Customer Reviews:
Good, but take some bits with a grain of salt.......2006-09-08
I got this one recently, and in parts it's an excellent book. I would advise taking at least some of it with a grain of salt, though, as she does rather go on about the fictional Celtic Great Goddess and the equally fictional Tree Calendar a bit. She seems to take all sources as equally valid, citing authors like Robert Graves, Mary Daly, and Kaledon Naddair along side authorities like F. Marian MacNeill and Anne Ross and more technical documents like pollen studies.
This said, she seems to be an excellent source for Gaelic names of plants, medicinal traditions in the Highlands and Islands, and material regarding fiber arts and dyeing. She falls down a bit where she goes with Gravesian and NeoPagan sources for spiritual information. I feel that this is definitely worth the money, but one should take certain of her assertions with some caution.
The Scots Herbal ( The Plant Lore of Scotland).......2000-10-25
This is a delightful book which breaks into two sections. The first deals with the plants generally and there uses throughout history taking into account religious and political changes to both the nature of the land and attitudes to their usage. It is an extremely intelligent and insightful account based on a great deal of research and knowledge, and some wonderful humour imbedded in the text. The second part of the book tells the reader of the indigenous plants by common, Latin, Scots and Gaelic names. It looks at the use specific plants were put to. and although it does not tell you how to make a plant dye, or how to make a poultice, there are many books which do. This book is , in my experience as a Scot living in Scotland who has been interested in herbalism for over a decade a unique find.

Customer Reviews:
Learn about a people by learning about their food.......2006-03-17
This small book is truly a gem. I would not use it as a cookbook or a travel guide--there are other books that cover these bases well. However, this gives excellent cultural insight though one of our most intimate human experiences--the preparation and serving of food.
The author, a woman, is able to go inside a variety of Moroccan kitchens and see Moroccan women in a domain where they are truly in charge. She explains how a wife may use food to communicate feelings and to pass on family customs. She discusses how foods are used in specific Moslem observances. She gives details about the etiquite of eating in a Moroccan home and how to avoid social mis-steps.
There are no specific recommended restaraunts, but she discusses the specialties of different Moroccan regions and does recommend the open air seafood cafes of Essouria. There are some recommendations for vegetarians and an anecdote about how a vegatarian managed during a Moslem observance that involves eating lamb for a number of days. There is general information about food hygeine and water safety. For people who are watching their diet, there is some limited advice on how to manage in Morocco.
This book explains the various cooking pots and other implements used in various types of Moroccan kitchens. When we have visited other countries, such as Vietnam, we had to do a lot more reserch on our own to learn about the various cooking customs and implements used.
When I travel, I like to learn about the culture in advance. I also insist that my children do background reading too. Yes, the kids complain about the tons of mandatory reading and educational DVDs, but it enhances our experience. When children start asking informed questions, guides and residents open doors not available to most tourists. Interestingly enough, my children, aged 11 and 15 liked the book and read the whole thing. My husband and I also enjoyed it and read it from cover to cover.
If you are interested in visiting Morocco, you should suppliment this book with a more general travel guide such as the Lonely Planet Morocco or the Rough Guide to Morocco. If you want to do a lot of Moroccan cooking, you should get a Moroccan cookbook. However, if you want to understand the interaction of food and culture, this is the book for you.
This Book Has a Few Problems, But I Still Recommend It.......2002-02-03
I have lived in Marrakesh, Morocco for the past ten years, and eagerly picked up this book as soon as I saw it. Both the text and pictures in the book are REALLY lovely. If you are planning to travel in Morocco, it is a wonderful introduction to Moroccan cuisine.
However, don't try following the recipies given in this book, because some steps have been left out, and your result will not be correct. I found problems with several of the recipies. For example, the author tells you to make tagines (Moroccan stews) by putting meat or chicken in a pot with spices and water, and bringing ot a boil. While her lists of ingredients are correct, she has forgotten the all-important step of searing all sides of the meat in the pan BEFORE adding any water. If you don't do this, it will jsut taste like boiled meat. For correct and easy-to-follow recipies, adjusted to American kitchens, choose Paula Wolfert's book, "Good Food From Morocco."
The other small problem I found with this book is that some of the author's explanations for Moroccan behaviors are just plain not correct. For example, she states that most Moroccans never eat in restaurants because this would be an insult to the wife's or the mother's cooking. Having lived here for ten years, I can tell you the real reason is that most Moroccans just plain cannot afford even the cheapest restaurants. Upper-class and wealthy Moroccans DO eat in restaurants, nevertheless, often a couple of times a week.
Overall, however, I think the author has done an excellent job, and this would be a great book to either take with you on your trip to Morocco (it's pocket size), or to read in advance of your trip.

Customer Reviews:
Hardly what I would call painting..........2007-07-20
If you are looking for a good book based on a wide variety of techniques, this book is a handbook. If you are looking for a book that showcases wonderful artwork by competent artists, this is a good book. If you are a painter who wants to learn how to paint feathers or fur, this is not a good book.
The preliminary chapters of this book are all about drawing. Having studied, art, yes, we need to learn to draw before we can learn to paint. But the title of this book is _Keys to PAINTING Fur and Feathers_.
There follows different ideas on how to capture light on white fur, how to paint patterns, and other useful techniques, but I do feel they could have been explained better.
And then we get back to the issue of painting. Pen and ink drawing is drawing, not painting. Colored pencil is drawing, not painting. Pastels are, well, pastels, not painting.
For the artist that likes to experiment in different mediums, this is an excellent resource book. For those that are into acrylics and watercolors, you'll find some nice things in here. But I think the title is very misleading, because much of the book does not focus on actual 'painting'.
Wildlife Artist.......2007-05-13
This book is excellent for anyone who paints wildlife. It gives detailed illustrations of how to paint every type of fur and feathers in all mediums, can really recommend this book to any wildlife artist.
what a book.......2001-07-25
This book is full of beautiful and inspiring pictures painted in many mediums including oils, acrylics and watercolours. although this book is a beautiful book i only gave it 4 stars because it doesnt really spend alot of time focusing on how to actually achieve the effects that the various pictures in the book portray.
Pastelists Take Heed.......2000-09-14
Quick summary of the book topics: Chapter 1) how to draw some animals in pencil and charcoal Chapter 2) painting fur textures Chapter 3) painting feather textures Chapter 4) detail area focusing on such things as how a bird flies, how they grip a branch, tail fur and feathers, eyes, etc. Chapter 5) Painting Demonstrations
Although this book is advertised as "In All Mediums" and specifically mentions pastel in the jacket text by the editors, this is very misleading. If you are an acrylic, watercolor or colored pencil painter, this book is right up your alley. If you are a pastelist, think twice before you buy.
The book contains a some wonderful paintings, usually unrelated to the text, and several of them are in pastel. However, the *only* place they even talk or even *use* pastel is in the "Painting Demonstrations" chapter. The demonstration is called "How to Paint a Raccon in Pastel". The raccoon is 3/4 posed and half in his den -- you can only see the raccoon's head and part of his side!
Overall, it's a great book for acrylic, watercolor and colored pencil, and it can be used by painters in other mediums. However, if you are a pastelist and looking for a book that would either cover pastel thoroughly, or at least fairly (when compared to the time spent on the other mediums), forget it. Don't expect to find any pastel-oriented help here -- there isn't any worth speaking of.

William Curtis's venerable Botanical Magazine, founded in 1787, is one of the oldest regular publications with color illustrations still in existence. In The Illustrated Rhododendron, Pat Halliday lays out the complicated classification of the genus according to the system approved by the Royal Botanic Garden, Edinburgh, taking as her inspiration the finely detailed drawings that appeared in the Botanical Magazine over the last two centuries. Though of course not all of the 850 or so species native to the Northern Hemisphere are pictured or discussed, every subgenus, section, and series is represented, the species chosen for inclusion based on the quality and condition of the illustration available, the importance of the species historically, the popularity of the species, and Halliday's personal interest in it. "This is primarily a book of 'pretty pictures,'" Halliday writes, but that is a modest appraisal. Halliday's accounts of the selected species' discovery and cultivation, as well as her meticulous descriptions of the plants, range, and habitats, will captivate rhododendron enthusiasts. And on the contrary, the illustrations were given short shrift in the book's production--the paper is simply too transparent to support dense text on one side and a delicate illustration on the other. Ultimately, this is a book on the classification of the Rhododendron genus, with some very pretty pictures thrown in. --Liana Fredley
Book Description
This book presents 121 plates, all of the subgenera, sections, and series as classified by the Royal Botanic Garden, Edinburgh. The text provides an interesting account of the introduction of the illustrated species into cultivation, its history, distribution, habitat, relationships with other species, and its classification.
Customer Reviews:
Informative, thorough, experienced, and professional.......2001-10-14
With its 120 color illustrations and four line drawings, Pat Halliday (on the staff of the Herbarium at the Royal Botanic Garden, Kew, from 1947 to 1990 and an experienced rhododendron expert horticulturalist) offers a superbly organized and presented contribution to the literature of rhododendrons. A veritable showcase of botanical art, each of the exquisite color engravings are drawn from the pages of "Curtis's Botanical Magazine" or "Kew Magazine". The species is presented within the conceptual framework of Halliday's own personal choice of classification systems and she updates the information that accompanied the original historical plates throughout the Botanical Magazine's 213 years of publication. A personal selection rather than an encyclopedic volume, Halliday's descriptions comprising The Illustrated Rhododendron are nonetheless informative, thorough, experienced, and professional. Highly recommended, essential reading for gardeners and horticulturalists with an interest in the species, Pat Halliday's informative overview of the cultivation requirements for the rhododendron is especially recommended.

Book Description
This volume contains the five papers read at a Symposium held in Leiden on 10 December 1991, on the occasion of the centenary of Abraham Kuenen's death, together with four other articles. The introductory article gives a short biography of Kuenen, one article deals with his method, two concern his approach to the religion of ancient Israel, and the other six discuss the reception of his work on the Pentateuch and later developments in various countries. Together these articles highlight the significance of this great Old Testament scholar, and at the same time identify issues which continue to confront Old Testament research. Though the wide variety of new approaches to the Old Testament has contributed greatly to our understanding of it, it is clear that historical research has not been rendered obsolete or superfluous by it.

Its a Small World.......2000-04-09
The work that Ms. Breger present in her electrifying and illuminating book spans that twilight zone between photography made with purely aesthetic vision and imagery made for the purposes of scientific investigation. For my part, if a type of imagery carries a wonderful vision and powerful presence no matter what precincts it hales from, it warrants serious and critical attention.
The photographs in this book come from a visual realm that roughly parallels Egerton, Nilsson, et al. It is work made with a Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM).
Whether or not you are familiar with this imaging technology -- its processes and procedures are not all that recondite, is not overly material as they are really not actually at issue.. The rendering though, is. The end product if done in the hands of an expert, as Dee Breger has wide renown for being, is in a rich, etched -- in effect, and extremely beguiling continuous-tone sharply scaled monotone.
The photographs focus mainly on exo-skeletal microorganisms and organic and inorganic microstructures. That's what you look at when you view one of these sorts of images -- and they are very arresting and strangely alluring ones indeed. The identifiability of subject matter is not in itself, I feel, the source of their quite haunting power. And, it is indeed arguable as to how critical the related data is, interesting as many , including myself, would find it.
The subject matter goes beyond naming and claiming. It is about the enigmatic nature of the fundamental, and the inchoate, the substrates of experience. Platonisn (Neo- & Oldo-), in one form or another, is the operant mode in this sort of representation. The subsuming issues are epistemological in addition to the esthetic and experiential.
Photographically, Dee's antecedents, on one hand, might be Blossfeld and Regner-Patzch -- the Platonisn thing. And, other the other hand, Weston and Strand (The thing itself -- the world being intrinsically more interesting that what anyone can say about it...). Strong resonances too with the archetypal inventories of the Bechers and the mysterious little chthonic worlds of Chiarenza.
That's more than enough for the high falutin' stuff. I guess the brass tacks of the matter is that these images are point blankly speaking, striking They bear a drama, mystery and presence that definitely command the attention of both a general inquisitive audience and those critically interested in photography, how ever unusual or unexpected its manifestation.

Book Description
This book is a study of the intellectual and literary factors that in the mid-Qing dynasty contributed to the development of vernacular fiction of unprecedented scholarly and satirical sophistication. The author examines three works of vernacular fiction—Rulin waishi (ca. 1750), Yesou puyan (ca. 1780), and Jinghua yuan (1821/1828)—for their articulation of new perceptions of the literati, or Confucian scholar-gentry. He places the reevaluation of literati roles and privilege found in these novels within the context of scholarly and cultural developments, notably the ascendance of the philological or evidential studies movement of the Qianlong and Jiaqing periods (1736-1820).
The author cites a broad range of contemporary discursive writings to corroborate evidence of a clearly discernible trend to modify or negate the ethical and epistemological certainties that had long served as the ideological basis of literati social eminence. These writings implicitly redefined the tasks and interests by which the literati constructed their self-identity. The widespread predilection of these various discourses toward intellectualizing literati identity is in turn brought to bear on the three texts of vernacular fiction. By reading vernacular fiction, scholarly and exegetical texts, and aesthetic treatises as parallel if not wholly identical aims to redefine literati identity, the book attempts to advance our understanding of the intersections and overlaps between literary and discursive practices of late traditional China.
Customer Reviews:
Great Book!!!.......1999-01-11
This book was simply one of the nicest books I have read recently. Unfortunately, the text is only about one third of the original Chinese book, but it is enough to motivate me to actually study harder to learn Chinese more quickly so I will be able to read the other two thirds in the original. This book is both funny and informative, and it contains a lot of criticism of the times Li Ruzhen lived in. More so, it is great fun to read and think about, the author (and the translator) use the funniest language to describe the many countries the Hero and Heroine(s) travel to. I had to laugh out more than a few times while reading "Flowers in the Mirror", though it is also a fantastic description of the view the author held of his world, the China of the 18th/19th century - a MUST READ. Thanks to my Prof. for making us read it :)
