I just borrowed this book from the library because I was a little scared away by the high price. Now I know that I have to buy it. This is a fantastic book. I'm planning to start a small farm and have been reading about permaculture for a couple of years. If you live in a temperate climate, this is the best book on the subject. It is filled with diagrams and interesting details about how to establish a successful system. There is hardly anything that the book doesn't touch on. If you are a serious home gardener or you are looking to create a more sustainable farm, this book will be a well used resource.
Great textbook on Permaculture.......2006-05-25
I've only had a chance to glance through this and read
snippets, but I'm very impressed. A lot of information well
organized; it's like a textbook for a college level
Permaculture course. Seems comparable to, but easier to
understand and apply, than Mollison's Permaculture Design
Manual. I'm in the PNW US but I think this book will be very
useful here. Only compliant is the climate, etc maps of
britian rather than the US :-)

an exceptionally practical guide to travel in bali and lombok. on a recent month holiday to bali, i used the book from cover to cover. the information is accurate and the maps came in very useful whilst negotiating the other road users in my rented jeep. i will certainly buy a roughguides for my next trip and have peace of mind that what is written is correct.

My first book on meditative practices...pretty good introduction!.......2006-03-28
Towards the late 80's, I began to take up a personal interest in meditation.
The first book that came into my hands was this paperback book. As far as I am concerned, it gave me a pretty good introduction to the art & practice of meditation. It was packed with useful anecdotes. I even participated in a meditation retreat which stretched over three & a half days.
I recalled vividly that, as soon as I had finished the session on a Sunday evening, I took a taxi to the airport, flew to Stockholm, Sweden, to attend a board meeting on Monday morning, flew back to Singapore on Monday night, & went back to the office on Wednesday morning. Amazingly, I was able to perform my professional duties without the attendant effects of jet lag because I had put what I had learned experientially from the meditation retreat to work.
In the ensuing years, this book had, in many ways, led me to discover a lot of other good books of similar genre, which included 'Creative Visualisation' by Shakti Gawain, 'Moon Over Water: The Path of Meditation' by Jessica MacBeth, & 'Sun Over Mountain: A Course in Creative Imagination' by Jessica MacBeth.

If you can get your hands on this book I strongly recommend it. The author goes into many different areas of mind exploration including healing yourself and others with your mind. All aspects of your life can be improved by "going within." This is a fantastic book that should be in print. This book has nothing in common whatsoever with the Celestine Prophecies which I did not care for.
Leaves something behind!.......2000-04-20
Power of alpha-thinking, what is that? That is why I read the book and also because it didnt seem that big. It is written in a very nice and easy language and it keeps you interrested most of the time. But it leaves something behind, a new idea and makes you think in general about your unexploited potencials. I have after I read the book done a litle bit of the practices described in the book and yes I feel differences, I really do, though not at all as dramatic as the book describes. Very Informative.......1998-08-24
If you liked the Celestine Prophecy, then you will enjoy this book. It dives more into the science behind altered states of awareness with such things as biofeedback, but is not written like a technical manual or text book. I had no problem keeping my interest peaked througout. I chuckled to myself when I found that the author seemed intent on making the reader aware that he always found himself next to the prettiest woman in the room on several occasions. Regardless, it was very informative and an easy read.

here is a real history in the art of decoy carvings.one can pick it up and see just how far we have advance in the art of carving decoys.one has the ability to see the different stiles, and ways the artist has come to copy feathered friends.being a carver myself, it was very enjoyable reading.very informative.

Invaluable resource for common & unique fruits.......2004-10-03
Thanks to this wonderful book, we have added many unusual fruits to our orchard and discovered some amazing mail order suppliers. Before we purchase any plants, we always refer to "THE BOOK" to make sure that the tree is one we really want and that it will thrive in the harsh Maine climate. I would recommend it to anybody wanting to successfully plant fruits, berries or nuts.
Very useful, the only one of it's kind..........2003-04-14
For the fruit nut, this reference is indispensible. When ordering specific varieties, we use it to source stock from nurseries. When searching for trees with certain characteristics, we peruse the descriptions, hunting for certain words (in the pear section, "fireblight-resistant", in the apricot section, "excellent flavor", etc.).
Few complaints: not revised often enough to list new varieties as they come on the market. For example, 'Goldrush' apple is not listed. Descriptions are very brief, probably due to space limitations. Descriptions are also generally a summary of the nursery catalog's text, and therefore not as useful as they could be.
In general, a very fun reference to keep on the shelf.
Excellent Sourcebook for Fruit and Nut Varieties.......2002-11-02
In the third edition of this excellent reference, the Seed Savers Exchange has provided a very useful tool for nurseries and gardeners to locate sources of heirloom fruit, nut and berry varieties. But it is much more than just a sourcebook, as there are brief descriptions of each fruit variety and indications of how rare or threatened each variety is based on the number of sources. Nursery operators and fruit gene bank managers will find this book to be indespensible!

This book opens up three new topics in modern Chinese literary history: the intimate lives of Lu Xun and Xu Guangping as a couple; real and imagined love-letters in modern Chinese literature; and concepts of privacy in China. The scandalous affair between modern China's greatest writer and his former student is revealed in their letters to each other between 1925 and 1929. Publication of the letters in a heavily edited version in 1933 was intended partly to profit from a current trend for literary couples to publish their private letters, but another reason was to assert control over their love story, taking it away from the gossip-mongers. The biographies in Part I, based on the unedited letters, reveal such hitherto neglected information as Xu Guangping's early tendencies towards lesbianism; her gender reversal games and Lu Xun's willing participation in them; Xu Guangping's two early attempts at suicide; and Lu Xun's attempts to play down Xu Guangping's political activism and to impress readers with his own militancy. Part II shows how Lu Xun chose to publish their edited letters in the context of current Chinese epistolary fiction and love-letters published by their authors. Part III provides unique evidence on the nature of privacy in modern China through a comparison between the unedited and edited correspondence. Textual evidence shows their intimate secrets about their affairs, their bodies, and their domestic lives; their fear of gossip; their longing for a secluded life together; and their ambivalent attitudes towards the traditional conflict between public service and private or selfish interests. Although it has sometimes been claimed that Chinese culture lacks a sense of privacy, this study reveals the contents, functions, and values of privacy in the early twentieth century.
