          Book Description

One of the most accomplished American writers of the early 20th century, Edith Wharton achieved both critical recognition and popular acclaim. This Student Companion provides an introduction to Wharton's fiction. Beginning with her life and career, the volume places Wharton in the context of her times, focusing on how she was shaped by the culture of wealth and privilege into which she was born. Her struggle to resist the demands of her social world paralleled her characters' lives and contributed to the power of her writing. Included are an in-depth discussion of her writing, along with analyses of thematic concerns, character development, historical context, and plot. A close critical reading covers each of her major works, with a full chapter devoted to each: The House of Mirth (1905), Ethan Frome (1911), Summer (1917), The Age of Innocence (1920), and her two novellas, Madame de Treymes (1907) and The Old Maid (1924). Another chapter addresses Wharton's short stories and considers some of her most famous and anthologized tales, such as "The Other Two" and "Roman Fever." This companion is ideal for students who are reading Wharton for the first time, or for general readers who are seeking a greater understanding of her writing. A select bibliography offers suggestions for further reading about Wharton and includes criticism and contemporary reviews of her work.

Although the faculty photos and some of the text are a little corny, this is still a great book for anyone interested in contemporary jewelry. Although some of the artists are really only familiar to europeans, the works all reach a level of excellence.

                  Book Description

Female American Eels spend years traversing the 3,000 miles from the site of their Atlantic Ocean inception to the freshwaters of Kansas. Upon reaching the coast, they leave their male counterparts behind and make the last leg of the journey alone. Eventually swimming back, they rendezvous with the males, head out to sea, spawn, and die.

Although most fishes found in Kansas aren't as well traveled as the Eel--some probably never venture more than a few thousand feet in their lives--they each have their own characteristics that make them a unique and important influence on their environment.

Featuring full-color drawings and photographs for the first time, this revised guide describes and illustrates the 135 common and not-so-common, native and introduced fishes found in Kansas. It provides a wealth of information on appearance, size, habitat, reproduction, food, and unusual or interesting traits and behaviors. Standardized common and scientific names, black-and-white drawings for each species, identification keys, and maps showing species location by county are included.

Fishes in Kansas spotlights the petite and the stout, the brightly colored and the transparent, the toothed and the toothless, the survivor and the vanquished. The Least Dart, we find, is only 1-3/4 inches at its maximum length while the largest known Kansas flathead catfish measured in at 5-foot-3 and 90 pounds. The channel catfish is found in all large Kansas streams and many lakes and ponds while only four Pugnose Minnow have been recorded in the state, back in 1931. The Rudd females produce as many as 232,000 eggs in their lifetimes. The Neosho Madtom is classified as federally threatened.

This guide also helps clear up common misconceptions--The Walleye is commonly called "Walleyed Pike" but is really a perch while the Sunfish, commonly called a perch, isn't--and notes the affect of human activities on the population and distribution of fishes. Providing the most complete and up-to-date information available, Fishes in Kansas is essential for anyone interested in the state's aquatic environment.

This book contains 133 color photographs and drawings, and 175 black-and-white illustrations.

                      Book Description

This volume deals with Jewish and Christian apocalyptic texts and movements from the second century BCE through the fourth century CE. It focuses on two major themes, cosmology and eschatology; that is, views of structure of the universe including its religious function and interpretations of history and the future. The detailed historical and literary analysis of these themes are introduced by an essay on the cultural gap between the original contexts of these texts and those of readers today and how that gap may be bridged. The book deals with the interrelations between post-biblical Judaism and early Christianity. The relevant Jewish texts and history are discussed thoroughly in their own right. The Christian material is approached in a way which shows both its continuity with Jewish tradition and its distinctiveness.

                      3 out of 5 stars A good book for the web-novice photographer.......2005-05-02

I am not, by any stretch, a professional photographer; but I do enjoy snapping plenty of images as a hobbyist. Nor do I have experience at building a website; but may like to try my hand at making an amateur photography site with an Alaskan twist. So when I saw the book, "Photographers' Guide to Web Publishing," I was intrigued.

The book is written by Charles Saunders, a pro who specializes in medium format monochrome photography. This book is one of a series published by Photographers' Institute Press (PIP) in the UK (sold through Sterling Publishing); and the first I have encountered for the novice web author with an interest in photography. Ideally written for the self-employed professional who would like to bring their portfolio to the web.

At under 200 pages, the book is an easy read and does not get bogged down on the technical end, but rather gives the beginner the basics of good web design. In the first half, Saunders gets the reader thinking about the intended web audience and their surfing expertise as well as browser requirements and HTML standards. Also covered, are topics such as shopping for an ISP, web hosting service, and domain name.

The second half of the book lays down a framework for the beginner to actually write their first web page. Covering first HTML, then moving on to cascading style sheets, the use of JavaScript, management and organization of images and content on the site, and tips on enhancing the user's experience. It caps off with business promotion, protection and legal issues.

Photographers' Guide to Web Publishing is well illustrated in full color (except where the author uses his own B&W images), and offers plenty of room in the margins for notes. I found it to be well thought-out and organized. The example screen shots are, unfortunately, from the Window's side, but the text is, for the most part, non-platform specific. Saunders gives examples of how your web design choices may look different when viewed from a Mac verses Windows machine and advocates choices that compromise to look good from both platforms. Disappointingly; however, he makes no mention of Safari.

For the web-ignorant professional photographer, to the amateur shutter bug with an interest in taking a first 'swing' at building a web site, Photographers' Guide to Web Publishing is worth the $19.95 cover price.
