What I like most about Zagat Surveys is the fact that, although Zagat works with travel agents to get information about the properties that are listed, the actual raters are not publicitists or travel agents. They are, in fact, people who have stayed at the resorts or hotels being rated, people who have stayed there, eaten there, used the facilities such as pools and spas, and who have experienced the hotels' service, both good, bad, and indifferent, and have no vested interest in reporting what they like or dislike.

Propertiy ratings cover the following categories: Rooms, Service, Dining, and Public Space. Costs given are the high season rack rates for standard double rooms. Since the ratings are averages of a great number of responses, individual biases probably don't affect them very much.

Properties are listed by country, city within the country, where applicable, and then in alphabetical order.

For convenience, there are a great number of cross references such as: Golf, Hiking, Historical Interest, Pet-Friendly, etc., and even by availability of Fireplaces.

Comments are those of people who have stayed in the properties, and range from raves to "rants."

This book is a portfolio collecting the work of thirty one digital artists. There are cover to cover illustrations created for advertising, graphic design, and the web. The brief commentary that accompanies the images is interesting and sometimes illuminating. The various graphic design programs that were used for each illustration or project are also listed. Although, the book is aimed toward graphic designers or fine artists expanding into new media, it is a wonderful source of inspiration for web designers. Keep in mind that it is not at all technically useful. There are no instructions or descriptions on how to create the kinds of images in this book. The work is meant simply to be admired and appreciated. It is beautifully designed with a clever layout and typography. The sharp clear images are well presented in gorgeous full color, and the book has a superior binding.

Pixel Perfect is sectioned into categories for advertising, editorial, exploratory, web design, and a section for books, calendars, and music media. The exploratory section is for experimental and personal work, fine arts, and self promotion. I would happily purchase an entire book on the artists presented in this section. The editorial selection contains ideas for brochures, font creation, greeting cards, and magazine covers. The web design section is small and features the work of such cutting edge designers as Mark Allen, Todd Purgason, and Gustavo Machado. Jonothan Caponi, Katherine Streeter, Alessandro Bavari, Ilya Rozhdestvensky, and Michael Morganstern are among the many illustrators featured throughout the book. This is the quintessential canary handbook; easy to read and understand, filled with excellent photos and advice, with a good section on genetics if you should choose to breed these marvelous little birds. Vriends is a wonderful writer, well-organized on all the chapters in the aspects of canary breeding; his love of the birds comes through on every page. I have raised canaries for several years, and recommend this book to every person who has ever procured a bird from me---in fact, if they have not had a canary before, I always tell them to buy THIS book first, read it and THEN call me back. It is an invaluable resource tool.

Having been involved in care of all sorts of animals for over 40 years and habitually buying books about each, I can say without reservation that this book is the best value for the dollar that I have ever purchased. Matthew Vriends is an internationally recognized expert on the species and he has provided us with an extraordinary handbook. The information, illustrations and photographs exceed anything I have ever purchased in a paperback edition of an animal care book.

Very clear. Covers feeding, housing, breeding, and genetics,as well as common diseases and household medicines that can be used to treat various conditions to which canaries are susceptible. However, an owner who does not want to breed might grow tired of the focus on breeding. Also, owners with canaries who were not handfed as babies may assume there is something wrong with their bird because the book discusses relatively tame handfed canaries and neglacts state that their tameness and willingness to be handled is not true of birds who were not hand fed. So be aware that if your bird does not like to be handled, this is normal. In fact, a non hand fed canary who does not struggle when caught may be ill. One final note: Information and medicating are fine, but misdiagnosis can occur,so it is good to also be have the name of a vet.

Dr. Vriends' book is a comprehensive guide to keeping canaries. He is an expert on aviculture who has published many books on its various aspects. The present book covers canaries of type, color, and song varieties and is richly illustrated with photographs and drawings which bring the readable text to life. Lutyens houses come alive.......2007-03-27

Although this book was published in 2000, I was surprised to find no customer had yet reviewed it. It is a little different from other books on the work of Sir Edwin Lutyens.
First of all, most of the photographs are in color, bringing the subjects to life in a way that was not possible in previous books, many of them relying largely on old photographs from Country Life magazine. Thus we get a much more real feeling of those classic Lutyen houses, nestling into their incredible English gardens (largely designed by Gertrude Jekyll) and see how the design is carried on through to the interiors. All the favorite Lutyens houses are there - Goddards, Orchards, Little Thakeham, Munstead Wood, Deanery Garden, Marsh Court and more.
Another difference in this book is that it deals not only with the architecture but also with the design of the interiors, the architectural fixtures and accessories and the furniture, which in themselves are amazing - they bow to tradition, yet look to the future - and many have been borrowed by more than one modern designer.
This book is well worth consideration.

This is THE best beginner book on photography I've yet seen! Although written in the pre-digital era, the basics have not changed. Accompanied with full-color photos, George Schaub describes in clear and concise prose the basics regarding light & F-stops, aperture & shutter speed, exposure overides, bracketing, depth-of-field, flash photography etc.

HIGHLY recommended for the beginning film or digital photographer!

This is a great book for basic explanations and techniques. It provides a concise, good working knowledge of camera functions, the basics of composition, exposure, low light exposures and flash photography. I have been around cameras and photography for over 35 years, so some of it was redundant to me, but if I were still a beginner, I would think this an excellent guide to start my learning. As someone else mentioned, each point has a photograph to illustrate it, to reinforce the learning. This book would be on my "highly recommended" list for all photography novices!

I consider myself an advanced beginner, and own several books on photography. This, however, is the one I turn to time and again for explanations and techniques. It is concise but more than adequate for a good working knowledge of modern camera functions, composition, exposure, exposure compensation, etc. With help for special circumstances such as existing light, night exposures, pushing film, and flash photography, it is an excellent and beautifully visual guide to beginning photography. Each point has a photograph to illustrate it. Highly recommended. Hope he writes another for more experienced shooters!

The right beginning point.......1998-12-10

I would consider this book as right starting point for any beginner who wants to take good photographs. The focus of the book is on making the reader comfortable in the world of photography. Starting from meaning of many technical terms, this book goes into illustrating important techniques of taking good photographs. The hundred around example photographs (taken by George and his wife) in the book cover the different situations that a start-up photographer would face and look for some guidelines. I should congratulate the writer on not going into most difficult techniques of photography as the book is meant for beginners. One thing I expected from this book and did not get was a step-by-step guideline about how a beginner should try to expertise different skills the writer has illustrated.

General Photography book, not much else.......2000-01-28

I think the book's title is a bit misleading in that the handbook really doesn't tell you how to get the most out of your camera. I bought the book hoping to learn something new, but the focus is more about general concepts, such as how to buy a camera, basic shooting techniques, etc. I read the book in a day because I already knew what was in the book -- I gave this three stars because it's a good book for a beginner, but not for intermediate and above users.
