and a few clips, but most of the visuals are backgrounds for the text. It is cool, and I enjoyed navigating the terrain charted by this "cartographier le pays imaginaire." But you'll be happier if you tone down the expectations--it is not really a world to get lost in or an interactive film.
Buy this cd-rom now. find Mac later.......2003-04-26
I have not experienced this latest by Chris Marker -- but it's by Marker so how can it miss -- for 13.00+ you can't afford not to pick this puppy up -- (see review for this cd-rom in the latest bookforum spring 2003) -- buy now -- find a friend with a mac - (hopefully and G4 with a wideass monitor!)

Content Sounds Great -- Wish It Worked on a PC.......2003-04-03
Why this is being released as a Mac-only CD-ROM is not clear. Since more than 90% of the personal computers in use are Wintel (MS Windows with x86 processors) machines (used to be called "IBM Compatibles"), it seems silly to release a CD-ROM that only works on a Mac (great as they are).

Book Description
Both playful and serious, this audacious riff on ethnic and sexual identity by HawaiianHakka ChineseAmerican writer Carolyn Lei-lanilau revolves around the persona she calls Ono Ono Girl, an icon that interweaves and transcends Lucille Ball, Little Lulu, Tina Turner, and Spottie Dottie. Challenging assumptions about genre and gender, and acting out the notion that language is a function of the body, these essays are transforming soundbites of Ono Ono Girl inventing herself. Just when you thought American literature was canonized and commodified beyond saving, Carolyn Lei-lanilaus intertextual, irreverent work, Ono Ono Girls Hula, brings language and philosophy back to the table. Her book is a miracle delivery: a rebirth of poetry, Third World Spam, and love wrapped around the hybrid vigor of Hawaiian, Hakka, French, Latin, and English. Soulful, powerful, and wise.Russell Leong, editor of Amerasia Journal
A book enjoyable equally for its fun as for its profundity, Carolyn Lei-lanilaus Ono Ono Girls Hula is irresistible must reading for feminists, anthropologists, contemporary culture buffs, and anyone who wants a refreshing take on some of our more vexing current disputes. Down-to-earth and poetic, serious and hilarious at once, her unconventional voice invites the reader to understand the paradoxes of identitysexual and ethnicin new ways.Robin Lakoff, author of Talking Power
Customer Reviews:
Pseudo-Hawaiian Mask, Post-Colonialist Face.......2001-02-28
I wanted to give this book 0 stars, you know? Anyway, what got me was the character of the Native Hawaiian policeman whose only human quality was his sexual availability, and whose only character trait was his bad temper...and this made-up character was said by the author to typify Native Hawaiians! They used to call that kind of generality Racism. This book by someone who is not Native Hawaiian but uses Hawaiian language like a tourist is not what I expected and I didn't appreciate it. Thank you. --Pele Ah Chu
A loco moco brew of mongrel identity politics, more or less........1999-05-17
Ono Ono Girl's Hula ia a "loco moc" brew of mongrel identity politics, more or less, emanating as much from the grounds of cultural political struggle in contemporary Hawai'i as much as from the verbal flux of the diasporic Pacific Rim and the ethnic opportunism of California. I like it a lot, at times crazed and infuriated as I read the schizo-text of herstory; Carolyn Lau (who was a great Chinese poet in days past) is not Haunani Kay Trask and moments in the text when she aspires towards primordial ideological bullying are way off the mark. But when she lets the language flow and mix, she becomes one shameless hussy of mongrel postcolonialty, and it is worth it, dear reader, to go along for the poetic and sexual ride into the ono ono girl's blissy blessed hula.
