Stories Told Under the Sycamore Tree.......2006-06-24
What a great adventure awaits the reader when illustrated pages turn on the theme of the plants in the Bible! Each of the 52 lessons is prefaced by a relevant scripture; then follows an inspiring and factual message by author, Samuel J. Hahn. Lessons are drawn out as an object for living and the reader is blessed with a prayer connecting the themes each plant displays. Colorful and accurate illustrations of each flower, tree or shrub by Scott Patton compliment the text. This is more than an inspiring resource, it is a joyful discovery!
stories told under the sycamore tree.......2006-06-17
What an enjoyable book. The delicate illustrations enhance the stories and information. I have used this book as the basis of a program for a club meeting. You can read it all in one stretch or just take a topic at a time. Soothed by the language in the tales, you are surprised by how much you have learned. I keep this book in the guest bedroom for my friends to enjoy when they visit. As a librarian, I recognize the pleasure awaiting readers who purchase these stories.
Stories to Tell.......2006-06-15
Sam Hahn & Scott Patton have combinded to produce a valuable and inspiring book. I am making use of it in my Sunday School class and for Children's Serons.
Stories Told Under the Sycamore Tree: Lessons from Bible Plants.......2006-06-06
This interesting book about plants and trees mentioned in the Bible could provide
a whole unit of study for a group of young people or adults. It includes little known
facts and uses for so many fruits, flowers, and trees. It is so informational! I enjoyed the book very much.
Stories Told Under The Sycamore Tree.......2006-05-22
A great educational devotional! Even better than the first!!

Snobby and without imagination.......2007-07-17
Caravaggio's Conversion of St. Paul, in the church of Santa Maria Del Popolo, is a deathless masterpiece. People of all ages, from all countries of the world, stand in front of it in silent awe. Some of them weep. This is what the Michelin guide has to say about this painting: "The effect of the divine light illuminating St. Paul on the road to Damascus should have been sublime but it falls first of all on the hourse, which is out of proportion, before touching the foreshadowed figure of the saint." Oh, excuse me, Michelin man, it's a shame you weren't around in the 17th century so you could give Caravaggion lessons in proportion! Then there's the column of Marcus Aurelius, which as been transfixing travelers to Rome for nigh on two thousand years now: "The overall appearance is spoiled by the lack of entasis two-thirds of the way up the shaft, which would have avoided the impression of concavity." Spoiled! And here I was, along with maybe a hundred million people before me, thinking the spiraling reliefs of victory and disaster were something pretty damn special and reasonably unspoiled to see. And please forgive me for not having any idea what the heck "entasis" means. The star rating system of this guide will only lead you to the places you already knew you should go and see--the guide gives one or no stars to places that are not only magnificent, but which will be, even on a July afternoon, cool, silent and empty of the multitudes. The Rough Guide to Rome is a much better book. Or just follow your nose, your eyes and your heart--in the Eternal City, they can't steer you wrong.
Absolutely essential.......2006-10-25
I've browsed and borrowed several guidebooks, and the ones I relied on for taking with me and walking around with (as opposed to pre-trip research) were Fodor's, and Michelin's Green Guide for Rome. The latter has no restaurant or hotel information, but excellent historical and cultural notes--more than some people want, perhaps. My only criticism of it is that the index is not good: some listings are under the Latin or Italian names, (many churches are found under the listing "chiesa" for example),some are under the English translation names, and some important topics or sites are not actually listed in the index at all, but they do appear in the book. Topics are well-organized into walking itineraries.
Well researched and organized, compact size that travels well.......2006-06-07
I have used the Michelin Green Guides on many trips to Italy. They have always provided accurate information in an easy to use format. I particularly like that they are small enough to pack in a suit easily. This might not sound like much to you. But I am a one carry-on suitcase kind of girl, so I don't have much room to spare for lots of travel guides. I always have at least one Michelin Green Guide in my suitcase for each new adventure.
The writers do a nice job of provided walking directions through Rome to maximize your sightseeing opportunities. I love to walk around Rome. It is such a beautiful city that can only be truly appreciated up close. Just be sure to wear comfortable shoes. The street are very uneven and unless you have gel inserts in your hard soles shoes you feet might give out before you do. I have been known to walk 10 miles a day in Rome without trying to. It is very easy to get carried away and just want to see more.
Be sure to check out a few of the outdoor markets that are outlined in the book. These are so much fun. I like them almost as much as the museums.
The floorplans of the museums that are provided are very useful and I would recommend copying those before you leave to have with you if you don't plan to take the book.
One overlooked sight in Rome that I love is the Baths of Caracalla. If you are there in summer check to see if they are having the outdoor concerts at night, they are worth attending. Even without the concerts the scope of the Baths is worth seeing. It is fascinating what the Romans were able to accomplish in AD 212.
I would highly recommend the Michelin Green Guide to Rome to anyone that is planning a trip to Rome, be it their first trip or their tenth.
Book Description
While spending a few days in the Eternal City, you may want to visit some its numerous sights and monuments, to explore the locations and scenes captured in the classic film "La Dolce Vita" to plunge into the bustle of an open-air market or to cross the Tiber to Trastevere in search of a typical trattoria. THE GREEN GUIDE, the perfect travel companion: a discerning and up-to-date source of information. Practical and comprehensive, it offers suggestions on what to see and what to do, background on history and cultural heritage. Ideal guides for the independent tourist, THE GREEN GUIDE explores destinations both near and far. Sights are rated - 3 stars "worth a journey", 2 stars "worth a detour" and 1 star "interesting". Maps and itineraries make planning easy, whether visiting the highlights or venturing off the beaten track. Travel with THE GREEN GUIDE for an exciting and memorable experience.
Customer Reviews:
A great guide to the historical/cultural sights.......2004-03-18
I took this book on a recent 8-day trip to Rome. It is an outstanding guide to the historical/cultural sights, probably the best in print if you're limiting yourself to one.
The city is divided into about 15 regions. For each, the book lays out a walking tour complete with an explicit map. Quite a bit of very helpful info is provided for each sight.
If you have a lot less than 8 days, the book provides a rating of 1 to 3 stars for each sight, so you can make a bee-line to the 3 star sights and skip the walking tours.
The book is weak on "the contemporary scene", bus routes, shopping, restaurants, and hotels. The focus is definitely on the cultural and historical sights. I recommend you also get a copy of Fodors or Frommers and xerox the chapters on these important practicalities. Great dining experiences can add a lot to the trip; Rome has plenty of mediocre tourist traps.
Another book similar in scope and emphasis is "Blue Guide Rome" by Alta Macadam. It's also excellent. This author typically says a little more about each sight than does Michelin, but the city is divided into about 30 walking tours instead of 15 and no map is provided for the individual walks. If you don't mind carrying a small library, and I don't, take this along too and whip it out at the major sights to get an insightful second opinion.
A big issue in sightseeing Ancient Rome is that there is usually relatively little left to look at, as the sites were used as quarries for more than a thousand years. Neither this Michelin Guide nor the Blue Guide provides sketches of reconstructions of the Ancient sites, and hence your imagination doesn't have much to go on. To rectify this, I recommend whipping out the "Oxford Archeological Guide to Rome" by Amanda Claridge, probably the best guide in English on Ancient Rome, but this book barely mentions any site newer than 500 AD and is not suitable as a general guide.
Save your money and don't buy this horrible guide.......2002-05-29
I bought this book but didn't have time to read it until I was on the plane -- my mistake in buying it in the first place -- there are so many other great guides that do such a better job than this ridiculous guide -- the maps are horrible, the entire book is superficial in it's descriptions and the restaurants it recommends were all recommended by other guides -- as if they had plagarized the lists of places to go. Save your money!
Michelin Green Guide Rome a Must Have!.......2000-06-14
After living overseas for 6 years I have traveled far and wide. I have purchased several other guide book brands (Fodors, Eyewitness, Knopf), and while they have pretty pictures, they lack substance. If you are visiting Rome and want to know the history and small details The Green Guide is an absolute must. It's divided into logical catagories (take the time to acquaint yourself with the set-up of the book - you'll be glad you did) that are alphabetically listed. Sights are rated one, two and three stars and I've found that most ratings are fairly accurate. There are small, detailed maps in each section. You can also purchase a very detailed map book of Rome by Michelin - it's wonderful!
The book is lighter than most of the current popular travel guides and chock full of great information. Michelin is always the guide I reach for once I'm disgusted with any other guide book - no matter where I'm visiting!
Bon Voyage!

The thinking person's guide..........1999-12-03
A fantastic guide to the principal attractions of this immense city. The suggested itineraries and maps are very useful, though their estimated lengths are very generous. All listed attractions have notes on historical relevance, architecture, notable sculpture etc. All very useful and informative. Due to the nature of tourist sites, the opening hours and admission prices are often inaccurate, but overall one of the most useful guides to the city.

Very good resource of background information about the sites. Some information about history and art (you might want a dedicated history book if you are really serious about it). Provides a welcomed change from all the guides spending more time descibing restourants instead of museums

Book Description
From the Old West legend of the weathered cowboy and his trusty horse to the urbane athleticism of the hunter and jumper, from the majestic mountains of Montana to the volcanic terrain of Iceland, horses are an integral part of everyday life for many people around the world. In these beautiful sepia-toned photographs, Jim Dratfield captures the spirit, strength, and nobility of horses.
Paired with quotations that include everyone from James Thurber to Amelia Earhart, Henrik Ibsen to Lauren Bacall, and ranging from the inspirational to the absolutely hilarious,
The Quotable Equine celebrates these magnificent animals. Jim Dratfield has traveled the world to capture in both candid and portrait photography the essence of the equine, in the most stunning settings, from dancing Andalusians in Spain to workhorses in Mongolia.
Whether it's a child obstinately pulling her donkey, a horse running free in the wild, or an intense moment at an equestrian competition, the images in this book are charming, poignant, gorgeous, and sometimes amusing.
The Quotable Equine pays homage to the timeless elegance of horses, to the many disciplines and sports built around them, and to all the people who love them.

Ignore the prior review.......2006-06-20
And make up your own mind. The review itself was certainly "dissapointing" (sic).
A nice enough book of its kind.
Very Dissapointing..........2006-02-06
If you are a horselover seeking a collection of inspirational horse quotes, then don't bother looking in here.
This is a very slim book, (9-1/2" x 7-3/4", 112 pages) with accompanying text that has absolutely nothing to do with horses!
We get perhaps one quote that is directly related to horses, and that is the frontcover photo (which is perhaps the nicest photo in the entire book), repeated on pages 8-9 with the quote: " A lovely horse is always an experience... It is an emotional experience of the kind that is spoiled by words." (Beryl Markham)
Indeed.
The rest of the book is filled with rather bland and uninspiring sepia photos: a blond haired girl leaning against a blanketed horse, a little girl sitting on a pony chained to a merry-go-round (the pony wearning a muzzle!), a group photo of Mongolian riders sitting on some very decrepit looking horses, a very unflattering image of a horse yawning, mouth agape, tongue sticking out..and, well.. ho-hum...
I could perhaps pardon the uninspiring sepia photographs in this book, EXCEPT; the accompanying quotes are SO off-target, and SO non-horse related, that it left me wondering: what on earth was the author thinking??
Here we have quotes from Yves St. Laurent "Fashions fade; style is eternal" (shown next to a dressage rider). Yes - Yves St. Laurent, a haute couture fashionista in no way connected to horses. But wait, there's more of these little gems: "Life is uncertain. Eat dessert first" (Ernestine Ulmer); a photo of a jockey on horseback: "Only those who dare to fail greatly can ever achieve greatly" (Robert F. Kennedy); a photo of a carriage marathon driver: "The reputation of power is power" (Thomas Hobbes); a pregnant woman and her horse: "At the touch of love, everyone becomes a poet" (Plato). Ho-hum *yawn*
Hello? What am I missing here? Is this a book about humans or horses? Or is the author trying to impress us with his literary scope by including quotes from Plato and Hobbes alongside a prima donna fashionista?
How pretentious and overblown can you get. I see very little relevance here, not to mention uninspiring. This one's going straight into the garage sale bin.
There is another book titled "The Quoteable Horse Lover" which seems to offer the hippophile a much better selection of snippets and anecdotes of horse-related quotes. I have not seen this book yet, but I do have one on order. It will be interesting to compare the two.

Postcards of the Big Apple.......2001-09-09
I was disappointed by this book. The three hundred pre-1940 postcards should have made the buildings of Big Apple come alive, instead so many of the cards are shown too large and this emphasizes the flaws in the original printing of these mass produced postcards. However you could use this book as a taster for the much more interesting 'American Architecture: a vintage postcard collection' by Luc Van Malderen. This has over six hundred postcards with 188 devoted to New York city, all beautifully printed with detailed captions about each building.
Both books show images of a city that must have been awe-inspiring to the people who bought these postcards and mailed them to the folks back home.
An outstanding collection of 300 images of New York.......2001-03-02
Not Only Buildings New York is an outstanding collection of 300 images of New York assembled from the postcard collection by architect Italo Rota. These hand-painted cards depicted New York City's major attractions, and Not Only Buildings New York offers the outstanding cards in all their glory in a fine keepsake edition any New York fan will relish.

Book Description
Widely regarded as the best of Hamlin Garland’s novels, Rose of Dutcher’s Coolly tells the story of a country girl of precocious ability who is raised by her widower father on a small Wisconsin farm. She wants to be a poet and eventually attends the university, where her talent is encouraged. A carefully crafted defense of the New Woman, the first generation of women to achieve economic and social independence, Rose of Dutcher’s Coolly deals with issues that are still with us—the nature of femininity, the problem of reconciling career and family, the meaning of “love,” and the need for equal opportunity. Above all, it records a nineteenth-century man’s vision of a world that still eludes us, one in which men and women are equal partners. This edition reprints the text of the 1895 printing and includes an introduction that places the novel in the historical context of the early feminist movement.

Customer Reviews:
Lackluster.......1999-10-03
Although there are some interesting details in the book, it failed to hold my interest, as I thought the author got a little too thorough in her description of what took place in Lyon.
What I'll grant her is that, toward the end, when Barbie is in Bolivia, the story gets interesting. It gets even better when he is extradited to France, where justice catches up with him.
