I have already written reviews on other National Geographic Traveler Guides on Ireland ( Dec 4,05 ), San Francisco ( Jan 3,06), Interstates Crossing America (Feb 5,06 ),and California (Aug 23,06 ). I have given many reasons why these are excellent guides ;and after looking through the miriad of guides on the bookshelves, you won't be sorry if you choose National Geographic. They are of the highest quality and construction and make a great memory of your visits and on top of that the design and format is consistant. What you have to realize is that they are excellent as a guide to the history and places to visit. This is where Nat Geo shines over the others. This guide would also be a teriffic value to those who live locally or even as a reference of the areas and places for whatever reasons. In reading or following news ,it will be turning to them often. With other travel guides, one often discard after the trip , as they are generally mainly heavy on
Accomodation,Restauraunt and other information that quickly becomes outdated, printed on cheap paper and with minimal information and pictures, maps, drawings and information.
National Geographic are hard to beat in what they do.They are showing it again in Travel Guides.

This book has the National Geographic glossy quality and lot of great information! We picked this up for our planned trip to DC. I will update this review when we take the trip. Well, we did the trip and we liked the pictures and information but I found the DK book better for current information and had additional information that this book did not have ....but it was still a good book to get a preview with.

5 out of 5 stars Great Guide for Touring the Sights.......2005-08-07

This is a great guide to the sights and museums of Washington DC. The maps and descriptions of the sights and museums are excellent. The metro map on the back cover is very handy, and the detailed maps of the sections of the city are useful and easy to read. This is not a guide for hotels and dining, although some coverage is given.

                    Book Description

From a Victorian Garden is the first gardening book of its kind—a remarkable historical record and the point of departure for modern gardeners replicating the charms of a traditional turn-of-the-century garden for their own delight. Using period photographs and new full color photography together with material from journals and letters, this book remembers the magnificent Victorian garden of the Point Ellice House created more than a century ago by the O'Reilly family. It is here that Judge Peter O'Reilly and his wife Caroline and daughter Kathleen established a glorious floral landscape, perfectly maintained throughout the decades.

Horticulturally inspiring, and filled with wonderful photographs and rich, detailed text, this book takes readers step-by-step through the basics of their own heirloom gardens, to the more advanced concepts such as designing a welcoming driveway or laying a shrubbery border for year-round bloom. Bursting with ideas for gaining abundant pleasure from your own garden, From a Victorian Garden reveals one of the truly magnificent gardens of the past—still very much alive today.

5 out of 5 stars Gold mine of information for designing a Victorian garden.......2007-07-02

This book is much more than a "how-to" book on Victorian gardening. It provides insight into Victorian daily family life. Anyone interested in Victorian life or gardening will find it fascinating. Anyone interested in restoring or creating a garden for a Victorian home should consider it essential reading. It has been extremely useful in planning a garden for our late 19th century house. As a lagniappe, the book's appendices provide a wealth of additional information on Victorian gardening and life. This is a great addition to gardening literature, especially since there is so little information available on designing a Victorian garden.

5 out of 5 stars Wow! Fabulous book.......2007-05-30

5 out of 5 stars Incredible Book for Old House Gardeners.......2004-07-16

If you own a Victorian home, or are simply interested in Victorian gardens, this book is an amazing resource. From period advice on everything from walkways, to drives, to historical shrubs, this is truly the first book EVER (at least that I have found) to advise the American homeowner on practical gardening matters for old houses. Easy to read, with great pictures, From a Victorian Garden is a must for anyone interested in period gardening! I loved it!

4 out of 5 stars from victorian to me.......2004-05-17

I read this book and was amazed at what I learned. It not only
told me about the way it used to be in the garden , but it also gave me so many ideas that I could use right now, in my own garden.
I would heartily recommend this book to anyone if you are interested in gardening or not.

5 out of 5 stars Especially recommended for gardening and landscaping enthusiasts.......2005-10-14

The British Victorians were masters of geometrically formal nineteenth century gardening characterized by bright, elegant, seasonal bedding to create lush, exuberant outdoor spaces where they met, played, and dined. These were verdant landscapes enhanced with carpet beds, topiary, statuary, sundials, marble and stone walkways, as well as classical architectural ruins, fountains, and pools. In "Victorian Gardens", garden historian and expert Caroline Holmes showcases many restorations and recreations of Victorian gardens ranging from the Osborne House on the Isle of Wight (Queen Victoria's country home), to Biddulph Grange in Staffordshire, and Down House in Kent (which was home to Charles Darwin). More than two hundred beautiful color photographs, in addition to illustrations, diagrams, and layouts of restorations, provide the reader with a visual and intellectual perspective on the Victorian approach to estate gardening, landscaping, and outdoor beautification. Informed and informative, a joy to simple browse through, "Victorian Gardens" is especially recommended for gardening and landscaping enthusiasts, and would be a popular addition to any community library's Gardening resource and reference collection.

                          Book Description

The varied tastes of the Victorians extended to their gardens and landscapes, and Victorian Gardens describes the wide range of garden designs and planting styles that were created during Victoria's reign. The Victorians' inventiveness and enthusiasm for technology and industrial developments transformed professional British gardening into a sophisticated and skilled profession. Public parks, carpet bedding, kitchen gardens and glasshouse displays are only a few of the era's innovative horticultural contributions that are still enjoyed today. Many of today's gardeners are rediscovering the vibrant planting schemes popular over a century ago and we can learn much from the detailed plant lists and gardening instructions that are recorded in Victorian books and magazines.

Picturesque tumbledown cottages, their gardens ablaze with roses, delphiniums, and hollyhocks, inspired a whole generation of Victorian artists. 130 inspired works by painters such as Helen Allingham, Claude Strachan, and David Woodlock, along with forty others, compose a fascinating and splendid historical record of the flowers and features that characterized the Victorian English country garden. "...a cornucopia of entrancing watercolors."--The Field. "As happy a book as you are likely to meet."--Arts Review.

This book made me turn to gardening and the art world. He is fantastic and I strongly ( emphasis on strongly)recommend buying his books including Victorian Cottages. The next month after I had read his book I retired and followed my love to gardening and art. Since then I have bought 5 Allingham's and many others. My gardens have transformed I was on Gardener's world.

                              5 out of 5 stars A Gorgeous fashion book.......2006-06-23

This is a gorgeous book: the costumes are photographed in full color with large reproductions. Cincinnati obviously has many wonderful pieces in its museum. There are 43 full color (or should I say colour, to go with the title) of costume. A few are details of a costume shown in another plate, otherwise the plates most often contain one, but sometimes 2 or 3 costumes. The pictures have brief captions with them, and more detailed information is included towards the end of the book. There are, in addition, more than 20 black and white historic illustrations.

This has a more substantial text than many similar works. The are separate chapters on "Acquiring a French Wardrobe", "The Fabric Scrapbooks of Hannah Ditzler Alspaugh, "Healthful, Artistic and Correct Dress". the bulk of the text is a review of fashion from 1837-1912. The text is happily divided into shorter time periods for a more detailed and meaningful discussion. This modern reader smiled at seeing the styles for 1866-1868 described as "severe", although of course, in context that makes sense. The divisions are not be a set scheme, but according to what the author deems best giving the flow of fashion.

There is much additional factual material: a list of abbreviations, a list of sources cited, notes, a glossary, a bibliography and a detailed index. Not only eye-candy, but a good research source.

I'm glad that I didn't wear, or worse, have to clean this kind of clothing, but as always for this period, the dresses are swooningly beautiful.

                                Book Description

This volume contains 123 documents which illustrate the early history of the American Presbyterian Congo Mission and its struggle for human rights in the Congo from 1890-1918. The documents, many of which have never previously been published, are crucial to a full understanding of both the work of the Presbyterian Mission and its impact on the social, political, and religious life of the Congo. The book is divided into four parts. Part One documents the founding and early history of the Presbyterian Mission from 1890 to 1898. Part Two documents the deterioration of social conditions in the Congo under King Leopold, and the reform campaigns initiated by the American Mission in Britain and the United States. Part Three consists of documents related to the 1909 libel trial of William M. Morrison and William H. Sheppard, the principal leaders of the American Mission. Part Four documents the Mission's reaction to continuing human rights abuses, particularly religious persecution, under Belgian rule to 1918. The documents are annotated and the volume contains an introduction and an index.

Breeding is a beautifully printed and bound collectors slip-cased edition of some of Rankin's finest black and white portraits.

Rankin is well known as a prolific fashion and advertising photographer as well as for high profile projects such as Celebritation and Nudes. In Breeding, one of Rankin's private projects, he shows his subtlety and depth.

Here the images are contemplative and questioning. The inherent androgyny of many of the models is exaggerated, passing simple comment on human sexuality and how it is represented.

Models include Kate Moss and Helena Christensen.

Although this catalog does not all of the best pieces from the exhibit (most notably absent are the yurts and archery equipment), it does have a good selection of maps ans supporting text for the items that are included. Broken down by time period rather than by object (which for the Nomads of Eurasia and Son of Heaven catalogs proved to be a more useful format) it is nonetheless valuable for its coverage of pieces that have not shown up in any other museum exhibit.

Thank you for such a wonderfully insightful, beautiful book! It has enhanced my knowledge tremendously of the time period, and is a wonderful addition to my library. I found it to be intelligently written, engaging to the reader, written with a great deal of passion and knowledge. I would recommend this book to anyone who has a love of the arts. Hopefully, the show this was based on might tour again in the future as I would love the opportunity to view these extraordinary pieces described in the book first hand. Thank you again.

4 out of 5 stars Stunning exhibition of little-known Asian art.......2000-03-30

Opens up an array of artworks known to few in the West (or the East, for that matter), since North-Asian tribal cultures have long been rather stigmatized. Lovingly photographed, with quite breathtaking color reproduction. Informative text. A truly exciting introduction to the arts and archaeological finds of the Asian steppes and "frontier" areas.
