Hoping to Visit Brittany & Normandy.......2006-08-18

This is a detailed and helpful guide book which appears to cover almost all of the questions a visitor to Brittany & Normandy might ask before and after arrival. The Contents page shows the variety of subjects covered. Among the many sections, there are recommendations on preparing for unexpected health problems; there is a brief language/phrase section and a glossary for quick French/English or English/French one word references on a travelor's most commonly needed words/translations. For each area reviewed, there are brief commentaries about history, points of interest and transport. In the Directory section there are suggestions and telephone numbers and references for finding rentals, camp sites, hotels, restaurants, culture, shopping, and regional attributes and regional agriculture. There are contact numbers or addresses for variously priced lodgings and overnight accommodations as well as other services. Much information, including small maps, is squeezed into this 368 page book to read and savor ahead of the trip, as well as for every day reference while touring. This little book could be the only Brittany & Normandy guide book needed, tucked into your carry-on...and kept in pocket for use from landing until departure.

An excellent guide and a must buy.......2005-06-29

I hesitated to buy this book to plan a recent tritp to Normandy -- with a high-speed connection to the Internet, doing research with travel books seemed so pointless and expensive. Besides, buying the book seemed to open Pandora's Box -- we're doing quite a bit of traveling nowadays, and if we bought this book, shouldn't we buy a book for every country we're visiting in the coming months? This could easily rack up expenses for frugral travelers.

It turned out to be a great decision to spend the dozen or so dollars on this book. Jam-packed with helpful information and wonderful maps (besides the ones in the DK travel guides, Lonely Planet offers better maps than any guide book I've tried to use), I referred to this book over and over again during both planning and travel.

The information in it is occasionally outdated, but no book is ever completely up to date. For example, prices have gone up and hours have changed. Not a problem though, because the book offers phone numbers and websites to check the info. We used it to find campsites and places to visit. It pointed us to things that we would otherwise never have known existed -- e.g. the Pont du Normandie and the Route des Traditions. And it steered us clear of some cities so that we could spend more time on what we were interested in.

The book also includes sections on the history of the area and information about local foods and customs. It's just chock full of everything you'll need to plan your trip -- info about tolls and transportation, French phrases, etc. Definitely pick this one up!

A Business-like Guide.......2004-08-18

This one does exactly what it says on the packet. Accurate, up-to-date (it's a year newer than its competitors) and easy-to-use. A bit low on illustrations and pictures, so not got the coffee-table factor, but that's not what it's for. Very good on camp site info.

Max Benirschke was a graphic artist working in "Jugendstil" -- the Austrian-German equivalent of the Art Nouveau movement. This book is a republication of "Buchschmuck und Flachenmuster von Max Benirschke" ("Book Decoration and Flat Design by Max Benirschke") and was originally published by Verlag Martin Gerlach, Vienna and Leipzig (ca. 1902). It contains 146 of his designs on 32 pages and includes everything from small ornaments to frames, borders, decorative initials, magazine frontpieces and book covers done in an assortment of realistic and stylized drawings of flowers, vegetables, birds and people (mostly gargoyles and beautiful women) as well as general geometric shapes. There are even some examples of "tessellation" -- the geometric arrangement of repeating patterns made famous by M.C. Escher.

This is a excellent visual sourcebook for artists and craftspeople plus there is also a brief biography at the end of the book that describes the types of work Benirschke did and those artists and styles that influenced him. The designs would adapt well to graphic arts use (magazine and book covers, newsletters, menus, calling cards, wrapping paper, stationery, rubber stamps, greeting cards and posters) as well as to fabric arts (fabric design, batik and embroidery) and fine arts (painting and woodblock designs).

All of the pictures are done in two colors on white in one of four color combinations: burgundy/dark orange; hunter green/light orange; hunter green/purple; and brown/dark olive-mustard green. Although intended as a source for teaching and for inspiration, you could also laminate these pictures and use them to make pins, bookmarks or ornaments (note however, that the designs are printed on both sides of the page).

Should you buy it? Well, it's an interesting book and worth getting if you want to learn about Max Benirschke in particular or Art Nouveau in general or if you're looking for an alternative to the ubiquitous Mucha. There are a number of beautiful designs here that I have seen in other places but had no idea who had drawn them so it was nice to finally put the images with the artist.

This book offers many tips for training your dogs. The authors do not believe that you need to cause your dog pain to teach him to behave; in fact, cruel training methods can cause as many problems as they solve. The tips on introducing a new dog to your current pet are invaluable.

Excellent.......2001-05-10

This is a wonderful book which has already helped work wonders in the life of my 12 year old spaniel Barry. Don't look for quick fixes - Barry is still in denial about his drinking problem (he slops his ears in the water bowl and drinks from the toilet) but is working through other issues, some of which stem from puppyhood (here I must take the blame - I used to dress him up in a little Elizabethan doublet, hose and ruff for crying out loud). But thanks to this well-written and compassionate book I think the little guy might just pull through.

I have read DOGS ON THE COUCH and am amazed at how dogs copy humanistic traits. Dogs show and give love without condition. Dr. Lachman, a man who has studied, experienced, and found a psychological approach to human concerns through cancer clinics and helping out people who need therapy in getting through tough times, has expertly crossed over, and crossed back, to families who need emotional support from others and in understanding animal behavior,giving love and finding out how wonderful it is to be loved through people and of course,, your family pet. I look foward to more books by Dr. Lachman regarding family animals and how we humans can learn from them and ultimately learn from ourselves

Excellent Book on Dog Training and the Psychology behind it!.......1999-07-27

This book is an excellent treatise on the subject matter. The title clearly summarizes the book. "Dogs on Couch" signifies the treatment of dogs as part of the family by sharing a seat on the couch a well as a parallel to a human psychological session "on the couch". The book shows many techniques for handling routine training of the new puppy as well as the adult dog. Lachman also superbly handles many problem issues. I consider myself fortunate to have had the opportunity to witness certain of these techniques demonstrated by Larry Lachman. I also found the bereavement section quite informative since I amost lost my dog last year to coronary heart disease.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who has a dog, anyone who is contemplating getting a dog as well as anyone who would like to better understand other people's dogs.

Through interviews and reminiscences, Sandler catches a double feature at the Valencia; visits Howard Street's Arabian Tent Club to listen to Cab Calloway; attends the funeral of Chick Webb -- "the greatest jazz drummer in the world" -- along with such jazz luminaries as Duke Ellington, Gene Krupa, and Ella Fitzgerald; listens in on Arthur Godfrey's audition in the studios of WFBR; eats knockwurst at Schellhase's, steamed crabs at Bankert's, and Cantonese cuisine at Jimmy Wu's; takes the Chesapeake Restaurant up on its offer to "Eat our steak with a fork, else tear up your check and walk out"; and rides the Charles Street double-decker bus with Ms. Reuben Ross Holloway, who fought to make "The Star-Spangled Banner" our national anthem. Small Town Baltimore shows us how far Baltimore has come and what's been lost in the process.

My husband and I both grew up in the 40's and early 50's in Baltimore City. He in Irvington and I in Walbrook. We both found this book entertaining and informative. And we had fun reminiscing! If you want to get re-acquainted with your hometown, I would highly recommend this book.

One of the best books I ever read!.......2006-07-26

This was a terrific book. First you have to wade through the dull aspects at the beginning on equipment which was helpful in its day, but once you get through that, it is really a gripping story. I could barely put the book down, I hated leaving Shackleton and his party stuck in a blizzard while I stopped to get a cup of tea. You will really enjoy this book, it is very well worth it!

A superior edition of Shackleton's first book.......2000-02-15

This is a very nice, somewhat abridged edition of "Heart of the Antarctic." Compared with the Carroll & Graf trade edition, this does have some bits edited from the expedition preparations and the account of the Furthest South journey, but, unlike the Carroll & Graf edition, it has Professor David's account of the march to the South Magnetic Pole and an account of the Northern Party journey and so is overall a better text. The selection of pictures is decent, although there is one photo that I suspect is from the 1912 Scott expedition (of a tracked motor-sledge; the Shackleton expedition had only a car with it). The story of the British Antarctic Expedition is just as exciting as the doomed Endurance voyage, and I would highly recommend this edition to everyone interested in Shackleton and his adventures.

In 1941 Simone Weil was introduced to Father Jean-Marie Perrin, a priest of the Dominican order whose friendship became one of the most significant influences on her spiritual development. It was for Father Perrin that she wrote her 'spiritual autobiography', contained in Waiting for God, and to him that she later wrote 'Letter to a Priest'. When Weil requested work as a field hand, Perrin sent her to Gustave Thibon, a farmer and Christian philosopher. From 1941-2, Weil stayed with the Thibon family, working in the fields by day while writing by night the notebooks which posthumously became Gravity and Grace and other seminal works.
Perrin and Thibon met Weil at a time when her interior life and her creative genius were at the height of their glowing maturity. During the short but deep period of their acquaintance with her, they came to know her as she actually was. Their accounts of this time reveal her to us in the bare parlour of the Dominican convent at Marseilles where, after waiting her turn among a stream of refugees, she discussed her personal problems with Father Perrin. They show her to us in the vineyards of Ardèche, and on the stone seat by the fountain overlooking the Rhone valley where she read Plato to Thibon, her host. First published in 1953, and now newly introduced by Patricia Little, this unique portrait depicts Weil through the eyes of her friends, not as a strange and unaccountable genius but as an ardent and very human young person in search of truth and knowledge.

There wasn't anything that I thought was revolutionary here, but since I tend to get really stressed when my son doesn't eat (especially since he's pretty slim) this book helped and continues to help me relax some about it. I understand that my pushing food on him is a bad tactic in the long run. So, I'm glad I have it. Two unique things: a focus on our own "food legacy" that for some may ring true but for me was just not really an issue (I didn't have overly involved parents pushing or preventing my food habits) and two-a stronger focus on OVEReaters (reasonable in this era of obesity but far from my area of concern).

It may give you some peace of mind.

I have been a Smoking Cessation facilitator for 15 years. I have led classes for several hospitals. Much of the most effective teaching I share comes from Dr. Ferguson's book. Excellent reference for facilitators or participants. I recommend it in my classes.

Finally (via Zyban) I have been successful - this book was the most useful and helpful of all

this book is dated now. it would be nice if there was an updated version with the advent of patches now in use.
i found some of the statistics very illuminating and provided me with a strategy on quitting smoking which i am attempting to implement. for instance only half of all people who stopped smoking did so cold turkey. the other half had a well thought out plan of gradual cessation. which makes sense to me. we did not become smokers overnight so it's logical that we don't become non-smokers overnight.
there is a useful appendix on the brands of cigarettes and their tar and nicotine level to guide you to weaning you off nicotine if you prefer to attempt to quit that way.
at the price this book sells for it is a good value in my opinion
