Good Text - and professional reference.......2007-08-10
This is a classic from the McGraw - Hill Forestry Series. I first used this back in the 60's as a forestry student. The changes are all for the best.
I would strongly recommend this to the student of dendrology in the northeast. It's one of the few texts which you will use throughout your career.

The Lobster Coast : Rebels, Rusticators, and the Struggle for a Forgotten Frontier
ASIN: 0792238710
Release Date: 2005-06-01 |
Book Description
Novelist and biographer Geoffrey Wolff has spent many summers in Maine—sailing its coastal waters, climbing its rocky peaks, and communing with its natives. Now, with the voice of a passionate insider, he brings readers into the heart of this striking region and explains what makes it unique. Starting with a gripping tale about being lost offshore in the fog with inadequate navigational aids, Wolff goes on to describe the coast’s geological history and discovery by Europeans. He then turns a keen eye towards Mainers, their mores and peculiarities, and to the summer rusticators who for generations have invaded the stunning waterfronts. A section on boat building celebrates the extraordinary rescue of Maine’s foremost craft; another on lobsters tells the rich story of the custom, taste, commerce, environmental conflict, and scientific mystery surrounding these critical crustaceans. Here is a true feast—travel literature at its best.

A memoir from a man who grew up poor in the Five Island section of Georgetown, ME during the great depression. He went on to serve in the Navy during World War Two.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent.......2006-12-26
The book was a birthday gift from my daughter....and excellent choice! I couldn't put it down! A really good read. It's an great first book...I hope there will be more from Mr. Hanna.
Excellant read!!.......2006-11-07
For a first book, this one is excellant in my opinion. It made me think of "Angela's Ashes" as I read the story of growing up in poverty on the Maine coast during the depression. I was awake til the wee hours, couldn't put it down.
Excerpt from Shoutin' into the Fog .......2006-10-13
I was three when we five Hannas finally moved into the bungalow in 1929. All five of us lived in one large room. Bright-orange sheathing paper covered the wall studs and ceiling joists. More paper partitioned off a corner of
the bungalow where my father and mother slept. The children shared the open space with the kitchen and the living room.
Mary was born a year later in 1930. We still didn't have our front steps. We did have a screen door, nailed shut to keep little Mary from taking a six-foot headfirst tumble. On stifling summer evenings the front door was opened to let in the Sheepscot Bay breezes, but mostly we got outhouse fragrances. Irving and I loved to sit by the door on those evenings to listen to the peeper chorus, and watch the fat gray spiders climb down their webs under the eaves to wait for the swarms of mosquitoes that rose up from the swamp and whined around our door. The mosquitoes were quite adept at finding the pencil holes Irving had poked through the screen. We had the
welts to prove it.
Our one-room home arrangement lasted until the day I noticed how Cora was built different from me. When I asked my father how come she had a couple of parts missing, he allowed it was about time the girls had a room of their own.
Right away he sat down at the kitchen table and went to work on the five-room floor plan he¹d had to settle for. On the south side, there would be two thirteen-by-twelve rooms, the kitchen and the living room. Then he laid out three bedrooms on the north side facing Schoolhouse Road: a twelve-by-ten master bedroom and two twelve-by-eights. We children would get the small rooms; Irving and I in the middle and the two girls on the end.
The orange sheathing paper came down as he framed out the rooms. It hadn't been much use anyway, mainly because my father hadn't taken into account that children have sharp elbows suitable for poking holes. Strips of one-inch board nailed together made the studding. The National Biscuit Company provided the wallboard. They shipped their cookies and crackers to P. B. Savage's General Store, where my Grandpa Rowe worked (and which, under a different name, was started by his ancestors and which he had once owned himself), in heavy, corrugated, brown cardboard cartons. Percy Savage was happy to part with the empties.
My father carted the cardboard home and our National Biscuit rooms took shape. He tacked the cardboard to the studs and sealed the seams with gummed paper. Somehow he came by an old door, painted white, for his bedroom. My mother hung heavy curtains made of cretonne in the doorways of our rooms. The door and the flowery drapes brightened the house, but the cardboard walls were drab, even to my young eyes. Not even the frayed divan or the faded carpet (castoffs from a Malden Island cottage), the picture of my mother's late mother on one wall, or my mother's rocking chair could add much to it. But it was just for the time being, my father promised could afford something more solid.
The cardboard was still in place the day he died.
Great Memoirs.......2006-09-14
It seems to me that this book is about survival. It's about a young man who overcomes extreme poverty to find his way in life and to find a measure of success. And it is a book of heartwarming tales, sometimes funny and sometimes sad, of a young boy growing up during the Great Depression. I couldn't put it down.

Maine is not just for vacation any more!.......2007-01-09
This compiliation of writings from Maine proves that Maine is not ust Vacationland. It is a place of culture and thought. The writers represented herein are articulate beyond just their words on the page(s). They lend great insight into what Maine is like as veiwed through the literary lens. Lignell and Wilson edit brilliantly, having chosen wisely a great swath of literary talent from the "home shore." One can only await with eagerness another pass along Route 1 or into the woods of the state to find who else is writing, and what else there is to learn from their words. Brava.

Gregory H. Nobles pulls together the work of many recent historians of the American West in this sensitive and synthesizing study of frontier history in North America. Using the frontier as both a spatial and phenomenological metaphor for the experience of Western expansion, Nobles considers the historical facts of frontier encounters and the frontier as cultural interchange between diverse people. Nobles's narrative begins and ends with the tragic story of the Pequots, from Captain John Mason's cowardly raid on a Pequot camp in 1637 that left more than 300 sleeping Pequots dead to Donald Trump's 1990s lawsuit attempting to deprive the tribe of their gambling license. In the pages of American Frontiers readers will also find details of the French and Indian War, Iroquois involvement in the American Revolution, the California gold rush, Texas independence, the tragedy of Wounded Knee, the resistance of Sitting Bull, and the Ghost Dance movement.
Nobles's book is a good starting point for readers interested in the American West. His bibliographic essay alone, which provides a generous and thorough account of literature on the subject, makes this a useful reference even for accomplished students of the frontier.
Book Description
Gregory Nobles shows how American leaders, beginning with Washington and Jefferson, pursued a policy of national expansion and development that enabled the United States to become the dominant power on the North American continent. Within this broad framework, he explores the settlers' diverse and complex interactions with Indians as enemies, allies, and trading partners. The result is a sensitive, perceptive account of the patterns of contact and conquest on America's frontiers over the course of four centuries.

Product Description
Lyrically, eloquently and compassionately, ANIMAL ELDERS: Caring About Our Aging Animal Companions discusses the various challenges as well as gifts associated with growing old. Observing that the older members of both animal and human societies have traditionally been regarded with respect and esteem and viewed as teachers, counselors and guides, today's society values youth and tends to dismiss, discard or disregard both its human and animal elders. To value, appreciate and care for our elders to view them as role models and mirrors of the experiences we ourselves will ultimately face can be of great benefit to us.. ANIMAL ELDERS asks us to examine the nature of human and animal life and to acknowledge our bonds with one another. It encourages us to explore the mysteries of life, to appreciate and honor our human and animal elders, and, above all, to love and respect one another, all living beings, and the extraordinary planet upon which we live.

On the day of the passing of Joe Rosenthal .......2006-08-22
I am writing this review on the day Joe Rosenthal died. Joe Rosenthal was the photographer who took one of the most famous photos of all time, the picture of the Marines raising the flag on Mt. Suribachi in the Pacific island of Iwo Jima where one of the war's key and most bloodly battles was fought in 1945. Afterwards there was a controvery and accusations that he had staged this. This present book provides overwhelming evidence of the falsity of the claim. It also provides a detailed recounting of the story of the battle of Iwo Jima.
Rosenthal who was by all accounts a modest man said , once 'What difference does it make who took the photograph? I took it. But what is important is that the Marines took Iwo Jima.' Six thousand Americans lost their lives in that battle.
In this book Tedd Thomey who was a Marine wounded in the battle of Iwo Jima, tells the story of the two ' raisings of the flag' He also tells of the military photographer William Genaust whose photographs and words corroborated Rosenthal's claim that the photo was not staged.
The photo itself is of course a legenday one. I remember seeing it as a child and being struck by it without really knowing why. The effort, the leaning forward of the Marines, the struggle, the aspiration, the flag blowing in the wind, all seemed to express together a picture of American patriotic dedication and greatness, and something too about the human spirit in fighting for what it really believes in.
Rosenthal, again , was a modest man, and according to Thomey, a great patriot. In an instant he gave America a picture of one of its finest moments, and truest meanings.
Magnificent and utterly original.......1999-12-24
In the interests of full disclosure I must confess that Tedd Thomey is an old pal. But never mind about that. Tedd would be the first to agree that I must not allow sentiment to compromise my opinions. So let me be brutally honest here: Immortal Images is a brilliant and unique and moving book, the capstone to the author's long and colorful career. Uncovering the--sometimes startling, always intriguing--hidden history behind the iconic photos of the flag-raising at the battle of Iwo Jima, Thomey is part reporter, part private eye, part crusader and part soldier with the insider's viewpoint only a veteran of battle could have brought to the page. How wonderful to find that at this late date, fifty-plus years after the events in question took place, great new books on WWII are still being created by men who actually experienced and survived and won that long-ago conflict. Read it. Know what it was like. This is history you can taste brought to you by a man who was there.
In "Immortal Images," the truth prevails........1999-04-09
A superbly written book which refutes the minsinformation (both intentional and untentional) surrounding the two flag raisings atop Suribachi Yama on Iwo Jima. The facts are so well proven and documented, the reader will be left with no doubt as to the true course of events.
The author vividly recounts the negative effects these fallacious facts wrought on the men and families of those participating in this historic event.
Although Tedd Thomey was wounded and evacuated on D Day, February 19, 1945, he successfuly recreated much of the 36 day battle. This reader, also, a member of the First Battalion, 28th Marines, found himself completely spellbound as Thomey's narration traveled from the foot of Suribachi north to Hill 362A, over Nishi Ridge into the Badlands, and finally to Bloody Gorge.
Only a true journalist with a passion for the truth could have written this book.
Excellent, well-written, sensitive and factual documentary........1998-10-20
If you have ever wondered who Joe Rosenthal was, read this book. If you wish to know about the photographers who took the images of the Flag Raisings on Iwo Jima, then read this book. If you have ever wondered about what is the true story of the Iwo Jima Flag Raisings by the US Marines on Mount Suribachi, read this book. If you have ever wanted to learn about why there could have been so much controversy surrounding the Iwo Jima Flag Raisings in February, 1945, read this book. Tedd Thomey has put an exhorbitant amount of research and details, some never before known, in the story of two photographers, who by chance, happened to be in the same place at the same time, capturing one of the most famous and widely reproduced images of all time. The book covers a wide range of stories on the people, places, graphic battlefield portrayals surrounding the Joe Rosenthal, Lou Lowery photographs and Bill Genaust 16mm filming of the event. I highly recommend this book for any World War II, Marine Corp, Photojournalism or history lover. Great human drama.
