disappointing.......2004-02-03

This is the sort of regional gardening book that might have been marketed in 1965. The information is very basic, poorly explained, poorly illustrated, and dated. I doubt if the book was good for much when it was first published in the late 80's, but now with the revolution in Southern gardening carried on by the likes of J. C. Raulston, Tony Avent, William Welch and a host of others, the book seems stale and joyless.

Gardening in the South With Don Hastings : Trees, Shrubs and.......2001-09-04

I was very disappointed with this book. It carries almost no usable data, just vague language. It seems that Mr. Hastings used this book as a tax right off to travel to England and other countries for research. I do not care of the lush lawn of England, nor do I care of the beauty of an oasis in the Middle East. I especially do care to read phrases, as "there is no perfect grass for the South, just make do with what you have". I rated this book 2 stars due solely to the pictures. If you were looking for a book that offers real usable data, I'd recommend looking elsewhere.

The first book I turn to........1998-04-02

When I moved here several years ago I was new to the South and to gardening. My husband bought me this book and it has been my constant companion. It is the first book I turn to when I need a tree or shrub for an area, and Mr. Hastings is always the final determinant of whether the choice I made was a good one. I've landscaped two properties, and the book seems to grow with me as I need it.

Don Hastings is a true plantsman of the South. Every gardener in the region knows the Hastings name due to the huge mail-order seed business the family owned for generations. And of course, down South family name is everything! Hastings shares the wealth in his Gardening in the South series. I've read many gardening books. The difference here is that, first, it is written for my part of the country. Others are often written with a Northeast focus that just doesn't apply to our heat and humidity. Second, Hastings is not shy about expressing a definitive opinion. If your new house has a silver maple, "Prune it at the ground with a chainsaw," Don advises. There are other writers you can read twice and still not be sure if they're for it or agin it. Live down South? Got a yard? Better buy this book

This volume deals with the music of the Devotio moderna, an influential religious movement in Northern Europe during the late Middle Ages. As its point of departure it takes a unique source from the second half of the fifteenth century, manuscript 16 H 34 (olim B 113) from the University library of Utrecht, which was hitherto largely unknown.

Five studies deal with the codicological construction, the systems of notation, the function, liturgical and paraliturgical aspects and the polyphonic arrangements of the songs.

The multi-disciplinary approach of this research makes the volume a valuable source for anyone interested in the Devotio moderna movement, especially musicologists, codicologists and (church-)historians.

Excellent social history of American cities in 20th century........1998-07-16

"Main Street to Miracle Mile" is an excellent introduction to the development of American cities in this century. What's more, it takes what could be a dull topic and makes it lively by looking at such structures as gas stations, motels, and shopping centers and showing how the changes in the architecture of these businesses reflect the changes that were taking place in American society. Good photographs from many parts of America illustrate the impact a more mobile population has had on the location, size, and design of the buildings that serve us. While this book has been used as a text for college classes, it also can be very enjoyable for the casual reader.

Three Fabulous Famous Mystics!.......2005-10-04

An excellent read for anyone wanting a greater understanding of how the lives of these great men formed their outstanding works. Jacob Boehme in particular stands out as someone all mystics must know! His writings on the nature of sin, evil, and redemption and "the Fall" as a necessary stage in the evolution of the universe, was groundbreaking in his time and paved the way for more mystical traditions to follow. Excellent!

Although the title put me off at first normally these kind of books are great in their simple concise explanations so I ordered it anyway.

I have to say it's an excellent book, I normally teach adults yoga and am just branching out into teaching children. However I am finding that I can take information from this book to use in beginners adult classes too as its simple, down to earth, no nonsense explanations of yoga make it a lot easier for students (at whatever age) to understand.

An absolute must if you would like to teach yoga to children.

I thought this book was excellent--I'm using it with my four-year-old, who has learned all 5 yanas and is able to recite them. She loves doing the poses and it really changes her mood when she's grumpy. I only wish there were better pictures. Sometimes it is hard to follow the diirections with no pictures.

I even saw Krishna Das there putting kids into gleeful rapture at a kids' kirtan one afternoon. She is a special woman and a great author. This book is a gold mine of exercises and instruction. If you have a child, and you believe in yoga,you should get this book. Jodi's love for children and yoga comes through every page.

As an avowed chocoholic, I had to have this book also. It runs the gamut from dipping strawberries, making roses from chocolate paste and the best [in my opinion] on page 32, is a 3 tiered wedding cake with a marbled chocolate drape adorning all three tiers and secured at intervals with chocolate roses. There's also centerpieces, truffles, a list of suppliers, etc.
This is a must have for your library. The photos are incredible, everthing is clear!!!

Beautiful photos. Great Ideas. Lots of instructions. What's not to like? Well, there isn't a mention of portion size or number anywhere to be found. I figured out that the larger cakes serve 150 wedding portions by finding one that is made of 150 molds filled with chocolate mousse. If you don't really know how to work with cakes and their decorations this book is a bit advanced- I'm a pastry chef and had problems with the first one I tried. It was worth the effort- a tasty cake and wonderful to behold. I'm going to try another of the cakes in a few weeks-and now I know how much time it might really take. YOU MUST PLAN AHEAD when using this book-like a week in advance. Otherwise- go for it, you'll definitely learn a lot

This compact book is a gem. Like the title says, there are 1000 patterns inside for many different block sizes and shapes. There are designs for triangles, circles, polygons, stars, borders, repeat patterns, squares, fillers, and many ethnic patterns to name a few. There are lots of styles represented from traditional patterns to art deco, as well as pictures from nature. Each pattern is marked as suitable for hand or machine quilting, and suggested block shapes for single use of the design. There's an enlargement table in the back so you can fit the pattern to whatever size block you need. There are alot of fresh new ideas here that will last you for many years.

This book is a great resource text. The book has tons of useful info on quilting motifs to hand or machine quilt.The book does the math of enlarging any motif for you. Easy to read and to follow the symbols that accompany each design.

This book should earn Meyer Friedman an Nobel prize........1997-12-21

This book gives tremendous insight into the psycological causes and cures of excess stress in one's life. The depth of knowledge revealed requires multiple readings (would you believe studying) to fully absorb. Even after taking the one year long type A behavior reduction course given by the Meyer Friedman Institute I find previously un absorbed relevant information in this book during my on going re-readings. Meyer Friedman through this book has definitely helped me gain some control of my respopnse to stressful situations. Previous to my exposure to this book I did not know that I had elements of type A behavior. Now I understand how much type A behavior has affected my life, even though most people think that I am a very easy going person. The book explains how and why type A behavoir is self masking ( I have given copies of this book to two type A people I know and they both have not read it) and is so much broader in scope than the stereo typical image most people have of it. The cure and treatment section of the book is much more extensive and to the heart of the problem than the typical self help stress books that don't go much further than giving you a check list and telling you to "don't worry, be happy". The mental exercizes and drills detailed do redirect one's perspective which is listed as the real cause of type A response and the resulting stress induced in every body involved. My only aggravation with the type A behavior modification routine given in the book is that it takes too long.
